MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS

Maidens of Music kicks off this Saturday 7 May showcasing 60+ female artists, and it continues every Saturday in May, celebrating female musicians and inspiring those who have never performed to give it a go.

The action will take place from 3-9pm at The Globe Inn / Music Room Courtyard in the middle of Dumfries town centre - with all proceeds going to local charities. The gigs are being organised by Carol Brotherston, founder of The Music Room in Dumfries.

Carol said: " In my observations of late I have realised that there are hardly any women musicians “out there”. I have looked for them at festivals, busking, in pubs and in the clubs and there are a few, but not many. I began to wonder why. I am a bit puzzled and don’t think there is just one answer, but lack of confidence does seem to be a common problem. And I do know that you gain confidence to perform by “doing it”. Never let your fear stop you. Feel the fear and do it anyway. That is what

everybody else does. Yes they look like they are confident and comfortable but in the early stages they most definitely are not. Every single performer has had to get up there petrified at some point, but the thing is, they took that risk. They did stand up and they gave it a go!" Carol continued, "So, the purpose of Maidens of Music is to: Celebrate those who perform; Empower ladies to perform; Nurture those who are developing and provide them with a very friendly stage; Inspire those who have never tried it.

Music and songs have been performed within the walls of The Globe Inn for over 400 years, and it continues to support music and song for everyone. The purpose of The Music Room is to make more musicians, teach musicians, encourage musicians and make a stage for them. The aim is to make it a centre for the performing and creative arts. Check out the Maidens of Music website for details of all the 60+ female acts that will be performing over all the Saturdays in May.

The Line up for the 2016 Stonehaven Folk Festival is looking better than ever with some of the top bands such as Blazin’ Fiddles, Daimh, Saltfishforty leading the way and some of the best of the new ones such as the Scott Wood Band and Dallahan. Guitar virtuoso Tony McManus will be appearing and also hosting a workshop on Saturday 9 July. There is a family show on the Saturday afternoon with Artie’s Tartan Tales hosted by Artie Trezise (ex Singing Kettle) with a mix of stories songs and a lot of humour for all the family. There is a growing Festival Fringe with late night concerts at the Royal British Legion and “secret singing sessions” as well as annual favourites the World Paper’n’Comb Championships and the Aqua Ceilidh in the town’s open air pool. The theme for the Paper’n’Comb championships will be the “Sound

of Music”. For the more traditional taste on the Sunday afternoon, there is Tradition Bearers Concert featuring some of the best traditional singers. This year’s guests are Grace Toland, Peta Webb, Ken Hall and Jim Taylor. A range of workshops will be held on the Saturday and Sunday for Fiddle, Guitar, Singing, Mandolin Whistle/Flute, these will be tutored by many of the festival guests. This year's suberb TradFest in Edinburgh is drawing to a close over the weekend but there's still plenty to see, so check the weblink above for all this weekend's activities.

One highlight we feel is worth taking the time to absorb is this year's 'Trad Talk' on Sunday 8 May with the theme 'Crossing The Boundaries – Diversity In The Traditional Arts'. This is being held in the Scottish Storytelling Centre at 43-45 High Street. This starts at 11am and last 6 years with tickets at £20/£15conc.

The ‘traditional arts’ are often

referred to as ‘The Voice of the People’, but what do we mean by ‘the people’ and do they speak with one voice? In a Scotland now comprising an ever-shifting population, made dynamic by global processes of dislocation and relocation, how are the traditional arts to be defined? Who participates and who might participate?

This year's Trad Talk looks to

explore the diversity of voices within the traditional arts in and of their communities. Cathlin Macaulay reflects on the diversity of voices recorded in Edinburgh University’s School of Scottish Studies Archive, while Gary West and Geordie McIntyre look at the recording of working class voices from insider and outsider perspectives.

Harp and fiddle duo Twelfth Day (Esther Swift and Catriona Price) discuss their Routes to Roots project and perform material from it, and British-Iranian artist Roxana Vilk considers the question of culture and language in new settings and altered circumstances.

Singer Nancy Kerr looks at the experience of women in folk song, and musician and community artist Sarah Northcott discusses how the traditional arts can support highly marginalised groups in society.

The themes of the day will be drawn together and discussed by a panel drawn from the three art-forms of music, dance and storytelling: klezmer musician Gica Loening, dance organiser Gillian Wilson of RSCDS and Scots-Kenyan storyteller Mara Menzies.

Trad Talk is organised by TRACS in association with The School of Scottish Studies Archives, University of Edinburgh. https://twitter.com/TradFestEd www.tracscotland.org/festivals/tradfest www.facebook.com/tradfestedinburgh

Tickets for the award-winning Hebridean Celtic Festival are selling faster this year than at any time during the event’s 21-year history!

