Welcome to the makeover of MoellerMagazine! We first published the magazinein the fall of 1996 and called it Windows onMoeller. We’ve evolved since then, and nowin honor of our 50th Anniversary we’retaking this “golden” opportunity to refineour look to celebrate our Marianist Tradition.

Throughout the magazine we’ve woventhe threads of the Blessed William JosephChaminade’s* vision of education, calledthe “Marianist Charism.” His vision wasbased on his love and devotion to Maryand her example of faith. As I sit at the feetof Fr. Chaminade’s statue, I feel a profounddebt of gratitude. Educational researchshows that the key to any school’s successis its culture, and Moeller’s culture hasbeen grounded in the Marianist Charismfor the past five decades. It has been thecornerstone of the school’s success.

In this issue, we hope to illuminate howwe are living the Marianist Charism day today. For example, one tenant of a Marianisteducation is to “educate for adaptation andchange” (meaning we believe in continuousimprovement and preparing our studentsfor the future). In that spirit, AcademicDean Chris Wilke may have initiated oneof the most exciting educational softwareprograms since the Laptop Program began.Essentially, this product unleashes the

* The Blessed William Joseph Chaminade (1761-1850) founded the Society ofMary (the Marianists) in 1817, an order devoted to Catholic education andMary’s example of faith. Moeller is a Catholic school in the MarianistTradition, developing leadership in young men.

power of technology to be a dynamic, collaborative learning tool. See page 7,“New Software Offers ‘Explosive’Opportunity for Interactive Learning.”

Our news department, now called“Moeller Today,” reports additional wayswe are living Fr. Chaminade’s vision. On pages 2-4, we show how Moeller is“providing an integral, quality education”(which means we provide a holistic educationinvolving the mind, heart, body, and spirit). On pages 5-6, we offer stories on“educating for service, justice, and peace,”as well as “educating for faith formation.”

Finally, we show in several features anddepartments how we are “educating in theFamily Spirit,” a key characteristic of aMarianist education. For example, onpages 13-14 we feature our grief group, which is a support system for studentswho have lost of loved one. Originally initiated in 1999, it was the first of its kindin the city and has now grown to involve13 support groups in 10 local high schools. On November 12, The Cincinnati Enquirerfeatured the teen grief groups on the coverpage (“Teen grief support groups in highdemand: Organizations help young peopledeal with death, loss”). Our MoellerFamily Spirit is an important part of whowe are as an educational system, as Fr.Chaminade envisioned. We truly are therefor one another, especially in times of need.

So, let us know what you think. We arelistening and always looking for betterways to communicate with you.

May Mary’s peace be with you,

As Moeller celebrates its 50th Anniversary, our school takes greatpride in the accomplishments of our students and legacy of ouralumni. Today, we continue to attain excellence in our mission as aCatholic, Marianist school by educating the whole person. FatherChaminade’s vision for education remains the bedrock of how weapproach educating young men in the 21st Century. Althoughteaching methods have changed over the years, a Moeller educationis still rooted in the five timeless characteristics of a Marianist education: faith formation; quality education; Family Spirit; service, justice, and peace; and adaptation and change.

Committed to continuous improvement, Moeller has recentlyadopted new methods for the use of technology in our academicprogram, helping to prepare students for the rigors and demandsof living and working in a technologically based world.A key component of this effort isthe use of the DyKnow softwareprogram, which allows our students to become more engagedlearners and provides them with additional technological skills.(See page 7, “New SoftwareOffers Explosive Opportunityfor Interactive Learning.”)

The Moeller House Systemcontinues to improve from itsinception in 2005. The importanceof this initiative was most clearlydemonstrated during the recentloss of a senior this year, JoshPflum, in a tragic accident. TheHouse System’s Mentor Groupsserved as a primary means todeliver pastoral care to all our students as they worked throughthis time of sorrow. This student governance system also continuesto assist our students with their personal and social decisionsthrough the Man of Moeller leadership program. And the HouseAssemblies provided a perfect vehicle for celebrating our goldenmilestone through the recent 50th Anniversary Chaminade Dayand Mass. (See page 9, cover feature.)

