Reflections
Rev. Barbara K. Gulick
On an August Sunday afternoon in the late 1990’s, with the temperature hovering around 115
degrees, we were traveling north on I-35 from Los Fresnos, TX to Ft. Worth with the goal of spending
the night in an air-conditioned church basement. We were on our way home from a mission trip with a
group of about 15 young people, when the fuel pump in the church van quit doing whatever fuel-pumps
do. We coasted off the exit at West, “the Czech Capital of Texas.” When we quit rolling we had almost
made it to the West Tow Truck Garage where we had been directed by a helpful soul along the way. All
of us crowded into a tiny air-conditioned office where we were met by a welcoming young dispatcher
who spent the rest of her day working the phones for our benefit. She located a fuel pump 20 miles
away in Waco and sent her husband to fetch it. She sweet talked a mechanic into coming in on his day
off to install it. Then the tow truck drivers ferried us to the “Cattleman’s Café” for dinner. And it was
magnificent--with cattle lowing in the background. Our city kids were delighted. We were safely back
on the road before dark. Those caring people extended a welcoming hand to a van load of strangers,
rescuing us on a miserably hot day in what we once thought was a God-forsaken place. We were wrong.
God is alive and well in West, Texas and lives in those dear people.
But now after a devastating explosion it is West who is in need of rescue. At least 12 of their
first responders, most of them volunteers, lost their lives trying to save their community. My heart aches
for our brothers and sisters. And I will be watching and listening for something—anything God may
call us to do to extend a hand of Christian friendship to them, as they did to us on that long ago August
afternoon.
At their May meeting, our MCC Board of Directors will be considering the combined
recommendations of our Membership and Worship Committees and Cabinet to begin a Bluegrass
Worship Service on Saturday evenings in alternate months. If approved, committees will be appointed
to implement the plan as soon as possible. All members and friends will be encouraged to participate in
the planning and implementation. Bluegrass worship offers us a “cutting edge” opportunity to put in
place a worship experience specifically designed to meet the needs of our Millersburg community and
share the love of Christ in a new and vital way without diminishing the power of the Good News. We
are grateful to Rita Adams for calling the possibilities to our attention and for inviting Mickey Heavener
to share her experiences at Rocheport Christian Church in partnership with Broadway Christian Church
with us in February. She also invited Rev. Ed Varnum and Rev. Larry Brown to join Jeff Moran in a
short program of Bluegrass Gospel music. Our Bluegrass Easter Sunrise Worship was well received
thanks to the musical contributions of Jeff and Barb Moran, Rev. Larry Brown, Rev. Ed Varnum, Beth
Haas, and Rick Howard and coordinated by Rita. We look forward to the next step that God is planning
for us.
John and I will be on vacation from April 23 to about May 10th
. Rev. Sally Erickson will bring
the message on April 28th
and Jeff Moran will share some of his experiences on his recent mission trip to
Cuba on May 5th
. I can be reached on my cell phone or by leaving a message on my home phone or e-
mail—listed on the front cover.

Thank You to All Who Joined Us for Our 1st Easter Sunrise Bluegrass Worship!
We cannot express our appreciation enough to the musicians who shared their gifts of time and talent
in making our 1st Easter Sunrise Bluegrass Worship such a success. Former minister, Rev. Larry Brown made
time in his busy schedule to be our lead guitarist and song leader. Through the music grapevine we learned of
Millersburg resident Rick Howard who plays bass fiddle so we welcomed him as a newcomer. The group was
rounded out with Jeff Moran on guitar, Barbara Moran on mountain dulcimer and Beth Haas on piano. Rev.
Gulick picked out some wonderful music for our sing-a-long. We appreciated everyone who got up early that
morning and joined us to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection as we were one in voice sharing some beloved songs!
Thank you Elaine for another
inspiring creation!
Patty Eggleston, Beth Haas, Jewell Holt, Karen Sebacher, Terri Collins, Vicki Fritz and Rita Adams heard an interesting program April 4 presented by Karen on the Center for Women’s Ministries. Everyone brought paper products to support the Center. Kingdom Center for Women’s Ministries will host Their 2nd Annual Community Prayer Brunch, Saturday, May 18 from 9:30-11:30 at Callaway Electric Community Room. This Praise and Worship Event is free to the community. They do ask that we RSVP for food purposes only.

Thank you Noah!
We were very blessed on the
14th to have Noah Givens and his
family and Steve Lohmeyer and his
family, former members of the
Millersburg Preschool, join us during
worship for an “official” blessing and
dedication of the refurbished play
structure, thanks to Noah and Boy
Scout Troop 50. Noah completely
renovated the play structure to
receive his Eagle Scout recognition.
We are truly blessed to have this
wonderful young man in our
community.

“Work of Our Hands” Bazaar and Auction – September 21. We’re expanding the Sweet Treats Auction to include not only sweets and baked goods, but anything made by our hands. So dust off your paint set, sewing machine, work bench, etc. and make something to sell to further the ministries of Millersburg Christian Church. Do you make jewelry? Restore antique furniture? Grow decorative gourds or tomatoes? Sew doll clothes? We’ve heard that some people may make stained-glass art pieces, mosaic-topped tables, painted furniture, carved walking sticks, or tasty salsa. What will you make? Time to start working – in five months, on Saturday, September 21, we’ll join together and celebrate the work of our hands.
Since 2006, Goodsearch users

Three Lunch Bunches formed in

will meet once a quarter after Sunday
worship to share a meal at a restaurant
or enjoy a potluck lunch in someone’s
home. The purpose? To get to know
one another better and have fun!
Check the bulletin board to see
the lunch bunches that have started.
There’s always room for more people in
the Lunch Bunches. Contact Barbara
