U na Nota del Padre Kelly ¡Un feliz y bendecido fin de semana y
celebración del 4 de julio! Que este sea un tiempo para reunirnos con familiares y amigos para reconectar y fortalecer esos lazos que son tan importantes. Nuestra celebración del Día de la Independencia siempre debe recordarnos nuestro derecho nacional de autogobierno, pero también debe recordarnos que la libertad por sí misma no es nada si no nos cuidamos, protegemos y alentamos unos a otros para llegar a ser esa persona que Dios creó. La libertad nunca puede ser una justificación para el egoísmo, sino más bien un medio para perseguir el bien común. ¡Celebrémoslo bien y de manera segura!
Como se anunció el fin de semana pasado, el 1o de julio comenzamos nuevamente a celebrar la misa de 7:00 de la mañana de lunes a sábado, y este fin de semana reinstituimos nuestra hora para el Sacramento de la Reconciliación en su horario normal de 4:00 a 5:00, los sábados por la tarde. El cambio más significativo será el horario de los domingos por la tarde. Los domingos ya no tendremos misa en inglés a las 6:00 p.m. sino que, a esa hora, celebraremos la misa en español. (ya no habrá misa de 7:30 p.m. en español). Esto es para ayudar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas de hispanohablantes cuyo horario de trabajo no les permite asistir a una misa diurna, y también a las familias con niños pequeños que necesitan alistarlos para irse acostarse a buena hora. Puesto que ya tenemos una misa en inglés el sábado por la tarde, esta es una respuesta razonable a una necesidad apremiante.
Una vez más les agradezco su paciencia, oraciones, dedicación y respeto durante el último año y medio, lleno de innumerables desafíos. Verdaderamente la fe nos fortalece para enfrentar las necesidades que se presentan por delante de manera amorosa y compasiva. ¡Que la paz y la buena salud sean suyas siempre!

and celebration! May it be a time to gather with family and friends to re-connect and strengthen the bonds that are so important. Our celebration of Independence Day should always remind us of our national right of self-governance, but it should also remind us that freedom itself is nothing if we fail to care for, protect, and encourage one another to become the person that God created him/her to be. Freedom can never be a justification for selfishness, but rather a means to pursue the common good. Celebrate well and celebrate safely!
As announced last weekend, on July 1st we once again began celebrating 7:00 a.m. morning Mass Monday – Saturday and this weekend brought back our regularly scheduled Reconciliation time of 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The most significant change is seen in our schedule for Sunday evening. We will no longer have Mass in English at 6:00 p.m. on Sundays, but will celebrate Mass in Spanish at 6:00 p.m. (there will be no 7:30 p.m. Mass). This is to assist our Spanish-speaking brothers and sisters whose work schedule does not permit them to attend a daytime Mass and/or families with small children who need to prepare them for a proper bed-time. Since we already have an evening Mass in English on Saturday, this is a reasonable response to a definite need.
Again I thank you for your patience, your prayers, your dedication, and your respectfulness throughout the past year and a half filled with countless challenges. Truly faith strengthens us to face the need before us and to do so with love and compassion. May peace and good health be yours always!

NO MALAS NOTICIASHay muchas veces cuando decimos: “Dime lo que quiero escuchar, y no me confundas con datos”. Y no vemos con buenos ojos a alguien que podría ser lo suficientemente audaz y acabe con nuestras expectativas.El mayor problema con esa actitud no es que nos perdemos la verdad o los hechos, sino que nos perdemos los regalos nuevos y sorprendentes que otros nos pueden dar. Al igual que la gente del pueblo en el relato del Evangelio de hoy, nosotros también a menudo nos negamos a permitir que otros muestren los talentos que pueden ser una buena noticia para nosotros.Las lecturas de hoy piden hospitalidad, fe y discernimiento. La hospitalidad abre las puertas de nuestro corazón y nuestras mentes a los “forasteros” entre nosotros, no importa lo familiar que él o ella puede parecer. La fe nos permite aceptar los dones de los demás, no importa cuán alarmante o “extraños” nos puedan parecer. TODAY’S READINGSFirst Reading — They shall know that a prophet has been among them (Ezekiel 2:2-5). Psalm — Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy (Psalm 123). Second Reading — I am content with weaknesses and hardships for the sake of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Gospel — “Where did this man get all this? Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?” (Mark 6:1-6a).

