An all-new 2013 SRT Viper coupe goes on salethis fall. The 2013 Viper was revealed at the NewYork International Auto Show. Once known as theDodge Viper, the Chrysler Group's flagship sportscar now flies the flag of its SRT brand.

This fifth-generation of the American hot-rodsupercar is intended offer superior craftsmanship,new technologies and ergonomic improvementswhile maintaining a visceral driving experienceand awe-inspiring performance. Champions of thesupercar project reported a gut-wrenching period ofuncertainty as they wondered whether there wouldbe another Viper. It has indeed survived and appar-ently in a big way.

The 2013 SRT Viper is powered by an all-alu-minum 8.4-liter V10 that SRT estimates will deliv-er 640 horsepower at 6150 rpm and 600 pound-feetof torque at 4950 rpm. SRT claims that's the mosttorque of any naturally aspirated sports car enginein the world. It's also an increase of 40 horsepowerover the 2010 Viper. Compression ratio is 10.2:1.

manual gearbox designed for shorter throws andmore precise shifting.

The new Viper chassis boasts a 50-percentimprovement in torsional stiffness over the previ-ous-generation version. A rigid chassis is the key tosharp handling, high-speed stability, and ride quali-ty. About 200 pounds lighter than the previous-gen-eration, the new Viper will weigh about 3,200pounds, the Viper GTS with SRT Track Packagewill weigh about 3,220 pounds. Weight distributionis reported to be 49.6 percent front, 50.4 percentrear. The front track is wider than on the 2010Viper. Wheelbase is 98.8 inches, overall length175.7 inches, width 76.4 inches.

The suspension looks like something out of a racecar, and essentially it is. Aluminum unequal-lengthupper and lower A arms with short upper arms andlong lower arms are designed to provide optimumcamber to keep tires in maximum road contact, thename of the game in hard cornering. Performancecoil springs, gas-charged Bilstein monotubedampers and tubular stabilizer bars front and rearcomplete the setup. The upgrade Viper GTS willfeature a two-mode adjustable suspension for race-car handling sharpness or touring on the street.

Electronic stability control is provided, a first forViper. The system offers two modes on the Viper:

Full On and Full Off. On the Viper GTS the systemhas four modes: Full On, Sport, Track, and FullOff. The settings affect the Vehicle DynamicControl and Dynamic Traction Control. Full Offdeactivates both but leaves active the ABS andElectronic Brake-force Distribution.

The new exterior design was sculpted for high-speed stability and a slippery 0.36 drag coefficient,according to SRT. The body is made of carbon-fiber and aluminum. It isn't a thing of beauty but ithas a dominating presence with its tough, muscularcurves and low stance. The cockpit sits way backbehind a hood as long as the deck of an aircraftcarrier. It's somewhat evocative of the new FerrariF12 but looks much less modern with fender gills,hood scoop, splitter air dam and duck-tail rearspoiler, more like a 1973 Chevrolet Corvette or a1963 Ferrari 250 GTO. But it isn't as pretty asthose cars. Mostly, it looks powerful. The hood isforward-hinged, so no worries of it blowing open at200 mph. The exhaust exits in front of the reartires.

The new interior will set new standards with premi-um materials and superior craftsmanship, SRT says.The Viper has not exceled in these areas in the past.Unlike on previous models, the interior surfaces ofthe new Viper are sewn and there's more padding.Sabelt racing seats use a lightweight Kevlar/fiber-glass shell and are designed to offer improved thighsupport. Deep bolsters are designed to keep thedriver in place when cornering hard. The seats arelower than on previous models, but there's moreseat travel with more legroom and seat-heightadjustability has been added. SRT says the 2013Viper will be the most spacious to date.

The 2013 Viper will come with a new 7-inch, full-color, customizable instrument display. In addition,the Uconnect connectivity system features an 8.4-inch touchscreen, but also provides a set of hardkeys for commonly used functions and traditionalknobs for tuning the radio and adjusting the vol-ume. That sounds good. Fussy controls are notgood in a supercar. The new Viper will comeloaded with Sirius XM Travel Link and HarmanKardon audio.

