AMessagefromourPresidentFromtheFall2017BacktoSchoolNewsletterTo everything there is a season…andwhen I think about seasons,mymind immediately thinks about the 4standards - summer, winter, fall and spring. Well, truth be told, it really goes to the other “standards”,football,basketball,baseball,etc…andformanyofyou,itprobablydoesthesame.Nevertheless,ifwethinkabout seasons in terms of leadership and our careers in education,wewouldmost likely begin by thinkingaboutourtimeintheclassroom.Andnodoubt,wewouldhavesomefondmemoriesofthosechildrenwehavehadtheopportunitytoserve.However,mostofus,ifwearehonestwitheachotherwouldprobablyadmitwecouldhavedonebetter!Thepointhere?Seasonsdochangeandsodoesourcareerpath.Weareeitheraspiringornewadministrators,wellintoourcareersorclosetoretirement.But,regardlessofour seasonal place in time or where we find ourselves within the seasons themselves personally andprofessionally,wehavearesponsibilitytoplanttheseedsoflearning,andthennurture,cultivate,andsupportthegrowthofthechildrenweareprivilegedtoserve.Forus,it’sbacktoschoolandanewseasonburstingwithfreshopportunities.Let’sworktogetherthroughoutthe year with bold confidence and ensure that when the children we serve reflect on their seasons thebeautifulmemoriesandlearningcreatedforthemarebutforalifetime.Haveagreat2017-2018SchoolYear!Dr.RayMorgigno,President

Wearetrainingthenextgenerationofschooldistrictleaders!As you know beginning in January of 2019, state lawwill require the appointment of allMississippi schoolsuperintendents;infact,inalittlelessthan18months,wecouldpotentiallyseeasignificantnumberofschooldistricts in need of a qualified Superintendent. In the United States,approximately 4.5 million students and/or their parents will report ethical violations by teachers and educationemployees during their K-12 schooling. He is a best-selling authorand internationalspeaker,trainer,andconsultant.Asateacherandschooladministrator,Bobrecognizedtheimportanceofearlylearningsuccessinthedevelopmentofpatternsoflearningsuccesswhichaffectstudentsforlife.InNorthville,MIhedevelopedamodel which decreased the need for special education placement and savedmillions of dollars each year for thedistrict. After founding the Early Learning Foundation in2001, he developed a comprehensive early learning successmodel which includes identifyingessential skills in each of the domains of early childhood, systematically measuringprogresstowardscompetency,andgivingeachchildthetimeandinstructiontodevelopessentialskills.RobertS.McCordDr.RobertS.McCordisanemeritusassociateprofessorintheGreenspunCollegeofUrbanAffairsattheUniversityofNevada,LasVegas.HeholdsaB.S.andM.S.fromtheUniversityofWisconsin,StoutandanEd.D.fromtheUniversityofNevada,LasVegas.Hisresearchinterestsandpublicationsfocusoneducationlaw,educationpolicy,urbaneducation,and the superintendency. Since 2000, Dr. McCord has owned and operated EducationManagementandConsultingServices,LLC(EdMCS)providingresearchsupport,superintendentandseniorstaffsearches,policydevelopmentandanalysisservicestonumerousschooldistricts,SEA’s,&education-relatedbusinesses.Inaddition,he has served since2005 as research professor in residence at the American Association of School Superintendents(AASA)alongwithservingsince1994asamemberoftheSanFrancisco-basedboardofdirectorsofWestEd.MareeSneedMaree Sneed is recognized in the education industry as a lawyer who helps school districts, independent schools,educationalinstitutions,andeducationalcompaniessolvetheirmostcomplexproblems.Forthreedecades,clientshavesoughtMaree'sadviceasaresultofherexperienceworkingintheeducationsystem,herlegalacumen,herpublicpolicywork, andherability tomakeconnectionsbetween theeducationand legal arenas. ThoughtsfromtheExecutiveDirectorSometimesnowbacktoschoolmakesmesad–maybenostalgicisabetterword…notbecauseanotherseasonoflifehascomeandgoneformeandanewgenerationofkindergartnersarebeginningtheireducationaljourney,butbecauseinmycurrentseasonandleadershiprole,Idon’tgettoenjoyalloftheexcitementanewschoolyearbrings.Imissthepreparationandexcitementofnewprograms,newschedules,newbooks,newstaff,andnewopportunities.Imissthesmellofthefreshpaintinthehallwaysandtheshinyfloorsinthegym.Imissthebuseslininguponthefirstdayofschoolandthewide-eyedinnocenceofthechildrenexcitedaboutthestartofanotherschoolyear.ImissthechancestotouchheartsandmindsthroughcontentandteachablemomentsandIevenmissthechallengeseducationcanbringatthatlevelofleadershipandworkingtosolvethosechallengestogether.So,Iamgratefulforthelittlethingsatthistimeofyearthatbringmebacktowhywedowhatwedo.IamgratefulwhenIgointoWal-MartandseetheBacktoSchoolDisplay,whenIseethechildrensmilinganddiggingthroughsuppliesinabaskettofindjusttherightpencils,lunchboxorbackpack.IamgratefulwhenIhearfrommygranddaughterthathernewteacherwantshertobringabagfilledwith(4)specialthingsthatare“allabouther”andIamasfilledwithexcitementasthe2ndgraderatchurchiswhosharesherenthusiasmabouttheawesomereadingnooksherteacherhasbuiltforher.It’spersonalforthem;it’spersonalforme.Weallhavewarmmemoriesfromourschooldayswhetherit’saspecialteacher,coachoradministrator.Whetherit’saboutgettingtobethe“classhelper”thatdayortheteamcaptainonFridaynight.ButdowemakeaconcentratedefforttoensurethatALLofthechildrenwherevertheyareintheirseasonofschoolhavethosewonderfulexperiencestorecall?Ifwedon’tthen,shameonus.It’sourjobtomakesurethateverysinglechildwhowalksthroughourdoors,intoourclassrooms,intoourlunchrooms,ontoourplaygroundsorontoourfieldsenjoythesamekindofcareandlovethatwewouldgivetoourownchildrenorgrandchildren,toourneighbor’schild,theteenagerinourSundaySchoolclass,thedoctor’sbaby,thedisabledchildorthehomelessmother’schildren.Theyarealloursandtheyalldeservetheverybestwecangivethem.Asourseasonscomeandgo,andasourchildren’sseasonsdothesame,letusnotforgetourdutyandresponsibilitytothewholechild;letusnotlosesightwhenthestormcloudsrollin,theraincontinuestofall,orthefundingdriesup;thatwhatevertheseason,aharvestwillsurelyfollow.Letusmakesurethatwecanlookbackandsay,thefruitsofourlaborareevidentintheheart,mindandspiritofeverychildwetouched.Asalways,withadmiration&respectforallyoudo, Lisa
