Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is thename given to emancipation day by African-Americans in Texas. On that day in 1865Union Major-General Gordon Granger readGeneral Orders, No.3 to the people ofGalveston. It stated:
"The people of Texas are informed that, inaccordance with a proclamation from theExecutive of the United States, all slaves arefree. This involves an absolute equality of per-sonal rights and rights of property between for-mer masters and slaves, and the connectionheretofore existing between them becomes thatbetween employer and hired labor. The freed-men are advised to remain quietly at their pres-ent homes and work for wages. They areinformed that they will not be allowed to collectat military posts and that they will not be sup-ported in idleness either there or elsewhere."
Large celebrations on June 19 began in1866 and continued regularly into the early20th century. The African-Americans treatedthis day like the Fourth of July and the celebra-tions contained similar events. In the early days, the celebration included a prayer service, speakers with inspirational messages, readingof the emancipation proclamation, stories from
former slaves, food, red soda water, games, rodeos and dances.
The celebration of June 19 as emancipa-tion day spread from Texas to the neighboringstates of Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Ithas also appeared in Alabama, Florida, andCalifornia as African-American Texans migrat-ed.
In many parts of Texas, ex-slaves pur-chased land, or "emancipation grounds," forthe Juneteenth gathering. Examples include:Emancipation Park in Houston, purchased in1872; what is now Booker T. Washington Parkin Mexia; and Emancipation park in EastAustin.
Celebration of Juneteenth declined duringWorld War II but revived in 1950 at the TexasState Fair Grounds in Dallas. Interest and par-ticipation fell away during the late 1950's and1960's as attention focused on expansion offreedom for African-Americans. In the 1970's Juneteenth revived in some communities. Forexample, in Austin the Juneteenth celebrationreturned in 1976 after a 25 year hiatus.
The preceding information was taken formthe Texas State Library and ArchivesCommission Web site.

On June 3 the Milwaukee CommonCouncil overwhelmingly approvedJuneteenth Day as an optional holiday forcity employees. The annual holiday falls on June 19 and marks the date that the lastenslaved people of African descent receivedword of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs authoredthe legislation, which was co-sponsored by 11
Council colleagues.Juneteenth Day is a time of reflection onhistory, remembrance of culture, and celebra-tion of family and community. It is important
that we allow city workers the option of a paidholiday (using vacation) for Juneteenth,Alderwoman Coggs said. City employees maynow take the optional paid holiday by usingvacation time on another paid holiday in thesame calendar year.
Juneteenth Day does not change the tot alnumber of annual paid holidays, and if it fallson a work day, departments will remain open
and workers will not receive holiday premiumpay. Although President Abraham Lincolnissued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan.1, 1863, Juneteenth Day recognizes the dateMajor General Gordon Granger and his regi-ment of Union soldiers landed at Galveston,Texas, and freed the enslaved Africans there in1865.
The Common Council passed similar legis-lation in March 2014 recognizing March 31as Cesar E. Chavez Day, an optional holi-day to honor the birthday of Cesar Chavez, achampion of civil rights, labor rights, voting
rights, and womens rights.

Create a backyard escape with the help ofcontainer gardens. Whether youre looking fora visit to the desert, an English garden or tropi-cal paradise, a few planters can help create themood.
Reduce your workload and increase yourenjoyment with a bit of planning and properplanting.
Select a container with drainage holes andone that mimics the color and feel of the loca-tion you are trying to recreate. Use troughs, stone or other containers made from neutral
colors when growing succulents. The containershould complement, but not overpower the sim-ple beauty of the desert plants.
Keep things warm and natural when goingfor a more tropical feel. Wicker, bamboo andother natural materials work well with the lushfoliage and vibrant colors of tropical plants.
Add a few terra cotta, metal and baskettype containers when creating an English cot-tage setting. Set them on your patio, steps or inthe garden to create a focal point.
Keep your plants looking good throughoutthe season with the proper planting mix. Lookfor potting mixes with good drainage and water
holding abilities, like Schultz Potting Soil Plus(schultz.com). Check the label as some mixescontain enough fertilizer to last the entire seasonand water-retaining crystals to reduce the needto water.
Use a cactus mix that provides the perfectgrowing conditions for cacti and succulents. Thepotting mix should retain the moisture and nutri-ents the plants need, while providing the excel-lent drainage that is a must for these plants.
Plant any orchids added to your backyardtropical paradise in a potting mix designed forthese plants. Use an orchid mix that has excel-lent drainage and aeration, yet retains the mois-
ture and nutrients these beauties need to thrive.Check your planters daily and water thor-
oughly whenever the top few inches of soil arecrumbly and slightly moist. Allow cacti and suc-culents to go a bit drier.
Mulch the soil in tropical, herb, vegetableand annual container gardens. Spread a thinlayer of shredded leaves, evergreen needles ortwice shredded bark over the soil surface. Usefine pebbles for cacti and succulents that likethings hot and dry.
And dont forget about garden accents. Awattle fence and arbor of twigs and brancheswork well for an English garden setting, while awater feature can enhance a tropical paradisethemed garden, and some southwest gardenart can complete the desert scene youre goingfor.
So start your vacation this year with a t rip tothe garden center. Invest in a few containers, the right potting mix and plants. Then plant yourway to the retreat of your dreams.

