Issued under the auspices of the Reserve Bank of Australia from 1960 to 1965, and carrying the Coombs/Wilson signature combination, this astounding 8-note presentation was secured from one of the most unusual hoard finds of recent times – the Great Bookie Hoard. Compiled during the 1950s and 1960s by an obviously successful country bookmaker – if the size of his stash was anything to go by! – this sensational hoard comprised a treasure trove of predecimal notes. Portugal colonised Brazil in 1500, with the South American territory ultimately proving to be a rich source
of material wealth for a country that was,
during this period, a major player in European
politics. The Portuguese coins before you are a case-in-point, with all four types on offer struck in Brazil from
South American silver. As with the coins
of Spain, such as the 8 Reales, the coins of Portugal were accepted worldwide for trade during the 18th and 19th centuries. With
a wide variety of coins circulating in
the colonial economy – from Spain, India, England,

as reliable currency in early Australia.
