For the last four years the first Saturday in February has found me in the bleachers at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. In my hands has been either a sign or a picture that I wave franti-cally at least once if not twice during the day. Sitting with Alice, my sister and brother-in-law Ladd, we stomp our feet, whistle and shout out encouragement with the other family members of the La Crosse Central High School Dance Team. This is fun for a number of reasons. First I adore Emma and Re-bekah, the two young women that I am privileged to call nieces; I enjoy making a fool of myself in support of those I love. Second I have no idea what the judges are looking at when they assign their scores: being at an event where all I have to do is scream foolishly without having to know what is going on is such a break from much else in life that is actually relaxing. Third, I am proud of the ef-forts put out by the La Crosse Central team. Each year they send the smallest number of dancers for any school their size onto the floor. From this simple reality their possibility of winning is greatly

reduced (the one thing that I have learned is the size of the team does matter for the complexity of the team maneuvers) yet they always give their best: for me they are always winners. For the last 11 years I have had the humble privilege and honor of working for one of the greatest organizations not only in the US Dairy industry but in all of American Agriculture. The American Milking Shorthorn Society is not the largest organization but this does not slow us down. You, the members of the American Milking Shorthorn Society, continue to work hard both with your own cattle and within the American Milking Shorthorn Society to improve, promote and expand the breed. You, the members of the American Milking Shorthorn Society, take leadership roles seriously, face fi-nancial realities squarely and address concerns that affect the future of the Red, White and Roan head on. Contrary to dance competi-tions I do have knowledge of how dairy cattle societies and busi-ness works, you, the members of the American Milking Shorthorn Society are real winners on any scale. If I began a list I know I would leave off people who I respect and who have given so much to my family and me so I will not try. All of you have given so much that I can never repay you. What I can give you is this: Thank you. Forever with the Red, White and Roan…David

By Susan Lee, President

Nothings stays the same! With this President’s Post it is time to say “Goodbye” to David Kendall, our now former Executive Sec-retary and “Hello and Welcome!” to Cory Salzl our new Executive Secretary. David leaves us April 1st to accept a new position with Taurus Service, Inc. as their Director of Genetic Development. We have been fortunate to have had the services of Dave for the past 11 years. Thanks, Dave, for all the passion, teaching, long hours, and weekends. How many times have we called the office after hours to leave a simple message and had Dave answer the phone? We have been truly fortunate and we wish Dave all the luck in his new endeavor. As Dave said, most people are lucky if they have one dream job in their lifetime. With his acceptance of this new position, Dave will have had two dream jobs. Furthermore, Dave will still be working with the Red, White and Roan in his new position as he investigates and promotes the genetics of multiple breeds for grazing in the modern dairy world. Come to the National Meeting this May in Kansas to find out more about Dave’s new position and how it will be beneficial to the Milking Shorthorn. Our new Executive Secretary, Cory Salzl, brings the same passion and wealth of knowledge that we have come to appreciate and expect from our Executive Secretary. This is evident, in part, by what he has accomplished in just the last six years that he has owned Milking Shorthorns. Many of you already know Cory, but to find out more, see the page “Meet Our New Executive Secretary” in this issue. After June 28th, Cory will be working from his home in Minnesota but he will be receiving phone calls as if he were in Beloit. Another new beginning involves Genetic Evaluations. As far as anyone “out in the country” might perceive, nothing will change as genetic evaluations will continue to be performed just as they are now. The change comes with the establishment of the Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement (NFCA). A cooperative agreement between the Agricultural Research Service of USDA (ARS) and the Council on

Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) hopefully will be signed by the time you read this. ARS will get back to research, which is what they do best and the industry will assume control of genetic evaluations. Two distinguished gentlemen, Dr. Duane Norman, and Dr. Leigh Walton have agreed to work for NFCA to guide this new organization through the transition period. Dr. Norman and Dr. Walton worked in Genetic Evaluations for several years at USDA, starting in 1970. Both retired in 2011. Go to the following site to look at the background of the NFCA and the agreement with ARS and the CDCB.:

The American Milking Shorthorn Board is happy to announce that Cory Salzl has accepted the position

of Executive Secretary beginning April 1. He brings a strong passion for the Red, White and Roan combined with a breadth of knowledge and experience to the posi-tion. Salzl graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2006 from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he attained his Bachelor of Science in Dairy Science with a minor in Agricultural Business. He has spent six years as the Progeny Test Specialist for ABS Global. He was responsible for the development and management of the progeny test program as well as organizing progeny promotions activities such as tours and progeny photographs throughout seven upper Midwest states. He also served as the

Milking Shorthorn and Ayrshire sire ana-lyst. In addition, he has run his own small graphic design business working with reg-istered dairy cattle breeders and sale man-agers on marketing plans and sale catalogs. Raised on a commercial dairy farm in central Minnesota, he started his own herd of registered cattle in 2002. He is actively involved in the dairy industry, showing and developing his herd, Corstar Cattle Co., with friends and partners. Corstar Cattle Co. has developed two All-American Milk-ing Shorthorns and multiple nominations in the Milking Shorthorn, Red & White, and Guernsey breeds. Salzl is an active member of the Min-nesota Milking Shorthorn Society and the Minnesota Red & White Club serving as a board member for both organizations. He has also been actively involved on national

commi t t e e s for the Red & White Dairy Cattle As-sociation and the Ameri-can Milking Shorthorn So-ciety. Salzl will be working from the Beloit office for the next 3 months and then will be working both from home in Eden Val-ley, MN and the Beloit office. He says, “I am anxious to work with the members to expand the Red, White and Roan and look forward to meeting and talking with every-one in the upcoming months traveling to events, sales and shows.” To contact Cory, call him at the office or email: [email protected]

