WelcometotheWorldofInnovation Theprimaryobjectiveofthiscourseistohelpstudentsdevelopbasicskillsincreativeproblem-solving,innovation,andhumancentered“designthinking.”The“designthinkingapproach”hasrapidlybeenadoptedbysomeoftheworld’sleadingbrandssuchasApple,Google,SamsungandGE,asabasisforinnovation.Studentswillusethisapproach,alongwiththelatestinproductivitytoolssuchas3-dimensionaldesignsoftware,3Dprinters,Arduinotechnology,andVEXIQroboticskitstosolverealworldproblems,andrelatethisprocesstotheirdailylives. Asapartofthefirstsemestercurriculum,studentswillbeparticipatingintheEngineeringcategoryoftheCentralDistrictScience&EngineeringFair,whichsendsitswinnerstotheHawaiiStateScience&EngineeringFair,andIntelInternationalScience&EngineeringFairinPittsburg,Pennsylvania.
Thishandoutwillgiveyousomeusefulinformationthatwillhelpyouachievesuccessinthiscourse.Iamlookingforwardtoworkingwithyou,andhelpingyoutodemonstrateyourcreativeandinnovativeside.Thisisaprojectbasedcoursethatwillrequireyoutoworkingroupstocompleteprojects,anddocumentallofyourlearninginanEngineeringNotebook,aswellasonlinethroughEdmodoandonGoogleDocs.OurfocusinthisclasswillbetodevelopanunderstandingoftheDesignThinkingProcessandtoexplorehowthisproblemsolvingprocesscanbeappliedinyourlife.
