    The Foundation Skills

    Trance / Focus

    What is trance?

Trance in its modern meaning comes from an earlier meaning of: "a dazed, half-conscious or

insensible condition or state of fear", via the Old French word transe, meaning "fear of evil" and

from the Latin word transremeaning "to cross" or "pass over".

Typically trance can be described as an altered state of awareness in which the conscious, critical

factor in the brain is disconnected and the unlimited power of the unconscious is allowed to come

    forth.

    How does trance occur?

Trance occurs when, through focus, a subjects attention is absorbed and therefore the critical factor is pre-

occupied, leaving the unconscious free to accept any suggestion to be implanted as a thought.

What are the different trance states?

There have been controversies regarding the different trance states and levels of trance. This came as a

result of the frequencies that occur within the brain when trance is induced. The states, waves and

    frequencies are as follow:

Beta: The state of being focused, alert, or engaged in any form of activity are related to beta wavesand they

have a frequency of 1430 Hz.

Alpha: Alpha wavesoccur when a person is relaxed, but alert, having a frequency of 813 Hz. During thisstate, a person is awake but resting

Theta: Theta waveshave a frequency of 48 Hz and they occur mainly during the early stages of sleep, or

when the brain is emotionally stressed.

Delta: Delta wavesare associated with deep sleep. Their frequencies range from 0.54 Hz and are knownfor triggering the release of growth hormone, which provides healing. Hence the reason why sleep is

so important during the healing process.

Going in and out of Trance

To induce a trance state in oneself, one merely has to focus the attention on something that is normally out

of the range of focus and perception.

    For example:

Focussing on the feeling in the left earlobe and paying attention to the pulse one feels in the earlobe as well

as the heat that is generated whilst the blood flows there and while focussing there you might begin notice

the relaxation that fills your body and as that relaxation begins to double now it fills the body even more.

Recalling previous trance states also puts the mind in a receptive state for trance induction. The reason for

this is that due to your mind recalling the previous trance state and remembering what it was like, the body

begins to mimic the previous state and thus starts going into trance.

To deepen the trance one merely needs to take the trance already induced by this time and multiply it and

    experience it physically.

    For Example:

Take the relaxation and double it internally. Increasing the relaxation and having your mind drift with this

relaxation into a profound state of bliss.

Coming out of a trance is just the opposite effect. Begin to pay more attention to the sounds around you in

the room you are sitting in. Begin to notice the chair / carpet / object you are sitting on and begin to become

more aware of the alertness filling your body, feeling more awake and more alert and absolutely fantastic as

this occurs. Then count from 1 up to 5 and mentally know that when you reach 5 you will be awake and alert.

    Intent / Purpose

    Definition of Purpose

Purpose is a misunderstood notion for most people, when we speak about purpose we are talking about the

undercurrent of your nature. Here purpose can be seen as the manifestation of what the ancients referred to

as spirit which is the essential portion of all the elemental parts of your psychology. It is indeed purpose that

    animates life.

    How to recognize your purpose

The key to purpose is found in the heart of desire. You may think that you want money or you want a new

partner but the thing we are all really after is what lies behind this superficial intent.

We want money for example because we want security

We may want a new relationship not because we want another person in your life, but because you may

believe that having a new relationship will bring give you love or perhaps adventure.

Purpose is found only by the alignment of these underlying needs that are driving your character.

How to go about living your purpose?

As you begin to explore the undercurrent of all your desires, you begin to see the pattern of the souls make

    up.

Define what your life would need to be like for you to meet all these needs._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Defining your own Purpose

We have already covered the importance of living your purpose and having your purpose aligned with your

goals in life, but how does one go about setting those goals to fit with your purpose? How can we pre-

    program the mind for success?

To start off, a very important aspect that gets neglected is the fact that speaking in the positive pre-programs

the mind for not only positivity towards your outcome, but also multiplies the effect your attitude has on the

    outcome.

    For Example:

If you are manifesting a desire for improvement in your love life, it would be wrong to phrase it as: I dont

want to be alone anymore. This would be phrasing in the negative or what is also termed as the away from

mentality. Instead, phrase it in the positive or the towards mentality such as: I am successful with

    relationships.

Another thing to keep mind is to always be specific. If you state that you are successful in relationships

which relationships? Romantic, business, familyAlso it is a good idea to attach a specific, realistic time

frame to the goal. So a well set out goal would have the following characteristics:

Oxygen not only supplies us with energy, but the more oxygen we have in our blood, the more toxins get

removed. So breathing correctly not only gives you more energy, but cleanses your body as well.

    Practical Chi-Kung Techniques

Taoist meditation known as the microcosmic orbit

This is the classic Taoist meditation method for refining, raising, and circulating internal energy via the

'orbit' formed by the 'Governing Channel' from perineum up to head and the Conception Channel from head

back down to perineum. Activating the Microcosmic Orbit is a key step that leads to more advanced

practices. Taoists believe that microcosmic orbit meditation fills the reservoirs of the Governing and

Conception channels with energy, which is then distributed to all the major organ-energy meridians, thereby

energizing the internal organs. It draws abundant energy up from the sacrum into the brain, thereby

enhancing cerebral circulation of blood and stimulating secretions of vital neurochemicals. It is also the first

stage for cultivating the 'spiritual embryo' or 'golden elixir' of immortality, a process that begins in the lower

abdomen and culminates in the mid-brain. This is probably the best of all Taoist methods for cultivating

health and longevity while also 'opening the three passes' to higher spiritual awareness.

