Dear friends of Mission Children’s Hospital,

When you think about what’s essential for delivering world-class healthcare, words like “creativity” and “imagination” might not spring immediately to mind. It’s assumed that artists and poets are creative. But scientists and doctors? They’re all logical, left-brained, by-the-numbers types, right? Not so fast. Look at any field of endeavor, and you’ll find the people at the top of their game are those who apply creative, whole-brain approaches to solve complex problems. Even Albert Einstein said, “Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere.”

Of course, “imagination” isn’t just blue-sky daydreaming. It’s about being open to the possibilities of a route that goes off the map. A willingness to color outside the lines. And consider that creativity is the ability to combine or recontextualize ordinary things to make something extraordinary. In that light it’s clear why we at Mission Children’s Hospital value imaginative thinking just as highly as any other professional skills. It’s as indispensable to what we do as board certification.

When it comes to recruiting professionals to serve the unique needs of children – from general pediatrics and surgery to more specialized programs like autism, gastroenterology, and orthopedics – we not only seek out imaginative thinking, we insist on it. It is, to our way of thinking, a key difference between a merely excellent hospital and a truly extraordinary, world-class medical facility.

Dear Friends,Mission Children’s Hospital has concluded another busy and fulfilling year, as we continued to expand services, enhance our quality programs, and educate regional healthcare providers to help the children of Western North Carolina get the specialty healthcare they need close to home. In 2011, we grew in each of our three core areas — inpatient, outpatient, and outreach. Simply put, more and more children in Western North Carolina receive specialty pediatric care from Mission Children’s Hospital every year. As it has been since our inception, growth is based on the needs of children and families in the region, and we are honored to care for them.

In 2011, we added and expanded in several specialty areas:

• Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery

• Endocrinology

• Child Weight Management and Nutrition

• Behavioral Health

• Child Abuse Pediatrics

• Hospital-based Pediatric

• Cardiology

• Hematology and Oncology

Page 9: Mission Children's Annual Report

Mission Children’s Hospital is committed to providing care for all children in many ways (and locations, for that matter) whether they are admitted to the hospital, examined in our award-winning outpatient facility, or cared for within one of our outreach programs. As we look forward to 2012, we’re excited to tell you about our facility improvements that will assure children receive care in a child-friendly and state-of-the-art environment.

These renovations include:- New Pediatric Imaging Center at the Reuter Outpatient Building- Improvement for the inpatient pediatric units

In this report, you will read about our new and growing programs, quality measures, and national benchmarks, but most importantly, you will hear from patients and families whose lives are changed through the care they receive at Mission Children’s Hospital. As a new year begins, please know that your continued generosity and support of Mission Children’s Hospital makes a spectacular difference in the lives of countless children and their families. On their behalf, thank you.

NICU

Each year, Mission Children’s Hospital’s (MCH) Level III-C neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides critical and timely care for hundreds of babies born premature, ill, or in need of surgery. Level III-C, incidentally, indicates Mission’s dedicated neonatologists, nurses, and therapists provide the highest-rated state-designated neonatal care in Western North Carolina, and even offer important education for parents on how to nurture and care for newborns.

Mission’s Level III-C care also includes the constant pursuit of the best tools and technology available to assist in caring for sick newborns. For instance, Nasal CPAP (NCPAP), which stands for nasal continuous positive airway pressure, provides respiratory assistance to support infants with lung disease. Additionally, Mission Children’s Hospital employs a very sophisticated hi-tech transport isolette used by Infant Transport Team members to help transport sick and fragile infants from all other WNC hospitals or remote locations. The Infant Transport Team also utilizes Nitric Oxide, a special type of inhaled gas, that helps dilate respiratory blood vessels for critical babies. These are just a few of the specialized tasks and technologies Mission’s NICU offers your growing family.

The most common diagnoses

in the NICU were:

• Full-term newborns with

additional issues or problems

requiring intensive care

• Premature infants with additional

issues or problems requiring

intensive care

Page 11: Mission Children's Annual Report

In 2011, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit:

Provided care for 639 babies

from every county in Western North Carolina

and 9 by helicopter.

Transported 95 babies to Mission NICU

from community hospitals in the region,

including 86 babies transported via ambulance

Kyrah’s StoryEmergency care when it mattered most

Kirsten Peterson went in for a scheduled ultrasound at 28 weeks, expectingonly to catch a glimpse of her daughter Kyrah’s face. But the nurses foundsomething much more troubling — her baby had duodenal atresia, a malformation of the first part of the small bowel (the duodenum) that blocks stomach contents from entering the intestines. Kirsten and her fiancé Jonathan were referred to Mission Children’s Hospital, where they learned that Kyrah would have to have surgery right after her birth.

