Ferrari pulled the old switcheroo shortly before this year's GenevaMotor Show. What it had originally been referring to as the Ferrari620 GT did, indeed, make an appearance on the floor of Geneva'sPALExpo Convention Center, but the production car, it turns out,will be wearing the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta badge.

Despite that last-minute name change you'd behard-pressed to find anyone unhappy withFerrari's announcement considering the Italianmaker kept its word when it comes to what mat-ters: The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta will be thefastest and most powerful car ever to wear theprancing horse logo. Better yet, if initial reviewsreflect what buyers have to say, it just may bethe sexiest Ferrari ever.

As with any supercar, form has to follow func-tion, but the replacement for the outgoingFerrari 599 is decidedly more curvaceous thanthe function-over-form McLaren MP4-12C, while not quite goingas far over the top as theLamborghiniAventador.

Nonetheless, the F12's luscious Italian curves aren't there just forlooks. Most of the distinctive styling details have very practicalapplication. That includes the new Ferrari F12's Aero Bridge, anew concept that generates additional downforce by funneling airflowing over the hood to its flank. Then there's the Active Brake

Cooling system, which uses active vanes to guideair, when needed, through ducts to improve brakeperformance.

Weight was at the top of the list when Ferrari engi-neers set out to design the new F12 Berlinetta. Themaker has able to drive down mass by about 360pounds compared to the old 599, the new supercarcoming in at 3363 pounds. One trick was to slightlyshorten the new model: overall length down by 2inches. Another was more extensive use of light-weight materials including a new, aluminum-inten-sive spaceframe.

Better yet, the overall mass is closer to the ground. It sits 2.5 inch-es lower. By repositioning the engine and other key components

dling, as well as performance.

The F12 engine is a naturally aspirated 6.3-literV12 making 740 horsepower and 509 pound-feetof torque, with power routed through a 7-speeddouble-clutch gearbox. Compare that to 611 hp forthe old Ferrari 599.

Ferrari claims the new V12 will launch the F12from 0 to 100 kmh (62.5 mph) in just 3.1 seconds,which should translate to a 0-60 time of 3.0 sec-onds, maybe just slightly under. But 60 is justwarming up, with the F12 rated for a top speed of212 mph.

Perhaps the most telling statistic comes from pre-liminary testing on the grueling Fiorano race track,where the F12 reportedly cut something on theorder of 2 seconds off the laptime record for a pro-duction car, at 1:23.

There are a number of performance-enhancing fea-tures, including Ferrari's E-Diff, F-1 Trac and mag-netorheological damping system. Also standard:carbon ceramic brakes.

The interior has also gone through a significantupgrade. All infotainment-related displays are rout-ed through the new Human Machine Interface clus-ter that first appeared on the Ferrari FF.

Ferrari plans to launch the new F12 Berlinetta inAmerican late in 2012. Precisely how much cashwill you need in hand? Ferrari isn't saying yet, butexpect it to carry at least a moderate premium overthe current $312,993 for the outgoing 599.

Overview

The Lexus LX 570 has a new look for 2013, thanks mainly to the new spindle grillethat has become the Lexus corporate hallmark. Other styling refinements, inside andout, distinguish the latest edition. The 2013 Lexus LX 570 also gets updated electron-ics, both for tackling tough terrain and in terms of information and entertainment fea-tures. New conveniences have been added to the 2013 LX 570, such as a steeringwheel and driver seat that automatically retract for more graceful entries and exits.

The Lexus LX 570 is a true luxury vehicle, with advanced safety, comfort and qualityfeatures. It's also a big, heavy vehicle that can tow big loads, haul heavy cargo, andtransport people and gear across great distances in comfort. It uses the same heavy-duty frame and stout powertrain as the Toyota Land Cruiser. Like the Land Cruiser, theLexus LX 570 is designed for extraordinary versatility and an unusual combination ofutility and luxury. But with the Lexus, luxury comes first.

Designed for a different kind of use, the Lexus LX offers a number of qualities andfeatures that the Land Cruiser does not offer. These include technological advancessuch as wide-view parking monitors, adaptive front headlights, and an active dampingsuspension control system. A Mark Levinson audio system is also a Lexus exclusive,and the interior is built using a higher level of materials and finish.

