Applications SIGS Newsby Dick Marchiafava

Again I must report the conversion of one ofour Apple SIGS from the status of a group thatse rves App le use rs exc lus i ve l y, t o t ha t agroup that is not machine specific, in orderto serve a broader base of computer users.

I am speaking of the Geneology SIG. They haveexpanded the scope of the i r operat ions toinclude al l computer users. Therefore, theywil l cease operat ion as a Mini 'app' les SIG,and shall operate as the Minnesota ComputerGeneology Group. They are an independentgroup with their own by-laws.

The MMGG may still list their meeting on ourcalendar page, and we will have a Mini'app'lesmember who is the liaison person between thet w o g r o u p s . M r . B i l l D e C o u r s e y, f o r m e rGeneology SIG Coordinator, has agreed to bethe l ia ison. Please cal l h im for informat ionregarding MMGG. Thanks for your leadershipeffor ts in the past , B i l l !

Mini'app'les members, interested in Geneology, are welcome to the MMGG.

At the September SIG meeting about 15 personssaw two Apple co-processors demonstrated. These devices speed up the Apple's internaloperations by using a faster internal clock. This allows in memory processing to be veryfast, about 3.5 times faster.

These devices are different in that one boardcontains its own memory, and the other boarddoes not, but uses the Apple memory. Thedevices differ in some small ways, but themajor di fferences are the memory, and theresul tant d i fference in pr ice. The uni t wi thmemory is about twice the cost of the other.

MacDOM #3The Third Mini'app'les Macintosh DOM

by Steven E_. Baker

This, the third MacDOM, features severalinteresting programs and files.

CATALOGGER - The program is a Microsoft BASICprogram for maintaining a disk based Catalogof Diskettes which contain names and othercharacteristics of all files on the cataloggeddiskettes. It is strongly recommended thatyou read the MacWrite document "CataloggerDoc" before you try running the program. Thisdocument explains which system files arerequired and how to run the program. BEWARNED.

SQUIG6 - A cute illustrated story by TomEdwards, our beloved MacSIG Recordist. Read"About Squigg" to learn the background behindthe story.

NEW FONTS - Several new fonts to feed your Macand dress up your letters and pictures.

START UP - An application that allows you toswitch diskettes as the start up disk (TopDisk on DeskTop) without rebooting the systemor opening a file on the lower disk.

MacART FOLDER - A nice owl drawing by RamsevSmith.

MacREFERENCE SHEET - Our first reference aidfor the Macintosh.

This feature is hoped to become a regular partof our MacDOM. If you discover a slick trickusing the Mac or any popular program, simplydocument it and give it to the MacDOM Editor(me) and I'll try to incorporate it in thenext appropriate MacReference Sheet. S p e e D e m o n i s a c o - p r o c e s s o r s p e e d u p

board that uses a 65C02 microprocessoroperating at 3.6 Mhz clock rate to takeover processing from the Apple 6502which operates at a 1.02 Mhz c lock

rate. Th is resu l ts in a s ign ificant increasein the speed of internal operations.

This board will work with any Apple ][, ][+,or He. It is slot independent, and will workin any s lot except s lot 0, (s lot 3 on / /e) .It accesses the Apple memory, including memoryexpansion boards.

T h e f o l l o w i n g i s a r u n d o w n o f t h echaracter ist ics of the SpeeDemon. I t workswith any Apple software, Applesoft, Pro-Dos,Pascal and 80 Column cards. It starts on powerup, but can be disengaged by an ESCAPE fromthe keyboard to bypass i t . SpeeDemon ist ransparent , requi res no pre-boot , and wi l lwork with CORVUS hard disks. The SpeeDemonslows down when accessing peripherals and thegame port. There is a built-in self test.

In my experience the SpeeDemon delivers whati t says i t wi l l . I t has an honest 3.5 t imesspeed up for in memory operations. Since oursoftware operations include a mix of tasks tob e d o n e t h e r e m a y n o t b e t h a t k i n d o fadvantage in overall operation. The operationof the device can be startling, or it can bequite subtle, but i t works to decrease totaltime of operation. I use it with BPI GeneralLedger, which is a clunk as far as speed isconcerned, and cut processing time by abouthalf. I have seen graphing programs run onSpeeDemon equipped systems, and the generationand display of the graphs or charts is notablyf a s t e r.

This device should really shine in doing sortson databases, and is great with spreadsheets.Overall, a boon for business applications.

