Sustainment:DLIFLC provides Post Basic Course instruction to students in residence in Monterey or via contract services provided by the institute’s DLI-Washington Office, where a selection of 65 languages can be studied. Support is also provided via online materials such as the GLOSS (Global Language Online Support System) and BLTS (Broadband Language Training System) which provide asynchronous learning opportunities. Rapport is mandatory six to eight hour predeployment program designed for all personnel, while HeadStart2 contains 80-100 hours of materials designed for one leader per platoon. Army service members may receive up to 16 promotion points for completing this program. Additionally, DLIFLC’s website provides geopolitical and cultural information via its products called Cultural Orientation and Countries in Perspective. Service members can receive a certificate of completion for their work via the Institute website at www.dliflc.edu.

“No matter what mission we give our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines they are going to be in an environment with multiple cultures and multiple languages” – Gen. David Perkins, TRADOC

At any given time, some 2,500 service members attend foreign language courses at the Presidio of Monterey. Students are taught by more than 1,650 highly educated instructors, 95% of whom are native speakers of the languages they teach. Of this number 15% of the instructors hold a Ph.D.’s, 54% hold a master’s, and 28% hold bachelor’s degrees. About 66% of the students are under the age of 25. Roughly six percent of the population are officers, most often studying to become specialized Foreign Area Officers. In addition to teaching foreign languages in Monterey, DLIFLC has satellite campuses located at nearly two dozen sites around the nation and abroad.

DLIFLC is the Department of Defense’s premier school for culturally based foreign language education and training, with classroom instruction, mobile training teams, and online materials tailored for students at all levels of required proficiency or performance. The Institute is attended by all four branches of the military service and select individuals sponsored by their agencies.
