As always, we are delighted to welcome back performers who have enjoyed working at The Mission in the past and are returning with a selection of popular and engaging plays. As our reputation grows, it is not surprising that new companies are also flocking to our door and during the Summer you will have the chance to enjoy new writing, comedy and music from these first time visitors.

The range and variety of The Mission Theatre’s resident company, Next Stage, goes from strength to strength, with talented actors working every month on exciting, thought-provoking and stimulating productions. In July Next Stage takes on a new challenge by staging a Double Bill of Our Country’s Good and The Recruiting Officer. This is the first time Next Stage has produced a play written before the 20th Century but since it is the one being rehearsed by the convicts in Our Country’s Good I thought the break with tradition was justified. Do try and get along to see both plays and take advantage of the special ticket offer.

In January I had the chance of a link up with Next Stage’s leading patron Sir Alan Ayckbourn. Without Sir Alan’s constant help and encouragement, Next Stage would not have developed to the point where we were able to take on the challenge of opening an independent theatre in Bath. I was delighted to be able to tell him that here at The Mission Theatre we are regularly delivering his vision of engaging, high quality, theatre-in-the-round productions and that more and more people are discovering this intimate venue created in an attractive Grade II listed former chapel. In turn, Sir Alan asked that his best wishes should be conveyed to all who visit, perform in and support The Mission Theatre.

In existence since 1994, Next Stage Youth is one of Bath’s most popular youth theatre companies. Next Stage tutors and actors provide our 60-strong group with training in theatre and performance skills and each year a number of talented members go

on to pursue careers in the theatre. In 2012 the Come You Giants (CYG) bursary was launched to provide grants to members of Next Stage Youth who are seeking help with further professional training.

Next Stage Youth places emphasis on performance as a means to enhance teamwork, self-confidence and a professional grounding in theatre arts. There are no auditions, anyone between 11 and 18 is welcome and Next Stage has a policy of using talented youngsters whenever possible in adult productions.

Novato Theatre Company make their debut performance at The Mission Theatre with their devised piece Awaken. This new and dynamic company is bursting with energy and style, ready to showcase their original ideas in a creative explosion of mythological madness.

Awaken begins by exploring Plato’s concept of the soulmate, drawing upon ancient mythology. Cupid and Psyche are cruelly torn apart by the almighty Jupiter, King of the Gods, who feels threatened by the growing strength of mankind. Psyche must undergo a series of gruelling tasks, set out by Cupid’s mother Venus, in order to prove her love. As the piece unfolds Psyche and Cupid’s relationship is challenged by the complications between the mortal world and the Gods. Cupid and Psyche’s son, half mortal, half God, delves into a world of story books brought to life by his imagination in order to escape the chaos of his feuding parents.

Novato Theatre Company was founded in 2012 after the success of their sister company, Novato Dance. Their performances are entirely devised and explore a range of theatre styles including physical and post-modernism with a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure.

After the sell-out success of Next Stage’s first Taster Theatre in February, the company is delighted to announce: A Cup of Coward. This sparkling summertime entertainment celebrates the life and works of one of the 20th Century’s most charismatic British playwrights: Sir Noël Coward, who has indeed: “a talent to amuse”.

A celebrated actor, singer, composer and playwright, Coward published over 50 plays from his early teens onwards. His crisp and sophisticated scripts contain wit and bon mots aplenty, scintillating dialogue and laconic humour. On offer in A Cup of Coward are acclaimed Next Stage actors performing extracts from two of Coward’s most popular productions: Hay Fever and Private Lives, whilst your MC for the night will provide an overview of The Master’s extraordinary life and talent.

On Golden Pond is the love story of Norman and Ethel Thayer. The tart-tongued retired professor and his long-suffering wife have stayed in their holiday home in Maine each Summer for as long as they can remember. When their divorced, middle-aged daughter comes to visit with her new man and his young son in tow, this Summer seems set to teach Norman a thing or two about love, forgiveness, and the inevitable passing of time.

Adapted into an Oscar-winning film in 1981 starring Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn, Next Stage is proud to present this American classic.

Australia, 1789. The First Fleet from Britain lands in Botany Bay. Whilst the officers in charge of the penal colony hunt and shoot the native kangaroos and aborigines alike, the small-time criminals in their charge are being persuaded by Second Lieutenant Ralph Clark RN to stage a play: The Recruiting Officer.

Celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2013 Timberlake Wertenbaker’s iconic play, Our Country’s Good, tells the story of this first production in Australia, performed thousands of miles from London with only two copies of the text, a cast of convicts and a leading lady about to be hanged.

George Farquhar’s The Recruiting Officer is a classic English Restoration comedy featuring the womanising Captain Plume and his adventures and mis-adventures with Sylvia - a seductive heiress and daughter of a local gentleman. Forbidden by her father to marry the notorious Plume, Sylvia disguises herself as a man and seeks to become one of Plume’s “recruits”. Needless to say, all ends happily and all complications are resolved. Despite its lighthearted approach The Recruiting Officer accurately reflects the realities of eighteenth century recruiting practices and the place of women in a male-dominated society.

Next Stage’s Artistic Director Ann Garner has wanted for many years to replicate the double bill of Our Country’s Good and The Recruiting Officer that she first saw performed in Bath by Max Stafford Clark’s original company in 1988. 25 years on, Ann has teamed up with another Next Stage director, John Matthews, to make her dream a reality. Ann directs Our Country’s Good and John is directing The Recruiting Officer with acclaimed Next Stage actors participating in an ambitious double bill which once again gives Bath audiences the chance, on alternate days, to see Our Country’s Good and The Recruiting Officer as presented by the convict cast of the First Fleet!

Events: Doors normally open 45 minutes before the start of an event. Any pre-ordered or remaining tickets can be collected at this time.

Parking: Avon Street Car Park is opposite the theatre and the Riverside Coach Park is at the end of Corn Street. Car parks on either side of the building are private and not for the use of theatre goers.

Public Transport: Bath Spa train and bus stations are within 3 minutes’ walk.

Disabled Access: The Main Auditorium has full disabled access and facilities.

Bar: Our attractive fully licensed bar and Bistro are located upstairs but cold drinks may be taken down into the Main Auditorium. The bar is open whenever an event takes place and audiences can purchase hot and cold drinks, light meals, home made cakes and filled rolls.