Taoists often refer things in symbolic languages. 'Opening the Three Passes' is another name for this

meditation method and refers to the three critical junctions which pave the way for energy to travel up from

the sacrum through the Governing Channel along the spine into the head.

    Method:

The first step is to still the body, calm the mind, and regulate the breath. With this settled mind, sit alone in a

quiet room, senses shut and eyelids lowered. Turn your attention within, and inwardly visualize a pocket of

energy in the umbilical region; within it is a point of golden light, clear and bright, immaculately pure. Focus

attention on the navel until you feel the 'pocket of energy' glowing in the umbilical region. The breath

through your nose will naturally become light and subtle, going out and in evenly and finely, continuously

and quietly, gradually becoming slighter and subtler. When the feeling is stable and the energy there is full, use your mind to guide energy down to the perineum and back up through the aperture in the coccyx.

Steadily visualize this true energy as being like a small snake gradually passing through the nine apertures

up to where the ribs meet the spine, then going through this pass and right on up to the Jade Pillohe coccyx.

When you feel the energy has gone through this pass, visualize this true energy rising, the back of the brain.

Then imagine your true spirit in the Nirvana Chamber in the center of the brain, taking in the energy. When

this true energy goes through the Jade Pillow, press the tongue against the palate. The head should move

forward and tilt slightly upwards to help it. When you feel this true energy penetrating the Nirvana Chamber,

this may feel hot or swollen. This means the pass has been cleared and the energy has reached the Nirvana

    Center.

Next, focus attention on the Celestial Eye between the eyebrows and draw energy forwards from the

midbrain and out through the point between the brows. This may cause a tingling or throbbing sensation

there. Then the center of the brows will throb - this means the Celestial Eye is about to open. Then move the

spirit into the center of the brows and draw the true energy through the Celestial Eye. If you see the eighteen

thousand pores and three hundred and sixty joints of the whole body explode open all at once, each joint

parting three-tenths of an inch, this is evidence of the opening of the Celestial Eye.

This is what is meant when it is said that when one pass opens all the passes open, and when one opening is

cleared all the openings are cleared.

You may wish to stay and work with this point for a few minutes, before letting energy sink down through

the palate and tongue into the throat to the heart. This may feel as though there is cool water going down the

Multi-storeyed Tower of the windpipe. Do not swallow; let it go down by itself, bathing the bronchial tubes.

Then the vital energy will bathe the internal organs and then return to the genitals. This is what is called

    return to the root.

From the heart, draw it down through the Middle Elixir Field in the solar plexus, past the navel, and down

into the Ocean of Energy reservoir in the Lower Elixir Field, where energy gathers, mixes, and is reserved for

internal circulation. Then begin another cycle up through the coccyx to the mid-spine behind the heart andup past the Jade Pillow into the brain.

Breathe naturally with your abdomen, and don't worry whether energy moves up or down on inhalation or

exhalation; coordinate the flow of breath and energy in whatever manner suits you best. However, if you

reach the stage where you can complete a full Microcosmic Orbit in a single breath, it's best to raise energy

up from coccyx to head on exhalation and draw it down from Upper to Lower Elixir Field on inhalation.

If you practice this way for a long time, eventually you can complete a whole cycle of ascent and descent in

one visualization. If you can quietly practice this inner work continuously, whether walking, standing still,

sitting, or lying down, then the vital energy will circulate within, and there will naturally be no problem of

leakage. Chronic physical ailments, Taoists believe, will naturally disappear.

  • 8/12/2019 Mind Walker Workbook

    13/39

    2011Mind WalkerAll Rights Reserved | www.mindwalker.co.za -12 -

Also, once the inner energy is circulating, the breath will naturally become fine, and the true positive energy

of heaven and earth will be inhaled by way of the breath and go down to join your own generative energy.

The two energies will mix together, both to be circulated by you together, descending and ascending over

and over, circulating up and down to replenish the depleted true energy in your body.

This true energy harmonizes and reforms, so that the vital fluids produced by the energy of daily life again

produce true vitality. When true vitality is fully developed, it naturally produces true energy, and when true

energy is fully developed it naturally produces our true spirit.

If you have any physical problems or discomforts in a particular section of your body, focus your energy at

the pass closest to the discomfort and let it throb there for a while. This will help heal and rejuvenate the

injured tissues. For example, if you have pelvic problems, focus energy on the coccyx pass; for lower-back

pain focus on the lowest lumbar vertebra just above the sacrum; for upper-back and shoulder pain focus on

the fifth thoracic vertebra, and so forth.

