Accessing The Medical Language Lab (MLL) is custom designed for each text, so multiple MLL products are
available.
Medical Language Lab (Standard) is compatible with one of the F.A. Davis Companys textbooks. Each
new FA Davis Medical Terminology text includes an MLL access code in the front of the book. If a
student is using a used textbook, they can purchase an access code on the Medical Language Lab
website.
Medical Terminology Complete is our complete online option within the MLL and includes an
integrated e-book and lecture videos.
System functionality for Medical Language Lab (Standard) and Medical Terminology Complete is the
same in most areas. Slight differences can be found when customizing a class.
Medical Language Lab is compatible with Internet Explorer 8, Mozilla Firefox 7.0, Google Chrome 14.0,
Safari 5.0, Mozilla Firefox 7.0, Google Chrome 14.0. Medical Language Lab is compatible with higher
versions of these browsers.
Certain exercises found on Medical Language Lab require Adobe Flash Player. Adobe Acrobat or Adobe
Reader is required to view PDF files available within Medical Language Lab. JavaScript needs to be
enabled to view certain features of Medical Language Lab.

Creating an account Creating an account only takes a moment or two. Please note that if you are an existing DavisPlus
member, you do not need to create a new account. Your DavisPlus account credentials will work when
logging into Medical Language Lab.
To begin, go to www.medicallanguagelab.com and click the Login/Join button.
Click create account button
To create an account, click the Create Account button.

Enter your account credentials
Next, enter your account credentials:
1. Click the box next to Check here for Instructor Access.
2. Enter your email address
3. Enter your password
4. Enter your name
5. Click the Create Account button

Existing members Once you have created an account, log into the site following these steps:
Click the login/join button
Click the Login / Join link, located in the top right corner of the homepage.
Login information
Log into the site by:
1. Entering your email address and password
2. Clicking the login button

Resetting passwords You can reset your password by (1) clicking the Forget Password link, and (2) entering your email
address. A new password will be emailed to you. If the email doesnt arrive, please check your spam
folder.

New password generated
A new password will be sent to your email address. If you do not receive the email, please check your
spam folder.
My account
Passwords can be updated at any time on the My Account page. To access the My Account page,
(1) click the dropdown arrow located by the Welcome message, and (2) click My Account.

Create new password
Enter the new password and click save
Confirmation message
After the password successfully updates, a confirmation message will be displayed.

Dashboard After logging into Medical Language Lab, the dashboard will be displayed. The name of the product you
have adopted will be displayed on the dashboard.
After you create a class within Medical Language Lab, the class information will be displayed on the
dashboard.

Creating a Class In order to track students progress and to have students grades submitted to the gradebook, you must
create a class within Medical Language Lab.
Getting started To create a class, click the Create New Class button located on the dashboard.

Class details After clicking the Create Class button, the Edit Class page opens. This page is also referred to as the
Class Management Wizard. This is where you will enter the class details.

Class title
Add the class title. This is a mandatory field.
Class description
Include a description of the course. This field is optional.
Class start and end date
Enter the start and end dates for the class. This is a mandatory field.
The start date is the date that the Medical Language Lab class will become available to the students.
The end date is the date the students will no longer be able to access your class or enter work to your
gradebook.
Class ID
Each class created within Medical Language Lab will have a unique Class ID. You must provide students
the unique Class ID in order for them access your Medical Language Lab class, take your assignments,
and submit work to your gradebook.

Save your work
After you have entered the class details, click the Save and Continue button.

Confirming class creation There are three ways to confirm that the class has been successfully created. Within each option, the
Class ID number is displayed.
Class created confirmation message
After you enter the class details and click the Save and Continue button, a Class Created message
will open. The Class ID will be included within the confirmation message.

Confirmation email
You will receive a confirmation email, which also includes the Class ID.
Dashboard view
The Class ID will be included within the Dashboard view.

