This grading and classification of accommodation facilities is done in accordance with the developed and approved Botswana Bureau of Standards specifications, which are briefly described under Grading Standards on this issue.

The results of graded accommodation establishments stand as confirmation that Botswana offers travellers accommodation options of quality and repute. The results further indicate a general improvement on the level of service quality offered by our facilities since the last grading exercise, with more facilities using the mentorship programme offered by Botswana Tourism Organisation to improve on their facilities further.

Some facilities do not appear in this publication due to various factors such as on-going refurbishments and/or upgrading, or pending re-assessment.

This accommodation guide is both essential and useful to all visitors, local or international. The results of graded facilities are also found on our website, www.botswanatourism.co.bw, where there is an opportunity to view all graded establishments on an interactive Map of Botswana. In order to assist the industry to improve further, kindly give us feedback by completing the Questionnaire/Feedback form posted on the website.

Botswana StarGrading System

Introduction

The grading system serves as a useful tool in indicating to travel agents, tour operators and tourists the general quality levels of accommodation facilities in an area as a basis for deciding which facilities to select before tourists start a journey to any particular destination. The system also provides a framework to industry investors in designing their facilities to attract the desired market groups. Basically, the role of grading is to protect the consumer and for the accommodation establishment to benchmark their performance against set standards.

The Botswana Star Grading System is used to differentiate the various quality levels of accommodation establishments, it provides judgements on the amenities, facilities and services of particular accommodation in a way that enables travellers to choose the quality of accommodation they want. The system is mandatory for all types of enterprises. The system applies objectivity obtained from the Grading standards and subjectivity obtained from the Grading Criteria. It is the combination of these two documentations that evaluate whether the establishment is fit for purpose as intended, thus ensuring an accommodation establishment qualifies for a Star Grading having achieved an acceptable average score.The guiding principles for the establishment of the Botswana Star Grading System are :

• A marketing and quality assurance tool based on international recognised ratings.• Aids accommodation establishments to benchmark their performance against set Standards.• Serves as a pledge to commitment to quality, standards and service.• Allows for consumer confidence and choice. Gradingstandards

FACILITIES TO BE GRADED

All tourist enterprises licensed under the Tourism Act of 2009 shall be graded in accordance with the provisions of the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) Act, 2009. These include all facilities throughout the country such as hotels, guesthouses, lodges and self catering establishments. Facilities therefore have to meet minimum licensing requirements.The grading system is compulsory and it is conducted bi-annually. The system consists of a rating from 1 to a 5 star facility.

• One Star facility offers fair to good (acceptable/modest) quality in the overall standard of furnishings, service and guest care.• Two Star facility offers good quality in the overall standard of furnishings, service and guest care.• Three Star offers very good quality in the overall standard of furnishings, service and guest care.• Four Star offers superior (excellent) comfort and quality with a high standard of furnishings, service and guest care.• Five Star facility offers an exceptional quality and luxurious accommodation with highest standard of furnishings, flawless service and meticulous guest care.• Grade Pending includes facilities which may have no award, new facilities, or those whose certificates have expired and are due for re-grading.

GRADING ASSESSORS

Botswana Tourism Organisation has employed a team of trained grading assessors who have undergone internationally recognized training in the principles and etiquette of grading. Refresher courses are conducted intermittently. The grading assessors are Joyce Bose Morontshe, Richard Mafila Malesu, Tshepho F. Mmokele, Kegomoditswe Onyana Modikwe, Ferdinand Sebinyane, Masego Moakofhi, Thatayaone Mmapatsi, Messiah Matolela, Tshoganetso Carl-Ponoesele, Keotshepile Mphusu and Thabang Segaetsho. QUALITY ASSURANCE COMMITTEE

The recommendation of the Grading team is ratified by the QualityAssurance Committee. The committee is appointed in terms of the provisions of the Botswana Tourism Organisation Act of 2009 for a period of two years, eligible for re-appointment. The committee has the power to suspend, revoke, cancel, and refuse to issue or renew grading certificates.