The Land Cruiser is better equipped for rigorous off-road use; the LX 570, althoughalso highly capable, is aimed more at the luxury car owner who occasionally needsguaranteed control on a snowy road leading to a ski resort, or safe traction on the grad-ed dirt road leading to a ranch house or mountain fishing lodge. Either one of them willgo just about anywhere. Safety features are on a par with the best luxury sedans. Theability to haul boats or horse trailers up to 7,000 pounds makes the LX 570 the mostcapable SUV offered by Lexus; while the Land Cruiser can tow up to 8,500 pounds.The Lexus LX is relaxing to drive on long trips, gliding down the open highway witheasy, but it's also equipped with a brace of thoughtful features to make around-towndriving and parking more convenient.The Lexus LX competes with the Cadillac Escalade, Land Rover Range Rover, andMercedes-Benz GL-Class. The Range Rover and GL-Class are all-new for 2013. TheLexus LX was last redesigned for the 2008 model year.

Interior Features

The cabin of the Lexus LX reflects Japanese ideas of simplicity, strictattention to detail, and functionality as a form of luxury. That said, somenew colors and surfaces keep the design fresh for 2013. Electronic con-veniences have been enhanced as well.There are two standard leather colors to choose from: Black orParchment Both come with mahogany wood trim. The difference inatmosphere is dramatic: The Black suggests a dark, cozy, intimate den;the Parchment a bright and cheery sunroom. Either way, the detail workon the leather, trim panels and dash area is in keeping with Lexus stan-dards. Stitching on the seats is conspicuously uniform and stands up tofocused inspection. The Luxury Package upgrades to semi-anilineleather, which is a dye process that has the benefit of more consistentcolor characteristics, and extends the mahogany trim to the inside doorswitch plates.There's more brightwork on the dash than before, but it's now darker intone and it's still used judiciously. Instrument graphics are subtly revisedand look sharper and more focused than before.Features and controls consistent with high-end luxury sedans are builtinto the cockpit area, which is designed with a minimum of clutter. Thisis partly accomplished by mounting the phone, navigation, and audiocontrols on the steering wheel, as well as controls for the informationdisplay that selects trip information.

Who would have thought that a love for Volkswagens would spanacross 3 generations. I certainly did not. With good old dad anda brother being automotive service/body technicians and workingon all makes and models, from Ford Mustangs to ChevroletCorvettes and everything in between, my brother and two sons arevery proud owners of the german-madeVolkswagens.

It all began with my brother,Scott, saving his paperroute money for thepurchase of his1 9 6 9VolkswagenBeetle whenhe was 14years oldeven thoughhe could notdrive it untilhe was 16.That was ourfamily's "pet"project with every-one pitching it. Theentire "Bug" was restoredincluding rebuilt engine, bodywork, new paint job, reupholsteredinterior, etc. spanning the 2 years until hegot his license.

This was in the early 1980s. My brother never let anybody drivethe "Bug" but except for me and thatwas my first experience driving a"stick" shift. Everybody laughedabout the engine being in the trunk. Ieven remember playing "PunchBuggy" when traveling with my par-ents. When the 1990s rolled around,the "Farfegnugen" commercials startedappearing and that was a favoriteexpression in our household.

My brother's love for his Volkswagenmade gift giving a breeze. Anythingwould do from key chains, signs,Matchbox/Hot Wheels, T-shirts, etc.,as long as it had the "VW" logo on it.One year, I even cross-stitched thelogo and framed it for his wall. He

lives in Florida now and is again contemplating another overhaulmodifying its look and performance.

With my brother now living 1400 miles away, the question is,where did my two sons get the Volkswagen itch? Some people say

it must be in their blood.

My oldest son started out with aNissan Maxima, then an

Oldsmobile Cutlass, aVolkswagen golf, a

Honda S2000, andthen finally back to

a 2002Vo l k s w a g e nJetta. He toogot the longingto start tinker-ing spendingthousands of

dollars on highperformance mod-

ifications to theengine, body, and

interior.

His Volkswagen is his pride andjoy in addition to his 3-year-old daugh-

ter, my granddaughter, who also by the waycannot drive by a Volkswagen without spotting the VW logo.She's already saying that is what she wants to drive, just likedaddy. Now that the Jetta is complete, he plans on buying an older

model VW and restoring that as well, prob-ably for Harlow when she gets her license.