We have no idea how much these cars will cost butare guessing they'll run slightly more than the 2010models, which retailed for $83,895. No word on anew roadster.

SRT, for Street and Racing Technology, is theChrysler Group's performance brand. A new ViperGTS-R race car was also unveiled at the 2012 NewYork auto show and SRT announced it would com-pete in the American Le Mans Series.

Every morning as I get in my car to leave forwork, I see my neighbour from a few doorsdown pulling out in his new Audi S4. I alwaysdelay getting in to my car so that I can hearhim pull off; the sound of the V6 Superchargedengine at 6:30am always puts a smile on myface. I’m a petrol head, there, I said it. I wentwith him to buy used Audi S4 in Oxford a cou-ple of years ago.

During the summer months my neighbour andI often take our cars round the back and washthem and chill with a can of beer. We both love

our Audis andhave mutualrespect foreach other’scars. I used tohave an S4 butI recently trad-ed that in for aS5 as my kidsare now grownup and nolonger needlifts from me!

The S4 uses a3-litre TFSI

V6 engine, producing 328bhp and 325lb oftorque. It can do 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds, as isthe norm now a day it is electronically limitedto 155mph. My neighbour drove over toGermany last summer and while he was therehe got his car de-restricted so that he could“stretch its legs” on the autobahn.

Although the S4 is all about power and per-formance it does have very impressive fuelconsumption and CO2 figures. On a combinedcycle it can return 29.1 MPG and emit 225g ofCO2 per Kilometre. My neighbour has the S-Tronic gearbox which further improves fueleconomy to 30.1 MPG and 219 grams of CO2per Kilometre – not bad for a high performancesaloon.

Most of us do a lot of driving: it’s how we get where we need to be – and where ourkids need to be, and where our pets need to be… But despite the amount of time we

spend in our cars, they’re one of the easiest areas to neglect when it comes to cleaningand organizing. Some of us could feed a family on the ‘leftovers’ under our driver’sseat. Then there’s the clutter from empty water bottles, soda cans, coffee cups, andeverything else we use while driving. Not only is this clutter distracting, it makes itharder to find what we need when we need it – and harder to be sure that what we

need is actually there to be found.

The first step to readying your ride is to make sure that you have everything youneed, ‘just in case’. Here’s a list of stuff you should never be without.

During winter months, a cold weather kitwith a blanket, a hat, gloves, a scarf, and achange of clothes is always a good idea.Hand-warming packets like those fromHotHands are great pocket liners, and can beplaced inside children’s clothes in extremeweather conditions. You should also have acollapsible shovel, a windshield brush andscraper, and sand and/or ice melt crystals incase you get stuck (sand is best for the envi-ronment).

Now that you have all the essentials, you’llbe filling up with the other stuff. When youknow where everything you need is, you canreach for it without taking your eyes fromthe road. Car organizers are great for keep-ing clutter contained, and keeping necessaryitems in place. Whether or not you choose topurchase an organizer, These hints will help

you stay on your organizing track.

Create a trash receptacle: Purchase a cartrash can, or simply hang a plastic grocerybag from your stick shift. Either way, makesure that all garbage finds its way into yourtrash receptacle. Empty your receptacle reg-ularly.

Organize your CDs: a visor-mounted CDorganizer is handy, and prevents you fromdigging through your center console whilecruising on the highway.

Contain kid clutter: Backseat organizersare the best way to make sure your kidsaren’t crawling all over the car looking fortheir toys or travel cups, but a simple plasticbin on the floor can do as well. Make sure toremove food wrappers and travel cups everyday, so kids don’t rediscover them two dayslater (yuck!)

Designate a place for loose change:Although it’s fun to find ten dollars worth ofquarters under your driver’s seat during yourseasonal vacuuming session, that doesn’thelp you at the drive-thru. If your car does-n’t have enough cubbies, a plastic cup in oneof your cup-holders will do the trick.

Clean regularly: It seems self-evident, butmany people who are fastidious about thestate of their homes neglect their cars.

Vacuum floors and seats and wipe downyour dashboard and doors at least four timesa year. Clean the inside of your windshieldat least once a month, so visibility is notimpaired.