While we honor and celebrate our past, be assured that the coreprinciples that have always been the guiding factors in helping todevelop the minds and hearts of Moeller students remain and willcontinue to grow as we look to the future!

Could “Welcome to College”become the next big idea in social networking? If so, you can thank the Men of Moeller forhelping to launch this new Internet sitethat helps students network with oneanother as they choose the college that’sbest for them.

Ed Jamieson’s marketing class joinedwith alumnus and founder Justin Bayer ’97and his director of partnerships, J.P.Gregory, to roll out their new business. “It is a perfect fit for my marketing class tobe part of the new business start up,‘Welcome to College,’ ” says Jamieson.“The students get a first-hand look at abusiness plan, marketing plan, obstacles tonew business ventures, market research, focus groups, database analysis, and socialnetwork marketing. On the other hand, they get to serve as a valuable focus groupbecause they are the primary target market.”

Welcome to College’s website helps college-bound students plan, rate, share, and comparetheir campus visits.“Research showsthe most importantfactor in decidingwhere to apply is to visit the campus,”says Bayer, whocame up with theidea in 2005 whilerunning the campustour program forthe University of Vermont. “We created thistool to help students and families keep trackof the many impressions and gut feelingsthat occur when setting foot on campus.”

The site launched in September, andJamieson’s Moeller students were in on theprocess from start. “My students have

The English Department initiatedthe Moeller Writing Center this fall– a program held during the M-Blockin the Chaminade Library throughoutthe year and staffed by seniors inthe English Honors Program.

“The center’s primary mission isto provide an additional opportunityfor students to become better writers, rather than to produce“perfect’ papers,” says EnglishDepartment Chair Geoffrey Girard.“The center does not, for instance, simply provide proofreading services. Instead, student tutorswill assist writers in learning howto proofread for their particularpattern of errors and to edit theirown work. They make suggestionsand offer advice about how eachwriter might improve his writing/paper. Anything from research and planning tips to paragraphorganization. Then, the writer mustmake his own decisions aboutwhat changes he will make tohis writing project and growas a writer accordingly.”

The Writing Center is open to students from all grades and for anycourse's writing assignment, not onlyEnglish essays. Largermonitors, donated bythe Moeller Moms’

Club, provide an easy way forwriters and tutors to work together. The center offers an additionalbenefit to the tutors themselves, forthe best way to learn is to teach.English teacher Eric Eble, whomanages the center and works withthe student tutors to develop theirown Socratic-teaching skills, notes,“I’m excited to see student leaderspushing the composition processoutside of the classroom and into amore relaxed, easygoing venue.”

“It’s really rewarding to helpteach underclassmen importantwriting skills,” says MichaelWright ’11. “I wish this lab wasaround my freshman year!"

The model for the conceptcomes from similar centers in colleges and universities. “Suchprograms are huge at the collegelevel,” says Girard, “and we hopethat, overtime, Moeller’s studentswill find and enjoy this unique

learning opportunity.”

The ‘Men of Moeller’ Crusadefor Breast Cancer AwarenessOne in eight women will develop breast cancer in theirlifetime. At Moeller, eight mothers of football playershave recently been diagnosed with this disease, so thiscause is personal.

As part of the school’s 50th celebration this year andto honor breast cancer awareness month in October,Moeller students worked to raise money to support theProScan Pink Ribbon Center, a non-profit mammographyscreening center in Over-the-Rhine that is dedicated tothe education and early detection of breast cancer for theunderserved women in the Cincinnati community.

Using the theme “Men of Moeller Honor the Womenin their Lives,” the Moeller Football Team led the effortby sponsoring penny races, t-shirt sales, and a pinkbucket collection at the October 8 Homecoming footballgame. They also displayed a“pink wall” where students, parents, faculty, and stafflisted family members andfriends who have battledbreast cancer.

