"Back-to-school" specials now run allsummer long and, while kids may notwant to think about summer’s end, smartparents can take advantage of all thedeals to save money and send their chil -dren to school with everything theyneed.

According to the National RetailFederation, nearly a quarter of familiesstart shopping for school supplies twomonths before school starts. That meansretail stores are putting their best footforward all summer long. Better BusinessBureau has some tips for consumers totake advantage of all the savings possi-ble:

Create a budget. A budget will helpshape your shopping list and help limitpurchases to only items you need.Knowing your budget will also allow youto put money towards larger items or aspecial purchase.

Create a shopping list. Make a list bychild or by store to avoid multiple trips.Clearpoint Credit Counseling Solutionssuggests starting by "shopping at home"for items you may have left over from last

year.Research major purchases. Whenshopping for laptops, calculators, dormrefrigerators and other large purchases,do your homework. Research the brandsyou’re looking for to see what meets

your expectations.Check for educational discounts.

Some computer and software compa-nies offer discounts to students andteachers with .edu email addresses. Some of these can be quite substantial,so check around.

Don’t miss sales. Compare pricesbetween different retail stores, savecoupons and be sure to redeem cash-back or rebate offers. Sign-up for emailalerts and download shopping apps foryour favorite stores (RetailMeNot is onepopular coupon and discount app).

Buy in bulk. Some schools ask par-ents to buy items that will be used by theentire class (tissues, hand sanitizer, etc.).Get together with other parents to shopin bulk. Parents of college students canalso buy in bulk for snacks, toiletries andother items for future "care packages."

Save your receipts. You’ll need themif you want to make an exchange orreturn an item. Remember some itemsare non-refundable or have a 30-dayreturn period.