With ten weeks still to go, organisers have reached 80 per cent of their sales target and are fast running out of weekend tickets for the four-day festival. The opening show is sold out and closing show tickets are in hot demand.

Overall sales have already surpassed those for the 2014 and 2015 festivals, with 65 per cent of tickets being snapped up by fans living outside HebCelt’s base in the island of Lewis, confirming its reputation for attracting huge numbers of visitors.

The 21st HebCelt will be held from 13-16 July in Stornoway. Runrig will close the ‘coming of age’ celebrations on Saturday, 16 July during a nationwide tour in support of their 14th - and last - studio album, The Story, which was released in January.

News that the band were making their fourth appearance at the festival led to an unprecedented demand for Early Bird tickets from fans across the UK and Europe and as far afield as the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Runrig will be among nearly 50 acts performing over the four days. Others confirmed include the Red Hot

Chilli Pipers, Hayseed Dixie, Astrid, Julie Fowlis, King Creosote and Breabach.

Festival director Caroline Maclennan said: “We are extremely pleased with the ticket sales this year. This is easily our best performance ever, with big spikes firstly when we announced Runrig and put weekend tickets on sale back in November, and then when we released day tickets at the end of February.

“Since then sales have remained healthy and we are heading for a record year. We now have limited availability for weekend and Saturday tickets across all ranges and our opening show in An Lanntair has sold out.

“Runrig are obviously a huge draw, especially in our unique setting in the Gaelic heartland, but we have a large and varied programme with a host of great acts which will appeal to our international audience.”

HebCelt has grown from a small event attracting less than 1,000 fans, to an international showpiece for roots, Celtic and traditional music, drawing an audience of around 15,000. It is estimated it has generated more than £20 million for the local economy over two decades.

Last year, it marked its 20th anniversary by hosting its biggest number of live performances ever with more than 50 hours of music and arts events staged in the main arena in the grounds of Lews Castle, as well as An Lanntair arts centre in the town centre and other venues in rural areas.

McEwan’s Party At The Palace is delighted to reveal the latest artists who have been added to the line up for The Star & Garter stage at this year’s festival.

Organiser John Richardson said: “Introducing a second stage to McEwan’s Party at The Palace was always part of our plan to grow the event and we are delighted that it is happening this year. With such a strong line up on the main stage, we needed a selection of acts that would compliment rather than compete for our audience on site. Every band that we have playing seems to have a story to tell or a connection with the event in some way. It’s great that we are being able to showcase some great emerging talent, a few local acts and one or two that already have a great track record.” The acts are .....

Katie Doyle - Following a great tradition of singer songwriters to hail from Paisley, Katie has already wowed the audiences of venues as famous as the Albert Hall in London.

Saskia Eng - Saskia got in touch with PATP back in 2014 to ask if she could play. At the time she was only 12 years old and we asked her to wait a little longer. She gave us two years and chapped our door again. She already has a list of impressive achievements, performing to thousands of football fans on the pitch at half time at Hearts FC and winning Forth 1’s Edinburgh’s Got Talent.

Declan Welsh - Declan has recently been on the road supporting The Proclaimers, Echo and The Bunnymen, Ocean Colour Scene and many others, telling stories of love, hate, equality and girls from Bearsden.

Saraswati - Leeds born Saraswati has been spending a lot of time in Scotland recording her debut album with Scots pop guru John McLaughlin. You’ll hear two of her songs on the new film Brotherhood that hits the screens later

in the year.

The Luci Bains Band - Tipped for big things and signed to a major label many years ago, this will be the bands first gig in years. It looks like half of Greenock is making their way to Linlithgow to see them.

Altinak - A garage band in the true sense of the word. These local high school pupils rehearse twice a week in the drummer’s garage beside the barbecue, the fishing rods and the toolbox.

Into The Ark - Hotly tipped to be one this years’ one to watch bands. Managed by the man that discovered and nurtured Paulo Nutini, we are super excited about having these guys at our event.

Apache Darling - having won last years battle of the bands competition and doing a great job as opening act, we invited them back again this year to perform a bit higher up the bill. Having played T in the Park and sell out shows at King Tuts, their brand of infectious electronic pop is winning over an army of fans.

Kelvin - Another one that we believe will be destined for greatness, this four piece from Glasgow have just released their second single “Chase” and have been receiving great reviews and airplay across the UK.

Sinderins - Coming down the road from Dundee and headlining our second stage on Saturday 13th, Sinderins brand of folk and pop is the perfect match ahead of The Proclaimers on the main stage.

Anthony McElwee - Another invader from Greenock, Anthony is a singer songwriter, storyteller and all round good egg.

Gavin Blackie - Another previous winner of the Edinburgh Evening News and Forth 1 “Edinburgh’s Got Talent competition, Gavin has since went on to perform at sell out shows in his home town of Edinburgh and released his debut album last year.