On July 1, seven weeks before the baby was due, Kirsten went into early laborwith severe stomach and back pain, and had to have an emergency C-section.Kyrah was immediately airlifted to Mission Children’s Hospital, and four dayslater underwent surgery to repair her duodenum and remove her appendix.

For a month, Kyrah lived at Mission Children’s Hospital as she recovered from her surgery. Her parents made the drive from Morganton every other day andon weekends. “It was scary, but everyone at the hospital was wonderful with it all. They really touched our hearts. If it wasn’t for them, my daughter probably wouldn’t be here.” Six months later, she’s “one of the happiest babies you’ll ever meet,” Kirsten says. “Kyrah has no symptoms, she’s growing just like she should, and she’s a healthy weight. She’s a blessing to us, that’s for sure. Mission took great care of my daughter.”

“It was scary, but everyone at the hospital was wonderful. They really touched our hearts. If not for them, my daughter probably wouldn’t be here.”

Pediatric Orthopedics

New Orthopedics Program Brings Much-Needed Service to the Region

Prior to January 2011, when area children needed specialized pediatric orthopedic care, they had to drive to Greenville, Charlotte, or Winston-Salem. That all changed when Dr. Jennifer Hooker came to Asheville to help start the Mission Children’s Hospital Pediatric Orthopedics Program, a multidisciplinary effort that treats all aspects of pediatric musculoskeletal conditions.

Part of what makes the program necessary and successful is recognizing that children are not simply small adults, Dr. Hooker says. One key difference is that kids are still growing, which can dramatically influence treatment decisions. “Because we can harness children’s natural growth and healing potential,” she says, “we can treat the majority of conditions nonoperatively.”

From the moment local providers learned that comprehensive, world-class pediatric orthopedic care was available locally, business has been brisk. Almost immediately, Dr. Hooker began working through the backlog of kids with chronic medical conditions. “There was a stack of referrals 6 inches high when I arrived.”

“We knew going in that we’d need at least two doctors,” Dr. Hooker says. To help manage the patient load, Dr. Ole Raustol, another pediatric orthopedist, came on board in January 2012. The doctors have overlapping but complementary expertise; while both physicians treat all pediatric orthopedic conditions, Dr. Raustol also has a special interest in pediatric sports medicine.

“What’s unique about this hospital system is its amazing commitment to doing the right thing. It’s really about putting the kids first.”

Page 15: Mission Children's Annual Report

Of course, none of the program’s achievements would be possible without a team of accomplished and committed professionals — nurses, cast techs, radiology techs, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, dietitians, and other pediatric subspecialists.

Dr. Hooker says that, along with knowing the program is addressing an urgent need, she’s impressed and inspired by the Mission approach. “From a financial standpoint, pediatric orthopedics is not a huge boost to the hospital’s bottom line. But what’s unique about this hospital system is that they remain dedicated to their patients’ needs. There is a commitment to doing the right thing and serving the people who have needs — our families, our neighbors, our community.”

“It’s really just about putting the kids first.”

Brody’s StoryWhen her son Brody was born in June 2011, Christy Evans knew something was wrong. He was healthy, but “he was just folded in half,” she says. “His legs looked like they were on backwards.” Brody was born with hip dysplasia and hyperextended knees, a condition that a pediatric orthopedist may see only 10 times in an average career.

Christy and her husband, Ray, were scared that their son would never have a chance to walk, ride a bike, or run — or to have a normal, active childhood.

Dr. Jennifer Hooker, a pediatric ortho-pedist at Mission Children’s Hospital, arrived the next day. “Dr. Hooker was like a ray of sunshine for us. She took one look at Brody and told us he was going to be fine.” Three weeks later, Dr. Hooker began the long process of casting Brody’s legs and using a brace to correct his hip placement. Within four months, Brody was out of the casts and doing well, with no need for surgery.

Page 17: Mission Children's Annual Report

Throughout the entire process, the staff at Mission Children’s Hospital went above and beyond to help Christy and Ray as they cared for Brody and tried to comfort him. Christy says, “We could not have asked for a better staff, better doctors, better nurses — everybody down to the recep-tionists. I have never been treated so kindly.” It was a long journey, but thanks to Mission Children’s Hospital, it had a very happy ending.