All members of the committee possess special expertise in the field of tourism. The current members of the committee are as follows: Dr. Susan Keitumetse (Chairperson of the Committee and also Member of the Botswana Tourism Board); Mr. Godfrey M. Kupe (Member of the Botswana Tourism Board); Ms. Morongoe Ntloedibe-Disele (Tourism Expert); Mr. Lawrence Peloewetse (Senior Lecturer - Hospitality and Tourism, Gaborone Technical College); Mr. O. Cedric Lopang (Manager, Engineering Standards, Botswana Bureau of Standards); Mr. Ted Soutter (Hospitality and Tourism Association of Botswana); Ms. Myra T. Sekgororoane (Chief Executive Officer, Botswana Tourism Organisation).

GRADING STANDARDS

The current Grading Standard formulated by the Botswana Bureau of Standards consists of the following parts, under the general title Hotel and Related Establishments;

BOS 50-1: 2009 PART 1: FULLY SERVICED HOTELS an accommodation establishment that provides breakfast, lunch, dinner and personal service, for the convenience of the guests.

BOS 50-2: 2009 PART 2: SELECTED SERVICE HOTELSan accommodation establishment that provides breakfast, multipurpose public facilities and selected personal services.

BOS 50-1: 2009 PART 4: BED AND BREAKFAST an accommodation establishment,operating from a private property, that provides breakfast, that has an option with regard to the provision of lunch and dinner and of which the public areas can be shared by the host and the guests.

BOS 50-1: 2009 PART 3: GAME LODGES AND CAMPS an accommodation establishment with fully serviced or self catering facilities situated within or close to a game reserve, national park, or wildlife management area, or heritage/historical site with outdoor activities.

BOS 50-1: 2009 PART 6: SELF CATERING ESTABLISHMENTSan accommodation establishment that provides the facilities and equipment necessary for guests to prepare their own meals.

BOS 50-1: 2009 PART 5: COMMERCIAL GUESTHOUSEan accommodation establishment, operating from a private property, that provides breakfast, that has an option with regard to the provision of lunch and dinner and of which the public areas are for the exclusive use of the guests.

These standards outline the criteria by which the establishments are to be assigned different grades and class/categories. The standards are reviewed after every five years through a Botswana Bureau of Standards established Technical Committee which consists mainly of industry members.

Gaborone is the capital City of Botswana and the main attraction of this region. It is often described as Africa’s fastest growing city. it is a vibrant and colourful city, which lies in the flat vallley betwen Kgale and Oodi hills, on the Notwane River in the south eastern corner of Botswana, 15km from the South African border at Tlokweng.

Once proudly referred to as “Africa’s fastest growing city,” Botswana’s capital, Gaborone, has been – since its inception – continually expanding, to the point that now the sprawling

urban centre of some 300 000 residents has become nearly unrecognizable from the tiny, dusty administrative town it was at the country’s independence in 1966.

From the end of the nineteenth century, until 1963, tiny ‘Gaberones’ Village, as the town was then called, consisted of only a small settlement on the railway line and a small administrative centre in the area now called ‘The Village.’ The land between both settlements was Crown land, but was used by the people of the neighbouring village of Tlokweng as a cattle grazing area.

Britain’s Bechuanaland protectorate (established in 1885) had its main administrative centre in Mafeking (now Mafikeng), in South Africa, just over the current Ramatlabama Border. As plans developed for the country’s independence, it was clear it would need an administrative town within its political boundaries. Bechuanaland was the only territory in the world whose administrative centre lay outside its boundaries.

Nine possible sites were suggested: Mahalapye, Shashe, Francistown, Serowe, Artesia, Lobatse, Gaborone, Maun and a point within the Tuli Block. Gaborone was chosen because of its strategic location, its proximity to the to the railway line and Pretoria, its already established administrative offices, its accessibility to most of the major tribes, its non-association with any particular tribe, and most importantly, its closeness to a major water source.

The city was named after Kgosi Gaborone, leader of the Batlokwa people, who migrated from their ancestral homelands in the Magaliesberg Mountains and in 1881 settled in the Tlokweng area (then called Moshaweng). Gaborone literally means ‘it does not fit badly’ or ‘it is not unbecoming.”Once plans for the city had been drawn up, technical experts from several European countries were brought in to assist with the

planning and building of the town; and architects, artisans, supervisors and labourers were brought in from surrounding areas in Botswana, and from Southern Rhodesia.

In mid-1963, construction on the Gaborone Dam began, while work on the town itself commenced in early 1964.

