Nadine’s News What an honor to be president of such an out-

standing group of ladies!

We were well represented

at the Southwest Regional Conference in Branson

July 17-20 with over 150

Missouri members regis-tered. Our members were

commended highly for

their hard work, their hos-pitality, their helpfulness

and their friendliness. Pat

yourselves on the back for

a job well done! Now that the Regional is behind us, it is time to focus on

the work for Delta State. The theme for this biennium is

“FORWARD MOVING EVER---Through Strategic Plan-

ning.” The goals for this biennium are: 1. Increasing membership

2. Every chapter developing a workable Strategic Action

Plan

3. Retaining members and chapters. I would like to visit as many chapters and coordinating

councils as possible during my term as president. My cal-

endar is already beginning to fill with planned visits. If you would like to schedule a visit, please contact me as soon as

possible so we can get it on the calendar.

If there is ever anything I can do to help you, please feel free to contact me. If I don’t know the answer, we will

work together to find it. Please e-mail or call me anytime.

Again, I am so glad to be a part of this great state organi-

zation! -Nadine Horner

Delta State Members and Chapters Make a Difference Alpha Tau enjoyed a delightful meeting Saturday, April 20, 2013. It

was very special to us because we

celebrated "Hats Off to DKG" in 3 dif-

ferent ways: 1) Several of us wore hats and/or gloves to honor the found-

ing women who accomplished so

much for us, and the skit "Hats Off to DKG" was done with hats describing

the personalities of each of those foun-

ders. 2) We then celebrated the "Annie

Webb Blantons" of today by honoring

our members who are making a differ-

ence in our local communities by giv-ing them updated service pins for their

years in Alpha Tau. Of our 46 mem-

bers, 4 were newcomers with less than

5 years of membership, 5 had earned 5 year service pins, 6 had earned 10 year

pins, 5 had served for 15 years, 3 for

20 years, 8 had given 25 years to Al-

pha Tau, 4 had given 30 years, 2 earned 35 year pins, 2 reserve mem-

bers earned 40 year pins, AND

SEVEN charter members of Alpha Tau earned 45 year service pins! Three of

those could not be at the meeting be-

cause of illness-Ernestine Kinsey,

Neomia Keller, and Sally Shantz, but

four were able to be there, and it was

so much fun to be able to honor those

four dear ladies-Eva Marie Glor, Dr.

Rose Mary Owens, Geneva Lawyer,

and Norma Bishop. 3) We then fin-

ished our "Hats Off to DKG" celebra-

tion by urging each member to honor key women educators who will follow

us by remembering to reach back with

a helping hand to early-career educa-

tors. The question was asked, "For whom are YOU guiding the way?"

It was made all too clear how impor-

tant it is to celebrate and honor achievements and service when we lost

one of our charter members, Norma

Bishop, to pancreatic cancer this month. How glad we were that we had

taken the time to honor her life--as

well as all of our charter members, and

the service of all of the members of Alpha Tau.

What’s T.H.A.T.? Teachers Helping Another Teacher is T.H.A.T. It is a project of Delta State to provide support for our early career educators.

Who are our early career educators? They are educators who have been in the field five years or less. How can we help them?

There are a variety of ways to provide assistance. It can be as simple as an occasional telephone call or a note which offers

encouragement. Being a volunteer in their classrooms is a great way to help. Assisting with a field trip or helping the teacher

prepare the classroom for the start

of the school year are two more

valuable ways to assist teachers.

Chapters could provide gift cards

for teachers to use to purchase

classroom supplies. Sometimes

simply lending a listening ear pro-

vides much encouragement. The

help of DKG members will make a

difference. Beginning teachers will

know that they are not alone and

others have faced similar chal-

lenges. In doing so they will be

encouraged to stay in the teaching

profession and Delta State members

will be a valued part of helping

retain talented educators. We are

asking that each chapter report the

time members spend helping the

early career educator as well as any

monetary donations. Updated

forms will be available soon on the

Delta State website. If you have

questions about T.H.A.T., please

contact Cay Sergent at

[email protected].

Please remember to send a copy of

your chapter yearbooks to Cay as

well.

Congratulations!

Welcome to DKG!

Dear Bev and all the lovely ladies in Missouri,

What a delightful experience to attend your outstanding state organization convention as the Society Representative. The

warm welcome started with a wonderful experience at the lovely “Bed and Breakfast” of Karen Evans after arriving at the

airport in St. Louis Thursday night. Each step along the way throughout the next few days were filled with gracious welcomes

and so many great ladies I had the opportunity to meet. What an honor to be with you!