Katee Kross - One of those quirks of fate. Katee was spotted singing at the folk festival in Linlithgow last summer. Sadly, it was outdoors, pouring with rain and the audience was rather thin. But she made enough of an impression on

the event organiser who was one of the few standing getting wet that she was invite to play at McEwan’s Party at The Palace - hopefully she will bring better weather with her.

Scarlet Baxter - Scarlet appeared at last years event and we were so impressed we invited her back. The London born singer fuses r&b and edgy pops to great effect.

100 Fables - Expect hi-octane post punk 80s electronica from this Glasgow based band. Blondie meets The Killers!

Crystal - Singer Anna Shields is a regular face on Glasgow’s Buchanan Street. Her impromptu busking sessions has drawn her to the attention of record labels and producers from across the country and even led to a spending time in Abbey Road Studio with Mark Ronson last year.

Ashton Lane - Naming yourself after one of the finest streets in Glasgow, famed for its atmosphere, was a brave move. However, the band somehow manages to capture this atmosphere in their own brand of folk and country music. Don’t miss them!

Classical violinist Michael Foyle from Ayrshire and Estonian pianist Maksim Štšura are tuning up for an appearance at this year’s Music at Paxton…Plus on 15 May at Paxton House in Berwickshire.

Critically acclaimed for their interpretations of works from the 17th Century to the present day, Foyle-Štšura Duo will perform works by Ravel, Bartók, Elgar and Kreisler in the Picture Room of Paxton House.

As part of its continued support of young musicians, Music at Paxton Festival (15-24 July) hosts two free one-hour taster concerts, with Live Music Now Scotland, each year in May and June. These concerts are designed as the perfect introduction to chamber music, and as they are free they are an excellent way to try chamber music and enjoy special performances by these highly acclaimed young musicians. Audiences can also make an afternoon of it with Sunday lunch or afternoon tea in the stables Tearoom.

Praised for playing with ‘compelling conviction’ by the Daily Telegraph at their Purcell Room

debut in 2015, Michael and Maksim have toured the world since starting their collaboration in 2012 and have performed extensively in prestigious venues across the UK including

Queen Elizabeth Hall, Buckingham Palace and St. Martin-in-the-Fields.

Piping Live! Glasgow's International Piping Festival, the world’s biggest week of piping, will return to Glasgow from 8-14 August. The festival headliners were unveiled recently by projection mapping a series of incredible images onto the city's National Piping Centre.

All images were crowdsourced via Piping Live!’s social media channels to celebrate the fact that Scotland’s national instrument has provided the soundtrack for so many of life’s big moments throughout history. From marching onto the battlefield to the mesmerising opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, to wedding ceremonies and funerals; bringing in the New Year, to celebrating Scottish heritage the world over – bagpipes are always at the heart of huge moments. Everyone has an emotional reaction when they hear the pipes begin to play – whether that be joy, sadness, nostalgia or hope – making the instrument like no other.

Festival organisers brought the images to life by having a lone piper perform a haunting medley of the best known tunes in front of the projection, before inviting the public to enjoy this year’s big moment – Piping Live!

Now in its 13th year, Piping Live! is the biggest

festival of its kind. Attracting 40,000 people from around the globe each year to watch over 5000 international pipers perform at 150 events across the city.

Some of the hottest names in traditional music will perform this year, including RURA, Anxo Lorenzo, Ross Ainslie & Ali Hutton and the world famous Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

Band performances will take place in George Square and on the steps of The Royal Concert Hall. The annual Pipe Idol competition and fan favourite, the International Quartets competition will return to the festival, while the Pipers Market’ will be back in George Square, providing the best fresh and local food and drink from across Scotland.

Roddy MacLeod, Festival Director of Piping Live!, said: “Bagpipes strike an emotional chord with people all over the world. There’s no other instrument that can make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck quite like the pipes. From major historical events, to personal moments like weddings and graduations, to shared moments of triumph like the Commonwealth Games or a cup final – bagpipes have set the scene for so many powerful memories at home and throughout the world.

This year’s line-up is all about celebrating the rich history and international diversity of the bagpipes while heralding the future with some of the most exciting new players in the traditional music scene.”

Ross Ainslie, performing at this year’s Piping Live!, said: “Piping has allowed me to travel all over the world and make a career out

of something I love. Some of my earliest memories in piping were listening to Gordon Duncan's "Just for Seumas" album on the way to practices with the the Vale of Atholl Pipe Band in Pitlochry and I’ve been completely inspired in the music since. Piping Live! is a great week for catching up with pals old and new.”

Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events, said: “We are delighted to support Piping Live! in 2016, an event which promotes this incredibly significant aspect of Scottish history and culture. The pipes are recognised the world over as a symbol of Scotland and we are excited at the prospect of venues across the city of Glasgow coming alive to the sound of songs new and old for the week-long festival in August.”