In eighteen months, the new capital emerged from the African bush. By the time it was completed – incidentally nearly on time – it boasted National Assembly buildings, Government office blocks, a power station, a hospital, schools, radio station, an airfield, a telephone exchange, police stations, a post office, banks, shops, a church, a hotel, a brewery, a stadium grandstand, a dam, and more than one thousand houses.

Indeed the basic infrastructure was in place for Independence Day on 30thSeptember 1966, when Bechuanaland became the eleventh British territory in Africa to become independent.

Since then the city has grown into a modern, bustling government, commercial and industrial centre, now incorporating the neighbouring villages of Tlokweng and Mogoditshane, and with housing estates, industrial estates and financial centres radiating from its centre. Gaborone gained city status in 1986.

Twenty-first century Gaborone now boasts four, large American-style malls, replete with cinema complexes, a host of hotels, guest houses and restaurants, an international airport, a cultural centre, discos and nightclubs, a national museum and art gallery, as well as two golf courses and other sports facilities.

What makes Gaborone so unique, however, is that the visitor can enjoy all the familiar modern conveniences of home, but can gain entry into rural Africa, or wildlife areas, within minutes – having then the best of both possible worlds.

Kasane is the administrative centre of the Chobe District and the northern entrance to the Chobe National Park. Not too long ago Kasane was a remote and forgettable small village. However, its strategic location along the main tourist routes (meeting point of four countries - Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia) has led to rapid expansion in recent years. Six kilometres east of Kasane is tiny Kazungula, which serves as the landing for the Kazungula Ferry between Botswana and Zambia.

Situated in the northeast, Kasane is a bustling little town offering trouble-free access to the Chobe National Park. As there are no boundary fences between the park and the village, game such as elephant and hippo can frequently be seen wandering down the road and through the Kasane campsites.

As one of the oldest towns in Botswana and site of southern Africa’s first gold rush, Francistown, home to 92,500 people, is a typical frontier town, strategically placed as the gateway to the north, with all the main roads to Zimbabwe, and Kazungula passing through it. It manages to maintain its character despite being Botswana’s second-largest urban centre and “Capital of the North”.

One of Botswana’s oldest towns, Francistown was the centre of southern Africa’s first gold rush. It came to prominence through European prospectors’ discovery and mining of gold in the

region in the mid 19th century, first at Tatitown (about 50 kilometres from Francistown), and later at Francistown itself (at Monarch Mine, recently revived).

Gold had been mined by Africans living in the region for generations before. Indeed the wealth and prosperity which the region’s gold deposits have brought stretches as far back as the 12th to 14th centuries.The city was named after the British prospector and miner Daniel Francis, who acquired prospecting licenses in 1869, eventually becoming director of the Tati Concessions Company. Francis and other prospectors often used ancient gold shafts as guiding points for their prospecting, or they simply carried on the mining which had been started in those shafts generations ago. The city is still surrounded by old, abandoned mines.

The original town was founded as a settlement near Monarch mine in 1897, consisting of only one main street lined with bustling saloons and supply stores running parallel to the railway line, which was established by British entrepreneur Cecil Rhodes as a vital link between South Africa and Britain’s northern colonies. Situated 436 kilometres north of Gaborone, Francistown is the country’s second largest city, and an industrial and transport hub, with a railway line leading north to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The main road northwest of Francistown gives passage to Maun and the Okavango Delta, Kasane and Chobe National Park, Livingstone, Zambia and Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

Francistown is currently under-going an economic boom, mostly due to the recent resuscitation of gold mining; this has given new life to the property and transport sectors, with the accompanying infrastructural additions and developments.

Over the years, Francistown (population approximately 115000) has undergone continual expansion and modernisation, to the point that much of its original dusty frontier town atmosphere has disappeared. Modern malls, shops, hotels, restaurants, housing developments and industrial complexes now dominate the city, with some old, colonial buildings still to be seen in the city centre. Yet colourful, distinctively African local markets dot the city, and pleasant parks give it a user-friendly feeling. A lively nightclub scene showcases good local music and dance.