Customizing Medical Language Lab offers the option to customize the class. Features that can be customized include
the pretest, lessons, exercises, and the post-test.
Since Medical Terminology Complete includes an integrated e-book and lecture video, the steps to
customize lessons and exercises are slightly different than those taken for Medical Language Lab
(Standard). All other customization steps are the same for both products.
Start customizing You can begin to customize your class immediately after creating it. Or, you can customize the class at a
later time.
After class creation
After creating a class, a message will display asking if youd like to move forward with customization. If
you wish to continue working, click OK.

Dashboard
You can customize a class at any point by clicking the Edit Class Details link on the dashboard.

Pre-test customization If you include a pre-test, you can choose which lessons to include, whether the questions should be
randomized, and whether your students should receive a study plan.

Exclude pre-test
To exclude the pre-test, (1) click the button next to Do Not Include Pretest for this Class, and (2) click
Save and Continue.

Select lessons
Include all lessons or a combination of lessons within the pre-test by clicking the box next to the lesson.
Randomize the questions
Randomize the questions within the pre-test by clicking the box next to Randomize Questions.
Submission date
Select the submission date. Please note that after the submission date passes, student grades for the
pre-test will not be submitted to the gradebook.
Generate study plan
You may choose to provide your students with a study plan, which is a high level overview of the
students strengths and weaknesses based on their performance on the pre-test.

Save and continue
After you have finished customizing your pre-test, click Save and Continue.

Customizing lessons and exercises Medical Language Lab Lessons and Exercises can be customized.
The steps taken to customize Lessons and Exercises for Medical Language Lab (Standard) and Medical
Terminology Complete are slightly different due to the product differences.
The following steps apply to Medical Language Lab (Standard) and Medical Terminology Complete.
Additional features that can be customized for Medical Terminology are addressed in the next section.
There are four Exercise types within each Lesson: Critical Listening, Response, Generation and Practice.
The steps taken to customize Lessons and Exercises are the same no matter which Lesson or Exercise
you are working in.

Choose a lesson
Choose a lesson that you would like to customize.
Lesson settings
When customizing a Lesson, you may choose the same settings for all Exercises contained within that
lesson. For example, you may want to have the same grading approach for all Exercises within a Lesson.
Assignment start dates
The Assignment Start Date is the date on which the content within this lesson will be
displayed to your students. It is also the date on which your students can begin to submit work
from this lesson to the gradebook. If you decide not to customize this field, the assignment
start date will default to the first date of the class.

Universal assignment due dates
You can set a universal due date for all Exercises in the Lesson. Please note that after the assignment
due date passes, your students cannot submit work to your gradebook for that Lesson. If you decide not
to customize this field, the assignment due date will default to the last day of the class.

Universal exercise grading rules
You can set universal grading rules for all Exercises within a Lesson. You may choose to have the
students graded on the first attempt or to allow the students to practice before being graded.
Group assignments for generation exercises
For Generation Exercises, students are asked to use medical terminology in an unstructured format.
Specifically, students record or write a sentence where they decide how to best use a medical term.
Generation exercises are not graded by the tool.
You can choose to make the text and audio generation exercises a group assignment. If you decide to
use this feature, the students submissions will be posted to the Group Discussion Forum where other
students in the small group may view the submission and make comments and suggestions.

Continue to next lesson
After you have completed customizing the Lesson, click the Continue to Next Lesson button.
Confirmation message
A confirmation message will be displayed.

Exercise settings
You may choose to take a more granular approach and customize a Lesson on an Exercise-by-Exercise
basis.

Choose an exercise type
First, choose the Exercise type that you would like to customize. To expand an exercise, click on the far
right side of the grey bar. Please note that you can view the actual Exercise by clicking on the Exercise
link.
Remove an exercise
To remove an exercise, click box next to the exercise number.

Assignment start date
The Assignment Start Date is the date on which the Exercise within this lesson will be
displayed to your students. It is also the date on which your students can work on the
assignment and submit work to the gradebook. If you decide not to customize this field, the
assignment start date will default to the first date of the class.

Assignment due date
Set a due date by clicking on the calendar and selecting the desired date. This is the last day your
students will be able to submit work from this Exercise to your gradebook.

Grading rules
Select the grading rules by clicking on the arrow button. You may choose to have the students graded
on first attempt. Or, you may choose to allow the students to practice as many times as they like, and
then choose when they are ready to be graded.

