Newsletter Update
2018 – 19 24th September
Dear Parents and Carers,
The first weeks of the new term have flown by and it has been great to see the children
return after the summer break full of energy and enthusiasm for their new topics and up for
the challenges this term has in store.
Thank you to parents for ensuring that children are correctly kitted out, we have been very impressed with how smart the children look. PE kits should be kept available at all times.
Don’t forget to label all items of clothing to avoid losing any items.
I would like to say a big thank you to all the new starters across the school that have
joined us at the beginning of September. They have all settled in well and have made lots
of new friends already. I know that the staff and children will continue to make them feel
welcome.
We take great pleasure in introducing our new
house captains for this year:
Tatton: Ashton Degnen, Izzy Roberts and Kalem
Cooper (Vice).
Jodrell: Darja Kozina, Chloe Wharton and Leo
Walters (Vice).
Delamere: Shekinah Marembo, Trinity Palin and

Year 3: Suzie Faddes for a fantastic power point presentation about rocks.
Year 4: Connor Franklin for his consistently mature and hardworking approach to learning.
Year 5: Eloise Brown for excellent work in English.
Year 6: Trinity Palin for super use of parenthesis and other higher level punctuation.
We have had lots of outdoor time in Little Bears whilst the good
weather was with us. We have been learning ball skills which has
been so much fun! We sing a special song whilst we bounce the
ball, pass the ball around the circle and have been starting to
learn how to throw and catch in pairs.
We have been also having lots of sensory experiences outside, we
have been fishing in the glittery water to see what we can find!
We have really impressed our teachers by learning to write our
names, we now do this every single morning when we come into
Nursery!
EYFS NEWS
We have also gone number mad! Little Bears have been looking at our
number recognition and had lots of fun whilst learning. We have used
our colourful number pebbles to go on our number hunt in the outdoor
play area. We dug up all the numbers to 10 from our indoor sandpit.
Then, we took our learning out to the playground and painted over
Miss Brogan’s number on the floor using our own and had a go at
using chalk to write out own!
In Reception, we have continued to settle into school and make more
friends. We have begun to learn our letters and sounds (phonics). We
have started to look at the ‘s’, ‘a’, ‘t’ and ‘p’ sounds. The children
have practised their letter and number formation by writing in salt.
We also became chefs this week as we made pizzas in maths! We
practised counting out the number of each topping we were putting
on. Then, we had lots of fun counting out malteasers when our
number of the day was 7!
In PE, the children were excited to wear their PE kits for the first time!
We worked in pairs to follow actions and move around the hall in
different ways such as hopping and skipping – and even walked backwards on our hands and feet!
We have continued to impress Mr Foulkes with our speedy changing
for PE. We have begun working on moving around the hall in different
directions – some of them were really tricky but we tried our best!
The Jolly Postman’s journey has taken us to the big, bad witch! We have
started looking into traditional tale characters and we sorted them into
good and bad, giving reasons for our answers. The children got very
engaged linking the characters to different traditional tales and
discussing what they had done that was bad.
Across Year 1 and 2, we have been working on describing the witch
using adjectives and noun phrases. Year 1’s focus has been writing
simple sentences using adjectives, whereas Year 2 have worked on
putting their noun phrases into sentences.
In maths we have continued our work on representing numbers. We
have been doing a lot of practical work on counting and making
numbers using objects such as counters and diennes. We have begun
looking at the place value of each number and thinking if it is a ten or a
unit, the children have done really well with this!
For curriculum in the afternoons we have become artists and created
self portraits of ourselves for a new classroom display. The children
thought carefully about their features including eyes, eye brows, lips,
ears and hair.
PHASE 2 NEWS
The Jolly Postman’s journey took us to Cinderella’s Palace as she was ----------------------
preparing for her wedding to Prince Charming. We have looked at how different people
celebrate weddings and different roles within a wedding e.g. bride, groom, bridesmaid
etc.
In English we have been creating invitations to Cinderella’s wedding. This has prepared us
for our own upcoming Phase 2 wedding which will be taking place next week, for details
see the letter.
Finally for curriculum our focus has been DT. We have looked at where different food
comes from (plant or animal) and sorted foods accordingly. We have also all had chance
to peel, chop and grate a range of different foods which the children really enjoyed and
can now help prepare dinner at home!
PHASE 3 NEWS
In Phase 3, we have been investigating how rocks can be
grouped according to their properties. We looked at
investigating their size, colour and texture. We used a 2p coin to
scratch the rocks to test how hard they were and we also
investigated their permeability.
In English, we have been continuing to read the story ‘Stone
Girl, Bone Girl’ which is a fictional story based on Mary Anning.
We have been using expanded noun phrases and compound
sentence to describe a coastal setting.