Yes, you may play games with SpeeDemon inoperation, but the games may run fast! Thiscould result in the game being un-playable. Onthe other hand, we might think of it as a newa n d g r e a t e r l e v e l o f c h a l l e n g e i n g a m eplaying! And of course, with slow games it isa real help.

I was once accused of writing a review thatwas so glowing, that it was assumed that I was"throwing roses" (not being objective). So, isall rosy in the garden? No, there have beenproblems experienced.

In one instance, when running in the fast modethe Apple bypassed a c lock card before i tcould respond. In discussion with the owner ofthat system, it appears the problem is one ofhow and where the clock card is being used, and can be solved by moving the clock card. Also, there is a jumper on the SpeeDemon boardwhich can be removed that will slow down 1/0access to slots 4 & 5. As I take it, a clockcard o r any per iphera l dev ice requ i r ing anormal operating speed should work if locatedin one of those slots.

The only software problem has been in tryingt o r u n D B M a s t e r v e r s i o n 4 . 0 w h i c h h a ssomething to do with some timing changes ons o m e t r a c k s t h a t a r e p a r t o f t h e c o p yprotection. There is no problem running DBMaster ver. 3, or ver. 4+.

On boot, an ESCAPE in the first 2 seconds^after power-on takes the SpeeDemon off linand the boot proceeds at normal speed. On m^.personal system I have to do two or more

Subscription UoesOr, Where's my magazine?

Also, Lock Smith 5.0 Addendumby Dick Marchiafava

i n the September issue o f th is newsletter, I reported the change in the distribution of Lock Smith 5.0 since OmegaM i c r o w a r e fi l e d f o r b a n k r u p t c y. L o c kSmith is now distributed by Alpha LogicBusiness Systems:

4119 North Union Rd.,Woodstock,I l l inois, 60098

I wrote them a letter explaining that I hadordered and paid for a subscript ion to theLock Smith newsletter ($12.00), and asked themif they would honor my order. I received aprompt reply from Alpha Logic explaining thatthey would be unable to honor the subscriptionorders taken by Omega because of the largenumber of subscriptions on record. Instead, they offered to give me a subscription to thenewslet ter for the firs t year a t a d iscountprice ($6.00). I took the offer and felt thatI had been able to salvage something fromtha t .

A t t h e s a m e t i m e I o r d e r e d a d i s k e t t econtaining the Lock Smith parameters that havebeen publ ished to date. At $8.00 this disksaves a lot of typing and de-bugging whenentering parameter changes.

More problems with subscriptions:

At the September board meeting someone told metha t So fTa lk had ceased pub l i ca t i on . "Ohgreat!" I said. "I just sent them a check forrenewal yesterday!" I figured that was thelast I would hear about that $18.00.

Well, this week (Oct. 3rd) I got my check backby the good graces of the Post Office. Theenvelope has all sorts of offical red rubberstamp marking on it, which add up getting mycheck back because SofTalk's business replypermit was not renewed! Wheew!

That is better than I faired at the hands ofSmall Business Computers. Many months ago Isent them a subscription order for two years.Over a period of months I received about threeissues, which included apologies for delaysand an extension on the subscription. Therehas been no th ing s i nce t hen . We l l , I amreconciled to the fact that that is all I will"Ter get from them.

% f l a s t t a l e o f m a g a z i n e w o e s i n v o l v e sPeelings II, a publication that was very heavyon product reviews and comparisons. A sample

copy showed up (who do I have to thank forthat?), and i t was well regarded. I orderedPeelings for two year's, and as a promotionfor new subscribers, I could take my choice ofone year's back issues! What a deal! I couldget three years of Peelings for the cost oftwo, and the reviews and ratings on the backissues were not out of date yet.

Soon I received the back issues as promised. Idevoured them. This is the stuff ! Just l ikeConsumer Reports for Apple stuff! Grrreat!!

An absence of Peelings II in my mail box sincethen caused me to phone their customer servicenumber in New Mexico* I got a recording whichinvited me to leave a message, which I did.No call back, so I called again. A nice personat Southwestern Bell informed me "that numberis disconnected".. .•

Once the catalog is in memory itcan be manipulated with the find and replacefunction to generate a numbered file with thenames of the fi les that are to be pr inted. This directory is then saved to disk and eachfi le is loaded and pr in ted wi th in the WPLloop. The nice part of WPL is the ability to do someof the more tedious tasks automatical ly (ormore conveniently). I sometimes wind up tryingto save a file on the text file disk only toget a disk full message. I then have to finda disk, initialize it and then save my file onit. I wrote a WPL program to calculate ther e m a i n i n g s e c t o r s o n a d i s k .
