SALT AND TAN IN CRUDE OIL Crude oils and crude oil blends have
different physical and chemical which
depend on their place of origin. Even
if originated from the same location,
fluctuations in the physical properties
are a common phenomenon. Several
quality properties have impact on the
cost and ability to process the crude oils
in a certain refineries. Among these the
salt and TAN acidity content. On line
information of these data is critical in
the prevention of corrosion, fouling and
plugging of the pipelines and production
units of the refinery.
The MOD-4100 TS is on-line salt and
TAN in crude oil analyzer is designed to
provide real time data of these critical
physical parameters. Its technology is
based on wet chemical methods, based
on acid/base titration and electrometric
conductivity methods.
Implementation of these analyzers
enables to take immediate steps in
desalter and CDU process parameters to
reduce the impact of the salt content
and the TAN to its minimum.
Incorporation of the MOD-4100 TS
before, between and after the desalters
to operate the desalter at maximum
efficiency and at lowest cost to reduce
the salt content to its minimum before
entering the CDU.
The importance of measuring on-line
crude oil parameters is not only
restricted to the refinery operation, but
is also essential from a commercial point
of view.
It enables to check the crude quality
before and after loading and unloading,
during transportation from the well to
the terminals, during shipment and
during transportation from the
terminals and tank-farms to the
consumer. Furthermore, it provides the
crude analyzers with an effective tool
for crude blending, allowing to on-line
changing of the ratio between different
crude qualities to enable the formation
of cost saving crude blends. It is a
effective tool in maximization of low
cost heavy and opportunity crude in
blend, without loosing its requested
physical properties. of heavy and
opportunity crude.

The MOD-4100 TS analyzer has been
designed to perform quantitative analyses
of the salt concentration and / or the TAN
content. It is a combination of two different
wet chemical methods in one analyzer. The
salt measurement is performed according
to the ASTM 3230 adapted electrometric
method, while the TAN is analyzed
according to the ASTM D-664 adapted
potential titration method.
Measurement Procedures
The analytical procedure starts with
sampling of the process stream and
bringing a well defined quantity of the
sample into the analyzers measuring cell. In
case of the salt analyses a common titration
vessel equipped with a pH electrode, and
on case of the salt analyses in an ASTM
based measuring vessel.
This is fully automatically accurately
performed by an electronic system that
controls a set of pumps and valves.
After introducing the sample in the
measuring chamber, solvents and reagents
are accurately added and mixed with the
sample and the sample is measured with
respect to the ASTM described method.
After termination of the measurement
reagents are discarded, and the system
rinses/cleans and flushes itself
automatically.
Error messages will be displayed in any case
of a faulty status and/or exceeding the
specification values
Samples can be taken from vessels, pipes
vessels, bypasses, pressure pipes. According
to that a sampling system is designed to
feed the analyzer with a sample at
optimized conditions, which enables the
provision of precise analytical results.
The MOD-4100 AS salt analyzer is equipped
with an automatic calibration system.
Users Benefit
The MOD-4100 TS provides a high
quality salt and TAN in crude oil
determination in one instrument