U4U Students Sell Beads toSupport Ugandan School"Unified for UNIFAT is now in the accessories business!"says Connie Ring, founder and director of U4U, thestudent-led organization that supports 120 childrenin Northern Uganda. "We have necklaces, bracelets,

earrings, zipper pouches, and purses. The jewelry ismade from magazines! Allprices range from $3 to $22.Everything is made inUganda – in some cases bythe mothers and guardiansof the children in the sponsorship program. All profits go directly backto UNIFAT School.”

The long-term goal for Ringis to help the parents of theUgandan children in the U4Uprogram find a sustainableincome, and making beadscould be the key to theirfuture. “What we would

really like to do is start abusiness. We want to find outhow many of the parents ofthe children in our programcan make the jewelry – weare guessing quite a fewsince it is something of anAcholi tradition,” says Ring.“If we have enough, wewould like to employ themto make beads for us. Of

course, this means that we would need a full-timeperson in Uganda to manage such a business... It’s a lot to think about, but all these issues will have

solutions in the next few years.” Bead orders can beplaced by e-mailing Ring at [email protected].

During theHomecoming game, freshman KevinMorrison andDakota Sizemore collected fundsfor the ProScanCenter.

The Moeller Houses competed in the Penny Races that raisedmoney for the ProScan mammography screening center.

A Special Thanks To Our Military

Faith FormationMoeller Today

BACKGROUND: The International PilgrimVirgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima was sculptedin 1947 by Jose Thedim. He created his vision based on thedescription of Sr. Lucia, one of the three young seers who sawOur Lady each month from May to October 1917 in Fatima,Portugal. On October 13, 1947, in the presence of more than150,000 pilgrims, the statue was blessed by the Bishop of Leiriaat Fatima, Portugal, to be the pilgrim, the traveler.

Sent out to bring the Message of Fatima to the world, the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue has traveledthe world many times, visiting more than 100 countries, including Russia and Red China, bringing thegreat message of hope, "the peace plan from heaven," to millions of people. Many miracles and signalgraces are reported wherever the statue travels.

The Pilgrim Virgin Committee was formed to carry out the mandate set down by the Bishop of Fatima in1947, and Pope John Paul II said that the Message of Fatima is more urgent now than ever. The Pilgrim VirginCommittee continues to bring the statue to the world. (Background resource: www.pilgrimvirginstatue.com.)

Moeller students arenot happy. A recently implemented educational software program called“DyKnow” (short for Dynamic Know-ledgeTransfer) has become their new nemesis, andthey’re ready to revolt. Taking direct aim inEric Eble’s English class, they fired away, using Eble’s persuasive essay project tovent their frustrations: “DyKnow has a net-nanny theme in which someone is watchingyour every move,” one group argued.

Not so, counters Dean of AcademicsChris Wilke. “DyKnow is NOT ‘big brother,’”he insists. “It’s a learning tool.”

So which is it?Well, depending on your perspective, a

case could be made that it’s both. But evenso, most faculty (and parents) say that’s OK.

The software has two primary components: DyKnowMonitor (a computer monitoring system) and DyKnowVision (an interactive learning tool).

The monitoring program enables educators to take remotecontrol of students’ computers and block non-curricularactivities, such as playing games or accessing websitesnot related to classroom activities. “Though some students resent having their freedom curtailed, mostrealize that it is realistic that we expect them to use the technology for learning while they are in school,”says Wilke, the initiator of the DyKnow “revolution.”“Being able to give teachers the confidence that theirstudents (for the most part) have been significantlylimited in their ability to play games and randomlysurf the Web has led to an explosion in their online educational activities.”

Because the monitoring software works so effectively(hence the “net-nanny” reference), the interactive

New Software Offers

‘Explosive’ Opportunity for Interactive Learning

Teacher Jim Bauer reviews the results from an in-class poll to initiate a group discussion.

Page 11: Moeller Windows - Fall & Winter 2010

learning component enables teachers tocommunicate and collaborate with theirstudents. “The potential of DyKnow is that

it will raise the level of student engagement in the classroom, thus improve learning,” says Technology Director Jeff Gaier, a primary driver of the DyKnow project. “Once teachers get beyondthe basic function of ‘monitoring,’ the DyKnow Visiontools allow the teachers to engage the students.”

