our Servicestoday in the workshop we have two qualified jewellers, Matthew and Michael, who’s expertise and experience allows us to offer our customers a full range of jewellery repair services in-house, including chain repair, clasp replacements, jewellery restoration, cleaning, rhodium plating, ring resizing and stone re-setting. every item that is left with us is treated with the utmost care and attention, and all items are assessed individually by our goldsmiths before any work is carried out. only the highest quality precious metals are used for repairs and all diamonds and gemstones are sourced from ethical suppliers.

BespokeAside from the usual repairs that the jewellery room carries out they also have a passion for making bespoke jewellery and designing one-off pieces for customers to their exact specifications. If you are searching for something unique that will reflect your personality, individuality and lifestyle, our bespoke jewellery making service can provide that exceptional handmade item, especially for you.

each enquiry starts with an initial consultation. this enables you to meet the jeweller, discuss your needs, budget and ideas and allows the jeweller to know exactly what you envisage. even if you do not know exactly what it is you are looking for, our experienced jewellers can produce some sketches, show you items in the shop that may inspire you and suggest designs that you may not even have thought about.

once the foundations are established and you and the jeweller are happy that each knows what the other needs then the design stage can begin. Starting with a hand drawn sketch and an estimate, you can see the design, make changes and alterations and finally agree the price.

once this is carried out, we now have the facility to create a 3D computer render of the item complete with the selected stones and metals used in the design by using CAD (Computer Aided Design) technology in-house.

each bespoke piece, depending on the complexity of the design takes between 3-6 weeks to create. You will then have your very own personally created item of jewellery made with passion and care to treasure forever.

S ince the launch back in 2011 we are delighted to report that our diamond business has flourished and the whole experience has gone above and beyond our

high expectations. We are confident to declare that we are now tHe destination for buying diamond rings.

the way that customers shop now has changed. Gone are the days when customers went from one shop to the next, from salesperson to salesperson, not knowing what they are looking at, who to trust and whether they are making the right choice. the aim of Portfolio of Fine Diamonds is to offer the biggest selection of diamonds possible to our customers with a totally honest, transparent buying experience. Customers can now browse our extensive stock online from the comfort of their own homes or on the go with our new mobile browser where all the information is live. if it is on the website then we definitely have the ring in one of our stores. They can select rings from a collection of over 250 pieces and reserve them to view in store at their convenience. Knowing that your selected rings are available in store will make the experience of buying a diamond ring altogether more pleasurable.

the fact that all the rings are online allows the customer to do their research before they come in. We are finding that a lot of our customers are more educated on diamonds and know exactly what they are looking for which is great, but if you don’t know what you want then we are still more than happy to share all the knowledge we have to advise you on your purchase. After all, it is (hopefully) a once in a lifetime purchase and something that you need to fall in love with forever – second best is not an option for us.

The confidence that we have in our Portfolio of Fine Diamonds stock, that it is the best quality, price and design, allows us to happily say to our customers who are not sure, ‘shop around’. We encourage customers to research elsewhere as we are confident that they will be unable to find anything on the high street to match our stock – shocking for a retailer to say that you may think, especially in this economic climate, but time and time again the customers come back happy with the knowledge that they are making the right decision.

All the diamonds in our rings are certificated by leading independent laboratories and we give you the certificate to prove it. our rings are clearly labelled with the price, carat weight, colour and clarity both online and in the window allowing our customers to make an informed decision, compare rings and shop with all the information they need. What it doesn’t say on the tickets but is clear when you see our rings is the quality of the mounts. We only use the best suppliers and stone setters. the shanks are solid and heavy (you won’t see any hollow shoulders or underweight settings) and are produced in only 18ct gold or platinum. the rings are all polished by hand, even in places not immediately visible, such as behind the claws and under the settings for the simple reason that it makes the diamonds perform to their best ability. even the smallest diamond set on the shoulder of one of our rings is set by hand using a microscope and of course, as with all our jewellery, you get our one year no quibble guarantee.

We are confident to declare that we are now the destination for buying diamond rings. Don’t even think of buying a diamond until you visit us – we are sure you will not find a better range anywhere else.

