MYTH: PANDORA’S BOX

• When the world was still quite young, Jupiter, the king of the gods became afraid of the humans.

• He asked Vulcan, god of craft and skill, to make a woman out of clay.

• The gods gave her the gifts of beauty, kindness, and grace.

• Jupiter brought her to life and named her Pandora.

• Jupiter gave a simple, kind man named Epimetheus Pandora as his bride.

• As a wedding present, Jupiter gave them a box that they could not open.

• Pandora became increasingly curious about what was in the box.

• Jupiter knew that the curiosity would overcome Pandora.

• Pandora finally opened the box and let out flying, stinging creatures named Disease, Hate, Anger, Old Age, and many more.

• By the time she closed the box, only Hope remained inside.

• Jupiter knew that now he and the other gods had nothing to fear from the humans because they would be caught up in the troubles of humanity.