Modumela Lodge is a timeshare game conservancy resort situated 68km north of Francistown. We are situated on a fully fenced property of 1800 hectares. Goo- Moremi GorgeThe Goo- Moremi Gorge is within The Moremi- Mannonye conservation area which lies at the foot of the Tswapong Hills 4 km’s from Goo-Moremi village and 67 km east of Palapye. Visitors to the conservation area can appreciate The Goo- Moremi Gorge situated deep within the hills which is the source of three permanent waterfalls. The first two are smaller, but fan out into large waterholes, whilst the uppermost falls is a full ten-metres high, giving rise to arresting scenes of clear water cascading over rocky outcrops, then collecting in a deeply hidden, lushly vegetated, fern-fringed lagoon. The Gorge is a designated National Monument under the custodianship of National Museum, Monuments and Art Gallery. The adjacent Goo- Moremi Village has been given the opportunity to benefit through The Moremi Mannonye Conservation Trust which is being assisted to develop the area by the Botswana Tourism Organisation. Dumatau Camp, Linyanti

DumaTau means ‘roar of the lion’ yet it is its massive elephant concentrations and outstanding wildlife in general for which it is renowned. Located close to the source of the Savute Channel in the vast Linyanti concession in northern Botswana, this and other waterways lure a plethora of wildlife and birds particularly in the dry winter months.

DumaTau is a ten-roomed tented camp (including one family room) overlooking a large hippo-filled lagoon. The tents are spacious, under thatch with canvas walls, en-suite bathroom facilities and an outside shower. There is a dining room, pub, lounge, swimming pool and a special guest bathroom with a fantastic view.

Wildlife viewing is the primary activity here, either on day and night game drives or while on foot and on the water (levels permitting). There are also a number of platforms and hides from which to view and photograph animals and birds.

Kings Pool Camp

Kings Pool Camp is located in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, a vast private concession in the northern part of Botswana, on the western boundary of Chobe National Park. The accommodation is luxurious and the wildlife spectacular.

The area is famed for its tremendous elephant herds during the dry season. Nine well-appointed tents each have a large bedroom area, lounge, private plunge pool and ‘sala’. The spacious en-suite bathrooms comprise double showers, twin hand-basins and an outdoor shower. Raised walkways allow animals to wander freely through the camp to and from the Linyanti River and the Kings Pool Lagoon. Lagoon Camp

Under majestic African ebony and marula trees, this well known camp straddles the banks of the Kwando River. Located in the exclusive 232 000 hectare (550 000 acre) Kwando concession, Lagoon comprises 8 expansive custom designed tents each with views over the vast Kwando/ Linyanti wetlands. Lebala Camp

Hidden in the Southern portion of the extensive Kwando wilderness of 232 000 ha. (550 000 acres) is Lebala Camp. Kwando Lebala Camp comprises 16 beds in 8 luxuriously spacious tents, on Zimbabwe teak decks. Each tent is surrounded by spectacular shade cloth walls, with a variety of curtains and shades so you can decide on how much light you let in or not. Sliding doors and a spacious bedroom area, bathroom including a Victorian claw bathtub, double basins, outside double showers, separate toilet and fans. Lebala is the Tswana word for wide-open plains, and each tent has extensive views over expansive tracts of African plains and wetlands, that comprise part of the Kwando-Linyanti flood plain system. This system is an intricate labyrinth of waterways, reed beds, islands, floodplains, bush, scrub and trees. To those in the know - somewhat Okavango like but something different too.

Savuti Bush Camp, Linyanti

Savuti Bush camp is located on the Savute Channel, which for many years was dry, wide-open ribbon of grassland snaking through the adjoining woodland. In 2008, the waters returned, and Savuti Bush Camp now has front-row seats to view the abundant game that has congregated and adapted in its wake. The site of the camp is about 17 kilometres “downstream” from the Zibadianja Lagoon – the source of the Channel. This intimate camp’s en-suite accommodation is in seven large Meru-style walk-in tents that are raised off the ground and face onto the Savute Channel. From the thatched dining area and pub, a plunge pool and large viewing area with fire pit extend outwards on raised wooden decks towards the new waters that flow past the camp.

Activities on offer are day and night game drives, guided walks and, depending on the water levels, canoeing. Several elevated hides can also be visited.

