The first time I remember com-ing to New York

    City as a child was

for the 1964 World’s Fair. During that visit, I

saw my first Broadway play, “Fiddler on the

Roof,” at the time staring Zero Mostel. One

of the songs, a duet between Teveye and

Goldie, ends with the words, “after 25 years,

    it’s nice to know.”

After 25 years, the same rings true for

me, today. I was overwhelmed on January

25, when so many of you joined together

in the Ballroom to celebrate these 25 years

with Ellen, family and me, and by the let-

ters, emails, phone calls and myriad of

other good wishes I received from those

who could not personally attend. And I

was equally overwhelmed on Sunday morn-

ing when our religious school families also

gathered to share in the celebration.

I was so moved by your memories, by

your good wishes, and by our mutual vi-

    sion of our future.

I am also thankful. So, in this month’s

newsletter, I want to extend my thanks to

all of you who made this “event” in the

history of our congregation so meaningful,

fun, warm and poignant. I will not enter

the danger zone of trying to remember the

names of all those who worked so tirelessly

to make every detail so special. You each

did. I will thank the co-chairs of the eve-

ning, Dorothy Cohen and Donna Gross, and

    their committee; our presidents, Robert

Berns and Fern Spitzer; and our religious

    school co-directors, Michelle Nulman and

Gail Sulkin, who planned the Sunday fes-

tivities. I know there is an incredibly long

list of others who made this weekend spe-

cial, so thanks also to each of you.

In recalling the song from “Fiddler,” I

think about the fact that it was a duet.

(You may or may not know that originally

there was another song planned, a solo for

Goldie, but it made way for this duet.) I

believe it is the duet—the partnership—

we, our congregation and myself have cre-

ated during these past 25 years that has

been a great part of our success. In fact,

one of the words that the Hebrew gema-

tria can create for the number 25 means

“to bind together and to fortify.” It is the

partnership , the binding together, that we

have shared in the past that I also hope

will create new harmonies in our duet for

our future. After all, after 25 years, it’s

    nice to know.

With many thanks and with overflowing gratitude, rabbi Nesson

In February, we’ll celebrate Presi-dents’ Day. And I’m

    happy that I live in

a country where the president comes to power

through free and fair elections. This does not

take place for decades in countries that are

run by a dictatorship. I lived in a country with

such a regime and saw with my own eyes on

live TV how the Communist Congress “unani-

mously” elected the head of state.

Who were these electors? These people

were mostly uneducated and were easy to

manipulate. They were only citizens loy-

al to the Party, adopted members of the

CPSU. Many writers and poets wrote about

these dictators in laudatory odes, calling

them wise teachers who would eventually

lead the world to Communism, in order

to gain the confidence and benefits from

    these respected leaders.

The following excerpt is an example of

    this profound respect:

“This is about you, Joseph, (Stalin) hap-

py Soviet people sing: All my life you’re

fighting, father, for our happiness, Your

    name is hard like steel, Deep is your idea;

it is as brilliant as lightning. Long live

    Comrade Stalin!”

This is just one example of the poems

written by authors who praised Stalin as

a national hero in order to gain favor in

his eyes. However, there were of course

    adequate people who understood that

the state permeated with lies and deceit.

There were other poets who did not agree

with the state and would speak up against

it. I would like to share with you some

interesting material, which some of these

    other poets wrote.

The following was written by Joseph

Brodsky to the Czech President Václav

Havel in 1993 when he was already in the

    United States:

“In your abilities, you should think not

only to convey your knowledge to the peo-

ple, but even more to correct their soul’s

condition; help them become like you. You

may encourage your people, not just be-

cause you stood up to the regime and went

to prison for it, but because of the books

    that you read.

“For starters, I would suggest the se-

rial production of some of these books in

the main daily newspapers of the country

given to the population of Czech Republic.

It can even be done by decree and I do not

    think your Parliament would object.

    “Giving your people Proust, Kafka,

Faulkner, Platonov, Camus or Joyce, you

can turn at least one nation in Central Eu-

    rope into a civilized nation.”

Also, there were dissidents who were

trying to write the truth but their books

were banned and many were sent off to

jail. Some of you may have heard of them:

    Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Joseph Brod-

sky, both of whom won the Nobel Prize in

Literature, and Alexander Galich. They all

spent a lot of time in the prison and were

    also expelled from the country.