In maths, we are continuing with place value as well as starting
our shape, space and measure sessions which take place on a
Monday. This week, we investigated the properties of 2D
shapes including the number of corners, size and lines of
symmetry. Some children began drawing 2D shapes with given
properties.
In English, pupils have continued to work on their imaginative
setting descriptions linked to our book for this unit, Stone Girl,
Bone Girl.
In Science, Year 3 have enjoyed learning more about rocks
and soils, studying different types of rock and taking part in
practical experiments which investigated how soils
absorb water.
Year 4 started to explore Prehistoric Britain by studying timelines
and considering what a range of historical evidence can tell us
about life in the Stone Age.
Year 4 also had their third session of Forest Schools with Mr
Foulkes on Thursday afternoon, and all pupils in Phase 3 ended
their busy school week by taking part in exciting Music,
Computing and Spanish lessons.
It has been a fantastic second week for Phase 4, full of lots of exciting
learning! In English we have continued our work on explorers,
following the journey of David Attenborough. From the Galapagos
islands to the Amazon, our adventure has now taken us to the
Antarctic! We can’t wait to have a go at writing our own
documentary based on the settings we have been exploring.
In Maths, we have continued our work on number and place value
where we have been focusing on number sequences. In shape,
space and measure, children have been following steps from
naming and describing 2D and 3D shapes to finding lines of
symmetry.
After finishing our current topic on shape which has included
identifying shapes by their properties, sorting shapes according to
angles and edges, creating 3D shapes using nets and identifying lines
of symmetry.
We have finished our unit in Geography based on the world map
and have begun to start our new Science unit: Inheritance and
Evolution. We have been looking at photos of fossils to identify what
the creatures may have been, where they may have lived and what
characteristics they may have had. Year 5 even matched fossils to
the correct dinosaurs.
The children have also thoroughly enjoyed their curriculum day,
which takes place on Fridays, where they have had lots of fun
learning how to use the IPads in ICT to make funky iMusic songs,
playing the steel drums and learning Spanish phrases. Muy Bien!
PHASE 4 NEWS
We have been busy planning and writing our own documentary
scripts in the style of David Attenborough. Although we have looked
at a range of places, this week we focused on Antarctica and the
children wrote some fantastic descriptive sentences.
Brierley 2 – Gainsborough 0 On Wednesday 19th September, it was our first match of the Crewe Autumn Football League
against Gainsborough. This was our first fixture in our group which also contains Underwood
West and The Dingle. Played in the middle of 'Storm Ali‘, strong winds were brought to the
pitch and we knew we had to try to get our noses in front if we could, as the 2nd half against
the wind would be difficult. We started well, showing some nice touches and winning our
tackles. We had a few wayward shots from distance and then came close as Ashton Degnen
fizzed a shot just over the bar. We made the breakthrough when Lewis Plant weaved his way
through the Gainsborough defence and then calmly stroked the ball into the corner with his
left foot. We deserved to be 1-0 ahead but a 2nd goal would have put us in a great position
for the 2nd half. We had a couple of half chances from corners, with Leo Jones and Ashton
nearly getting on the end of two corners from Lewis.
In the 2nd half we made a couple of tactical changes, as we knew the wind was against us and we would probably have more defending to do. Ashton slotted in at centre back and
was straight into the action, winning headers and repelling any attack. Either side of him,
Joshua Watling and Harvey Lindsay were both outstanding and kept both wingers quiet. We
still tried to hit Gainsborough on the break and showed some neat play with Noah Jones, Lewis
and Lucas Jones linking up well. Lucas had a half chance but his shot went just wide and
Noah’s strike from the edge of the box didn't quite have the power to beat the keeper. At the
other end, Matthew Thompson made a couple of smart stops before we killed the game off
with a second goal. A long throw from Joshua was flicked on and a Gainsborough defender
stuck out a hand- penalty! Up stepped Ashton who had too much power on the penalty to
give the keeper any chance. Leo and Gracjan came on to bring some fresher legs for the last
few minutes and they along with the rest of the team worked really hard, right to the final whistle to preserve a clean sheet and record a great 2-0 win to start the season.
Squad: Ashton Degnen (c), Matthew Thompson, Lewis Plant, Leo Jones, Harvey Lindsay,
Gracjan Marcinkowski, Joshua Watling, Lucas Jones and Noah Jones.
Well done to all of the boys for a great start in difficult conditions. MOM went to Harvey
Lindsay who won most of his tackles and his distribution was excellent – however, both Lewis
Plant and Ashton Degnen were both outstanding in midfield and it could have gone to either
of them.
Thank you to all of the parents for their support at the fixture- it was nice to see a big crowd and the boys appreciated your support.
