On the ranking list of business

tycoons Polish foundry industry

goes from strength to strength.

Top products quality, specialists'

expertise, versatile foundry

capabilities are Poland's foundry

engineering main advantages.

Krakow's Foundry Research

Institute's data show that Poland's

foundry engineering is ranked 16th

in the world and 8th in Europe -

year after year this sector has been

gaining increased importance.

In the European Union Poland

enjoys the 6th position in the

ranking of non-ferrous alloys

castings production. In the ranking

of aluminium alloy castings

production Poland ranks even

higher; its 4th place on the list, just

behind Germany, Italy and Russia

puts Poland among the business

tycoons. - In Poland there are

about 400 foundries which employ

25 thousand people. A vast majority

of casting houses are small and

medium-sized companies; for

several years they have exported

more than 50 percent of "made in

Poland" castings to foreign markets.

The latest figures show that the

export rate has been continually

growing and has reached almost

60 per cent. Polish economy finds

export a great chance. Most of

castings produced in Poland are

used in the business sectors

of automotive, engineering and

construction- says Zbigniew

Ronduda, Foundry Chamber

of Commerce Deputy President and

the President of Board at Odlewnie

Polskie S.A.- Production volumes

have also increased and

accounted to 1,049 million tonnes

in 2013. The 2014's estimated

growth is 5 ÷ 10 percent.

More active and versatile

The industry's another growth area

is the sector of non-ferrous metals

castings, mainly aluminium

products. Poland has also recorded

the increase in high-grade cast iron

production, mainly in ductile cast

iron casts.

Think about future - go to Poland

- These are the trends Polish foundry

industry should follow. Further development

perspectives for Polish foundry engineering

lie in the so-called processed castings, i.e.

casting components. These are sub-

assemblies ready to use at assembly lines.

Polish casting houses' main advantage is

readiness to a rapid change, adaptation

flexibility; thus they can follow the market's

demands. Many foundries are service

providers; they manufacture small batches

for many different industries. They offer very

short lead-in times. Our industry becomes

more and more versatile - says president

Ronduda.- In the 90's lower price used

to be a competitive advantage for Polish

casting houses in competition with EU-based

manufacturers.20 years later quality is the

greatest asset. No need to discuss it - quality

is already there; if Polish foundries deliver

to the demanding EU markets, they need

to observe world's top standards.

- We more often produce refined-quality

castings for automotive, avionics, home-

appliances, power engineering and wind

generation in particular as well as for the

broadly defined machine industry. - adds

Tadeusz Franaszek, the President of the

Technical Association of Polish Foundrymen,

a member of the Coordination Council for

Polish Foundry.- Export volumes of castings

have been constantly increasing; these are

the most demanding customers which order

the products. This serves as the proof that

Poland's foundry engineering is truly

innovative. We have also gained recognition

as a manufacturers of castings for the

construction and road industry as well

as for municipal infrastructure.

Knowledge and tradition blend - casting

know-how

Many-year tradition is Polish foundry

industry's considerable asset. The casting

houses have been in business for years;

not only are they the asset to accommodate

new, innovative technologies but they also

boast practical and hands-on experience

rubbed down generation to generation.

Management issues also important:

in Poland a casting house is usually run

by a foundryman; not only are the managers

foundry-engineering departments graduates,

but they also possess the necessary

knowledge and practical experience.

Foundry industry know-how and expertise

pave the way to success. - We have never

given up on specialized trainings for foundry

engineers. In Poland there is Europe's only

Foundry Department at the AGH University

Chinese castings manufacturers

- Speaking about Poland's foundry industry's

future prospects we cannot possibly forget about

Chinese castings manufacturers; in the recent

years they have been one of main competitors. In the free market economy however, castings

manufacturers find competition mobilizing.

Nevertheless it is important for the competition to be based on comparable and reliable technical

parameters and cost. Chinese suppliers have not

of Technology in Krakow; thus the industry is

supplied with the adequate number of

engineers. Suitable vocational training is the

result of the University's potentials enhanced

with collaboration with R&D units (including the

Foundry Research Institute in Cracow) - says

prof. Józef S. Suchy, the Dean of the Faculty

of Foundry Engineering at AGH University of

Technology in Krakow, the member of the

Coordination Council for Polish Foundry.- Such

specialists are in great demand with the

foundry engineering. In the recent years the

industry has been a subject to major changes;

this has been aided with the use of European

funds offered within the scope of operational

programs. As the result productivity has

greatly increased; this translates into

enterprises' competitiveness. If you compare

domestic and European foundry production

you will find, that this is two-fold greater than

if you compare the respective GDPs.

This means that this industry's efficiency

is much greater than Poland's national

economy's efficiency in general. This ranks us

among the countries which put foundry

industry on the top list of national economy's

strategic sectors.

observed these rules and thus they used to be a serious competitive threat for Polish and international

foundry industry for quite some time. However, the situation has been changing; many OEMs which use

casting in their products have decided to order in Europe, which means that they have also bought from the

Polish market. I am convinced that there other reasons besides the prices. Still, Chinese casting producers

cannot be ignored. They have been introducing quality assurance systems in foundries, they have been

modernizing machinery stock while offering cheaper raw materials, energy, labour costs. They do not bear

the environment protection associated costs either. On the top of that they are also very active in all areas

of business, they are actively involved in associations - Chinese players position cannot be underplayed.