Jim Bauer, Business Department Chair and anotherDyKnow “driver,” agrees. “DyKnow allows me to bettercommunicate with all my students,” he says. Bauerbelieves the program provides practical ways to engageand challenge students. For example, he can initiatesmall-group discussions by virtually grouping students

together where they can converse electronicallywithout making a sound or leaving their

seats. “Students are comfortable withtexting and sharing ideas through

collaboration,” he says. Meanwhile,he can view these online

discussions through his moni-tor and provide feedback

simultaneously. When thestudents finish, he canreview their interactions, enabling him to knowwho has demonstratedmastery and who mayneed more assistance.

Elena Keyser, ForeignLanguages DepartmentChair, extols the value of the

discussion feature as well. “I allowstudents to ‘chat,’ as long as they do

so in Spanish or French,” she says.“This allows them to ‘toggle’ between

real-world and classroom activities.”The potential for individualizing the

learning process is one of the most powerfulaspects of the software. For example, students

can reinforce their learning by using the “replay”tool.

“I think one of the best features is the student replay which, once saved on the student’s machine, can be replayed step-by-step at various speeds which is a great review technique,” says Bauer. “This can be pre-recorded and studentscan listen and see the lesson as often as they wish.”

In addition, the instant gratification of real-time communication tools effectively engages this generationof students. “Seeing how DyKnow enables teachers tosolicit immediate and accurate feed-back from students is one of the best components of theentire package,” says Wilke. “The ability tomonitor workstations is certainly useful, butthe true ‘gold’ of DyKnow is how it makesthe computer an active learning tool.”

Another aspect of the vision software is itsability to extend the learning processbeyond the classroom. “DyKnow offers the potential for students toattend classes remotely,” says Gaier.

This “virtual classroom” component canbenefit both students and/or teachers whoare unable to attend class, says Bauer.

The DyKnow revolution has only justbegun. “We’re still in the very early stagesof introduction,” says Bauer. “As with any

start up, there will be alearning curve, and noteveryone will be satisfiedwith the results. This includesboth students and teachers.”

Overall, the faculty feedbackhas been “solid in terms ofexcitement and realizationthat the program has excellentpotential,” says Wilke. Thesoftware was introduced inApril, and teacher trainingbegan in August. “We arehaving continued facultyforums and other professionaldevelopment trainings asthe year progresses. Many ofour teachers have progressedimpressively on their ownby taking it on themselves todo the online seminars andother tutorials that are availableto them. I think that speaksto the professionalism andexcellence of our staff.”

As for the students, not all have yetyielded to the DyKnow Vision of education. But there are cracks appearing in their wallof resistance. “I have found more acceptancefrom the students as time passes,” saysBauer, “and by this I don’t mean studentsare resigned to their ‘fate,’ but that theyare discovering more productive ways toembrace this new tool at their disposal.”

Even Eble’s English students admittedthis much: “DyKnow is like a sour patchkid,” one group wrote. “At first it is sour,

and then it has the potential to be sweet.”M

“DyKnow has truly

helped our laptops

become an actively

applied learning

tool,” says Dean of

Academics Chris

Wilke. “Having the

teachers be able to

and collaborate with

students through

The entire day felt blessed, and I couldnot have been happier or more thankfulto work where I work. On Saturday, September 11, theMoeller Family lost a student in a tragic accident. This wasthe first time in recent memory that a Moeller student diedduring the school year. As Principal Blane Collison assembleda team of administrators and Moeller’s grief group facilitators, the team began plans to respond. “We’re about the Eucharist,”said Bro. Robert Flaherty, Guidance Department Chair. “We have an opportunity to meet this head on – and thefirst step in healing is trusting God’s power and majesty.”

On Monday the Moeller Family mourned the loss of JoshPflum (pictured left). Father Tom Kreidler, a former Moelleradministrator, was the celebrant. His homily held a singlemessage: “Christ can’t prevent pain from entering our lives, but He can heal it.”

