The beautiful Scottish island of Islay is host each year to its own jazz festival, sponsored by Lagavulin Single Malt Whisky. It hosts an outstanding bill of international and Scottish jazz artists: last year brought the hugely successful Neil Cowley Trio (UK Jazz Artist of the Year 2013), and this year the stars include Magnus Öström, a central figure in the new European Jazz scene. To spread the good news about Islay to a wider audience Lagavulin, Jazz FM and The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show have come together to bring a taste of Islay Jazz to London. For one night only, on Tuesday 3 September, the Camden Jazz Café will be playing host to The Islay Jazz Festival, with great music from leading Scottish performers, and Lagavulin for guests to enjoy. Tickets include entry on the night, a Lagavulin aperitif, a dram of Lagavulin 16 yo

and a Lagavulin cocktail during the interval, designed by virtuoso bartender Ryan 'Mr Lyan' Chetiyawardana. On stage are artists who have all appeared at recent Lagavulin Islay Jazz Festivals: The Colin Steele Quintet - over the last decade trumpeter Colin Steele has made his mark on the UK scene, winning awards and wowing audiences with his Scottish folk-tinged jazz. His quintet brings him together with four other top Scottish musicians: Konrad Wiszniewski (saxophones), Dave Milligan (piano), Callum Gourlay (double bass) and Stu Richie (drums). He is appearing again at this year’s Islay Jazz Festival. And Tom Bancroft's Trio Red - A key figure in the Scottish jazz scene for over 20 years, drummer, composer and bandleader Tom Bancroft's latest project focuses on musical storytelling, with mash-ups, improvisations and original compositions drawing on the group’s extensive live experience. Trio Red features Tom on drums with Tom Cawley on piano and Per Zanussi on bass. www.lagavulinislayjazzfestival.co.uk

SPB Events, the team lead by Stephen Barbour, the founder and manager of Aviemore's MV Festival has once again put together another fantastic live music event for this coming weekend starting at 6pm on Friday 23rd. After being asked if SPB could supply some music acts for Aviemore's Winking Owl, they sat down with Amy Maloy and Paul Heywood from The Winking Owl and once again have came up with the magic, for what promises to be a great two days of live music. The now named Winky Fest, which is a free event and will support, Aviemore based charity, Disability Snowsports UK and Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS), will take place in the Winking Owl car park on Friday 23rd from 6pm and again on Saturday 24th from 2pm and will play host to no less than 12 live music acts. The line up is very strong for a free event said Stephen Barbour, he continued to say 'When Amy asked if we could perhaps put something on during this weekend, I jumped at the chance, not only because I have a soft spot for the Winking Owl, but also because it falls on what is already a great annual event in Aviemore - Thunder In The Glen. The Winky Fest is designed not to try and compete against the Harleys weekend, in fact far from it in anyway and being honest, we never could, but rather we hope it will showcase some of Scotland amazing young acts and gives more depth and choice to an already busy and very successful event running in Aviemore. We hope that this event at the Winky Owl will attract fans of the original music scene and anybody who fancies a taste of the future stars, but I must stress, this event is for everybody in Aviemore this coming weekend and we hope it will complement the fantastic Harley Davidson event in some small way as well' When asked by if this could also be looked at, as a small sample of what's to come for the 2014 MV Festival, Stephen was keeping things close to his chest and would only confirm, that one or two of the acts playing in Aviemore this coming weekend, will be back in Aviemore this coming March.

The line up includes some great acts from all over Scotland, such as Toby Michael's Rolling Damned and The Oxides, both fresh from festival slots at Belladrum and BFest, plus solo singer songwriters such as James Mackenzie and the fantastic Jemma Tweedie, another act who's just done at Belladrum and a performance at the Edinburgh Fringe, just last week. Young stars of the MV Festival 2013 include Freespeech and Emily Middlemas and of course fast rising star Tammy Miller will once again perform in Aviemore. You can't talk about the line up and not mention two amazing Inverness based acts set to make the trip down to Aviemore, both of which are not to be missed, they are Searching For Donkeys and Last Summer Effect, there will also be some great covers from Fife based Azure Pillars and late to the line up are rock'n'roll, country cross band MIR. The stand out act of this weekend though has to be the fantastic Scarlet Shift, these guys signed to Hidden Ground Management are up there and on the verge of stardom, they are just out of a sold out gig in King Tuts and Pivo Pivo in Glasgow and a top slot with BBC at the Fringe just last week. Scarlet Shift from Glasgow have been described as the Scottish U2 meets Arcade Fire and the BBC's Ally McCrae recently described them as 'A mighty, epic indie rock extravaganza' With tracks from their debut album 'Found' gaining more and more airplay on such shows as Jim Gellatly's In Demand and on Radio One and with another track from the album called 'Sparks' being used on some of this years SPL coverage, makes these guys a must see this weekend at the winking owl, because the next time you see them, maybe in the distance as they take to the stage at the Hydro Arena. The Winking Owl's Amy Maloy said: 'We are delighted to have such a strong musical line up playing outside the Winking Owl this coming weekend and hope everybody has a really good time in Aviemore, I just hope the weather holds good as well' Don't miss any of the action this weekend from 6pm Friday and Saturday from 2pm, come along and support the acts and the charities.