Your convention theme was perfect: “The Gifts of DKG”, because all of you are so giving in your chapters, state and with

each other. Chapters have a wide variety of projects serving their communities. Your state organization focus on supporting

early-career educators is to be commended. The gifts of friendships abound with members being cooperative and supportive

as they all work well together. I thank you for sharing your “Gifts of DKG” with me.

The Southwest Regional Conference was in great, capable hands with all of you on board to assist as we welcomed members

for fun, friendship and a focus on the Society. Faye Peters, the Steering Committee Chair, and Missouri members spent many

hours to assure members that came to Branson this summer were embraced with your care and by your commitment to provid-

ing the best ever Southwest Regional Conference. Thank you for saying “yes”! Thank you for your professional touch!

Thank you for every contribution made to contribute to making this conference successful. Members loved being with YOU!!

Continue to “Share Our Vision and Strengthen Our Society”.

Love,

BYLAWS AND STANDING RULES By-laws and standing rules are fluid

documents that reflect the guidelines by which a chapter operates. It is the re-sponsibility of each chapter to review its rules every biennium, and whether or

not changes are made, send a copy to the state chairman of the By-laws and Standing Rules Committee, Dr. Sharon

Jones. Copies of rules may be sent electronically to [email protected], or via regu-lar mail to her at P.O. Box 67, Blue

Eye, MO 65611. At the 2013-2015 Delta State Planning Meeting held in Jefferson City in Au-gust, the members of the committee met

to discuss how best to inform chapters of the status of their chapter rules; i.e., whether or not the chapter has submit-ted a copy of its current rules. The

committee members also discussed ef-fective ways to provide helpful informa-tion to the chapters about how to make

changes to, and what should be included in the chapter rules.

Read this section for further informa-

tion in future Deltagrams. Members of the state By-laws and Standing Rules committee are Mary Pettegrew, Betty Nichols, Linda Wall,

and Melody Boring. -Mary Pettegrew

NOMINATIONS The Nominations Committee reorgan-ized at the 2013-15 Delta State Planning

Committee on August 10, 2013. The reorganized committee is Teresa Bege-mann (chairperson), Jana Siefkas, Dar-lene Sokol and Marcia Dawn Powell.

The committee determined that the Delta State Committee Volunteer Form needs to be updated before the next Delta State Convention. At the Delta

State Leadership Conferences, there will be a packet given to the Chapter Presidents in the four different areas. The packet will contain the committee

volunteers for the next biennium and the educators that would like to run for an office of Delta State in 2015. The

Nominations committee will meet within the coming year to update the

Committee Volunteer form. At the

Delta State Convention of 2015, the Nominations committee will present a workshop on serving Delta Kappa Gamma in a leadership role within the

chapter, state, or even international level.

PERSONNEL The Personnel committee met at the

planning meeting. We send our thanks to the MRTA for sharing their building in Jefferson City to our members. The Personnel Committee is composed

of five members. Two members are elected in each odd-numbered year and hold the position for four years; and the immediate Past State President serves

on the committee for the two years im-mediately following her presidency. The Personnel committee evaluates the

work of the compensated personnel yearly and recommends that the execu-tive committee continue their employ-ment if the evaluations indicate to do so.

The evaluations are kept by the Delta State President, the Executive Secretary Treasurer and by the Personnel Com-mittee Chair.

Members of the committee are: Bev Teri, Glenda White, Joan Dix, Faye Pe-ters and Julie Yowell, Chair.

PROFESSIONAL AFFAIRS

The Professional Affairs Committee met at our Delta State Planning meeting with our new president, Nadine Horner

on August 10, 2013 at the MRTA build-ing in Jefferson City. The focus of this committee’s discussion was on the 2014 and 2015 Key Woman Educator Recog-

nition Awards, (formerly known as the Excellence in Education Award) that will be awarded to a nominated member of each chapter at the 2014 state area

conferences and 2015 state convention. Committee members revised the form to reflect up-to-date information, and were asked by Nadine to look at the guide-

lines, and amend them, to include our current theme of supporting early career educators. These forms will be avail-

able on the state website soon. The ab-solute (cont. on p. 6)

RESEARCH Hear ye, hear ye…The Research Com-mittee is moving into the digital age. The committee is looking into a system

that is cost effective while pulling his-

tory, researching and scrapbooking to-gether. Not only will it be cost effective, but it will help keep DKG on the front-line with technology today. Scrapbook-

ing will be on a digital sharing network that will be available on our website as well as shown at State and Regional levels.

Going digital will help us be able to contain history of DKG and our chap-ters; help with updated research; and share scrapbooking in a fun media. Be