This meditation may also cause the head to rock or the body to tremble, which, Taoists believe, are signs of

    progress.

Recommended Time: 30 45 minutes, once or twice a day.

    Attitude / Beliefs

    Definition of Belief

Assent to a proposition or affirmation, or the acceptance of a fact, opinion, or assertion as real or true,

without immediate personal knowledge; reliance upon word or testimony; partial or full assurance without

positive knowledge or absolute certainty; persuasion; conviction; confidence; as, belief of a witness; thebelief of our senses.

    How beliefs influence our lives

As seen in the definition, belief occurs when one accepts a fact or opinion even without solid evidence. If, for

example, I am to believe that no one likes me, even if I have no solid evidence, the belief itself becomes a

state of mind which in turn affects my mental processes and is then seen in my body language, verbal

language and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

However, the reverse is also true. If I believe that whenever I walk in a room, everybody there will like and

accept me, then this too will show up in my body subtleties and mannerisms. The trick though is to calibrate

between external input and internal references / patterns.

    Beliefs vs. Habits

    A habit is a recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behaviour that is acquired through frequent repetition;

an established disposition of the mind or character.

Therefore we can see that a habit is created when we repeat a certain action and a belief is something that

    we trust without evidence.

Now we come to the question: When does a habit become a belief? The answer is simple yet counter intuitive.

As a habit is formed it occurs unconsciously, therefore mostly we are unaware of the habit until it is pointed

out to us or we notice ourselves doing it long after it has been formed. If a habit carries on without

interference it can become a belief.

    For example:

If I chew my nails and do not realize when I am doing it, and someone points it out to me, yet I am unable to

stop it, and this in turn discourages the formation of relationships, it could become a belief that I cant get a

date because I chew my nails. The danger here is that the more I am unable to get a date, and the more I

believe it is because I chew my nails, the less likely I am able to stop chewing my nails because I associate it

to being a part of my character. And thus a vicious circle is born.

    Changing habits vs. Changing beliefs

Changing a habit is relatively easy. You just have to a) disassociate from it; b) Associate pain to doing the

habit and c) associate pleasure to overcoming the challenge the habit is posing.

Changing beliefs follows a similar pattern, yet there are some different characteristics involved.

When we as humans question anything enough times, we begin to create doubt in it. If I am to change a

limiting belief, the first step would be to question the belief itself.

In out example about nail biting and dating, I would question whether I get frowned upon every time I bitemy nails, have there been times where I was unsuccessful with dating when not biting my nails and even if I

know of anyone else who is successful with dating even though they might be biting their nails.

Day 2 Saturday: The Garden of Eden

    The Senses

    External vs. Internal senses

External senses involve everything you can see, hear, feel, smell and taste. It is the way we interact with the

physical, hallucinated world we find ourselves in.

When we speak of internal senses, we refer to what is called the 6thsense, intuition, ESP. All those

extraordinary, unconscious sensations we experience when we feel we just know something without

    knowing how we know.

When we get to Rapport and the use of senses and body language, we will go into this in more detail.

    Addiction to biochemistry

Biochemistry follows the same pattern as drug addiction

When we experience a flood of emotion the chemistry resulting from this rush of emotion binds to our cells

in the same way as heroine does, which leads us to understand that if we can be addicted to a drug like

heroine we can indeed be addicted to emotion.

    Slavery of the mind

This biochemical addiction causes the mind to find ways to meet these emotional/chemical needs

manifesting thoughts and behaviour patterns to recreate these chemical needs in fact very condition is what

is meant when spiritual teachers say we are living in the past. It is because we are unable to experience new

experiences as long as we are filtering them through the model of past chemical experiences so instead of

trying to create new experiences we unconsciously are trying to relive old chemical experiences much as the

drug addicted personality always trying to recreate the original high.

    Overcoming the addiction

To release ourselves from the addiction is to first discover what exactly we are addicted to. Once we discover

the emotion we can realign it new growth to stepping outside of the box.

The death of the false self

The deepest trouble caused by this chemical addiction is the creation of a false self a superficial vehicle that

we generate as a way to meet these needs. This formulates the false self which is in fact an artificial

    archetype in and of it.

    Stepping into the labyrinth

    Rapport vs. Psychic Rapport

Maybe one of the most powerful tools from the NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is that of rapport.

Rapport is essentially a state of connection or likeness as experienced by 2 or more people. This has a

general effect of creating these feelings in someone by mirroring some of their behaviour characteristics

such as tonality, posture, language and so on.

Psychic rapport on the other hand is when connection is experienced prior to any of these outer patterns it is

the occurrence of the unconscious mind recognising matching internal patterns such as core believes and

values or matching models of the world it is in these instances where we have the experience of instant

connection or love at first sight.

  • 8/12/2019 Mind Walker Workbook

    18/39

    2011Mind WalkerAll Rights Reserved | www.mindwalker.co.za -17 -

    Building rapport

The simplest and most typical way of building rapport is to mimic the body language of the person whom

you wish to build rapport with. This being said, care should be taken not to mimic every single asset or we

might stand at a danger of insulting the person rather than building rapport. Start by breathing at the same

rate, standing in a similar posture, and also notice the type of words used by the other person. Are they

using words that describe what they see, what they hear or how they feel? Layer your responses with

similar words describing your own experience in the same sensory range.