Again, I am happy that I live in a free

country with my family and that I am a

    citizen of the USA.

God bless America! B’Shalom, Cantor V. Yucht

In 1924, the House of Israel at 177 Speedwell Av-

    enue in Morristown

    was outgrowing its

facility in a recently renovated old build-

ing at that location. The board of directors

was split on how to move forward to provide

for the growing Jewish community. It was

then that a band of women known as the

Ladies Auxiliary (founded in 1916) and led

by Gussie Roth decided a new, modernized

building was needed. They stepped forward

and committed $5,000 from their treasury

toward the new building. Their leadership

led the men on the board to organize a

    fundraising campaign, eventually raising

$34,000, and the Morristown Jewish Center

Beit Yisrael came into existence with the

laying of the cornerstone on March 3, 1929.

Well, as they say, “Everything old is new

again.” Since 1916, the Ladies Auxiliary,

better known now as the Sisterhood, has

been the backbone and the heart of our

beloved Morristown Jewish Center Beit Yis-

rael. Over these past 98 years, the women of

our Sisterhood have been there with funds,

time and effort in support of our building,

our programs, our children and our congre-

gants throughout good times and in diffi-

    cult circumstances.

As we approach the annual event of Sister-

hood Shabbat on Saturday, February 22, let us

celebrate the dedicated leaders (past and pres-

ent) and all of the members of our Sisterhood

for all that they do to sustain and enhance our

lives at the Morristown Jewish Center.

If you come to Shabbat services on Friday

night and enjoy the Oneg or stay for a lavish

    lunch on Saturday—Thank you, Sisterhood.

If you have found those special gifts in

our Gift Shop with the extra personal atten-

    tion you received—Thank you, Sisterhood.

If you have been dazzled and impressed

by our recent renovations and upgrades in

the hallways, Frigand Hall and, especially,

    in our Ballroom—Thank you, Sisterhood.

If you and your children have been en-

tertained, informed and inspired by our full

plate of programming for all ages—Thank

    you, Sisterhood.

May the next 100 years in the lives of

the Morristown Jewish Center benefit from

your hard work, open hearts and vision for

    the future.

Please come out on February 22 for ser-

vices led by our Sisterhood members, to be

part of their day and again to say thank you

    in person.

In praise of our sisters—you are all truly

    Eishet Chayil.

rABBI NESSONPhilosophy in FebruaryThe Life, Times, Philosophy and Theology of Franz Rosenzweig

Join us Wednesday nights in February to explore the work of Franz Rosenzweig, arguably one of the most original and im-

portant thinkers of Jewish philosophy and

theology. He spells out his “New Thinking”

in his magnus opus The Star of Redemp-

tion, an interpretation that has impacted

    modern Jewish and Christian philosophy.

His life story is just as compelling and

includes his near conversion to Christian-

ity, his return to Judaism, the beginnings

of The Star of Redemption being written

on notecards and mailed home from the

Balkan front during World War I. He con-

tinued his writing after he was paralyzed

from ALS. He established The Lehrhaus, in

Berlin, in 1920. This remarkable institu-

tion, where Jewish teachers of high re-

nown lectured on many aspects of Jewish

life and thought, provided German Jews

    with opportunities to follow Rosenzweig

in the quest for a Judaism that spoke to

Kulanu B’Yachad—All of Us Together. The Religious School has taken this year’s theme to heart. For the first time

in many years, students in grades 3 to

7 gather once each month, on a Sunday

morning, to pray as a community. We call

    these opportunities “Tefillah Together,”

    prayer together.

We had several goals in mind when we

created this program. The first was to give

our students the opportunity to experience

prayer with a group of young people. The

other was to add experiential learning out-

side the classroom but still in the syna-

gogue. The last was to try to bring a campy

feel to Religious School, beginning a ritual

of praying as a community of youngsters

    each month.

    In October, students gathered upstairs

    —hesitant, unsure. Our youngest students

    appeared overwhelmed. November showed

improvement with the addition of Cantor

    Yucht’s guitar, a customized transliterated

siddur for those who needed it, and teach-

    ers and madrichim evenly interspersed

    between students. December came with

stories from Rabbi Nesson and increased

    participation.

