WelcomeWe would like to welcome you to our 17th

Annual Open House and Private Treaty KickoffSale. We hope this finds you all doing well and2014 was a rewarding and prosperous year and2015 will be the same. A big thanks to all our pastcustomers, we realize how important your seedstock purchases are and how they affect yourcowherd for years to come. We really do appreciateyour trust and interest in our program.

Once again 2014 has been a year of challengesand rewards. We have struggled with hail stormsand lower grain prices. On the bright side is thecattle market. Even though the cattle prices havebacked off some it is still an excellent time to be inthe cattle business. The steer mates to the sale bullswere sold in January and brought $450/head morethan last year. We may not have record prices butthe market should be good for years to come.

This year we will be offering 35 yearling bulls, purebreds and balancers, red and black (19homozygous black). These were summered onpasture with their dams and no creep and thenon a high roughage diet since weaning. Bred andfeed with the commercial man in mind. The bullshave all been DNA tested and have Genomic-Enhanced EPD’s for added accuracy. The bullswill all be semen tested by Dr. Wulf at Red CloudAnimal Health and will carry a first breedingseason guarantee.

There will be videos of each individual bullon our website gelbviehbulls.com. You canalso like and follow us on Facebook at MLMGelbvieh. Even if you are not in the marketfor a bull, we would like to have you join us fora beef lunch on March 2nd. We look forwardto visiting with you and if you have anyquestions let me know.

Thank you for your interest in our program.

AGA GE-EPDs

How Genomic-Enhanced EPDsImpact Bull Buying Decisions

American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA)Genomic-Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) provideGelbvieh and Balancer ® breeders and theircommercial producers the ability to moreaccurately identify young individuals withthe right genetics needed to accelerate geneticimprovement in their respective herds.

GE-EPDs result in more accurate EPDs forbulls and females two to four years soonerwhen compared to using pedigree and perfor-mance information alone. The information canbe used to more accurately select sires thatexcel in feedlot and carcass traits or choosebulls that can be used on replacement heiferswith increased confidence.

Bottom line, GE-EPDs allow bull buyers tomake smarter, better informed bull and femalebuying decisions backed by more accurateEPDs. This saves time and money, reducesrisk and accelerates the rate of geneticprogress.

Contact the AGA to find out more aboutGE-EPDs by calling 303-465-2333 or visitingthe AGA website at http://www.gelbvieh.org/education/epdresearch/research.html.

EPD Definitions In This Catalog Listed below are the definitions of American Gel-bvieh Association EPDs and the units in which theyare published. The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next tothe names are available to members only.

Calving Ease Direct (CE): Percent of unassistedbirths of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. Ahigher number is favorable, meaning better calvingease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking todecrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daugh-ters to produce milk expressed in pounds of wean-ing weight.

Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented aspercent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calvingdaughters. A higher number represents morefavorable calving ease. This EPD is importantto a rancher’s bottom line because it predictswhich animals produce daughters with a geneticpre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.

Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probabilitythat a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressedas a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daugh-ters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared toother sires in his contemporary group.

30-Month Pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the prob-ability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnantand calve at three years of age, given that they calvedas first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a per-cent, again, with a higher number being more favor-able meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daugh-ters will calve at three years of age, given they calvedas first-calf heifers.

Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, interms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughterswill stay productive within a herd to at least six yearsof age. The Stayability EPD is one of the best mea-sures currently available to compare a bull’s abilityto produce females with reproductive longevity.

Growth TraitsBirth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in

pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, inpounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of damand a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicatorof growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the expected dif-ference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted toa standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator ofgrowth from birth to yearling.

*Mature Weight EPD (MW): Predicts the averagedifference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’sprogeny compared to their contemporaries.

Carcass TraitsYield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score,

which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smallervalues suggest that progeny will have a better lean tofat ratio.

Carcass Weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hotcarcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard ageendpoint.

Ribeye Area (REA): difference in ribeye area ininches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeyeareas are preferable.

Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in thedegree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed inmarbling score units. Greater marbling numbers arepreferable and are an indicator of higher carcassquality grades.

Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, fora carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fatthickness are preferable as excess fat can be detri-mental to yield grade.

Efficiency TraitsDry Matter Intake (DMI): Represents the average

daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds.A negative or lesser value is more favorable. Forexample, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B hasa DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume,on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day thanprogeny from Bull A.

*Average Daily Gain (ADG): Difference in aver-age daily gain in pounds based on animal’s perfor-mance during a feed intake test period.

*Residual Feed Intake (RFI): Defined as the differ-ence between an animal’s actual daily feed intakeand its predicted daily intake based on growth rateand body size. Animals with a positive RFI value aredeemed more inefficient because they consume morethan expected while animals with a negative RFIvalue are considered more efficient because theyconsume less than expected.

What Is An Index?Indexed are tools that allow you to select for sev-

eral EPDs at once, making selections more efficientthan selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weightraits based on their importance to a producer’sbottom line by using a trait’s economic and geneticvalue. Indexes are a good way to put selectionemphasis on traits that are economically relevant.

Total Maternal (TM): An index that combinesgrowth and milk information as a prediction of theweaning weight performance of calves from a sire’sdaughters. As an index, this value is not reportedwith an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM valuemeans a mother that returns comparatively higherweaning weights on her calves.

TM Index: MK EPD + 1/2 WW EPD

$Cow: Represents the genetic value in dollars ofprofit of an animal when retained as a replacementfemale relative to other animals in the herd. Ahigher number represents more profitable geneticsfor maternal productivity. $Cow will serve produc-ers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters withstayability and reproductive efficiency as well asother traits that lead to profitability in a productionsystem, such as milk, calving ease, moderate matureweight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’sgenetics also influence the performance of her calvesin the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feedefficiency and carcass value are also included in$Cow.

Efficiency Profit Index (EPI): An economic selec-tion index developed to aid producers in selectingfor more feed efficient cattle that still have accept-able amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight nega-tive pressure on intake, while keeping gain at aconstant value. By selecting on this index, produc-ers will be able to find those animals that gain thesame amount as their contemporaries while eatingless.

Feeder Profit Index (FPI): An economic selectionindex designed to aid producers in selecting sireswhose progeny will perform in the feedlot and aresold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPIhave higher marbling and carcass weight than theircontemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasisis put on maternal traits such as stayability andcalving ease.

MLM Gelbvieh ranks9th in the nation

as owner ofDam’s of Merit and

Dam’s of Distinction.

Gelbvieh breeder recognizedfor outstanding productivity

MLM GelbviehMarlin MeyerSuperior, Neb.

was recently recognized by the American GelbviehAssociation (AGA) as the owner of 28 Gelbviehcow(s) exhibiting the consistent maternal efficiencytypical of "The Continental Breed of Choice." TheAGA has designated these outstanding beef femalesas Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction.

Maternal productivity plays a major role inprofitable beef production, as nearly 60 percent ofthe cost of producing a pound of beef can beattributed to the cow herd. Considerable economicresearch has demonstrated that fertility and calvingease followed by milk, growth and carcass cutabilityhave the biggest influence on profit in a retainedownership (conception to carcass) system.

Commercial cattlemen agree that Gelbviehhave strong maternal attributes with the addedbenefits of fast growth and carcass cutability.Given the increased emphasis on efficient beefproduction, the Gelbvieh breed is in an excellentposition to increase its influence on the beef in-dustry.

The title "Dam of Merit" recognizes cows thatmeet strict selection criteria including early pubertyand conception, regular calving intervals, andabove-average weaning weights on at least threecalves. Of the 40,132 active cows in the Gelbviehbreed, only 5.0 percent qualify for Dam of Merit. The "Dam of Distinction" honor recognizes cowsthat meet the same high standards for superior,long-term productivity with at least eight calves.Just 1.0 percent of all active Gelbvieh cows qualifyfor this elite group.

For more information on Gelbvieh cattle andAGA programs, contact the American GelbviehAssociation at 10900 Dover Street, Westminster,CO 80021, or telephone (303) 465-2333.