    For example:

If the person says something in the lines of: Im not really seeing eye to eye with Johns statement

You can reply with: Ive noticed you two dont visualize the same outcome

    Eye accessing cues

Eye accessing cues also form an important part of the internal processes whilst people are communicating.

By the direction the eyes of the other person is moving in, we can calibrate whether they are seeingsomething, hearing something or recalling a feeling internally.

    2011Mind WalkerAll Rights Reserved | www.mindwalker.co.za -18 -

    Use of Sub-modalities

Sub-modalities are the nuances that affect the way memories are recalled and experienced within the mind.

If an image is brighter, more colourful and bigger we tend to associate more emotions to this image than we

would when picturing a dull, fuzzy, out of focus, black and white image.

Similarly when we recall a dialogue and we hear it in stereo surround sound, bass driven, loud and clear we

will have more emotion associated to it than we would if it were tinny, monotonous, echoing and unclear.

    Patterns

    What is a mental pattern?

Patterns are the internal programs we run in our minds when we think of any scenario, interaction and / or

situation. A pattern is the default, automatic, unconscious program the brain runs.

    For example:

When someone initiates a handshake we dont think whether or not we are going to shake the persons hand,an automatic function runs in our minds and we start lifting our hand to meet theirs and return the gesture.

This all happens in less than a second.

It is because of these automatic programs or patterns that we know the unconscious is the underlying power

in the mind. Basically any pattern the brain runs is a learnt response and can be either changed or whilst the

mind is in the middle of running the pattern and is interrupted, the thinking pattern of the individual can be

directed in a new direction without involving the critical factor of the mind.

    The kingdom within

Quantum mechanics has for some time now given us the knowledge that the entire physical world is

generated from the quantum world this is very much in alignment with the idea of the ancients that all

things in the physical have their original in the astral or non-physical world and that the physical is but a

    mirror copy.

But the journey goes deeper than this. The kingdom of heaven described later in the tree of life is a map of

the super conscious or what Carl Yung referred to as the collective unconscious.

    Useful vs. Limiting patterns

A useful pattern is for example remaining calm in a stressful situation. This enables you to strategize around

the situation without getting emotionally involved.

Limiting patterns are seen in phobias, where the individual experiences an abreaction when encountering

    his / her phobia.

    The origin of limiting patterns

Any pattern that is created once served the individuals survival instinct.

A fear of heights for example was created at one stage in the persons life to protect them from falling. These

patterns are created regardless whether / not there was a cause for alarm. Hence why if certain patterns

remain they continue to increase in strength and serious limiting phobias can evolve.

    Reframing

Reframing is the technique when the emotional reaction to a pattern is removed due to the changing of the

language used to describe the experience.

    For Example:

    I never get lucky!

When we change this to I dont always get lucky it presupposes that there are times when luck is in fact

experienced. Reframing is one of the most important techniques used in NLP in our modern day and age.

    Patterns vs. Rituals

For most people ceremonial magick is a foreign land yet what they do not realise is that they are already

    doing ceremonial magick.

    Letstake falling in love

Step 1: you may notice someone (visual external).

Step 2: you may tell yourself something about the way they are (audio internal)

Step 3: you may notice them smiling at you in just the right way (visual external)

Step 4: in your mind you may think what it would be like to kiss them (internal kinaesthetic)

    Result: falling in love

In simple forms you already have internalised or unconscious rituals you perform for every single emotion

you experience. Ritual magick is simply the expansion of these and the conscious design of these as opposed

to the automated ones designed to make you the victim of advertisers

Write down your ritual for falling in love:_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Anchoring

    State management

The controlling force of our lives is our states which are in essence the combination of our current mind and

body state. But most people think that these factors are outside of their control when the truth is they are

fully inside your control. Letstake the following example

I want you to hope youregoing to achieve your current goal

Sit the way you would sit if you were hoping it would happen.

Talk to yourself the way you would if you hoped it would happen.

Breathe the way you would if you hoped you would just get that goal.

Now do the same but expect it will happen.

Move your body the way you would if you were certain it would manifest

Talk to yourself the way you would if you were certain

breath the way you would if you were certain.

There is your proof. You can manage your state. Nothing externally happened to cause you to feel hope or

expectation it was simply you directing your mind and body in a way that would activate this energy

    currently inside you.

    Now letsdo an exercise:

On a scale of 1 10 how are you currently for the emotion of passion to your goal?_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Tree of Life and the gods within

The tree of life can better be seen as a perfect neuro-cortex of associations in harmonic relationship.

In the bible we are introduced with the character Adam. Yet later in the bible we have word of a second

Adam an Adam Kadman also known as the perfected Adam.

