Dear Friends of the Food Bank,

Thank you for making 2018, our 45th anniversary, our most successful year to date. Your support allowed us to distribute 67 million pounds of food, which represents the equivalent of 56 million meals for our neighbors in need. Our community also continues to be generous with their time; the total number of volunteers exceeded 37,700, the equivalent of the work of 77 full-time employees. Financial supporters of the Food Bank generously provided a record-breaking 12.5 million dollars to help those in our community facing food insecurity.

Our Mobile Food Pantry distributed 1.4 million pounds of food, including more than 450,000 pounds of fresh produce, and we continued to expand our distributions to college campuses. Our food assistance programs for older adults provided food for 29,000 people every month and our Summer Lunch Program provided nutritious lunches to 3,000 children every weekday during the summer.

We continued to help improve the capacity of our 600+ partner agencies by providing cold storage, refrigerated vans and just-in-time deliveries to our agencies. This allows them to store fresh, nutritious food before distribution, aid in efficient food recovery and distribution through our Extra Helpings Program and receive deliveries on the day of distribution to allow larger amounts of fresh and nutritious perishable items to get directly to people in need.

During the year, Food Bank staff traveled to Sacramento and Washington D.C. to advocate for policies that would help those who face food insecurity and joined with food banks across the country to advocate against proposed changes to the CalFresh Program that would increase the need for food assistance.

Los Angeles County faces many challenges, including having an estimated 2 million people who experience the devastating impact of food insecurity. Yet, Los Angeles County is also home to thousands of generous people like you who have made hunger relief a priority, giving those in our community hope for a better and brighter future. Thank you for your support of the Food Bank to help us mobilize resources to fight hunger in our community.

Best regards,

David Bishop Michael Flood Chairman of the Board President and CEO

Together, We Provide for Children in Our Community. The BackPack Program is designed to ensure that children from food-insecure households who rely on school meals have access to healthy, kid-friendly food during the weekend when school meals are not available.

Approximately 24% of our clients are children.

There are more hungry children in Los Angeles County than in any other county in the nation. 1 in 4 children in our community may not know where their next meal is coming from.

Our Children’s Nutrition Programs provide the nutrition that children need to succeed in life. We distribute healthy meals to children at schools and other sites in underserved areas in order to increase their access to healthy food. Adequate nutrition is vital for early development, academic achievement and children’s overall sense of safety and well-being.

“Delta Air Lines is committed to improving the well-being of our communities where we work and live by supporting organizations that are making a significant impact in the lives of vulnerable people, especially children. The Food Bank’s effort to alleviate food insecurity in Los Angeles County is exactly the kind of work Delta is proud to support through volunteering and ongoing financial contributions.”

– Scott Santoro Vice President Los Angeles and West Sales Delta Air Lines

“There is a definite difference when students don’t have access to good nutrition outside of class. It’s harder for them to concentrate and to come to school really ready to learn. The BackPack Program has filled that gap for our children.”

– Fleming Robinson Principal Mayo Elementary School

Approximately 18% of our clients are older adults.

More than half of Los Angeles residents aged 65 years and older do not have enough income to meet their basic needs. Through our Senior Nutrition Programs, the Food Bank delivers healthy food to older adults in our community.

When living on a fixed income, many older adults skip meals to be able to afford housing, health care and other expenses.

Healthy food for our seniors in need helps them live happy, healthier lives.

You Make Our Senior Nutrition Program Possible. The Borstein Family Foundation’s support of the Food Bank began in 2013. Their generosity throughout the years has provided hundreds of thousands of meals for individuals we serve. In 2018, they made a four-year $100,000 commitment to provide food for seniors in our community.

“The Borstein Family Foundation supports organizations in Southern California that enable those in our community to live happier, healthier lives. That is why our family is proud to support an organization that reaches so many individuals in need in our community.”

– Loren Borstein Board of Trustees Borstein Family Foundation

In 2018, an anonymous donor made a transformative $5 million gift to increase the distribution of healthy, shelf-stable items and fresh produce to seniors. This visionary gift has allowed us to create new innovative programs that will increase seniors’ access to nutritious food.

The funding will enable us to expand existing senior programs, launch new delivery models and provide resources and equipment to selected partner agencies. To reach these target groups, we have established new partnerships, as well as expanded existing partnerships, focusing on home-delivered meal providers, congregate meal sites and organizations that serve veterans.