NO BAD NEWSThere are many times when we say, “Tell me what I want to hear, and don’t confuse me with facts.” And we don’t take kindly to someone who might be bold enough to snuff out our expectations.The biggest problem with such an attitude is not that we miss out on the truth or the facts, but that we miss out on the new and surprising gifts others can give us. Like the townspeople in today’s Gospel story, we too often refuse to allow others to display the talents that can be good news for us.Today’s readings call for hospitality and faith and discernment. Hospitality opens the doors of our hearts and minds to the “stranger” among us, no matter how familiar he or she may seem to be. Faith enables us to accept the gifts of others, no matter how alarming or “strange” they may seem to be. Discernment helps us discover the prophets in our midst, no matter how amazing they may seem to be. Hospitality, faith, and discernment—cultivate these. Then, nobody can bring bad news.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeIn the Sunday Lectionary, the first reading is usually chosen from anywhere in the Hebrew Bible to tie together with the Gospel. Currently, the second reading is from Saint Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians. Often the second reading is not so closely related to the day’s Gospel selection, because those books are read in a more continuous fashion from week to week. But today, all three of the scripture readings go together very well. Ezekiel struggles with the job he is given by the Lord, speaking to a rebellious people. Paul is dealing with a “thorn in his side,” that is, the difficulties of his own personal weakness and foibles, and learning to rely on God’s grace. Mark’s Gospel introduces us to a Jesus who is struggling to be believed and accepted in his native country. In all three passages, the major figures are following the will of God and paying the price of rejection by the community for their efforts.I DON’T GET NO RESPECTYears ago there was a popular comedian named Rodney Dangerfield, and he would riff about his family life or his work and his catchphrase was “I don’t get no respect!” You knew this refrain was coming, and was part of the punch line, so you waited to hear it and usually laughed or groaned with it. The idea of Jesus being disrespected is a much more foreign feeling. It is easy to forget that Jesus was both human and divine. We can easily romanticize his life and ministry and forget his struggles and the difficulty he had being heard, understood, and respected, especially in his own country. Placed in the larger context of Mark’s story, this was very early in Jesus’ ministry, and the message he was proclaiming was not what the people wanted to hear. Jesus was not speaking about the Messiah that the Jews were hoping for. Add that together with the fact that people are often hardest on their own. Somehow “local boy makes good” just didn’t sit well with them, and they didn’t want to have anything to do with Jesus or his message. Jesus was caught off guard by this.A MESSAGE FOR OUR TIMEThere are times when being Catholic, or even being Christian is very countercultural. It used to be you belonged to a parish, and that was your home, based on your geographic boundaries or ethnicity. But now people change parishes depending on pastors, styles of music, or the Mass schedule. In these days of Covid-19, many who stayed away because of social distancing have not yet found their way back. Many never recovered from their disillusionment over the abuse scandals. Others left Catholicism for non-denominational churches, or explored other paths such as Buddhism. Still others consider themselves “spiritual but not religious” or are labeled “nones.” Frequently, families who once sat together every week in church are now scattered all over the spiritual spectrum. In the face of all this, let us pray for the strength of Ezekiel to continue to preach our faith by the lives we live, despite everything in our culture that rebels against religion. May we have the wisdom of Paul to persevere despite our weaknesses and the thorns in our side. And like Jesus, may we always find the faith we need to endure, even when those around us do not.

Puesto en un contexto más amplio en la historia de Marcos, se trata de un momento muy al principio del ministerio de Jesús, y el mensaje que proclamaba no era el que la gente quería escuchar. Jesús no hablaba del Mesías que los judíos esperaban. Juntando todo eso con el hecho de que las personas suelen ser más duras con sus propios conciudadanos. De alguna manera, “el chico del pueblo que hace el bien” no les agradó y no querían tener nada que ver con Jesús ni con su mensaje. A Jesús esto lo tomó por sorpresa.UN MENSAJE PARA NUESTRO TIEMPOHay momentos en los que ser católico o incluso ser cristiano es muy contracultural. Se acostumbraba a pertenecer a una parroquia, y esa era tu casa, según tus límites geográficos o étnicos. Pero ahora, las personas cambian de parroquia dependiendo quién es el párroco, sus estilos de música o los horarios de la Misa. En estos días del covid-19, muchas personas que se mantuvieron alejadas por la distancia física o social todavía no han encontrado su camino de regreso. Muchas otras nunca se recuperaron de la desilusión por los escándalos de abuso sexual. Otras personas dejaron el catolicismo y se fueron a iglesias no confesionales o exploraron otros caminos como el budismo. Otros se consideran “personas espirituales, pero no religiosas” o se etiquetan como “de nadie y de ninguna”. Familias completas que asiduamente se sentaban juntas cada semana en la iglesia ahora están dispersas en una variedad espiritual. Ante todo esto, oremos y pidamos la fortaleza de Ezequiel para seguir proclamando nuestra fe con la vida que llevamos, a pesar de todo lo que en nuestra cultura se rebela contra la religión. Que tengamos la sabiduría de Pablo para perseverar a pesar de nuestras debilidades y las espinas en nuestro costado. Y que, como Jesús, encontremos siempre la fe que necesitamos para resistir, incluso cuando quienes están a nuestro alrededor no lo hagan.