That day the healing began. Some teachers used this timeas a “teaching moment.” Students talked about their grief inthe Mentor Groups. “As the Moeller Family, we share thisloss together, and we are here for one another,” Collisonsaid. “Just as Mary was there for her Son and is here for usnow, we take comfort in her love as we keep the Pflums, especially Stephen and the students involved in the accident,in our hearts and in our prayers.”

The Journey Ahead:

Moeller’s Grief Support Group

“It’s not over,” says Sheila Munafo-Kanoza, a co-facilitator of Moeller’sgrief group and executive director ofCompanions on a Journey, the largestfaith-based bereavement support service in the area. “You don’t reallyget over the death of a loved one. You just find a way to move forward.”

Munafo-Kanoza knows. She lost herhusband on her son’s first day of schoolat Moeller. Her sons, Tony ’97 and MikeMunafo ’00, later became mentors toMoeller students working through thedeath of a loved one. With Father MikeLeshney’s support, her son Mike beganMoeller’s first grief support groupduring the 1999-2000 school year. When he graduated that year, he askedhis mom to continue the group.

Pat Buckley, Moeller’s other griefgroup co-facilitator, knows the painassociated with loss as well. Her sonDan, Class of ’91, died 15 years ago.“Dan was killed in a random act ofviolence,” she said. “The Moeller community supported us in our darkesthour. They came to our home; theyhugged us; they cried with us. As ourother five sons attended Moeller, thefaculty and coaches continued to beencouraging to them. They allowed oursons to grieve and grow. This is how theMarianist Charism touched our lives.”

In September 2000, while chaperoningin Rome during the beatification ofFather William Joseph Chaminade, thetwo women’s lives connected. “Sheilaand I often reflect on the fact that thebeginnings of our grief work togetherstarted in Italy at the beatification ofFather Chaminade,” said Buckley. “His grace was certainly present.”

“The Holy Spirit brought us together,”Munafo-Kanoza said. “We shared ourgrief journeys and talked about theimportance of having a support groupat Moeller.” When they returned, theymet with Bro. Flaherty, who supportedtheir initiative. Soon after their meeting,Moeller’s first crisis occurred. TeacherJim Crone ’65 had a heart attack in thehallway at school and died. “Bro. Bobcalled us in to assist the students and

staff with their grief, and from there we began our first Teensin Grief Support Group.” It was the first of its kind in the city.

“We had some preliminary ideas (for the grief group) thatwe quickly used when Jim Crone suddenly died,” said Buckley. One idea was to provide food for the meetings. “Dan Ledford(Moeller principal at the time) personally paid for the firstdinner with our group at Ribs King. The boys ordered appetizers, ribs, dessert...it was a huge bill! Dan never blinkedand continued to support us in every way,” said Buckley.“Blane (current Moeller principal) has also embraced ourgroup and continues to participate every Christmas season. This has been an inspiration because his sharing allows theyoung men to see a different side of their principal.”

“The first year we had around 18-20 students who camefrom day one,” says Munafo-Kanoza. “Pat and I created aprogram that was a safe place to come. It was a place wheretheir feelings were validated. We educated them on thegrieving process, and we ignited a place where friendshipswere created. The students became mentors to one another…They have shared that it truly helps them to know they arenot alone.”

Nick Borchers, a former pastoral minister at Moeller, said thathe found the group to be one of the most valuable programsin the school. “The students who participate in this group

often are in a deep need of a place to express their fears, desires, anxieties, sadness, and hopes,” he said. “Their classmates don’t understand their situation; their familiesare dealing with their own personal grief; and they do notfeel comfortable sharing with other people in their lives… I believe the community built among the students has themost lasting and significant impact on their lives.”

The grief group meets monthly, and since then Buckleyand Munafo-Kanoza have shepherded countless studentswith their journey. “The boys feel comfortable here becauseof these two,” said Pastoral Ministry Director Jim Elfers.“Their experience is very authentic and very sincere.

Especially whendealing withdeath, authenticityaffects the students, authenticity helpsthem find a comfortable spot.”

“You really do seethem grow,” saidBuckley. But griefis cyclical, theyboth explain, andeveryone travelsthis journey in hisor her own way.