K nowing the trade and the current market is the key to procuring the best items. our buyers tony Clarke and William Craghill with a combined

experience of over eighty years know when they have found a real gem. With antique pieces, the value doesn’t just lie in the precious metals and the gemstones used – the history, rarity and workmanship is ultimately what sells an item.

there are many recognised eras of antique jewellery, each with its own style and story relating to the fashions, historical events and available materials of the time.

Jewellery made from 1714 to 1830 is from the Georgian period. At this time nature was a strong design feature and we see items depicting flowers, leaves, insects and birds during this era. engraved gemstones and intaglios were favoured and stones such as agate, garnet, turquoise and particularly pearls were all the fashion.

the early victorian era which followed saw designs of a more romantic nature with scrollwork, floral sprays, hearts and bows. Similar gemstones were still popular from the Georgian period but the discovery of diamonds in South Africa in 1867 increased the availability and therefore affordability of diamond set jewellery.

the death of queen victoria’s husband Albert in 1861 changed the fashion for jewellery – the whole country followed victoria’s lead and went into mourning. this latter part of the century brought us sentimental, often religious, jewellery made from black jet or onyx and decorated with enamel.

After the death of queen victoria her son edward and his elegant wife took the throne and so began the edwardian period. Fashions at the time were for lighter, more delicate fabrics, pale pastels, upswept hair and accentuated necklines. Jewellery followed suit, with the trend for necklaces and chokers booming. The use of platinum for the first time allowed jewellery to be lighter, lacy and more intricate with pieces often set with fine diamonds and pearls. The trend also included garland motifs, swags, bows and tassels.

From 1890 a trend called Art nouveau challenged the tight conventions of the Victorian period and used flowing dream-like feminine figures, enamel, moonstone, citrine, cabochon-cut gemstones and freshwater pearls in their designs – blending nature and fantasy. Famous jewellers well known for this style are Rene Jules lalique and louis tiffany.

At this time began the industrial revolution and mass production which affected the whole manufacturing industry. As a reaction to these changes the Arts and Crafts movement began in 1894 when many jewellers rebelled against modern manufacturing and returned to intricate jewellery designs and handmade craftsmanship. these designs were often a simple

pattern with colourful decorations and uncut stones. Both the Art nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movements came to an abrupt end at the start of the World War in 1915.

After the war the Art Deco period began to bring the excitement and vibrancy of the jazz age in to jewellery. Bold colours and shapes were a big influence and geometrical angular designs contrasted the dainty edwardian jewellery of past. Stones were cut into triangles, pentagons and squares. Fine coloured gems including rubies, sapphires and emeralds were often accented by contrasting Pave-set diamonds. Money was no object and jewellers such as Cartier, van Cleef and Arpels were popular with this style.

the Second World War and the Great Depression put an end to the Art Deco period and ended the distinctive fine jewellery eras as we know them. Since then we have seen countless revivals of the previous eras with fashions and trends returning to the traditional.

At Michael Jones Jeweller we are continually seeking fine examples of antique jewellery and silverware to showcase between our northampton and Banbury showrooms. Shown here are some beautiful examples from our ever changing collection.

With antique pieces, the value doesn’t just lie in

the precious metals and the gemstones used –

the history, rarity and workmanship is ultimately

what sells an item.

"When your mission is to fly at 800 km/h less than tWo metres from other team aircraft, you only trust the chronometric precision of the world’s best chronograph."

Frédéric Schwebel ably handles his role in the "slot" position within the Breitling Jet Team, the toughest of them all. When performing with no obvious escape route, mistakes are just not an option. Strapped to his wrist is the Chronomat, powered by the ultimate high-performance chronograph movement, Breitling Caliber 01, chronometer-certified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), an exceptional "motor" entirely developed and built by Breitling. Ultra-sturdy, ultra-reliable and ultra-watertight to 500 m, the Chronomat stands out for its unique design and its incredible concern for details. I don’t often identify with what celebrities have to say about their golden lives and their

equally golden tastes, but at the launch of the TAG Heuer Link Lady earlier this year American actress Cameron Diaz struck a nerve. “I have always loved TAG,” said Cameron, TAG Heuer brand ambassador.

“But now with this design I feel it is a very elegant classic feminine design.”