In more general terms forecasts for Polish foundry's future - I believe that all the Polish casting houses

should invest in innovative technologies and equipment, HR development, cooperation with research and

development institutes. This is the recipe for Polish foundry engineering to be at par with the very active

competition. Competitors have already been going this way.

The bull market

According to the specialists, these will

be good years for investments and

production facilities placement

in Poland; business insiders are also

looking forward to seeing you at 2018

foundry engineering festival in Krakow

and Kielce.

The continuous modernization

tendency observed in the industry provides

excellent prospects for Polish foundry

industry in the coming years. The EU's 2020

horizon financial support will fuel Poland's

casting houses' strive for innovativeness

and technological excellence. The World

Foundry Congress is a unique, global-

scale event; the 2018's Congress is held

in Krakow and accompanied with METAL

Expo in Kielce. Economic development and growth

are expected to continue. In the 2014-2020's

financial perspective the European Union

member-states are to revitalize their

economies; they are supposed to be

innovative and competitive to non-European

economies. - In this perspective the Polish

authorities intend to earmark significant

funds designed to fuel the "smart growth".

Bearing in mind that no modern economy

can do without casts, that virtually all final

products comprise cast-element, foundry

engineering in general and in Poland in

particular are in for the boom. - this is the

forecast offend by the President of the

Technical Association of Polish Foundrymen

Tadeusz Franaszek.

Innovation - on top of priority list - There is a growing demand for complex-

structure castings made of specialised

alloys, tailor-made to designers' increasingly

stringent requirements. This context is a

good herald for Polish foundry engineering -

comments the Dean of the Foundry

Engineering Department of AGH University

of Technology in Krakow. - Wisely used

opportunity accompanied with full utilisation

of Poland's unique scientific infrastructure

and resources may trigger a further

qualitative change in the industry.

The bolder and more innovative investments

and projects in the foundry industry, the

greater the scale of success. It has been

shown that the Polish foundries' main

features are the will for on-going modernisa-

tion and the need for continuous capital

investments. This way leads to innovate

casting production.

- Another tranche of EU money provides

the opportunity to make innovation our

competitive edge, this EU perspective's

funds have been earmarked for research

and development projects. Many casting

houses are about to upgrade their products,

materials, technologies; they will make use

of R & D programmes - says Zbigniew

Ronduda, Foundry Chamber

of Commerce Deputy President and the

President of Board at Odlewnie Polskie

S.A. The Research and Development

Centre for Casting Components was

created in Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship's

city of Starachowice in 2010 by Odlewnie

Polskie [Polish Foundries]. This serves

as a perfect example of innovation-

schemes; the centre has already completed

the three projects approved and supervised

by the National Centre for Research and

Development. It is the only centre

in Poland. The R&D costs account for

3 to 5 percent of Odlewnie Polskie's

revenues - this result is higher than

Europe's average.

Kraków and Kielce 2018 Forecasts

for the Polish industry as well as global-

scale prospects for the years to come

should include the World Foundry

Congress perspective; this will

be held in 2018 in Krakow and enhanced

with the next edition of Kielce's METAL. -This will be a true foundry-engineering

festival; this extremely prestigious event

only confirms Poland's reputation in global

business sector of foundry - says President

Zbigniew Ronduda.- The Congress

provides an excellent opportunity to boast

our knowledge and expertise, technologies

and innovations. Thus the Kielce METAL

expo can become an excellent collabora-

tion platform for foundrymen; a meeting

place for the Western and the East. - I am convinced that EU programs will

generate tangible results then. We can put

on show our cutting-edge foundry industry

enhanced with scientific and educational

facilities of world-class level. This is much

more than taking pride in the engineers'

achievements. It is designed to provide

incentives for enterprises to invest and

establish production facilities in Poland -

argues Professor Suchy. - Not only will

the Congress bring together specialists;

in combination with the International

METAL Expo in Kielce this will also help

to attain the investment objectives through

discussions and business transactions.

Krakow as the host to the Congress is not a

coincidence; Krakow is the home for the AGH

Faculty of Foundry Engineering, the Foundry

Research Institute and the Foundry Chamber

of Commerce as well as numerous casting

houses of outstanding quality. I hope to see the

Congress as the culmination of Polish foundry

engineers' attempts and achievements, this will

also confirm our economy's standing in Europe.

events which make one reflect on this

particular business sector's condition

and organised by the World Foundry

Organization, exhibitions and international

Four years ago, at the previous expo edition,

we had the chance to see a whole array of

interesting solutions designed to modernize

the foundry engineering sector. At that time

it was the recovery period after the 2009

deep crisis. This year sees the sector's

dynamic development, we thus expect to see

ample of interesting and ambitious offers. This technology "festival" is owed to the
