First Melbourne Shield Sovereign! As scarce as it is historic, the fi rst, low-mintage Melbourne

Mint Shield Sovereign is a landmark Australian currency

issue – highly sought after regardless of the grade.

Victorian authorities had agitated for a mint for many

years following the 1850s Gold Rush, with Britain fi nally

consenting to the proposal in 1870. Choosing to strike both

St George and, as here, Shield Sovereigns, the Melbourne

Mint’s fi rst sovereign date proved to be the lowest mintage

issue of the entire Sydney Mint/Melbourne Mint 1871-87

Young Head Series! With the combined mintage for the

Melbourne Mint’s 1872 St George and Shield Sovereigns just

748,000, and a large if unknown number either dispatched across the Empire or lost

to the melting pot over the 140 years since

issue, the 1872M Shield is missing

from many collections.

Among the highest cataloguing dates of the 7-year series, distinguished by the memorable portrait of Queen Victoria by Sir Jeremy Boehm and the timeless beauty of Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George & the Dragon reverse, we have just a few examples of the 1887S Jubilee Sovereign available – graded Fine to Very Fine.

Struck exactly 87 years ago at the Sydney Mint, and undeniably scarce in top grade, the 1925S Sovereign represents a unique opportunity for collectors. The penultimate date in the 1855-1926 Sydney Mint series, with the Mint closing its doors in 1926, the 1925S is the ONLY 1920s Sydney Mint Sovereign that most collectors can realistically expect to add to their collection.

Following the global economic crisis triggered by WWI, the use of sovereigns as circulating currency ceased, and from the 1920s, the coin was chiefl y employed in international commercial transactions.

The Sydney Mint converted a huge, if unknown, number of sovereigns to bullion in the 1920s, and all dates bar the 1925S are extremely rare and very expensive. With the 1920S worth A$1,100,000 in Choice Unc, 1921S at A$5,800, 1922S at A$65,000, 1923S at A$45,000, 1924S at A$5,600 and 1926S valued at A$69,500, the 1925S represents your big chance to secure a high-grade Sydney Mint Sovereign from the Roaring 20s.

Representing a unique link with one of the most tumultuous periods of

British history, we have in stock the Silver Half Groats of one of the greatest

medieval warrior kings of England – King Edward III (1327-77).

One of only fi ve English/British monarchs to have

ruled for more than half a century, Edward III reigned

exactly fi fty years from 1327 to 1377. Edward III was

placed on the throne at the age of 14 after his father,

Edward II had been murdered by his wife and her

lover. This gave the young King an early appreciation

of the diffi culty for a monarch in maintaining power.

Edward obviously learnt his lesson well, as his reign is

one of the longest recorded in English/British history.

Encompassing a fascinating period of English history,

Edward’s reign witnessed the start of what would

become known as the Hundred Years War, the Black

Death (1348-50), the development of Parliament

– and the formal change of the national language from

French to English!

Worth twopence, these handstruck Silver Half Groats

were issued during the latter part of the king’s reign,

with Edward III having re-introduced denomination

following the great coinage reform of 1351. Bearing

the familiar Longcross design on the reverse, based on

the Silver Penny, the obverse of the Half Groat features

a fi ne facing portrait of the King, surrounded by a

tressure of arches.

William Wallace, Edward’s time

the restoration of Royal

authority, signifi cant reform of

the legal system and a major

improvement in the coinage of

the realm – as illustrated by

Struck at the mint in London, and

therefore part of a numismatic

heritage that stretches from before

the time of William the Conqueror

to the modern era, these superb

silver pennies are all in strong Very

Fine condition, with an excellent,

characteristically medieval portrait

of the king found upon the obverse.

One of the early Plantagenet kings,

originally placed upon the throne

in 1216, the reign of Henry III was

dominated by his battle with

the barons – a battle that led to

civil war. Henry lost power in

1264 to Simon de Montfort as a

result, but regained it two years

later, and reigned until his death

in 1272.

Struck toward the end of his time

in power, the pennies before you

are among the fi rst of the Longcross

coinage, with the cross on the

reverse extended to the edges of

the coins to prevent the practice

of clipping. Featuring a strong

portrait of the King, each coin is

Great-Grandfather of William the Conqueror! Part of the Fecamp Hoard, an astonishing cache of medieval silver buried in western France circa 977AD and discovered nearly 1,000 years later in 1963, we are delighted to offer the coins of Richard the Fearless (933-96) – ruler of Normandy, and great-grandfather of the fi rst English king, William the Conqueror.

The Coins…Struck at the Rotomagus (Rouen) mint, these superb Silver Deniers of Richard I are some of the fi nest French medieval silver coins we have presented to our clients – if not the fi nest. Measuring approximately 21mm in diameter, and defi ned by strong detail in the designs and a lovely light toning, the few coins available are virtually ‘as struck’, and have been conservatively graded at Very Fine. Beyond the quality, the beauty and the rich hoard provenance, the coins of Richard I found at Fecamp are highly desirable due to his important place in the lineage of the rulers of England.

The Connections…The grandson of the founder of the Norman duchy, the Viking chieftain Rollo, Richard the Fearless was thrust into power upon the murder of his father in 942.
