Wired for Imprudence
Having a lot on your mind impairs decision making and can tend to result in the simplest, but not necessarily most lucrative, option being selected or course of action taken.
Seeking instant gratification can undermine long-term planning and savings.
Overlooking how you might feel in a different situation can result in unnecessary purchases, such as when shopping for food on an empty stomach.
Mindless behaviour can amplify a poor financial decision as it becomes a recurring event.

“After winning the RSA Design Directions “Design for Debate” brief in 2005 with the ‘Praystation', I spent four months at NCR in Dundee on a placement within the User Centered Design department as a Junior Product Designer. During this time I had the opportunity to do tremendously exciting design work that was a huge leap forward from my studies. I spent time designing blue-sky prototypes for a trade fair in the US and usability testing the latest series of products with cardboard mock-ups. My UCD colleagues were very welcoming and there was a definite sense of ‘team' amongst them all. I was able to develop a number of new skills with their help and guidance.
I am now Head of UX Design Delivery at a Digital Agency in Berkshire, specialising in Service Design for government digital projects.”

“As a winner of the NCR sponsored brief at the RSA 'Design Directions' student design awards in 2006, I was awarded an internship at NCR based out of their design and usability centre in Dundee. This three month long paid internship commenced in September 2006 and not only kick-started my career after graduating, but has ultimately helped shape my career to date.
NCR traditionally took on industrial design interns from the RSA student awards, however they saw the need to bring me in as a graphic design graduate to work on branding/graphics to help bring some of their ATM products to life through visual communication. I was given the chance to work on a wide range of projects such as screen graphics, advertising and branding as well as way-finding systems and product environment signage.
The biggest impact the internship had on me is the fact it totally altered my preconceptions of the path my career could take after completing a graphic design degree. 99% of my industry exposure during university was with design agencies and I was led to believe this was the best career option post-graduation. However, working in-house at NCR gave me a comparable experience to working at design agencies, one that I ultimately chose to pursue. In the decade since my time at NCR I have worked almost exclusively in-house at a variety of companies and currently lead the marketing and communications team at a successful firm of accountants.
I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to work with such a talented team from various specialisms who all helped to guide me through the projects I was tasked with.”

“There are many defining moments in your career, and for me the internship with NCR is one of those. Naively on winning the internship with NCR I was a little sceptical to what the job would offer as the company and industry wasn’t something that I had considered or assumed would be at all interesting. However, the six months spent with the world class design team at NCR quashed all my preconceptions and opened my eyes to the possibilities and importance of a collaborative and research led approach to design and development. The support and encouragement from everyone I met during my time with NCR, unquestionably had a lasting impact on me and improved not only my skills but confidence as a designer. I have a debt of gratitude to Charlie and the team and owe many of my achievements to date to my time spent with the them in Dundee.”

“With regards to the Internship at NCR awarded through the RSA, it was absolutely invaluable in introducing me to a diverse and multi-disciplined UX team, it gave myself confidence in applying my design thinking and further improving my visual presentation skills to the future of vending brief and several live projects at the time. As well as this it also helped me shadow and learn off others, discussing career routes and options for specialising as a designer further down the line.
Had a great time in Dundee mainly because yourself and the team were so welcoming.
The internship helped me hone my career direction, I still work in retail design, having always kept shopper marketing, retail activation and brand experience at the core of what I do.”

“In 2013 I entered the RSA Student Design Challenge whilst studying at Northumbria University. I was lucky enough to have my design shortlisted which meant I had the opportunity to travel to London to present my work to professionals in various design sectors.
At first this was a very daunting experience but once I got started with my presentation the passion for my work shone through and ultimately I was chosen as the winner of my specific brief and granted a paid internship with NCR in Dundee, Scotland.
The team up in Scotland made me feel very welcome which was great, especially as I was living so far from home and this allowed me to settle in pretty quick. I thoroughly enjoyed working on live projects, collaborating with numerous different people on the team and the weekly reviews allowed me to constantly improve my work as time went on.
At the end of my three month internship, I presented my project work to the team in Dundee as well as members of the team over in the United States via conference call which was great.
To this day I still take great pride in the work that I produced whilst at NCR in such a short space of time and working in a sector that was unfamiliar to me, something that I couldn’t have done without the help of my fellow colleagues.
The experiences I took from my placement I have applied to my current career and I am now coming up to the end of my third year as an Automotive Design Engineer at Jaguar Land Rover.”

“My time at NCR provided me with invaluable experience of working within an in-house design team. Being part of such a multidisciplinary team really helped develop my skills as a designer and taught me new and alternative ways to approach problem solving. The working environment and helpful attitude of the employees there allowed me to draw on expertise from multiple backgrounds, whether it was technical engineering, UX/UI research or design for accessibility. Many of the skills learned at NCR I have built on in the last two years as I continue my career in design. The competition itself was also a great experience to be part of as it gives you the opportunity to present to a range of experienced design professionals. Overall a fantastic experience designing within a multinational business and working with a great group of people! And the Christmas night out is great!”