Located on the banks of the slow-drifting Thamalakane River, Riley’s is surrounded by its own sprawling landscaped gardens and is an excellent venue for both the tourist and the businessman. Chitabe Lediba is located on the other side of the same island as its sister, Chitabe Camp. En-suite bathrooms complement the outdoor shower with a view. There are two family tents with adjoining bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms. Duba Plains Camp

In the furthermost, remote reaches of the Okavango Delta lies Duba Plains, an unobtrusive, intimate camp surrounded by expansive seasonally flooded plains. One of the Delta’s most remote camps, Duba Pains is situated on a tree-filled island in a private 30 000-hectare concession known as the Kwedi Reserve, an area famed for lion prides and buffalo herds.

Accommodation is made up of six roomy tents with an en-suite bathroom, an outside shower, and a veranda overlooking the floodplain. The thatch-roofed lounge, dining room and bar areas are raised on platforms along with a swimming pool, all providing a beautiful view.

A variety of activities include day and night game drives, often tracking the buffalo herd around the concession. Mokoro trips are also possible in times of good floods - usually only between May and September.

Situated on the remote island of Xaxaba, shaded by a canopy of indigenous trees and Ilala Palms, the camp overlooks a surrounding lagoon fed by the tranquil waterways of the Delta. The area offers prolific birdlife and mammal game viewing by boat and on foot. Also included in your stay is a spectacular game-viewing helicopter flight, the open sides of the helicopter allowing you to take the most fantastic photographs.

Accommodation is everything you would expect of a luxury safari experience. Situated on a small island in the beautiful Jao Flats area of the concession, Jacana offers remote seclusion. Accommodation is in five Meru-style tents, each raised on a wooden deck with a view. The en-suite bathroom is enclosed but roofless allowing views of the African skies. The main dining area is on an elevated wooden deck between two enormous sycamore fig trees, and surrounded by dense wild date palms, Downstairs there is a cosy pub and lounge with large viewing deck, and open area to sit around the fire. Behind this is another thatched relaxation area with hammocks.

Meals are sometimes enjoyed outdoors in a traditional African boma. Jacana Camp is a true water camp, offering mokoro safaris and game drives all year round, as well as night drives when the floodwaters have receded – generally between October and April.

Kwara Camp

Kwara camp (8 en-suite tents) is situated on the edge of the permanent waters of the world renowned Okavango Delta in Botswana, and shares a common boundary with Moremi Game Reserve. Due to the specific location of the camp, Kwara is able to offer, power boating, mokoro (dug out canoe) trips, walks and game drives – all year round. Kwara also offers fishing for 10 months of the year. In addition Kwara is in a large private concession enabling the game drives to operate both off road and at night. The ability to operate off road and at night is critical in order to see the up to 30% of interesting mammal species that are mainly active at night.

These include leopard, lion, wild dog, hyena and smaller predators. The presence of permanent water ensures year round game viewing. The permanent water ensures that mokoro trips (dugout canoes) can take place in shallow water throughout the year. Kwara is one of the few camps able to make this claim and is a great all round camp

Little Kwara Camp

Little Mombo is an extension of and shares the same island as the larger Mombo Camp, matching its high standards. Little Mombo has only three rooms, but larger groups can also book out some of the rooms in the main camp. Little Mombo also has its own dining room, kitchen, lounge and plunge pool. Little Vumbura Camp

Little Vumbura is a small camp hidden on a pretty island surrounded by the floodplains and deep, clear channels for which the Okavango is famed. Mokoro, boating and game drives take advantage of the plethora of both habitat and wildlife.

It is a beautiful six-roomed tented camp (including one family room) shaded by the canopy of an ancient Okavango forest. Each tent is large and roomy and has en-suite facilities. A plunge pool and reading area overlook the floodplains and a star deck leads off the dining area.

Being on an island water-based activities are a focus with mokoros trips under the guidance of experienced polers and swamp boat cruises along the permanent channels. Game drives in open Land Rovers allow guests to get close to animals in the savannah areas. Walking give the opportunity to enjoy Africa from a different perspective. Game viewing is consistently good all year round.

Mombo Camp

Mombo Camp, on the northern tip of Chief’s Island within the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, is built under large shady trees and overlooks an open floodplain more often than not alive with wildlife. This area boasts enormous concentrations of plains game and large predators - lions in particular - providing what is arguably the best big game viewing in Botswana.