Now to my youngest son, who just turned18, I think it is more of a "monkey see,monkey do," but he too has a love forVolkswagens. He has had 3 Volkswagenssince before he got his license.

His first was a Jetta of which 2 cars werebeing combined into 1, but with lack ofgarage space and experience that projectwas abandoned. He then got a 1997Volkswagen GTI which after he and hisbrother had done a substantial amount ofwork on ended up being scrapped as thefloorboards were completely rotted.

Their next venture was that of a 1991Golf GL which was almost entirelyrestored except for a paint job and newrims/tires. The week before it was sched-uled to be painted, the car was totalled byan oncoming vehicle and all their hardwork ruined. That did not shatter hisVolkswagen dreams though; he was ableto procure a 1988 Volkswagen Golf orig-inally fromCalifornia inmint condi-tion. Eventhough thisVolkswagenis in suchgood shape, he still has plans for upgrad-ing its performance and signifying itslook, just like his uncle, and brother. Hethinks nothing of becoming a "greasemonkey" working on the engine by him-self.

Not afraid to get my hands dirty, I haveeven joined in helping out with enginerepairs/upgrades, painting, sewing interi-or necessities such as shift covers,reupholstering seats, etc. I have been the

second or third pair of hands since Iwas about 8 years old. Everyone hastheir own passion and if it can be afamily enterprise including everyonefrom dads, uncles, moms, kids andgrandkids, it makes it even more spe-cial.

My two sons, Matt and Josh, furtherenjoy their love for Volkswagensonline in their free time visiting thewebsites of VW Vortex, Southcoast-

VW.org, andn u m e r o u sforums onF a c e b o o k .They attendlocal swapmeets and reg-

ular Volkswagen shows such as DustOff, Dubs in the Sand, Waterfest, H20International, Field Werks, and BrokeDown.

The instrument panel is built around two largebrightly lit dial gauges, speedometer andtachometer. Between the two are four smallerdials for fuel, coolant temperature, voltage, andoil pressure. At the top of the center stack a newThin Film Transistor (TFT) color multi-informa-tion display that indicates steering wheel angle,digital speed, turn-by-turn navigation, and Multi-Terrain mode; in addition to the outside tempera-ture, current mpg, mpg since refueling, cruiserange, miles driven since start, and tire pressureinformation that has been available on previousmodels. The display also shows height settingand warning messages as they apply. Again, visu-al simplicity is achieved, remarkably so, givenhow much information the instruments convey.The front seats are roomy, supportive and widelyadjustable. The driver's seat adjusts 10 ways, andthe passenger seat 8 ways, including lumbar sup-port. The standard Easy Access system auto-matically retracts the steering wheel and dri-ver's seat when the ignition is turned off tomake the driver's ingress and egress easier.Optional in-seat ventilation has beenimproved.The center console lids function as armrests,and can be extended to work with differentdriving positions. Taller drivers will appreci-ate that front leg room is a priority. There isalmost 43 inches of legroom at the front, withgenerous shoulder and hip room. Even withthe moonroof, headroom exceeds 38 inchesfor the first two rows. One test driver in ourgroup, who is six feet, eight inches tall, askedfor just a tad more head room. For driversany shorter than that, we'll wager there is amplespace.Smart Access keyless entry unlocks all 5 doorswhen the driver touches a door or tailgate. Solong as the key fob is somewhere on your per-son, Bluetooth proximity sensors unlock the carautomatically. The optional Smart Card (includedin the Luxury Package) is literally a wallet cardthat does essentially the same thing as the SmartAccess key fob, allowing you to unlock and startthe vehicle as long as you have it with you.Built into the interior are 10 airbags as standardequipment. Front-seat occupants are protected bytwo-stage main airbags, two side airbags, andtwo knee airbags. A roll-sensing curtain airbag isdesigned to protect all three rows, and the sec-ond-row passengers also have separate seat-mounted side airbags. Standard child seat latchesare incorporated in the second row. All eightseats throughout the cabin have three-point seat-belt systems. Another Lexus safety system, activeheadrests, is standard on the front seats. In theevent of a rear-end collision, the headrests auto-matically tilt forward to limit the chance ofwhiplash injuries.Like a lot of large SUVs, entry into the cabindoes require a big first step. We tended to use thesturdy grab handles to swing up and into thefront. Third-row entry is made easier by use of atouch-and-tumble seat on the right side. It's still a

