I’d like to move that a motion of condolence be passed and a message of sympathy be sent on the passing of our friend and work colleague, Joe Friedman.
Mr Mayor, Joe worked with Council from 1995 until 2014 as an officer in the Planning branch.
He was instrumental in establishing the Staff Welfare Fund and was a former member of the Council Social Club Committee.
He always shared a huge smile, loved the Titans (his only flaw was that he came from Scone, so also loved the cockroaches).
Mr Mayor, Joe was a popular officer and his retirement since 2014 was way too short. Not only will he be sadly missed by his family, but also by many of his friends within the City of Gold Coast and in particular, Council.
RIP our friend Joe Cr Gates To The McGregor Family On the passing of Dr Graham Sayer RESOLUTION G20.0130.003 moved Cr Gates seconded Cr PC Young That a motion of condolence be passed and that a message of sympathy be forwarded.

I joined with local Councillor Pauline Young for the re-opening of Deodar Park in Burleigh Waters, has a new $290,000 playground, including new shade sails.
We know everybody loves our parks and these projects are about making them even better.

Inaugural Meeting of Music Advisory Group (MAG)
It was a pleasure to be invited by Chair Dean Gould to attend this first meeting.
The Gold Coast’s music sector is set to power up following the formation of a special Music Advisory Group tasked with building a thriving and recognised local music industry.
As we know, the Group forms part of the City’s Music Action Plan which aims to positively impact the music sector on the Gold Coast.
It is fantastic to see the calibre of people we have on board as part of the group to help steer our music industry.
2020 is going to be a golden year for music on the Gold Coast as we start to see the Music Action Plan in full swing and starting the year with international artists such as Queen.
The Group was determined by an independent music industry panel.
The Music Advisory Group consists of the following members:
Mark Duckworth
Matthew Schneider
Kylie Cobb
Graham Ashton

2020 Australia Day Awards Presentation Ceremony
Our annual Australia Day awards recognise excellence in community service, sporting, environmental and cultural endeavours, as well as naming the Gold Coast Citizen of the Year and Gold Coast Young Citizen of the Year.
Each of these citizens has helped make the Gold Coast an even greater place to live.
On behalf of the city, I’d like to thank these local legends for their ongoing commitment to the Gold Coast – their hard work and dedication to our city does not go unnoticed.
Director and research lead at Griffith University Institute for Glycomics, Professor Mark von Itzstein AO FAA FAHMS FRACI, was the recipient of the Gold Coast Citizen of the Year award.
The Institute for Glycomics has become one of the nation’s flagship multidisciplinary biomedical research institutes, providing the city with international recognition and raising the Gold Coast’s profile as a leader in education and research in the field of Glycomics.
Teenager Amelia Anderson was awarded the Young Citizen of the Year for her commitment to the community through extensive volunteer work and fundraising efforts.
The 92.5 Triple M Community Service Award went to Ormeau Progress Association’s President Judy Hendrikx who will celebrate her 40th anniversary in the role this year.

During the day, we had the official Australia Day Pool Party at the Aquatic Centre in Southport.
There was novelty races, a giant inflatable obstacle course, dive board fun, giveaways and a sausage sizzle.
Then in the evening we had our main celebrations at the Broadwater Parklands.
It was great to see everyone enjoying the food vendors, children’s games and beach volleyball on the foreshore.
In support of our local legends at the Rural Volunteer Fire Service, there was a special ‘Hero Zone’ where locals will have the chance to engage with and donate money to the volunteer firefighters.
Wildcare Australia had a pouch decorating activation for rescued joeys that have been affected by the bushfires.
We also raised money for our drought-stricken farmers, with all proceeds going to Rural Aid Australia.

Wet Weather Event
On Saturday, 17 January the City received torrential rainfall which in some parts of the City came close to 300mm being received in a few hours, marking a 1 in 100 year rainfall event.
Following on from the previous Saturday’s assistance to Emergency Services with the tanker rollover on the M1, the City’s Disaster Management Unit was stood up and road closures and maintenance activities put in place across affected areas of the City.
It is comforting to know that City officers are constantly monitoring rain and creek gauges and that the DMU was staffed in the middle of the downpour at 3.30am to prepare for the worst.
The intensity of the downpour moved significant amounts of debris, and City Maintenance crews have had a busy few days clearing up, with some facilities such as the Nerang Velodrome experiencing significant damage.
City Maintenance Crews prioritised repairing beach access ways, then went on to the removal of debris.
City officers quickly inspected critical assets such as bridges, roads and pathways to ensure that no damage has occurred – most of which was only superficial in nature.
The heavy rain and localised flooding also caused varying levels of damage to some of the City’s community centres at Paradise Point, Southport, Studio Village, Labrador, Varsity Lakes and Burleigh Waters.
Again, our maintenance teams responded quickly to assess the damage and worked hard to get all centres back into operation as soon as possible.
Our community centre staff have also been in contact with the organisations and community groups impacted to make alternative arrangements and minimise any inconvenience while repairs are carried out and some temporary closures occur.