Accommodation comprises nine spacious tents raised up to two metres off the ground, with breathtaking views over the plains; the sala, long veranda and lounge area all take advantage of such vistas. Bathrooms are en-suite, with indoor and outdoor showers. The main living and dining area is under thatch, there is a boma for delicious dinners under the stars and a plunge pool to relax in on a hot day.

Sanctuary Chief’s Camp is located on Chief’s Island, one of the many islands created by the seasonal floodwaters of the Okavango with vast number of animals who congregate for a great game viewing experience. Seba Camp

Seba Camp, set in an ancient riverine forest, offers secluded accommodation overlooking a perennial lagoon. It has give well-appointed and spacious elevated tents, each with en-suite bathroom and private deck. Seba Camp is family friendly, complete with family villa with two inter leading en-suite bedrooms, a built-in “tree-house” and a kids’ swimming pool and sandpit. The dining and bar areas are set on a raised Salinga deck with spectacular views. The camp is names after Seba, one of the elephants historically released from nearby Abu Camp. A number of elephants that were released back in to the wild have formed their own herd. The interaction between these and the wild herds in the area provides rich fodder for research teams from Bristol University in the UK. Guests can observe the researchers at work, often in close proximity to the elephant herds.

Tubu Tree is a small camp built on the western side of the Jao Concession’s isolated Hunda Island. Owing to its locale and easy access to diverse habitats, Tubu Tree ensures varied and spectacular game viewing. The camp is built in traditional style with five intimate tents on raised wooden platforms, taking in the marvelous scenery of the surrounding floodplain. Each tent has a private front deck, en-suite bathroom facilities and an outdoor shower. Vumbura Plains is a luxury camp situated in a private concession in the extreme north of the Delta. The concession, which is leased from the neighbouring community, includes a wide variety of habitats, diverse wildlife and an enormous traversing area of 60 000 hectares (130 000 acres).

The camp comprises two separate seven-roomed satellite camps (including two family rooms), each with its own raised dining, lounge and bar area tucked beneath a canopy of cool, shady, indigenous trees and with a magnificent vista across the floodplains. BY AIR Air Botswana, Botswana’s national and only airline, provides international flights between Gaborone and Johannesburg, Gaborone and Harare, Maun and Johannesburg, Kasane and Johannesburg and Francistown and Johannesburg. Domestic flights run between Gaborone and Francistown, Maun and Kasane, and the airline has recently re-introduced its Maun to Kasane flight (three times per week). BY ROADBotswana is accessible by tarred road from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia. Vehicles are driven on the left hand side of the road. A valid international driver’s license, along with vehicle registration documents, are required to drive in Botswana, and drivers should always carry them.

Most major roads in Botswana are tarred and driving conditions are generally good. The main roads to established areas are regularly graded. Four-wheel drive is required when travelling in the national parks and reserves, as well as in remote areas.

GETTING AROUND IN TOWNSTaxis are normally a convenient way to get around in towns and are reasonably priced. They are easily identified in designated stations or can be contacted by telephone. Taxis to Gaborone are also available from Sir Seretse Khama International Airport.

VISASCitizens of most European and Common-wealth countries do not require a visa for entry into Botswana.

Visitors should check with Botswana embassies or consulates, or their travel agents, before departure.

It is vital for visitors to carry a valid passport and sufficient funds to facilitate their stay. note: For countries with whom Botswana has no diplomatic representation, visa information and processing is available through British Embassies and High Commissions.

LUGGAGE RESTRICTIONSIt is advisable to adhere to the luggage restrictions for both scheduled international, domestic and charter flights: 20kgs (44lbs) on domestic flights, 12kgs (26lbs) on light aircraft (including Okavango Delta charter flights), and 20kgs (44lbs) on international flights.

VACCINATIONSIf you are travelling to Botswana from areas infected with Yellow Fever, you must have a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. Otherwise, no other immunisations are required. In summer, lightweight, light-coloured cottons are preferable. Garments of neutral colours that blend with the bush and forest are advisable for safaris and game viewing. Avoid synthetic materials and black clothing, as they increase perspiration and discomfort. Bring a lightweight jacket and/or jersey for unexpected temperature changes or rain.In winter, wear trousers, long-sleeved shirts / blouses and jerseys. From May – August, night temperatures can fall below zero degrees celsius, so warm jerseys and jackets are vital, especially on morning and evening game drives. Closed, comfortable walking shoes or gym shoes are a must in all seasons.Special attention should be given to protection from the sun. Bring a sunhat, good quality sunscreen, sun lotion and polarised sunglasses. Wide brimmed hats are preferable to baseball caps.