The first Adam is in flaw as the tree of life when it was first created the light was to strong and shattered the

tree producing the fallen tree of the shells we see this better illustrated in the original story of Adam and hisfirst wife Lilith who after being rejected by Adam spawned all the demons of the world. This very idea is

similar to how when we are unable to accept we repress and these repressions take on a negative life of its

own until they are integrated or exorcized and purified.

After Adam first failed relationship he is given eve which we see in psychology as the animus anima principle

or the inner woman in men and the inner man in woman. This usually where the first psychological divide

occurs as we enter a state of primary duality. Or for all intent and purposes are kicked out of the Garden of

    Eden.

Into the realm of duality driven by pain and pleasure

As such we see Adam in this immature form being as the masculine principle of consciousness or Chokma

and eve as the feminine principle seen as Binah. Beyond this the veil flips the polarities of the tree again as

we split from the internal to the external. We see the decent as follows:

    Matter and consciousness

    The nature of consciousness

Ervin Laszlo has proposed that the virtual energy field known as the quantum vacuum, or zero-point field,

corresponds to what Indian teachings have called Akasha - the source of everything that exists, and in which

the memory of the cosmos is encoded. I would like to take his reasoning a step further and suggest that thenature of this ultimate source is consciousness itself, nothing more and nothing less.

Again we find this idea is not new. In the Upanishads, Brahman, the source of the cosmos (literally, "that

from which everything grows"), is held to be to Atman ("that which shines"), the essence of consciousness.

And in the opening lines of The Dhammapada, the Buddha declares that "All phenomena are preceded by

mind, made by mind, and ruled by mind".

Such a view, though widespread in many metaphysical systems, is completely foreign to the current

scientific worldview. The world we see is so obviously material in nature; any suggestion that it might have

more in common with mind is quickly rejected as having "no basis in reality". However, when we consider

this alternative worldview more closely, it turns out that it is not in conflict with any of the findings of

modern scienceonly with its presuppositions. Furthermore, it leads to a picture of the cosmos that is even

    more enchanted.

    All in the Mind

The key to this alternative view is the fact that all our experiencesall our perceptions, sensations, dreams,

thoughts and feelingsare forms appearing in consciousness. It doesn't always seem that way. When I see a

tree it seems as if I am seeing the tree directly. But science tells us something completely different is

happening. Light entering the eye triggers chemical reactions in the retina; these produce electro-chemical

impulses which travel along nerve fibres to the brain. The brain analyses the data it receives, and then

creates its own picture of what is out there. I then have the experience of seeing a tree. But what I am

actually experiencing is not the tree itself, only the image that appears in the mind. This is true of everything

I experience. Everything we know, perceive, and imagine, every colour, sound, sensation, every thought and

every feeling, is a form appearing in the mind. It is all an in-forming of consciousness.

The idea that we never experience the physical world directly has intrigued many philosophers. Most

notable was the eighteenth-century German philosopher Immanual Kant, who drew a clear distinction

between the form appearing in the mindwhat he called the phenomenon (a Greek word meaning "that

which appears to be")and the world that gives rise to this perception, which he called the noumenon(meaning that which is apprehended"). All we know, Kant insisted, is the phenomenon. The noumenon, the

thing-in-itself, remains forever beyond our knowing.

Unlike some of his predecessors, Kant was not suggesting that this reality is the only reality. Irish theologian

Bishop Berkeley had likewise argued that we know only our perceptions. He then concluded that nothing

exists apart from our perceptions, which forced him into the difficult position of having to explain what

happened to the world when no one perceived it. Kant held that there is an underlying reality, but we never

know it directly. All we can ever know of it is the form that appears in the mindour mental model of what

    is "out there".

It is sometimes said that our model of reality is an illusion, but that is misleading. It may all be an appearance

in the mind, but it is nonetheless realthe only reality we ever know. The illusion comes when we confuse

the reality we experience with the physical reality, the thing-in-itself. The Vedantic philosophers of ancient

India spoke of this confusion as maya.Often translated as illusion (a false perception of the world), maya

is better interpreted as delusion (a false belief about the world). We suffer a delusion when we believe the

images in our minds are the external world. We deceive ourselves when we think that the tree we see is the

    tree itself.

The tree itself is a physical object, constructed from physical mattermolecules, atoms, sub-atomic

particles. But from what is the image in the mind constructed? Clearly it is not constructed from physical

matter. A perceptual image is composed of the same "stuff" as our dreams, thoughts, and feelings, and we

would not say that these are created from physical atoms or molecules. (There might or might not be a

corresponding physical activity in the brain, but what I am concerned with here is the substance of the image

itself.) So what is the mental substance from which all our experiences are formed?

The English language does not have a good word for this mental essence. In Sanskrit, the word chitta, often

translated as consciousness, carries the meaning of mental substance, and is sometimes translated as "mind

stuff". It is that which takes on the mental forms of images, sounds, sensations, thoughts, and feelings. They

are made of "mind stuff" rather than "matter stuff".