We serve roughly 55,000 low-income older adults on a monthly basis.

Food From The BarIn the 10th year of the Food From The Bar campaign, participating law firms and legal service organizations raised more than $500,000.

Food From The Bar has raised more than $4 million since 2009. The campaign is a friendly competition for legal firms, law schools and legal service organizations to see who can raise the most funds, acquire the most food, and work the most volunteer hours for the Food Bank in an effort to feed the children of Los Angeles County who may go hungry in the summer months.

“I am proud to have been part of the Food From The Bar campaign for more than a decade. We, as lawyers, think of ourselves as problem solvers, and hunger in LA is a problem that we can solve, working together.” – Kathleen McDowell Litigation Partner Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP

In December 2018, some of the world’s most talented and generous chefs and musicians turned out in Los Angeles for Eat, Drink and Support. Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl served savory smoked meats from his newest venture, Backbeat BBQ and played with his friends, Chevy Metal. Chefs Bruce Kalman, Tyler Anderson, Antonia Lofaso, Nick Shipp and Duff Goldman supplied delicious offerings like meatball parmesan sandwiches, pizza, rigatoni, fire-roasted corn, ratatouille, and warm bread pudding à la mode.

Eat, Drink and Support was conceived by Billy Harris, who was also the master of ceremonies at the event, and a group of friends. The event, which took place at the Food Bank, raised $45,000 for our neighbors in need.

“Don Lee Farms is a second and third generation family company, so we understand the importance of family and community. Los Angeles is our extended family, and we are proud to do our part to help our neighbors.”

Providing food for 600+ partner agencies.

Our Partner Agency Network. The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank provides food to 600+ partner agencies throughout LA County, from the top of the Antelope Valley all the way down to Long Beach, and from Santa Monica to Pomona. These soup kitchens, pantries, shelters, community centers, senior centers, churches, schools and other organizations receive food from the Food Bank and then distribute it in their local communities to those in need.

Each year, the Food Bank honors an exceptional agency with the Community Partner Award. Friends In Deed, an interfaith community organization that has been working to serve Pasadena for more than 70 years, was recognized with this award in 2018.

“Without the Food Bank, we wouldn’t be able to provide for as many people, and we wouldn’t be able to offer as many healthy choices.”

– Tim Nistler Pantry Director Friends In Deed

Meeting Hunger Where It Hurts Most. The Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry is on the front lines of hunger relief, distributing directly to clients who do not have access to a partner agency. Our direct distribution programs work to close the hunger gap for food-insecure individuals who live in areas where there isn’t a brick and mortar pantry available.

In 2018, our Mobile Food Pantry program distributed food to 12 sites across Los Angeles County. This program serves many demographics, including working families and the growing population of college students who face food insecurity while going to school.

“After gas, tuition and textbooks, there is not much money left over for healthy eating. The Mobile Food Pantry is a big help.” – Student Citrus College

In April, City National Bank and King’s Hawaiian joined together by supporting and volunteering at our Mobile Food Pantry distribution at the Crenshaw Baptist Church of Torrance.

FeedingLA Tomorrow Legacy Society was founded to recognize donors who provide support through a bequest or planned gift.

Thank you to the 37,700 volunteers who helped us pack, glean and distribute food to those in need.

Thank you to our many donors who contributed a total of $94.8 million in food and product in 2018.

2018 Top Volunteer Groups

Without enthusiastic and generous community members donating their time, we would not be able to fulfill our mission. More than 37,700 volunteers made our work possible in 2018, and while every single one of them is important, there were a few Hunger Heroes who really stood out.

In February 2018, the NBA All-Stars and Legends, including Anthony Davis and NBA Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo, packed food kits for low-income seniors facing food insecurity.

In May, the All Within My Hands Foundation and Metallica fans met up to sort produce and create kits for our Children’s Nutrition Programs.

Throughout the year, members of our Chef’s Circle attend key events to help us raise funds for and awareness about an issue close to their hearts and ours: hunger in LA County. In 2018, some of LA’s top chefs gave generously of their time and talents to make Taste of The Rams, Eat Drink and Support and other events a huge success.

“The two most important things in my life are family and food. I grew up with a love of quality food in my mother’s and grandmother’s kitchens and developed a passion for sharing this love with others. I support the Food Bank and what it stands for because I believe no one in my community should go without reliable access to nutritious meals.” – Steve Samson Chef/Owner Sotto, Rossoblu and Superfine