Europa Music Stage And Official After Party Latest Additions To Stirling Music Festival

Stirling : 8 May : www.scribblerspicnic.co.uk

MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS - MUSIC FESTIVALS

Popular independent music shop Europa Music is to host a stage at Stirling’s Scribbler’s Picnic Music Festival on Sunday 8 May for the first time.

The event held at Stirling Rugby Club aims to attract enthusiastic music lovers of all ages along to enjoy an array of acts whilst raising thousands for charity.

Europa owner Ewan Duncan said he is delighted to be part of the event after being a supporter of the Scribbler’s Picnic for many years. He added: “Europa has assisted The Scribbler’s Picnic charity in the past so it is great to forge a partnership this year. We have some great up and coming bands and are delighted to be hosting a stage. It is a fantastic event which showcases new music and some great established bands and is a brilliant day out.”

Now celebrating its’ 15th year – the unique day out is run entirely by volunteers and donates all of its’ proceeds to cancer related charities.

Maggie’s Forth Valley build fund, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Strathcarron Hospice, Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) and Macmillan Cancer Support have all benefitted from the events over the years with over £100,000 being raised for charitable causes.

Over 200 musicians and singers will be performing music of all genres including folk, indie, rock, ska and covers. Europa’s stage will feature the bands: Dave’s New Bike, Crashing

Jets, The Bell Jar, Tashmore Lake and Tumbling Dice. BBC 'The Voice' singer Laura Begley will also star on the main stage alongside acts such as Bad Name, Benny Gallagher from Gallagher and Lyle and Big Fat Panda.

There will be a range of charity and commercial stalls, tombola, raffle, 5-a-side football, dancing, food vendors, bar, kids shows and inflatables. Sponsors include Central FM radio station, ACL Vehicle Hire, The Tolbooth, Good Vibrations, and Roadshow Music.

This year the official after party will be held at the Corn Exchange pub which will make a donation to the charity event from their post-Scribbler’s event. When the music stops at the Rugby Club the fun will continue at the city centre venue with acts including The Shermans, James Lafferty, Brian Cattigan, Paddy Brown, Paul Moran, GT’s Boos Band, Johnny Hagan, Scott McGill, Scott Ashworth and Colin Davidson.

The non-profit event is run in memory of Stirling musician, teacher and writer Graham Whitelaw who died of cancer in 2001. Graham penned a column in the Stirling Observer called ‘The Scribbler’ which is where the name of the event comes from. Graham spent time in Strathcarron Hospice before his death.

Tickets on the gate on the day will cost £25 family (3 children 2 adults); £10 adult; £5 under 16 and under 5s free. Festival goers are encouraged to use public transport to ease traffic congestion locally. There will be a small charge for parking in the car park.

The Scribblers Picnic is currently seeking volunteers to help out at the festival. If you are able to help, the festival organisers would love

to hear from you. In return you will be helping create a fabulous event and raise money for these charities. Please email [email protected] for more information, to volunteer or host a stall at the event.

Doune & Dunblane Fling Dunblane 26-28 May Like many others, the Fling was conceived with the help of music and alcohol. It began as an idea at the Dunblane Folk Club, among a group of people fond of music and fun. And so in May 1993 the first Fling happened. Since then the Fling has gone from strength to strength. Somewhere along the line the first 'Fling by the River' began. Held each Fling Saturday on Dunblane's historic Drying Green, its activities have ranged from an open stage for local young musicians, fire engines, space-hopper races and fire-eating jugglers, to the annual Rotary Club race for 4,000 plastic ducks down the Allan Water. Gradually a 'Fringe Fling' has developed, featuring over the years everything from ghost walks, pub quizzes, plays from the local Drama Group, master classes in everything from fiddling or mandolins to harmony singing or bodhran, and the now-annual Thursday Jazz Night. www.dunblanefling.com

OCTOBER

Glasgow Americana Glasgow 5-9 October The sparkling Blue Rose Code will do the honours and open the 10th anniversary Glasgow Americana Festival in October. On Wednesday 5 October in St Andrew’s in the Square' Man behind the music, Ross Wilson has rightly won huge praise for live, sell-out performances including joyous sessions for the BBC. www.glasgowamericana.com

Ullapool Guitar Festival Ullapool 7-9 October So why is the UGF so special? Perhaps it’s the mix of music old and new, of electric and acoustic, of steel and nylon, of seasoned performers and those, like the students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, just starting out on their careers. Perhaps it’s the location on Loch Broom and the drive up through some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. Perhaps it’s the informal air of the whole weekend: there’s no “us and them”, no VIP area. Everyone mingles, and you’re likely to find yourself sitting beside a guitar legend in the Festival Club – or even jamming with them on one of the trade stands. www.ullapoolguitarfestival.com