“I still thinkabout my dadpretty much every day,” Mike Munafo told the griefgroup last Maywhen they met at MontgomeryInn for theirannual closingluncheon, “but I look at it in apositive way.Now when Ithink of him, Iwant to make himproud of me.”

One Parent’s Point of View

On Tuesday, a parent sent Moeller’spresident, Bill Hunt, an e-mail, which hethen shared with the faculty and staff:

I wanted to give you some feedback, and to thank you for the thoughtfulplanning that went into the experienceat Moeller yesterday. My son heard, felt, and shared every single availablemessage there was for him to get. He was moved and touched by all thathappened during Mass…

After Mass, his Mentor Group had asmall-group discussion where he felt safeenough to talk about his feelings andthoughts and found it helpful to hearthose of the others in the group. Theboys and their leaders sorted it outtogether, and no one had a wronganswer. It was OK to express emotion. Then on to his Religion class where theyworked through it some more by talkingand writing their thoughts. Maybe, most importantly, they moved to theChapel to pray the rosary, the onlyaction they could offer.

(My son) was still spirit-filled by thetime he came home from practice lastevening, wanting to talk about his day,his understanding of the sadness andloss, and the impact it had on him per-sonally. He recognized some new emotionsand was OK to just feel them. But theoverriding emotion was love, the love hehas for his family and friends, but alsothe love his school family has for each andevery person in it. He knows it is some-thing really special, something he wantsto be a part of, and truly the delivery ofwhat was promised to him when heenrolled in Moeller High School. He wasan important piece of the whole.

I asked if he was able to do his homework, and he said he was working on it. He saidhe had a Religion assignment, and thatwas to talk to each member of his family totell them how much he loves them. So hetold me, and I told him, and we huggedfor a long time, and cried together, andsmiled like we had a secret, like we werethe luckiest people on earth…

MOELLER Celebrating 50 Years: 1960-2010 • 16

As I write this, I feel privileged to haverecently had a one-on-one conversation withthree of our students about an upcomingschool initiative. In visiting briefly withthese young Men of Moeller, I’m trulytouched by the possibilities that await eachone of them, here at school and beyond. I’mequally as touched by their real, genuinecommitment to this Moeller community. Iwitnessed the same community commitmentwhen the Moeller Family dealt with thetragic death of senior Josh Pflum in September, and it has been borne out again in my conversations with these three students –the Moeller Family spirit is alive and well.

Meeting these three young men alsoreinforces the responsibility that all of usconnected with Moeller High School haveto continue the tradition of excellence andto provide an education deeply rooted inthe Marianist tradition. We must alwaysstrive to ensure that our graduates leavehere ready to fully investigate life’s nextpossibilities. Just as Blessed William JosephChaminade, founder of the Marianists, was constantly acknowledging the need toadapt to societal conditions, we also needto keep adapting and improving the education we provide here at Moeller. Wemust continue to communicate about whowe are and what a unique experience weoffer to today’s young men. We must continually search for better ways to educateso that we can keep Moeller competitive intoday’s secondary education landscape.

As you know, a big adaptation and changefor Moeller occurred with the formal adoptionof the president/principal governancemodel beginning with the 2010-11 fiscal year.Simply stated, our model assigns me withthe overall responsibility for long-rangeplanning, fiscal management, institutionaladvancement (alumni relations, development, and communications), admissions/financialaid, our Catholic and Marianist identity, facilities, and our relationship with theArchdiocese and Board of Trustees leadership.

Blane’s overall responsibilities revolvearound academic affairs (faculty, guidancecounseling), student life and the HouseSystem, pastoral ministry, technology, and athletics.

Blane and I serve as members of ourBoard of Trustees, and I am constantlyimpressed with the passion and expertisedemonstrated by this body. Within thenew governance model, the Board hasfiduciary responsibilities, and they areapproaching their changed role in a veryforward-thinking fashion. I am honored to serve alongside a principal and a boardof this caliber.