    During January’s gathering it became

clear that it was easier for students to fol-

low the Hebrew in the siddur, that they

were anticipating when to rise and when

to sit, when to bow, when to be silent. As

students left the sanctuary after January’s

Tefillah Together, one student even asked

to take a transliterated siddur home, “to

practice.” The power of prayer, of collec-

tive learning, of hearing all those voices

together is having an effect on our stu-

    dents.

Hearing almost 80 children praying to-

gether in the sanctuary is uplifting and in-

spiring. They now file into the synagogue

ready to pray, ready to sing, ready to help

each other follow in the siddur. Tefillah To-

gether has not only helped students learn

prayer, but has also helped create a larger

community in our religious school that

spans grade level. It has lifted the spirits

    of our students.

    Tefillah Together. Kulanu B’Yachad.

The weather outside is frightful, but the warmth of the children is easily felt in the classrooms of Shalom Yeladim. This

month we will be learning why it is so cold

in the winter and how the magic number

of 32 degrees will determine if the children

will splash in puddles, throw snowballs at

one another, or simply slip on the ice.

This month includes Groundhog Day, and

here’s hoping that Groundhog Phil doesn’t

see his shadow. Please, sun, stay away just

for this one day! Using flashlights, all of

the children in school will see their shad-

ows and learn that there must be a light

    source for this to happen.

In celebration of Presidents’ Day, we will

learn about George Washington and how

he could not tell a lie. We will talk about

the difference between fact and fiction

and stress the importance of always being

honest just like another special president,

    Honest Abe Lincoln!

This will be the perfect segue into the

kindergarten unit on Washington, D.C. We

will “tour” the White House and learn the

names of its many rooms—some of them

being the names of colors. We will hold

an election and vote for a president of

our class, after following our candidates’

exciting campaigns and listening to their

    promising platforms.

    February is National Children’s Dental

Health Month. On February 10, a dentist

will be visiting with the children to talk

about proper oral hygiene and care for the

    teeth.

Other units being taught to the various

classes this month include the “Human

Body” and “Earth, Wind and Fire.” Our phi-

losophy is learn by doing, and have fun

    doing it!

We look forward to celebrating Shab-

bat every Friday in the Wilner Chapel. We

sing songs, say blessings and love learn-

ing about Judaism. We are currently hav-

uSY has had a fabulously fun start to 2014. After the winter break we all enjoyed catching up with friends at our

Lounge and Game Night. With a relax-

ing start to the evening, the environ-

ment quickly turned competitive when the

large game of Taboo was started. Everyone

laughed and enjoyed our time together,

and it was great to see some new faces.

USY was also invited to join ALP for an

evening to introduce some of our 8th grad-

ers to the amazing learning programs we

provide. It was great to meet everyone and

I look forward to seeing all the 8th grad-

ers at our next event, Iron Chef—USY Edi-

tion on February 9 at 7 pm. Remember, it’s

never too late to join the fun.

Parents: If you are looking for your teen

to stay connected to MJCBY, but aren’t

sure how to get him/her involved, please

contact me. We can work together to get

your child interested and I can have a

    board member reach out directly.

We are so excited about the amazing start we have had to the new year! We all had lots of fun competing in the

    Hungry Games—everyone who came left

with a full stomach and a great apprecia-

tion of friendly competition. Skating at

Mennen Arena was truly a great time for

all who attended as well. With the 2014

Winter Olympics in Sochi, we can’t wait for

our very own Kadima Olympics on Wednes-

day, February 19, followed by our second

Kadima Friday Night Dinner on February

    28. I hope you can join us for our February

    SisterhoodDear Sisterhood Members,

We hope that you each had a chance to take some time off in December and enjoy children and extended family. Of

course, with the start of a new secular year

we have a second opportunity to evaluate

the past year, anticipate the coming year

and resolve to live meaningful and fulfill-

ing lives. May we each have goals that

we are able to achieve, however small or

large, that enrich our lives and the lives of

    those around us.

We are particularly grateful to be work-

ing together as co-presidents of MJCBY

Sisterhood. We are grateful for the support

and encouragement we offer each other

and for the dynamic and committed group

of women we are privileged to work with

on the Sisterhood board. So far, it has

been a remarkable year and one that we

hope you all have had a chance to par-

ticipate in. In early January, our own Beth

Schreiber, along with Donna Gross and

Joy Vaz, organized a very special program

for all ages: challah making and challah

cover decorating. What an exciting after-

noon it was—watching the young children

kneading dough, forming the braids and

gleefully running around the room. The

concentrated energy with which the chal-

    lah cover making participants approached

their creative endeavor was nothing short

    of uplifting.