“We could not have asked for a better staff, better doctors, better nurses – everybody down to the receptionists.” – Christy Evans

In 2011, Pediatric General Surgery:

Pediatric General Surgery The caring surgeons, physicians, nurses, and specialists in our pediatric surgery program provide a full system of care to help reduce stress and anxiety for parents and children before, during, and after surgery. We perform most pediatric surgical procedures, including minimally invasive techniques where appropriate. All our staff are experts in caring for children and identifying the particular risks, complications, and anxieties that children face when undergoing surgical procedures.

“Child life specialists support children and families through the surgical process.

Rather than simply talking to the child and family, we guide children through a play

preparation program. We use dolls, real medical equipment and reflective language

to help children and families truly understand. Playing through the procedure helps

develop the coping skills needed to alleviate a child’s anxiety before and after surgery.”

- Tara Lynch, Childlife Manager

We performed surgery or another procedure on 40 NICU babies and saw

patients from every Western North Carolina County except Graham.

The two most — common procedures were appendectomy and hernia repair.

Caitlin’s Story

Teach a child to eat and nourish her for a lifetime

It’s not unusual for a mother to encourage — and sometimes cajole — her child to eat. But when Caitlin Ball’s ability to feed herself was compromised, it radically altered that age-old mother-child dynamic. Caitlin’s cerebral palsy makes it challenging for her to swallow properly and adequately nourish herself.

To address Caitlin’s condition, Mission Children’s Hospital Pediatric Gastroenterologists inserted a gastrostomy tube (G-tube), which provides necessary nutrition while she learns how to feed herself. The team members handling Caitlin’s care, including Dr. Michael Bates, Dr. Rose Graham, and Dr. Jennifer Hooker, are “fantastic, every one of them,” says Lauren. “We’ve been going to MCH for two or three years now, and even the receptionist recognizes Caitlin and asks how she’s doing.”

The Feeding Clinic at Mission Children’s Hospital instructs Lauren on how to feed Caitlin. It’s a very slow and gradual process, she says. “The idea is to get her to eat again on her own.”

For eight-year-old Caitlin, having to learn over again — from a baby’s point of view — can be

frustrating. The key is keeping a good perspective, says Lauren. Knowing it’s going to be a long process, she’s buoyed by Caitlin’s optimism. “She’s like a little angel; a happy little girl who loves watching TV and hanging out with her friends and family. We’ll know more as months go on, but so long as Caitlin is wanting to eat, and if I have patience, everything will work out in the end.”

“Everyone at Mission is fantastic. Even the receptionist recognizes Caitlin and asks how she’s doing.”

Family Celebrates Memories and Pets to Help Children at Mission

Cartoons and comic books … puppies and playtime … these are words that bring to mind a child’s laughter and smile. Childhood and cancer are two words no one wants to put together. Deibert family members are cancer survivors and dog lovers who are using their time and treasure to change lives.

Fourteen years ago, Barbara and Irv Deibert of Asheville began the Glad Tithings Foundation with their sons Don and Richard. Through their foundation, the family wanted to help charities in Western North Carolina. Just a few years later, Barbara was diagnosed with cancer. She succumbed to the cancer, but the family recognized that her legacy would continue through the work she began with the Glad Tithings Foundation.

Shortly after Barbara died, Irv learned about the pet therapy program at Mission Children’s Hospital. Irv and his beloved Izzy, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, joined the pet therapy team and were soon visiting children in the hospital and outpatient clinics, bringing smiles to young faces.

Reminders of home and fun distractions are especially meaningful to children with cancer who can spend weeks at a time in the hospital. Often what children miss most about being away from home is the family dog. The therapy dogs are welcome new friends who provide great comfort and fun.

When Irv was approached about a gift from the Glad Tithings Foundation to help with the construction of a new pediatric cancer clinic, he said he would talk to his sons. “Ours is a family foundation, and we make decisions as a family.”

Page 25: Mission Children's Annual Report

The answer was quick and unanimous. Don feels great joy from giving and knew that his mother Barbara’s passion for children would live on every day in the new pediatric cancer clinic. Richard, a father himself and a physician, appreciates the need for a healing space for families. He refers to the definition of philanthropy — the love of humanity — when he talks about the work the Glad Tithings Foundation enables. He believes we can all find a way to help our neighbors in Western North Carolina.

The Glad Tithings Foundation made a gift to fund two pediatric examination rooms: one named in honor of Barbara and the second in honor of the hard-working pet therapy dogs of Paws On A Mission, including their beloved Izzy.

