: MOKAPU ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS September 2016 . Aloha Mokapu Ohana! Thank you for a great start to the 2016-2017 school year. The entire Mokapu School Community are thankful for your support. Every teacher I talk to is excited about his or students and the great things we can do together. A big Mahalo to our PTA Board for kicking off the year with a successful PTA Meeting/Bingo Night. It is always good when we can get our parents together to support the school. Please make sure you share the information in this newsletter with your friends and neighbors. As we are still in the process of going paperless with the majority of our communication some parents may miss an important message. I encourage you to reach out to your teacher if you ever have a question or concern. You may have many questions now that school has started. It is never too early to send an email or note to ask a quick question or set up a conference. I also ask your help in keeping our campus safe. All adults on campus during school hours are required to have a badge. This is also for parents coming to school to pick up children at dismissal. Please stay in the corridor between the front office and cafeteria or stay outside of the sidewalk on the east side of campus until the dismissal bell rings. Finally, I invite any interested parent to attend our first School Community Council(SCC) meeting on Wednesday, September 14 from 3:30-4:30 in the library. The SSC is a required Council that assists the principal in the governance of the school. Topics discussed are curriculum, testing, safety, new school construction, and other items that may come from members. Please consider joining this important council. After this inaugural meeting all other meeting times will be prior to our monthly PTA meetings. Thank you again for choosing Mokapu. Please contact me at [email protected] if I can ever be of service. Sincerely, Chuck Fradley Principal Mokapu Elementary Dear Mokapu O'hana, The start of school seemed to be a whirlwind of new names, faces, and opportunities. There seems to be an atmosphere of caring and support from the students' smiles and "Good Mornings" greetings, to parents welcoming all of the new folks and desiring the best for their children, and the staff of Mokapu investing their heart and soul into the students and the positive energy of the school continuing to make it a great year. I am grateful for the integral service by the adults working at Mokapu. Thank you for all you do to make this school a great place for our students. The difference shows when we go above and beyond our duties, but reach out because it is the right thing to do and impacts the life of a child, our children. I love seeing the clean and neat campus, picked up, cared for. When we take the second to reach down to pick up the rubbish or help up a child, open a milk, smile, and greet another with care, we are making a difference. Even more substantial is when a parent wants to ensure our children are safe. Parents watch to make sure the children are in the right place, adults are wearing badges on campus, and folks are aware of children around the campus and what they are doing. When something is not right, folks say something because they care. As a reminder, for the safety of your children and as a positive example to the children, please use the crosswalks when leaving the campus. Crossing outside of the crosswalks is not safe. Please be a good example to the children and take the time to practice safety. In the end, please love your children. Give them an extra hug when they go to bed and talk to them kindly. Be gentle and be a good example. They will emulate us as they get older; be the person you want them to be. Aloha oukou, Tee Vice Principal Mokapu Elementary School :

Parents,

When Mokapu was originally built it was not designed to be such a large school. As such, some

areas like our parking, drop-off, and pick-up areas are not adequate. However, if drivers are

courteous, aware, and follow the guidelines it can still be safe and efficient.

Parking

The parking lot in front of the school is for staff only with the exception of the first 3 spots on the

east side. They are 15 minute max visitor spots. The first parking lot on the east side of campus is

also a staff only lot. 3d Marines have graciously allowed us the use of the next parking lot and

adjacent grass lot for parents and visitors.

Dropping off

Please use the loop in front of the school as your primary drop off point for your child. Pull all the

way up. Your target time should be between 7:40 and 7:50. Kindergarten students will wait

safely in the cafeteria until time to head to class. If you must you can also use the loop in the east

parking lot.

Picking up

Please use the loop in front of the school as your primary pick up point for your child. Pull all the

way up. You can wait in line or come 10 minutes after dismissal and drive right in. The east

parking loop is a less-preferred alternative if you must use it. Please be sure your child knows

which loop to go to. Kindergarten students will be released at the loop in front of the school.

Be Aware

We are working with PMO to make the east parking lot as safe as possible. Many parents and

children cross the parking lot and traffic to arrive and depart school. Please always allow

pedestrians to cross first at any part of the parking lot.

With a diligent eye and courteous attitude we can ensure that everyone will be safe during our

arrival and dismissal times. Thank you for your support and don’t hesitate to contact us with any

ideas for improvement.

Our Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support System (PBIS) will be kicking off this month with our first

monthly value of RESPECT. Your child(ren) will be learning what respect means, what it looks like, and why

it is important. They will also be given an Imua ticket whenever an adult on campus sees them displaying

characteristics of respect, which they can redeem on Friday after school for an ice pop.

Please help support our Imua values by having your child(ren) wear the color blue on Wed,

September 7th. Practice the Golden Rule

Practice Random acts of kindness

Practice saying please and “thank you” and “excuse me”

Make a point of not teasing and encourage your friends not to.

Be patient with yourself and others when a mistakes is made.