I’m with you on this Ms. Diaz, as I too have always loved TAG Heuer, but have had a niggling feeling that as technically accomplished, razor-sharp designed and cutting-edge cool as TAG Heuer watches are, there wasn’t that one watch that was just for me. Sure I love the chunky square motor-racing inspired Monaco on a python strap or a sporty Formula One at my beck and call, and I am blown away by the technical achievements of precision chronographs capable of timing to 1/1000th of a second. And that new Carrera is very edgy,

but nothing was really singing out to me like the new Link Lady does.

Cameron has taken on her new role as TAG Heuer ambassador with an easy grace and genuine commitment. Known for her rebellious and unorthodox approach to stardom she has never taken the easy path but hunted down risks and enjoyed the challenge. She is no glamour puss, purring vacuous inanities, but a feisty California girl who has managed her career and life with a steely resolve and sweet dimpled smile.

Her rst big role was in the whacky and hugely successful ‘The Mask’ (1994) alongside Jim Carey. The lm propelled her to fame, but then instead of taking on high pro le, predictable, mainstream roles, Cameron chose to star in quirky, smaller budget, indie lms such as ‘The Last Supper’. She then mixed it all up with blockbuster hits like ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’, ‘There’s Something About Mary’, ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and the edgy ‘Bad Teacher’, all strong roles that have assured her stardom and permanent membership to the Hollywood hall of fame.

Let’s look rst at the design of the watch that according to Diaz, my new favourite watch critic, is: “very sensual, it’s very sexy, I feel that it’s not just a watch but one of my favourite pieces of jewellery.” Well said because the fact that this new watch feels more like a bracelet than a technical instrument on the wrist is, I think the key to its success. These beautiful slinky watches bene t from the very best design talent as well as mechanics worthy of the most demanding F1 driver and will withstand the hardest serve a Wimbledon champion

choice, and lots of it, the watch is available in a wide range of metals, from plain stainless steel to an

ultimate. And there are several versions with a mother of pearl dial, which

is particularly feminine or in a choice of colours from pastels to

deep mauve etched with swirling waves of ‘S’ shapes that glint and gleam in the light.

TAG Heuer’s aim was to create the most beautiful watch for women

and the curves of her body are what inspired the design. The new Link Lady is slimmer and more curved than earlier models making it silky smooth against the skin. The rounded links of the bracelet ow around the wrist like water and catch the light with each movement. Simple they may seem but each link is carefully built to ensure the bracelet is as supple and easy to wear as a bracelet. The ‘S’ shape links lead to the case that is as smoothly rounded as a river pebble.

Recalling her visit to TAG Heuer’s watch manufacturing complex in remote and mountainous La Chaux-de-Fonds. “I am amazed by the level of precision watch-making requires. I admire the focus these people can hold all day long, working on such tiny pieces to build movements and watches. Watchmakers work on the most precious thing in the world: time,” said Diaz.

At this event in March 2012, Cameron Diaz was announced as TAG Heuer’s new ambassador and in particular associated with the launch of the Link Lady and her three-year association with the watch brand. Her partnership with TAG Heuer will also bene t and raise awareness for programs that empower women, including ‘UN Women’. “I am deeply appreciative that TAG Heuer shares my desire to support women who are not free to pursue even the most basic goals, simply because of their gender,” says Cameron Diaz.

Diaz feels she shares values with TAG Heuer: “Throughout my career, I have been very selective about aligning myself with brands. I love the fact that TAG Heuer challenges the rules and thinks outside the box and I’m honoured to be associated with such an iconic and forward-thinking brand.” And TAG Heuer, I am sure are very honoured and quite a bit excited to be working with the coolest chick in Hollywood.

Part Repairif your watch is in need of a little more tlC we can assist you with this too, as some faults with a watch can be fixed with just a part repair. Whether it is a new glass or new crown, we are always happy to take a look. each repair is treated with the utmost care and assessed individually by our watchmakers before any work is carried out. We only use genuine branded watch parts which we obtain direct from the watch houses, giving you peace of mind that every single part of your watch is authentic and of the highest quality.

our Services

Battery replacementthe most common fault that you will find with your watch is that the battery has run down. With the average watch battery lasting approximately two years, we see a lot of watches coming in to us for battery replacement. this has allowed us to become experts without being complacent. When you bring your watch to us for the battery to be replaced the work will be carried out by one of our three fully trained watchmakers on the premises. if it is a waterproof model we will also carry out a pressure test and, if necessary, full replacement of the seals to ensure it remains waterproof. We aim to provide the very best service – most battery replacements and pressure tests can be carried out by our watch makers within one hour (excluding Breitling) and come with a 12 month guarantee.