bit of a crawl for adults to move into the back,but the rear seating area is surprisingly accom-modating, at least for two adults. There are seat-belts and headrests for three, but in real life, thethird row will seat three adults best if the middlepassenger likes to cuddle.Two- and three-zone climate control systems arecommon in large cars and SUVs these days, butthe Lexus LX has separate climate controls forfour zones, so people in the first and second rowscan dial in their own air flow volume and tem-perature. To further increase precision in interiormicroclimates, there are a total of 28 vents dis-tributing air flow. The blower has seven levels,and a micro dust and pollen filter conditions theincoming air.The tri-lingual navigation system first appearedin 2008; we mention this bit of ancient historyonly to emphasize how much sophistication andmany additional features it has acquired sincethen. The latest HDD system incorporatesBluetooth, Lexus Enform with Safety Connect,

Lexus Insider, music streaming, and of course theusual XM NavTraffic, NavWeather, Stocks andSports. New for 2013 are automatic phonebookdownload capability, XM Fuel Prices, and LexusEnform Application Suite.XM Traffic Radio, which selects the least crowd-ed route to a destination, is included in the stan-dard audio system. The Mark Levinson optionprovides an upgrade equal to any automotiveaudio we know of; Mark Levinson systems areamong the cleanest sounding available. A harddrive disc offers 30 gigabytes for music storage,playable through 19 speakers that, combined,generate true surround sound. The system iscompelling and memorable. Anyone with doubtsabout potential for sound quality in an SUVshould bring their favorite DVD, get in the LX,and turn it up.

Driving Impressions

On the move, the Lexus LX 570 is smooth, quietand untroubled. The higher seating position per-mits long-range forward visibility, keeping occu-pants and passengers above the flow of ordinarytraffic, and eye-ball-to-eyeball with full-sizetrucks. The commanding view, combined withthe lack of noise and vibration, combine to createthe sensation of a protected cabin, and a sense of

well being.

The LX moves out readily at part throttle, creat-ing the sensation of power in reserve. The engineis an advanced 5.7-liter V8 shared with theTundra pickup truck and Land Cruiser SUV. It'sbuilt for torque, and it produces a lot of it, 403pound-feet, early in the rev range. More than 90percent of the torque is available before 2200rpm, so most of the time the engine is loafingalong with very low effort, which adds to thequiet, untroubled manner the LX conveys on themove. This ability to provide power withoutrevving the engine as high gives the LX a differ-ent character than the Cadillac Escalade, whichproduces slightly more peak torque but at higherrpm.

The 6-speed transmission has a very low firstgear, complementing the engine's torque withenhanced mechanical leverage. The net effect ismore power at low speeds. That low first gear is

useful when creeping over rough terrain orwhen pulling a boat up a slippery boat ramp.For higher speeds, the six-speed offers twooverdrive gears (fifth and sixth), with a sixth-gear ratio of just 0.588. This very tall cruisinggear allows for quiet, effortless cruising andgreater fuel efficiency. At 2000 rpm, our testunit indicated a speed of 72 mph. At speedsover 75 mph we were able to detect somewind noise coming from the mirrors, butthanks to careful noise isolation work, thepowertrain is not the source of noise or vibra-tion until much higher speeds are demanded.

Drawing from its Land Cruiser heritage, theLX has the guts of a true 4x4. The four-

wheel-drive system has four modes, actuated bya toggle switch on the center console. It's possi-ble to lock the center differential in high range orlow range, or leave it open in either range.Normally, most people will be operating in theunlocked, high range mode, which should deliverthe best mileage. When there are patches of iceor water on the road, locking the center differen-tial helps maintain grip as individual wheelsencounter slippery surfaces. When the going getsreally bad, such as an ice storm or if deep mudblocks the path, locking the center differentialand using low range would supply maximum bal-ance to move forward without getting stuck.

Summary

The Lexus LX 570 offers luxury, exceptionalcapability off road, towing power, and Lexusbuild quality.
