Course Description and Requirements
MLD-830 explores the theory and practice of entrepreneurial management in the private and social sectors. The course seeks to prepare students for future work and leadership in and with entrepreneurial ventures and to provide an informed perspective to those who may someday promote or regulate such ventures. Unlike its sister Spring course, MLD-831, MLD-830 is geared to students interested in, but not committed to, entrepreneurial careers.
For most of the course, with the help of readings and case studies, we will discuss and explore entrepreneurial strategies, management and leadership in each sector. By the fourth session (September 28) the class will divide into small groups to work on a research project and presentation. (These working sessions will occur outside of normal class hours, with the instructor/CA attending some of them. They will be scheduled at mutually convenient times in the evenings or weekends.) Each group will present their findings in late November to the full class. In addition to the presentation, there will be a 2 hour final take home exam. Grades will be based on 1/3 class participation, 1/3 final exam and 1/3 group research project.
Students without prior academic or professional exposure to financial management are urged to enroll in Entrepreneurial Finance (MLD-829 MA) concurrently.
Recommended Texts: Three books will figure prominently in the course, which you should own: Peter F. Drucker, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Harper & Row Publishers, 1985)