Continue to next lesson
After you have completed customizing the Exercises, click the Continue to Next Lesson button.
Confirmation message
A confirmation message will be displayed.

Customizing Medical Terminology Complete The Ebook and lecture videos within Medical Terminology Complete can also be customized.
Read assignment start date
The Assignment Start Date for the E-book reflects the day that the content will become viewable to the
students.
Read assignment end date
The Assignment End Date for the E-book reflects the last day that the content will be viewable to the
students.

Watch assignment start date
The Assignment Start Date for the Lecture Videos reflects the day that the content will become viewable
to the students.
Watch assignment end date
The Assignment End Date for the Lecture Videos reflects the last day that the content will be viewable
to the students.

Post-test If you include a post-test , you can choose which lessons to include and whether the questions should be
randomized.
Exclude post-test
To exclude the post-test, (1) click the button next to Do Not Include Posttest for this Class, and (2) click
Save and Continue.

Select lessons
You can include all lessons or a combination of lessons within the post-test by clicking the box next to
the lesson name.
Randomize the questions
Randomize the questions within the post-test by clicking the box next to Randomize Questions.
Submission date
Select the submission date. Please note that after the submission date passes, student grades for the
pretest will not be submitted to your gradebook.

Save and continue
After you have finished customizing your post-test, click Save and Continue.

Class Admittance Once you have created a class and shared the Class ID with your students, the students will place a
request within Medical Language Lab to join your class. You must admit the students into your class
before the students can view your assignments and submit work to your gradebook.
Alert: Students waiting to be admitted When a student is waiting to be admitted into your class, an alert will be displayed on the Dashboard.
The number of students waiting to be admitted will be displayed next to Students. To admit or reject
students into your class, click the Students button.

Student enrollment To begin admitting students into the class, locate the students name on the Notifications area on the
Manage Students page.
Admitting students
To accept a student into the class, click the Accept button located to the right of the students name.
Please note that you do not have to check the box next to the students name in order to accept them
into the class.

Confirm student enrollment
Next, confirm the student enrollment by clicking OK.
Confirmation message
An Enrolled confirmation message will be displayed after you have accepted a student into the class.

Rejecting admittance
You may choose to prevent a student from joining your Medical Language Lab class.
Reject button
To prevent a student from entering your class, click the Reject button located to the right of the
students name. Please note that box next to the students name does not have to be checked to reject
them from the class. Additionally, you may enter a reason for rejecting a student prior to rejecting them
from the class; this is an optional field.
Confirmation message
A confirmation message will be displayed after the student is rejected from the class.

Bulk approvals
Bulk approve or reject students by clicking (1) Select All button, and then (2) Accept All or Reject
All.

Gradebook Each class within Medical Language Lab will have a gradebook that can be incorporated into Learning
Management Systems.
Access the gradebook To access the gradebook, click Gradebook from the dashboard.

Comparisons You can compare a student to the rest of the class by clicking the compare button.

Individual student performance
To view how students are performing on an individual basis, click View Detail next to the students
name.
Export gradebook
Export the Medical Language Lab gradebook and incorporate it into a Learning Management System
(LMS) by downloading it from Medical Language Lab and uploading it into the LMS. To start this
process, click the Export Gradebook from the Instructor gradebook page.

Additional Features
Assignments Generation Exercises are not graded by the tool. When a Generation Exercise needs to be graded by
you, an alert will show up on your dashboard that there are assignments waiting to be graded.
To access the assignment, (1) click assignment, and (2) click the Exercise name.

Group assignments If you choose to make the Generation Exercises a group exercise, you can create groups within the class
by clicking: (1) Manage Groups on the dashboard, and (2) clicking the Custom Create Groups or Auto
Create Groups button.

Clone class If you teach the same class to multiple sections or from semester-to-semester, you may want to copy, or
clone the class.
Getting started
To Clone the class, click Clone Class on the dashboard. Then, adjust the class customization settings as
needed.

Edit class To amend or edit a Lesson after the class is created, click the Edit Class Details button on the
dashboard.