The Botswana currency is the Pula (meaning ‘rain’ in Setswana). It is divided into 100 thebe (meaning ‘shield’ in Setswana).

Travellers’ cheques and foreign currency may be changed at banks, bureaux de change, and authorised hotels.

The US dollar, Euros, British Pound and the South African Rand are the most easily convertible currencies.

Automatic teller machines accept foreign visa cards, but are mostly found in larger towns and cities. Cultural sites and community art and craft outlets usually only accept cash.

The importation of firearms that do not have the manufacturer’s serial number or other number by which they can be identified, stamped or engraved on a metal part of the weapon is totally prohibited.

It should also be noted that police permits for firearms are issued on a limited quota basis, and there can be a considerable delay in obtaining a permit, particularly on first importation. It is advisable for intending importers to make applications well in advance of dispatch, so that unnecessary inconvenience and expenses can be avoided.

Visitors to Botswana have the opportunity to purchase diamond jewellery from authorised dealers. A strict certification system is in place to inform the buyer of the origin of the diamond, and the stated value and quality is verified.

Botswana is one of the healthiest countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with good primary health care facilities available throughout the country. However, the following health precautions are advised.

DIAMOND PURCHASE

TRAVEL INSURANCEIt is essential for visitors to remote areas of Botswana to have a comprehensive medical insurance policy, to provide coverage for the treatment of serious illnesses/accidents, and if required, medical evacuation. Personal effects insurance is also advisable.

Check that your insurance policy will be accepted by service providers in Botswana. Ensure that you are treated by licensed medical personnel to enable you to provide your insurance company with appropriate documentation and receipts.

Reasonably priced medical services are available at government clinics and hospitals throughout the country. Private medical practitioners are available in the cities and major towns, such as Gaborone, Francistown and Maun.

Gaborone Private Hospital is the largest private hospital in Botswana. The hospital requires medical coverage, or cash payment in advance where medical coverage is not available.

DRINKING WATER Tap water throughout the country is safe to drink. Bottled mineral water is readily available in most shops and supermarkets, and at camps and lodges.

Tourists travelling by road are advised to carry sufficient water at all times.

HEALTH

HIV/AIDSVisitors are advised to take the necessary precautions against HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

MALARIAMalaria, including cerebral malaria, is common in northern Botswana, in the Okavango and Chobe areas, particularly during and immediately following the rainy season, from November to April.

As the strains of malaria, and the drugs used to combat them, frequently change, and as certain strains can become drug resistant, it is best to seek medical advice before your departure and take any medication prescribed. Pregnant or very young children are not advised to travel to malarial areas. Other precautions are: to wear long sleeves, socks, closed shoes, and generally keep the body covered, to sleep with a mosquito net and to use mosquito coils and repellent.

SUN AND HEAT-RELATED PROBLEMSAlways take preventive measures that include wearing a wide-brimmed sunhat and sunglasses, liberally applying sunscreen every three or four hours, regularly taking rehydration mixes, drinking plenty of water and fruit juices (at least three litres of liquid daily), avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, and avoiding excessive amounts of alcohol, which causes dehydration.

All major towns in Botswana, including Maun and Kasane, have shopping centres and supermarkets, and all basic commodities can easily be purchased. Many regional chain stores operate in Botswana. In addition, there are 24-hour convenience shops at most fuel service stations.

There is an increasing range of local arts and crafts on sale in Gaborone, Maun and Kasane and other tourist areas; they include Botswana’s renowned world-class baskets, woodcarvings, jewellery, pottery, tapestries, fabrics and clothing, glassware, and San crafts.

VALUE ADDED TAxTo claim 10% VAT refund for total value of goods purchased, the amount spent should be more than P5000. In such cases, the following is required: a tax invoice stating VAT paid, your passport number and your bank account details.

It is always advisable to keep a copy of the VAT form as a record for any follow-up on the transaction.

VAT claims usually can be made at all major border posts and airports.

SHOPPING

The self-drive camper driving the open roads in Botswana should always drive at a reasonable speed, and avoid over-taking, except when absolutely necessary.