The Capuchins Run Walk for the Hungry toGerman Fest has once again been named thecharity for the German Fest 5K run and 2Milewalk, to be held Friday, July 25, 7 p.m., at thelakefront. This is the 9th year for the event whoseproceeds are shared by the Capuchin ministries,St. Bens Community Meal and House of Peace, inorder to feed the hungry.
This is an important event for Milwaukeeshungry, Capuchin Friar Brother Dave Schwabexplains. Not only do 100% of the events pro-ceeds go to feeding those who are without, butUsingers Sausage has once again donated up toone pound of product for every runner and walk-
er. Our goal this year is well over 3,000 partici-pants. That adds up to a lot of food!
This year we have a new date, new gate, and new course route, Brother Dave continues. The run will take place Friday evening. That willgive everyone the opportunity to enjoy theGerman Fest activities immediately after ouraward presentations.
Registration and pre-event festivities will betaking place at the South Gate this year. Ourcourses are new as well. The runner and walkerroutes will be totally separated. The runners 5Kwill be all along the lake front, perfect if its awarm evening. The walkers will enjoy a 2 mile
route through Lakeshore State Park. The $25 run and $20 walk registration fee
includes entrance into German Fest, a $5 GermanFest food and drink gift coupon, and a 2-for-1return coupon to German Fest. Overall trophiesand age category medals will be presented to therunners. Bill Michaels, the Big Unit, will behosting the event.
Chips will be used to time and score the 5Kparticipants. The walk will be timed, but notscored.
Milwaukees hunger needs escalate duringthe summer months due to children being out ofschool and donors and volunteers who are on
vacation. People think of us during the holidays, for which we are grateful, but our highest demandis during the summer months, Brother Dave con-cludes.

BE PART OF AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER THAT HAS BEEN
PROUDLY SERVING CONTRACT MANUFACTURING SINCE 1923.
Thats So BoringLosing interest in your job? Tired of performing the
same tasks year after year? Sick of the office politics?Feeling underpaid and unappreciated? Many workers gothrough this plateau phase of employment. It is acommon malady and thankfully it is curable. Withouttaking drastic measures, you can learn to enjoy your jobagain.
Often when we start a new job, we are excited aboutthe level of responsibility and the new environment andpeople. We tend to work hard to impress our supervisor. But after a few years, the boredom sets in and we beginto think we could do our jobs in our sleep. What wasonce challenging no longer takes much thought or effortand a lackadaisical attitude ensues.
Researchers have found that a bad attitude produces
bad work, so attitude is where well begin. Try toremember back to when you first started the job. Think about what it was about the position that you relished. Was it learning a new skill or using an old one? Was itworking with customers or the fact that you didnt haveto work directly with clients anymore? Was it the level of responsibility or the lack thereof? Try to pinpoint all theareas you liked and write them down.
How you respond to this hump of boredom directlyaffects the outcome. If you give up hoping you can makeyour job better, youll spiral further into a pit of darkness. The second option, looking for another job, will only temporarily solve your dilemmain three orfour years youll be right back where you are today. Thethird option, however, will help you find ways torekindle your enthusiasm and change your attitude andperformance.
Before making a move, ask yourself if you have acareer goal right now. As we mature, we often view lifefrom a different perspective which can change our careergoals.
Consider your new career goals. Where do you want toend up? Learn more about the product or service yourcompany sells. Make sure your suggestions aremanageable, considering your current workload, andmake sure youre doing good work. A plan that benefitsthe company as well as yourself will speak volumesabout your sincerity and increase your value as anemployee.
Having a clear path of goals to follow no matter howsmall will give you something to work toward, and moreimportantly, a reason to work besides a paycheck.