Following on from two sold out events so far this year – The Psychedelic Forest Disco and Kelburn Garden Party – this final event of the season is set to be another unique, mind-bending night within the spectacular surroundings of Kelburn Castle, near Largs. With a capacity of 950+, the Psychedelic Forest events at Kelburn have steadily grown in reputation amongst clued up ravers and music lovers as THE al fresco party spot in Scotland, if not the UK – people travel from across the UK to come. It’s a wholly independent, original fusion of top quality artists, high end production, amazing visuals and décor, and a completely up-for-it, friendly crowd. This year’s Carnival, on 14 September from 6pm to 4am, once again features a fresh and high class line-up of bands and DJs within the tropical, bass, funk, dancehall spectrum. We have a Scottish debut live/DJ set from Munich-based, Mad Decend stalwarts SCHLACHTHOFBROX, who’s fusion of earth-shaking bass, dutty beats and latin rhythms has seen them rock huge crowds around Europe’s top festivals. We welcome the mighty globe-trotting J*STAR back to Kelburn after his set at last year’s Garden Party, once again to showcase his legendary dancehall/hip-hop/moombah mash-up and selection skills. On the live front we have invited a very fresh project based out of Edinbugh and Glasgow – CUCUMELO RADIO fuse traditional Columbian cumbia sound with dubwise riddims and live trumpet and accordion for a delicious result. Upcoming funk brass band BRASS AYE? and Beltane house drumming collective THE BEASTIE DRUMMERS provide plenty of liveness to get down to. The eye-popping costumes and dance of ELETRICAT SAMBA with have the boys swooning as they showcase their amazing moves. Back on the decks, we have the great and good of the alternative club scene on board with sets from DJ ASTROBOY, SWANK & JAMS, DJ NoFACE and the full NoGLOBE crew. We have two of Scotland’s top bespoke soundsystems providing the bass, mids and tops at this one – ELECTRIKAL SOUNDSYSTEM and CHAPEL PERILOUS ART SYSTEM. Under the infamous Tall Trees, the hand-build tropical den known as SAMEDIA SHEBEEN will be installing themselves for a night long excursion into afro-latin party music, fresh from their trip to Boomtown Fair. As always we will have Kelburn’s unique production – high end lighting installations, original décor and art installations by TOO MUCH FUN CLUB as well hidden dens, barrel fires, and little treats aplenty. The bar will feature a special cocktail list for the night, as well as local beers, ales and cider. There will a full menu in the on-site café til late. Tickets are available direct at http://www.kelburngardenparty.com/

Now Scotland’s biggest and best festival of world music and dance, the Edinburgh Mela continues to entice visitors to Leith at the end of Edinburgh’s summer of festivals. This year’s headline act are The Orb, reprising the amazing performance they created with Ghanian master drummers Kakatsitsi at this year’s Glastonbury festival, but the rest of the programme is just as exciting. Look out music from Cuba, West Africa, Brazil, Senegal, Ghana, Spain, Kenya, and China – while still paying tribute to the festival’s roots with a wide range of south Asian music – and showcasing dance styles as diverse as hip hop, flamenco, tango, Capoeira, Chinese fan dance, Indian Kathak, circus, parkour and contemporary movement. 90s dance pioneers The Orb, collaborating with Mela favourites Kakatsitsi Master Drummers from Ghana, are the headliners on Sunday evening. It’s a great collaboration, exploring the similarities between contemporary Western and traditional African forms of dance music, and we’re delighted to be hosting the only other performance of this wonderful collaboration after their triumphant appearance on the West Holts stage of Glastonbury in June. BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne described the show as “one of the highlights of the whole festival”. Of course, the perennial Mela favourites are still present and correct. Over thirty stalls offering up tempting treats from all over the world are available at the Global Food village, this year sponsored by The Cooperative Group; homewares, crafts and beautiful fabrics can be bought at the Mela Marketplace, and our junior