As we move forward, I truly feel that ifwe continue to expand our students’ mindsand guide their hearts to even furtherserve the human community, then theirhorizons will continue to be broadened. The possibilities and opportunities in thenext 50 years of this committed Moellercommunity are both great and upon us!

I welcome you to join me, some students, and some faculty and staff for “Tuesdayswith Mary” on one Tuesday of each monthat 7:15 AM. We gather in the chapel forMass and then enjoy a cup of coffee andconversation immediately following.

As this edition of the Moeller Magazinefinds you celebrating the season with familyand friends, my sincere hope is that theentire Moeller Family has a BlessedChristmas and a safe, Happy New Year.

Warm regards,

Currently, Moeller has 13 named scholarships. InNovember 2009, Advancement Director Debbie Geigerformed the Moeller Scholarship Committee and askedPat Buckley to serve as the chair. “Our goal was togrow the scholarship program by planting seeds ofawareness,” Geiger said. “We brought together a committee of alums, current and past parents, faculty

“For as long as I can remember, I wanted to attendMoeller,” said Gabe Stiver. “When I was growing up, I listened to my grandpa and my uncles talk abouttheir memories of Moeller… I would see my uncle(alumnus Jim Metz, a former Moeller teacher) andshare my stories of attending summer camps, and hewould tell me that someday I hope you’ll be a Moellerstudent. Unfortunately, my uncle died of cancer, butthe older I got, the more I really wanted to go toMoeller. Thank you Dr. Kremchek for letting me dothis. Moeller is a very special place... There is a placehere for everybody.”

The students also took the opportunity to thanktheir parents. “I found out I had a learning disabilityin third grade,” said Stiver. “As my eighth grade yearrolled around, my parents began to worry thatMoeller might not be the best fit for me. But later my family and I learned about Moeller’s learning disabilities program. My parents knew that only asmall number of students would be admitted, and on the day they could register me, there was a badsnowstorm… Since I convinced my parents thatMoeller was where I really wanted to be, my dadbraved the storm. I want to thank him for that becauseMoeller has been a great fit for me.”

Rich TraditionsAt Moeller, the “Rich Traditions” extend far beyond the school’s renowned athletic success. Its richest tradtion lies within its Marianist Charism – Fr. Chaminade’s vision of educational excellence. This mission ensures young men receive “a quality, integral education,” which means Moeller educates the whole person – mind, body, heart, and spirit.

Building on Our SuccessWe have so many reasons to celebrate and be thankful this year.Along with commemorating our 50th anniversary, we areblessed to have your support, as outlined in this impressive listof donors. Thanks to all of those listed, our 2009-2010 “Grow Moeller” Annual FundCampaign raised a new record of $873,000!

We are now building on that success and have set our 2010-11 goal at $1,000,000. This will enable us to continuemoving forward in our efforts to close the nearly $2,200 gapbetween tuition and the actualcost of a Moeller education.

I hope you will continue to generously support the efforts of a lot of great people to “Grow the Moeller Tradition.”Every contribution helps buildthe foundation that unites us all in one cause – to educateyoung men in the spirit ofFather Chaminade’s vision. Tograduate great Men of Moeller.

Sincerely,

Bill Hunt, President

Life More than Baseball toBrent Suter ’08: Being left-handed

and able to throw a fastball 90 mph is

often an express ticket to the major

leagues. But Brent Suter ’08 of Anderson

Township has a lot more

going on in his life than

just baseball. The

2008 Moeller grad

(class salutatorian)

is currently the ace

pitcher for the Hamilton

Joes of the Great Lakes

Summer Collegiate League.

It's the wooden bat league that the

Cincinnati Steam plays in… Suter was

selected as the game's starting pitcher

and a dozen pro scouts were watching.

Also occupying his time this summer is

the “SURF” program at Children’s

Hospital. His mother, Shirley, a high

school and college swimming champion,

said, “SURF is a Summer Undergraduate

Research Fellowship and part of the

University of Cincinnati Medical School.

Brent is in the cardiology department.”

Majoring in environmental science and

potentially pre-med, Suter will advance

to his junior year this fall at Harvard

University. (By Terrence Huge, The
