Appendix: Mr. Knott’s Writing Test—A Critical Review

    Dear Mr. Knott:

First of all, let me thank you for your contribution to the midterm exam. In this memo,

I’d like to briefly describe what I liked about your test and what I think needs to beimproved upon. Let’s start with the positive !. You have followed our writingspecifications which asked for a description of a commonly known object. You also

provided glosses for vocabulary that you felt might prove difficult for students. I alsolike the fact that you included the weighting (10 pts) of the writing task on the student

paper. However, there are a few things that I think might be problematic for our students. The authenticity of describing a gas pump might be inappropriate for students. Most of

our students don’t drive yet and I think we should ask them to describe an object that theyhave some familiarity with and that they might actually describe in real life contexts. An

example might be a computer or laptop. Also, your usage of the British English term‘petrol’ and metric measurements might be confusing to students. Finally, I feel the

rubric should be more detailed. In your next draft of this test, please give students anidea of how much information (i.e. word count, number of details) that you’d like them to

    include.

I look forward to seeing your next draft by Wednesday, the 3 rd. Thanks for your hardwork.

    Regards,

    Mrs. Wright