audience members are encouraged to Go Wild at the Mela Kidzone, which this year is all about exploring Scotland’s wildernesses through interactive play. PROGRAMME DETAILS Cuban supergroup Son Yambu, Bangalore rock pioneers Thermal And A Quarter, Bhangra legends DCS, Navin Kundra and Mumzy Stranger, and the Canadian Asian-Celtic fusion dub group Dehli 2 Dublin are among the major attractions on the Main Stage. A strong African theme runs through this year’s programme, from West African percussion and dance group Ayawara, the jazzy Afro-grooves of Senegal’s Samba Sene and awesome displays from Kenya’s Osiligi Masai Warriors, to a three hour multi-artist celebration of African music and dance. On the World Dance Feste stage, Star Crossed, a major new commission reinventing the Romeo and Juliet story, brings together Brazillian Capoeira and Argentinian tango in a passionate, tribal piece of narrative dance featuring Scottish, Brazillian, French, Spanish and Argentinian dancers, choreographed by Irish/Spanish dance company Pasodos. The Typist is a multimedia piece of narrative flamenco, created by Kerieva McCormick and co-directed by Grid Iron’s Ben Harrison. The festival also welcomes two Scottish premieres of recent major dance works: Jugni, by the Sonia Sabri Company, which re-evaluates the female position within the Sufi devotional tradition of Qawwali, and Crucible, FIPA’s 2013 outdoor production, in which Indian classical dancers on stilts engage with the myths of the Earth Goddess. GREENING THE MELA This year, the festival have banned all non-compostable packaging from the Global Food

Village. The Edinburgh Mela is working in part with Edinburgh company Vegware, who create completely compostable packaging for takeaway food, to bring the Mela as close to zero waste as possible. A partnership with Edinburgh City Council will see the festival promoting alternative methods of transport – particularly cycling – to the Mela, in an attempt to encourage festivalgoers to leave the cars at home. https://twitter.com/EdinburghMela www.facebook.com/edinburgh.mela www.edinburgh-mela.co.uk

Living with teenagers can be a nightmare and most parents tread on eggshells 24 hours a day in fear of setting off a hormonal mood swing. Having interviewed 1000 UK families with children aged 13 – 18, British camping company www.olproshop.com has discovered that sharing an experience like a Festival can strengthen parents’ relationships with difficult teens. OLPRO found that the duration of a Festival is short enough to avoid irritations building up whilst also providing common ground for communication. Dave Stewart, MD of the www.freshairlearning.com and outdoor development expert, commented on the reasons behind this: “Our natural environment has long been held to offer a range of therapeutic effects - our body

biochemistry changes, our blood pressure drops and our mood lightens. We become open to fresh ideas. Many of the boundaries normally encountered in

the home limit creativity and relationships. These are relaxed or do not exist in the outdoors. This can create a sense of freedom, trigger significant shifts in perspective and enrich our conversations with one another”.

One of the UK’s finest contemporary Celtic harpists and tunesmiths, Rachel Hair from Ullapool, is to lead an innovative approach to the Blas 2013 Festival’s outreach programme. On Friday 13 September, the final weekend of Blas 2013, Rachel, whose sparky, mischievous personality shines throughout her music will stage two concerts at residential care homes in Inverness. A first class Music Honours graduate and Alexander Stone Award winner, her 2 highly commended solo albums have gained her admirers worldwide allowing her to perform regularly throughout the UK, Europe and further afield. The concerts, at Cameron House and High View House are for the clients and residents of the care homes, the care staff and visiting family & friends and organisers Music in Hospitals Scotland have received funding from the Highland Common Good Fund to part-support both events. Music in Hospitals aims to improve the quality of life for people of all ages in care across the whole of Scotland through the provision of professional live music. Concerts take place in hospitals, hospices, care homes, day centres and special needs schools, bringing the benefits of live music to people who need it most. The organisation operates as a registered charity throughout the UK and last year 4,238 concerts were provided national with 1,620 of those in Scotland. Alison Frazer, Chief Executive, Music in Hospitals Scotland said: “We are thrilled to be taking part in Blas 2013 and we’re sure that Rachel’s

concerts at Cameron House and High View House will go down a storm! These two concerts will mean that the clients and residents of the care homes will play an active part in the Festival; participating in the music-making along with care staff and visiting family and friends. Our many thanks to the Blas Festival for asking us to take part and we look forward to a great week in September.” The new departure for Blas organisers has been welcomed by Festival Director, Donna MacRae. She said: "The ethos of the Blas Festival from its inception has been that it should be firmly rooted in the community, taking music to people all across the area, including those who for one reason or another are unable to attend events. With our schools programme firmly established as a permanent part of the festival, we are delighted to be able to add this new strand to the programme in bringing music to hospitals and care homes with the generous support of

Music in Hospitals". Blas 2013, the premier event celebrating all that is good about the Gaelic language and culture of the Highlands, will run from Friday 6 September until the Saturday 14 and will deliver well over 100 cultural events at a variety of venues across the Highlands. This is the ninth festival and it will once again feature top performers and several new works. Tickets for all events are on sale now through www.ticketmaster.co.uk or local promoters.