Practice product consciousness: Since yourcar is closed up far tighter than your house,the chemicals you use in it or on it willlinger longer, and in greater concentration(in fact, I’m sure that part of the light-head-edness you experience when test-drivingyour dream car is due to toxic PVC out-gassing from the dash and upholstery). Usenon-toxic cleaning products on windows,dash, and upholstery. Avoid car air freshen-ers, even the ones from Yankee Candle andthe like: they’re full of chemical fragrancesthat can aggravate respiratory conditions,and some contain chemicals which are car-cinogenic or endocrine-disruptive – in short,they’re no good for you. Stick with petrole-um-free fragrance sprays made with naturalessential oils. Or, hang an herbal pomanderfrom your rear view mirror.

Your car doesn’t have to be new-car spot-less: in fact, very few of us have the timeand patience necessary to keep it that way.But an organized car is a safer car, becauseit allows you to spend more of your timedriving.

OverviewThe Audi A5 are stylish coupes andconvertibles featuring luxurious cabins andthat handling precision that goes with Audiquattro all-wheel drive. The same goes forthe high-performance Audi S5.

The A5 and S5 were launched as 2008 mod-els. There are no significant changes for the2012 model year. Some new wheel designshave been added and there have been someminor changes to the packaging of standardfeatures and options.

Audi A5 and S5 are grand touring carsdesigned to cover lots of ground at highspeed while coddling two occupants. Therear seats are for the occasional adult pas-sengers or for bringing kids along. The A5involves the driver physically, audibly, andmentally though never to the point of mak-ing it a chore or less than inviting. The AudiS5 can be hustled down virtually any road ata good clip. These are substantial cars, how-ever, so they don't behave like small, light-weight sports cars.

The A5 looks distinctive and is very attrac-tive from any angle, with flowing curvesbringing musculature to sleek, aerodynamicforms and arresting light patterns. Viewedfrom behind there's a chance of mistaking anA5 for a British GT, but from any otherangle it's unmistakably Audi.

Audi interiors have beenracking up awards for a long time and theA5 is in the same mold. It has the featuresexpected, good ergonomics, a central inter-face system that won't drive you to cursing,and it's all assembled to a high standardusing appropriate materials. Despite thestandard all-wheel drive on most models italso has reasonable trunk space, so you canenjoy a road trip without sending clubs andluggage FedEx.

The Audi A5 delivers confidence and luxuryin a package not likely to be seen at everyintersection. The Audi S5 delivers more per-formance and luxury, which comes at ahigher price, yet it still represents a decentvalue among high-performance coupes.

Audi A5 competes primarily with BMW 3Series coupes and convertibles, Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupes and convertibles, andthe Infiniti G37 coupe. Audi S5 offers capa-bilities that it might also be shopped againstthe Jaguar XK or Porsche 911. All of theseare fine cars, but only the 911 can match theS5 with the availability of all-wheel drive,and with the Porsche it comes at a substan-tially higher price. Quattro all-wheel drivecomes standard on all A5 models except oneconvertible.

TheAudi A5 is powered bya 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinderengine that makes 211 horsepower and 258pound-feet of torque. EPA fuel economynumbers for the Audi A5 Coupe with thefour-cylinder engine, manual gearbox andquattro all-wheel drive are 21/31 mpgCity/Highway. For the Audi A5 Cabrioletwith the four-cylinder engine, continuouslyvariable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive, the figures are 22/30 mpg.Automatic quattros get an EPA-rated 21/29mpg.

The Audi S5 Cabriolet is powered by a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 with S-tronic 7-speeddual-clutch transmission. The superchargedV6 has 333 horsepower, 325 pound-feet oftorque on tap and a quick-shifting automatedmanual gearbox for performance. The feder-al government rates the S5 at 17/26 mpg.

The Audi S5 Coupe uses a high-revving 4.2-liter V8, with 354 horsepower and 325pound-feet of torque, essentially a milderversion of the engine in the Audi R8 mid-engine sports car. The S5 coupe uses a 6-

speed automatic or manual gearbox, the lat-ter the quickest of all S5 models. Fuel econ-omy from the V8 is an EPA-estimated 16/24mpg with the automatic, 14/22 mpg with themanual gearbox.