A 4-H project gone wild is how David Riley’s brother Mark de-scribed David’s journey through

the champion circles with his Unanimous All-American and Jr. All-American Senior Three-Year-Old, Mi-San Acres O Lust ET. What started as a desire to have something different than his three brothers has blos-somed into an amazing adventure for this thirteen-year-old boy. David is the son of Ron and Wendy Riley of Williamsfield, Ohio. A junior member of the AMSS, David said he picked the Milk-ing Shorthorn as his 4-H project because he wanted a different dairy breed to show and develop from his three older brothers. The family farm, once a 130-cow Holstein dairy now boasts a variety of breeds and species. Each boy, as they became showing age, picked a different breed to develop. Mark, David’s 22-year-old brother stated that they have all had some success over the years with their animals, which included Guern-seys, Jerseys and Ayrshires, but David’s cow has truly topped the list. When Da-vid reached showing age and asked for a Milking Shorthorn, Mark said he contacted Michelle Ritschard, who had judged their local county fair the year before and with whom he had stayed in contact. Michelle told Mark they had an off-age Winter Calf that they could look at. Mark recalled, “Dad and I took off and drove up to upstate New York and did an 18-hour round trip to get her.” Mi-San Acres O Lust-ET is a Kuszmar Alfairs Othello daughter from a 3E-92 All-

American dam with records to 26,300M 1026F 794P. Lust’s show winnings in-clude Junior All-American Winter Calf and Reserve All-American in 2009; Reserve Junior All-American and Hon-orable Mention All-American Winter Yearling in 2010; Junior All-American and All-American Senior Two-Year-Old 2011. She has a Kuszmar Megadeth daughter that is bred to calve in June to Huckleberry. David says, “I think she is developing and growing into a good cow and I plan to show her.” He also has a Megadeth yearling bull from Lust that is still on the farm. Lust herself is due in late June to Huckleberry and, “I’m planning on showing her again this season and looking forward to it!” says David. David is a seventh grader at Pymatuning Valley Middle School where he is a guard and forward on the basketball team. At school he is also on the Honor Roll, plays the baritone in the band and is in choir. His favorite class is Language Arts. “My favor-ite author would be Allison Hart,” he says. “She writes animal books and mysteries.” He enjoys reading in what little spare time he has. He’s a vital part of the family farm where everyone pitches in. His mom, Wen-dy, stated, “David does it all, he helps with the milking, feeds silage, feeds all the grain and runs the tractors and skid loader.” They currently have 10 milking head at home along with some sheep, chickens, horses and more. They farm about 35 acres with another 30 acres for pasture. David is also active in the Blooming Val-

ley 4-H Club. Living on the state line, the boys were all active in the club located in Pennsylvania and showed at the Crawford County, Pennsylvania, fair. David enjoys showing and his favorite part, he says, is getting them ready and then being in the show ring. He helps his brothers clip the animals and get them into the ring. Wendy chuckled when she talked about the agreement he worked out with his brother Mark, “David shows in the junior show and then Mark shows her in the open show for fitting

A 4-H Project Gone Wild!

her!” When asked if he did anything differ-ent to get Lust ready for the big show, Da-vid responded that “we took more time to get her ready so everything was just right.” David has two other brothers, Lucas, age 20 and James, age 17. Mark graduated from the University of Northwest Ohio with an ag diesel tech degree. Lucas is studying at the University of Edinburgh. David plans to be a large animal vet someday. Dad, Ron, works for the school as a building aid help-ing challenged children and Wendy spends her spare time screen printing t-shirts for the schools and community functions when she isn’t chasing after or helping the boys. Both Wendy and Ron also spend time in the summer months working for Aloterra Energy. David is looking forward to this next show season. “I like showing at the big shows. It’s real fascinating and amazing at that level. It’s different from the county fair be-cause the cows and competition are amaz-ing.” When I asked him his advice for other Juniors he said, “take your time and don’t get real n e r v o u s about it and go with the f l o w . ” P r e t t y good ad-vice from one so young! It's a family affair with James, Mark, David, Lucas and

their parents.

Successful teamwork between Mark and David resulted in a remarkable journey for the two.

Readers meet the 16-year-old Halie Gru-enwald from Lost Nation, Iowa. Halie is involved in FFA and 4-H and has every intention of staying in the agriculture in-dustry. She is the 4th generation to show-case the dairy cattle at Elron Farms and has been showing the Elron prefix since the age of six. Her family has been in the Milk-ing Shorthorn industry for over 70 years! Currently their farm has 5 cows and 6 heifers. She has been showing at the Iowa State Fair Open Show since she was six years old. Halie was introduced to Milk-ing Shorthorns at the young age of 3 by her grandpa, Elron. At the Jackson County Fair her grandpa would let her show his cows and she has loved it ever since! Her favorite show is the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa because that is where she started showing Milking Shorthorns. She

recalls her grandpa letting her walk in the ring with him. This year she exhibited the Reserve Champion heifer, Elron Megadeth WrigleyEXP, at the Kentucky National Milking Shorthorn Show, along with win-ning Champion heifer at the Iowa State Fair and Jackson County Fair. Halie’s most memorable moment of showing was when her grandpa and Cousin Linda took her to Kentucky for the North American Inter-national Livestock Exposition. She loved watching the shows, meeting new people, and being with the cows. While attend-ing various shows, her favorite activity is getting the cows ready for the show and spending time with them. Above prepping the cattle and quality time with them, her favorite day is show day and showing her cattle. Congratulations to Halie on a great show season!