Mind stuff, or chitta, has the potential to take on the form of every possible experienceeverything that I, or

anyone else, could possibly experience in life; every experience of every being, on this planet, or any othersentient being, anywhere in the cosmos. In this respect consciousness has infinite potential. In the words of

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, "Consciousness is the field of all possibilities".

  • 8/12/2019 Mind Walker Workbook

    2011Mind WalkerAll Rights Reserved | www.mindwalker.co.za -28 -

This aspect of consciousness can be likened to the light from a film projector. The projector shines light onto

a screen, modifying the light so as to produce one of an infinity of possible images. These images are like the

perceptions, sensations, dreams, memories, thoughts, and feelings that we experiencethe forms arising in

consciousness. The light itself, without which no images would be possible, corresponds to this ability of

    consciousness to take on form.

We know all the images on a movie screen are composed of light, but we are not usually aware of the light

itself; our attention is caught up in the images that appear and the stories they tell. In much the same way,we know we are conscious, but we are usually aware only of the many different perceptions, thoughts, and

feelings that appear in the mind. We are seldom aware of consciousness itself.

Although we may not know the external world directly, we can draw conclusions from our experience as to

what it might be like. This, in essence, has been the focus of our scientific endeavours. Scientists have sought

to understand the functioning of the world around us, and draw conclusions about its true nature.

To the surprise of many, the world "out there" has turned out to be quite unlike our experience of it.

Consider our experience of the colour green. In the physical world there is light of a certain frequency, but

the light itself is not green. Nor are the electrical impulses that are transmitted from the eye to the brain. No

colour exists there. The green we see is a quality appearing in the mind in response to this frequency of light.

It exists only as a subjective experience in the mind.

The same is true of sound. I hear the music of a violin, but the sound I hear is a quality appearing in the mind.

There is no sound as such in the external world, just vibrating air molecules. The smell of a rose does not

exist without an experiencing mind, just molecules of a certain shape.

    2011Mind WalkerAll Rights Reserved | www.mindwalker.co.za -29 -

The same is also true of the solidness we experience in matter. Our experience of the world is certainly one

of solidness, so we assume that the "thing in itself" must be equally solid. For two thousand years it was

believed that atoms were tiny solid balls a model clearly drawn from everyday experience. Then, as

physicists discovered that atoms were composed of more elementary, subatomic particles (electrons,

protons, neutrons, and suchlike) the model shifted to one of a central nucleus surrounded by orbiting

electronsagain, a model based on experience.

An atom may be small, a mere billionth of an inch across, but subatomic particles are a hundred thousandtimes smaller still. Imagine the nucleus of an atom magnified to the size of a golf ball. The whole atom would

then be the size of a football stadium, and the electrons would be like peas flying round the stands. As the

early twentieth-century British physicist Sir Arthur Eddington put it, Matter is mostly ghostly empty space.

To be more precise, it is 99.9999999% empty space.

With the development of quantum theory, physicists have found that even subatomic particles are far from

solid. In fact, they are nothing like matter as we know it. They cannot be pinned down and measured

precisely. Much of the time they seem more like waves than particles. They are like fuzzy clouds of potential

existence, with no definite location. Whatever matter is, it has little, if any, substance.

Our notion of matter as a solid substance is, like the colour green, a quality appearing in consciousness. It is a

model of what is "out there", but as with almost every other model, quite unlike what is actually out there.

Even the notion of mass is questionable. In his General Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein showed that

mass and acceleration are indistinguishable. A person in an elevator feels lighter when the elevator

accelerates downwards and heavier when it decelerates to a halt. This is no illusion; scales would also show

your weight to have changed. What we experience as mass is the resistance of the ground beneath our feet to

our otherwise free fall towards the center of the Earth. According to Einstein, we are being continually

decelerated, and interpret that as mass. An astronaut in orbit experiences no massuntil, that is, he bumps

into the wall of the spacecraft and experiences a temporary deceleration.

Einstein's work also revealed that space and time are not absolutes. They vary according to the motion of the

observer. If you are moving rapidly past me, and we both measure the distance and time between two

eventsa car traveling from one end of a street to another, saythen you will observe the car to have

travelled less distance in less time than I observe. Conversely, from your point of view, I am moving rapidly

past you, and in your frame of reference I will observe less space and time than you do. Weird? Yes. And

almost impossible for us to conceive. Yet numerous experiments have shown it to be true. It is our common

sense notions of space and time that are wrong. Once again they are constructs in the mind, and do not

perfectly model what is out there.

Kant foresaw this a hundred years before Einstein. He concluded that space and time is the dimensional

framework in which the mind constructs its experience. They are built into the perceiving process, and we

cannot but think in terms of space and time. But they are not aspects of the objective reality. That reality,

according to Einstein, is something else, what he called "space-time". When observed, space-time appears as

a certain amount of space and a certain amount of time. But how much is perceived as space and how much

is perceived as time is not fixed; they depend upon the motion of the observer.

If space, time, and matter have no absolute objective status, what about energy? Physicists have a hard time

saying exactly what energy is. It is defined as the potential to do work, that is, to create change. Energycomes in many different forms: potential energy, kinetic energy, chemical energy, electrical energy, heat

energy, radiation energy. But we never measure energy as such, only the changes that we attribute to

    energy.