WalkaroundThe Audi A5 and S5 look great, appearing atonce formal and sporting. On each side astrong character line arches over the frontwheel and carries all the way to the tail, butapart from the bottom of the door and sidesof the panoramic glass roof there's hardly astraight line to be found.

Proportions are classic coupe with minimalbodywork ahead of the front wheels, a sub-stantial rear roof pillar, moderate trunk lidand a longer tail than snout. The door win-dows are frameless and visual strength isadded by a central pillar that hides as a darkpanel behind the rear side glass.

Cabriolets keep much the same proportionswith their folding soft-top (which folds in15 seconds, among the fastest in class, atspeeds to 30 mph) and really look good withthe top down.

Out in the open the A5 appears larger than itreally is; the Audi is half a foot shorter thana Jaguar XK or Bentley GTC and just a fewinches longer than a 911, yet it comes acrossat least as spacious inside as any of those.

In terms of styling, the A5 is the cleanest,the S5 the most aggressive, and the A5 withS line package splits the difference. Theleading edges of the car are the inner pointsof the lower grilles that separate the centralgrille section from the lights and side grilles,much like the leading points of a manta ray.On the S5 aluminum-look trim is used at thelower edge of the grille, on the outside mir-rors, and at the bottom of the rear bumperbetween the four exhaust outlets.

Bi-xenon headlamps give these cars thatwild-animal-stalking-prey look. Crisp, whiteLED daytime running lamps run along thebottoms and outer edges of these headlamps,originators of a higher standard for appear-ance and function; they can be turned off ifyou wish, automatically dim for use as park-ing lights, and are off on whichever side theturn signal is blinking for better vision ofsaid signal. Some car companies could learnsomething from this design.

Most wheels are five-spoke or a derivative,like the two-by-five propeller-blade shapedspokes on the S5 which use a fingered cen-ter cap to cover all the lug nuts.

Interior FeaturesThe Audi A5 and S5 cabins are designedaround the driver. A choice of leather isavailable along with different types ofwood, carbon fiber, aluminum or stainlesssteel trim. Every surface has a pleasant feel,regardless of the material from which it'sconstructed. It is modern Teutonic luxury inthe vein of multiple finishes that comple-ment each other well, with stark efficiencyor warmth determined by color choices andtrim components.

To enlarge the cargo area the rear seat foldsin a 50/50-split, allowing a pass-throughinto the passenger compartment for carryinglonger items.

The Cabriolet has a lightly revised rear seatbut the side windows do roll down. A wind-blocker cuts buffeting in the front if youhave no rear passengers. Ventilated frontseats may be equipped with neck heating,expanding the temperature range for com-fortable al fresco motoring.

The navigation system works asdirected. Sound from theoptional 505-watt, 14-speakerBang &Olufsenstereosystem ismostimpres-sive.

Outwardvisibilityis quite good, withrelatively narrow pil-lars and the side posts

far enough rearward that they don't interferewith lane-change or close-quarter over theshoulder glances. The rear pillars are gener-ally unnoticed, the rear window usefullylarge and distortion-free, and the edges ofthe bodywork not totally lost in the distance.

Cabin storage includes a shallow bin in thearmrest, one center cupholder and a phone-sized bin adjacent, glovebox, and doorpockets with beverage stands at the leadingedge.

The trunk opening is larger than many two-doors and takes advantage of the trunk lidlength to open well out of the way. Thereare four tie-down rings, a spare underneath,and 12.4 cubic feet of trunk capacity.Cabriolets offer the same trunk capacitywith the roof up, and lose just two cubicfeet of space with the top folded.

SummaryThe Audi A5 is an immensely capable luxu-ry coupe or convertible, especially for thosewho don't travel light or cancel plansbecause of weather. The S5 offers the samebenefits with increased performance and afirmer ride. Other cars may excel at a givenquality or quantity, but few can match theoverall cohesiveness of the affordable A5 ordeliver the grand touring blend of the S5.Both offer impressively handsome stylingand top-notch engineering.