On February 22, Sisterhood will hold its

annual Sisterhood Shabbat. This is an op-

portunity for all Sisterhood members to

    participate in leading Shabbat services.

We have small and large parts, Hebrew and

English. Stage fright? No worries! Stand-

ing on the bima with your “sisters,” your

stage fright will evaporate. We are Kulanu

B’Yachad—“All of Us Together.” If you

would like a part for Sisterhood Shab-

bat, please contact Ellen Baum at (973)

    442-7610 or Marsha Lewin at (973) 966-

1875. Once again, these two talented and

generous women have agreed to facilitate

Sisterhood Shabbat and we are certainly

    grateful to them for that.

Remember, we are your Sisterhood and

together we will continue the strong tradi-

tion of cultural and social enrichment at

    MJCBY.

Message from Morah Fern & Friends:

We’ve been busy sprucing up over the summer. Wait until you see our newly painted rooms, refinished floors and new carpeting. Everything looks fantastic and so clean for the New Year.

Thank you to all those who joined us for Summer Fun. What a great time we had with Morah Sharon, Ivy and Alisha. Special thanks to Judy Josephson for volunteering her time this summer at camp and Rick Barkauskas for his painting expertise. We would also like to thank J&S Carpets for donating the carpet and area rugs.

Please make sure all of your paperwork is returned before the start of the school year. We are very excited about our new ACTIVIT-E website. We will be posting messages, weekly blurbs, school calendar (with updates and changes) and lots more. Please be sure you are registered.

I am looking forward to a wonderful year with our nurturing and creative staff. Morah Susan is serving as mentor teacher this year, exploring her many years of dedicated service and amazing ideas with our entire staff. In addition, please make sure to stop by and say hi to your teachers and our new staff on Friday, September 3 at 9:45-10:30 am at DROP IN DAY.

When we hear the sound of the Shofar, it is exciting! It reminds us of all the amazing things that come with the New Year. I would like to wish you and your families a healthy and sweet year!

    Dear Families,

Welcome back to a new school year with the new theme... Or Hadash!

Or Hadash means new light, and it is our goal this year to infuse a special light into our school and program.

First, help me welcome Morah Mimi Zukoff to the position of Assistant Director of our School. Mimi is thoughtful, well-regarded, diligent, compassionate and creative - all traits that will serve her and us well. I am excited to work with her.

As a reminder, please make sure your child has been registered on our new ACTIVIT-E web site, so we can be in contact with you throughout the year. You can select the School Information tab and download a multitude of forms, including the Education Handbook.

I am so looking forward to our Family Fun Day Opening Day of school which will be held at Stonybrook Day Camp in Succasunna. Every child should attend with at least one parent (unenrolled siblings and prospective families are welcome). It will be a wonderful way to meet your teachers, share in learning and keep summer camp going for onemore day.

    Shanah Tovah,

    Morah Melissa

Meet Mimi ZukoffOur New Assistant Religious School DirectorMimi Zukoff (Assistant Principal and 6th Grade Teacher) has been working at Morristown Jewish Center – Beit Yisrael since September, 1999. After completing Project Moreh (a religious school teacher training program sponsored by Federation), she began as a 4th grade teacher. In subsequent years, Mrs. Zukoff moved up first to 5th grade and then to 6th grade, where she found her niche! She loves teaching 6th grade for many reasons, mainly that the children are mature enough to study complicated and challenging material while still needing to have fun and play a little. In fact, Mrs. Zukoff has a vast collection of various games and approaches, which she employs to make learning fun. Over the past several years, Mrs. Zukoff has worked with Melissa and Rabbi Nesson to strengthen the Pre B’nai Mitzvah component of the 6th grade curriculum, leading the students to examine and embrace the “Mitzvah” in the bar/bat mitzvah. She assists students in finding or designing meaningful Tikkun Olam projects to start training them in the lifelong charge of fixing the world one little bit at a time. This year, Mrs. Zukoff is stepping up to a newly created Assistant Principal position in which she will assist Melissa in numerous areas including curriculum and staff development, class services, and general administration.

Start your engines. We’re racing toward the checkered flag in

Junior CongregationCheck the religious school hallway for more information.