Energy if often said to be a fundamental quality of the cosmos. But that too turns out to be a mistake.

According the Special Theory of Relativity, energy and mass are interchangeable, related by Einstein's

famous equation, E=mc2. Observers traveling at different speeds will differ in their measurements of how

    much energy an object has.

Quantum theory offers further clues as to the nature of energy. The quantum is commonly called a quantum

of energy, the smallest possible unit of energy. But that is not strictly correct. The quantum is actually aquantum of action.

What is action? It is another physical quantity like distance, velocity, momentum, force, and others that we

meet in physics, but it is not usually given much attention in our basic math or physics

The amount of action in a quantum is exceedingly small, about 0.00000000000000000000000000662618

erg.secs (or 6.62618 x 10 erg/second in mathematical shorthand)but it is always exactly the same amount.

It was one of the few absolutes in existence, and more fundamental than space, time, matter, or energy. The

Zero-Point Field is not therefore a potential energy fielddespite the fact it is often referred to as such. It is

a potential quantum field, a field of potential action.

A photon is a single quantum of light, but the energy associated with a photon varies enormously. A gamma-

ray photon, for example, packs trillions of times more energy than a radio-wave photon. But each and every

photon, each and every quantum, is an identical unit of action.

When the photon is absorbedby the retina of the eye, sayit manifests as a certain amount of energy,

measured by the amount of change it is capable of creating. This change is what is conveyed to the brain and

then interpreted as colour. The amount of change, or energy, is dependent upon the frequency, which is why

we say different colours correspond to different frequencies of light.

What is frequency? Again it is another model taken from experience and then imagined to apply to the

photon. It is most unlikely that a photon has frequency as we think of it. Indeed, even the idea of a photon is

another example of how we have projected our experience on to the external world. We experience particles

so imagine light might be a particle. We also have the experience of waves, so imagine light as a wave.

Sometimes light seems to fit one description, other times another. It is much more likely that light is neither

wave nor particle. For reasons of space, I will not go into the details of the argument here, but the interested

reader can find more in my book From Science to God.

To summarize the argument so far: Our whole experience is a construction in the mind, a form appearing in

consciousness. These mental forms are composed not of physical substance but of "mind stuff". We imagine

that the world out there is like the forms that appear in consciousness, but it turns out, that in nearly every

aspect; the external is not at all like the images created in the mind. What appear to us as fundamentaldimensions and attributes of the physical worldspace, time, matter and energyare but the fundamental

dimensions and attributes of the forms appearing in consciousness.

In Chapter Four, Ervin introduces panpsychism: the hypothesis that consciousness is not unique to human

beings, or higher animals, or even creatures with nervous systems. It is in everything. As he is at pains to

point out, this is not to imply that simpler systems have thoughts or feelings, or any of the other mental

functions that we associate with consciousness, only that the capacity for consciousness is there in some

    form, however faint.

Even a lowly bacterium has a glimmer of the inner light, maybe a billionth of the inner light we know, but not

    nothing at all.

The current scientific paradigm assumes the exact oppositethat matter itself is completely insentient, it is

completely devoid of the capacity for experience. Consciousness only comes into existence with the

evolution of complex nervous systems. The problem with this viewDavid Chalmers', "hard problem"is

explaining how conscious experience could ever emerge from insentient matter. Why doesn't all that neural

processing go on "in the dark?"

Ervin argues that the only tenable answer, anathema as it may be to the current scientific worldview, is that

the capacity for inner experience does not suddenly appear, as if by magic, once a particular level of

complexity has arisen. The potential for inner experience has been there all along.

Panpsychism is usually taken to imply that there are dual aspects to everything. There is the physical aspect,

that which we can observe from the outside, and there is a mental aspect, the experiences known from the

inside. For a long time I went along with this dual aspect view. But recently I have begun to question it. I

have not questioned whether or not there is a mental aspect, which is the question that most people raise. I

have come to question whether there is, after all, a physical aspect. I realize this is radical to many, but let me

briefly go over the reasons behind this suggestion and the implications.

Every time we try to pin down the physical aspect we come away empty-handed. Every idea we have had of

the physical has proven to be wrong, and the notion of materiality seems to be evaporating before our eyes.

But our belief in the material world is so deeply engrainedand so powerfully reinforced by ourexperiencethat we cling to our assumption that there must be some physical essence. Like the medieval

astronomers who never questioned their assumption that the Earth was the center of the universe, we never

question our assumption that the external world is physical in nature. Indeed it was quite startling to me

when I realized that the answer might be staring us straight in the face. Maybe there really is nothing there.

No "thing" that is. No physical aspect. Maybe there is only a mental aspect to everything.

We would then have to think of the Akashi Field as a field that is entirely mental in nature. Its essence is the

essence of mind. It's hard to imagine, I know. In fact all we can imagine are the forms arising in our minds.