Asthma Management Program

Innovation Turns Asthma Patients Back Into Kids.

Asthma gets in the way of some of the best parts of childhood — playing with friends, participating in sports, enjoying the outdoors — and it can have much more severe consequences if left untreated. The Regional Asthma Disease Management Program seeks to address health disparities in children who suffer from asthma. While this program serves any high-risk child with asthma in the Western North Carolina, the program’s focus is outreach to American Indian, African-American, and Hispanic children in rural areas who may have received inadequate or no intervention for their asthma.

The Regional Asthma Disease Management Program provides asthma care and education to children and their families in their local settings — homes, child care centers, and schools. The program offers clinical asthma assessments, patient education, medication assessments, and assistance in developing personalized Asthma Action Plans to manage symptoms. Additionally, our specialists’ approach includes assessing children’s environments — homes and child care settings — to find ways to prevent asthma symptoms or attacks.

Page 27: Mission Children's Annual Report

Melinda ShulerPrincipal Investigator and Regional Clinical Coordinator of Mission’s Regional Asthma Disease Management Program, was named the 2011 state recipient of the Asthma Champion Award. This award is presented by the state Asthma Program of the North Carolina Division of Public Health and the Asthma Alliance of North Carolina to honor one person in the state for his or her efforts in asthma education, management and prevention.

Families who participate in the program gain skills for addressing asthma as well as access to additional community resources. Participation helps reduce the number of emergency department visits and

hospitalizations that the children experience, as well as days missed in school.

Most importantly, it offers children a second chance for healthier, more active childhoods.

“Asthma care is highly complex. Every child ’s circumstances are different. To be effective, we have to adapt the treatment plan to fit the unique needs of the child both from a medication, as well as an environmental standpoint.” – Melinda Shuler

Community Benefit Feature: ToothbusMission Children’s Hospital Takes Dental Care on the Road

For hundreds of children in Western North Carolina with N.C. Medicaid, N.C. Health Choice or no insurance, receiving appropriate dental care would be impossible without the Mission Children’s Hospital ToothBus Program. The program’s two 40-foot RVs function as traveling dentists’ offices, providing full dental care to children at elementary schools in five major Western North Carolina counties: Avery, Swain, McDowell, Rutherford and Transylvania.

These children, many of whom have received little to no prior dental care, receive a regular dental checkup, cleaning and restorative care as well as a wealth of oral health education in a fun and interactive environment. After the visit, the program sends parents information about the treatment provided and additional educational information about keeping children’s teeth clean and healthy.

Those children who have extensive dental needs or who require surgery are provided for through our Operating Room program. Children with serious dental conditions and/or special needs can be referred to the OR program by their teachers, pediatricians, dentists or any other community member. They receive treatment from Mission Children’s Dental practice at the hospital.

In 2011, the ToothBus and OR Programs conducted 2,051 appointments

with underserved children throughout Western North Carolina, and we

continually work toward identifying and assisting even more children in

our region who need dental care.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Mission Children’s Hospital:My wife and I have four grown children, all now in their 30s and early 40s. What a wonderful journey it has been to see them grow and develop from tiny babies into healthy, productive and contributing adults. To Jan and me, that has been the fulfillment of our lives together – to see our children do so well.

I have also had the privilege of a similar journey with Mission Children’s Hospital. I was here in 1992 with founding medical director Olson Huff, MD, to watch its birth; at the groundbreaking, the Rev. and Mrs. Billy Graham and former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop dedicated this wonderful new service to the children and families of our region.

Over the past 20 years, I have watched and been a part of the development of many new programs to help our region’s children, including mobile dental units, a program to help abused and neglected children, expanded autism services, pediatric cancer services, a wonderful Child Life program and a pet therapy service, to name just a few.

Now under the visionary and creative leadership of current medical director Susan Mims, MD, Mission Children’s Hospital is poised to continue its journey toward state, regional and national recognition and impact. We are providing some remarkable care and leading-edge treatments, and giving our children access to some of the best healthcare services in the Southeast.

And just as families rely on each other, we could not be doing all these great things without the support you provide. Contributions, grants, special events and corporate support are all critical to maintaining what we have and expanding it to meet the growing needs of children in our region. So no matter how you give to Mission Children’s Hospital, whether through financial support, your prayers, sharing at the holidays or advocating for children in need, we are deeply grateful.

Thank you for being part of our homegrown family, and for something Western North Carolina takes great pride in – helping us take care of our own.