We cannot imagine consciousness itself. It is the imaginer, that in which images arise. It is probably best not

even to try to imagine what a mental field is like, for we would surely be as wrong as when we try to imaginequanta, or space-time.

All we can say about it is that it is not a uniform field. It must contain distinctions of some kind, for it is these

variations that are the origin of our perception of the world. If there were no variations in the field, there

would be nothing to observe, nothing to experience.

These variations in the field are the "objects" of our perception. But they are not objects in the sense of a

material object. They only become material objects in the mind of the observer. There then appears to be a

material "thing" out there. We then assume that the physicality we experience, which seems so intrinsic to

the world we know, must also be an intrinsic aspect of the external world.

Even though there may be no physical basis to the external world, the laws of physics still hold true. The only

thing that changes is our assumption of what we are measuring. We are not measuring physical particles or

such, but perturbations in the Akashi mind-field. The laws of "physics" become the laws governing the

unfolding of a mental field, reflections of how perturbations in this field interact.

What we call an elementary particle would correspond to an elementary variation in the field. We might

better call it an elementary entity rather than particle. Elementary entities are organized into atoms,

molecules, cells and suchlike, just as in the current paradigm. The difference is that we no longer have to

think of consciousness sensing matter (with all the difficulties that involves of how the physical influences

the mental); consciousness is now sensing consciousness directly.

Interaction might now be thought of as perceptionthe perception of one region in the mind-field by

another. In the current view every interaction is mediated by a quantum of action (an inter-action). In this

alternative view, the smallest item would be a unit of perception, a unit of experience. It would be a quantum

of consciousness, a quantum of chitta.

In the physical world of our experience we have discovered action to be a fundamental quality. In this

alternative view, that still is true. Consciousness acts as it takes form. A quantum of action is a quantum of

    experience, a quantum of chitta.

We can now begin to understand why the material world appears to be devoid of consciousness. The

qualities that appear in the mindthe colour, sound, smell, substance, or whateverbecome objects of

perception, "the material world". But there is no sign of consciousness itself in the images of matter that

appear in the mind. Just as when we watch a movie, the picture on the screen may be composed of light, but

there is no evidence in the unfolding story that this is the case. The forms that arise in the mind give no hint

in themselves that they are all manifestations of mind stuff. They appear to be other than consciousness. And

so we assume that the stuff of the world "out there"the matter stuffis insentient.

    Alliance with the unseen.

Each man and woman is born with an existing alliance with spirit these have been called spirit guides and

helpers. The spirits that share our astral space share our psychological conditions and can be communicated

    via the white mirror method.

Using the white mirror method anyone can develop the clear psychic powers of clairvoyance and

clairaudience required to fully communicate with spirit.

The white mirror method reveals the spirits currently in the practitionersastral space and as such give

revelation to the psyche or souls current level of development or purification. We can after practice with the

white mirror do the same with others reading the astral frequencies as we develop greater astral sensitivity.

A common frustration that people have is that if spirit is real why dont they respond when I speak with

them well the truth is they actually do every time the problem is the same as two people speaking different

languages no matter how much the one asks the question and the other answers it as they are not on the

same level so to speak the communication fails the same is true of spirit who simply communicates at a

different level of vibration and we are usually in a denser level of vibration cannot are not tuned into the

    incoming signal.

    Reality

    How the brain creates reality

In quantum mechanics, the Heisenberg uncertainty principlestates a fundamental limit on the accuracy

with which certain pairs of physical properties of a particle, such as position and momentum, cannot be

simultaneously known. In other words, the more precisely one property is measured, the less precisely theother can be controlled, determined, or known.

Max Born states, in his Nobel Laureate speech:

To measure space coordinates and instants of time, rigid measuring rods and clocks are

required. On the other hand, to measure momenta and energies, devices are necessary with

movable parts to absorb the impact of the test object and to indicate the size of its

momentum. Paying regard to the fact that quantum mechanics is competent for dealing with

the interaction of object and apparatus, it is seen that no arrangement is possible that will

    fulfil both requirements simultaneously."

Published by Werner Heisenberg in 1927, the uncertainty principle was a key discovery in the early

development of quantum theory. It implies that it is impossible to simultaneously measure the

present position while also determining the future motion of a particle or of any system small

enough to require quantum mechanical treatment. Intuitively, the principle can be understood by

considering a typical measurement of a particle's position, which involves the scattering of light or

other particles off of the target, and this involves the probabilistic exchange of energy. The

uncertainty principle is a fundamental property of quantum systems, not a statement about the

observational strength of current technology.[2]Some uncertainty about such particles is

unavoidable. One can at least, however, identify the averagemomentum and position of particles

    (using weak measurements).

The principle states specifically that the product of the uncertainties in position and momentum is

always equal to or greater than one half of , the reduced Planck constant 2pi is also referredto

Mathematically, the uncertainty relation between position and momentum arises because the

expressions of the wave function in the two corresponding bases are Fourier transforms of one

another. In the mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics, any non-commuting operatorsare subject to similar uncertainty limits.

In short the uncertainty principle states that it is the observer that collapses energy into matter.