Refinishingif you are looking to restore the appearance of your watch, perhaps for a special occasion or if it is just looking a little tired, why not consider a full refinish of the case and bracelet? Our watch technicians are highly skilled in the art of refinishing stainless steel, gold or mixed metal watches. each watch is polished by hand using a combination of polishing wheels and mops, resulting in the removal of most scratches. if your watch is a mixture of brushed and polished links, rest assured our trained technicians have the skills to carefully restore this effect by masking off certain parts of the watch and applying different finishes in turn. The end result is a watch looking as good as new, usually carried out within one week.

ServicingSometimes, a full service or overhaul is the only thing that will get the watch going as it should. our watch workshop is able to carry out servicing on most watch brands to the specification of the manufacturer and with the exact same price and guarantee. We are very proud to be accredited to service your watch in-house by some of the best watch houses in the world, including Rolex, Breitling, omega and Cartier to name a few. When you leave your watch for a full service our trained technicians will first dismantle the movement by stripping down its internal individual parts in order to assess each one. Where necessary, broken or worn parts are replaced and the entire movement is cleaned. the cleaning process is carried out in several stages using various chemicals, steam and ultrasonic techniques to get the parts ready to be reassembled. As our watch technicians

carefully rebuild the movement, the necessary parts are hand-oiled and quality controlled to ensure perfect working order. the movement of the watch is then adjusted to get the timekeeping just right. in the meantime the case and bracelet are refinished , the glass refitted and the watch resealed. A number of tests are undertaken to ensure that the watch passes its required pressure test before it is carefully put back together. One final test, carried out for seven days, ensures that your watch leaves us in perfect condition with a 1-2 year guarantee (dependant on the brand of watch).

We are very proud to be

accredited to service your

watch in-house by some of

the best watch houses in

Sunlight and any artificial light are absorbed through the crystal and dial. CITIZEN uses special filters which allow a wide range of dial colours and styles. A solar cell beneath the dial converts any form of light into electrical energy to power the watch. With regular exposure

to light, Eco-Drive continuously recharges itself for a lifetime of use. Eco-Drive’s revolutionary lithium-ion rechargeable cell stores enough energy to power the watch up to an astonishing 7 years (depending on model) even in the dark.

Citizen are proud to be worldwide leaders in

advanced technology. Today Citizen is the No.1 light

powered watch brand in the world. This award winning

technology can be utilised across a whole spectrum of products,

ranging from Gent’s atomic timekeeping watches, which, like the World

Chronograph A.T are radio controlled to ensure ultimate timekeeping, to Ladies’

Ciena Diamond. With a sparkle white dial and 20 diamonds on the bezel, this

elegant timepiece is the epitome of sheer elegance.

Aligned with the RAF Red Arrows and Royal Marines Commandoes this is a

testament to the build and design capabilities which is supported by a unrivalled

5 year guarantee. Recently Citizen won, for a record 6th time, Watch Brand of the

Year at the UK Jewellery Awards. This is again evidence to how the Citizen brand

is extremely popular with both retailers and consumers alike.

H ere at Michael Jones Jeweller we are fortunate enough to have two highly qualified

Registered valuers on the premises. With a combined experience of over 57 years, both Robert and Melanie are fully qualified to carry out professional watch and jewellery valuations on site.

Melanie and Robert started working for Michael Jones Jeweller straight from school and both learnt their trade working in the shop and service department before completing their professional trade exams to become Registered Valuers certified by the national Association of Goldsmiths.

A Registered valuer’s training is based on many years of experience allied with formal training in gemmology and other specialist areas of product knowledge such as antique silverware and pearls. Constant awareness of the current markets, knowledge of developments in simulated and treated gemstones as well as a broad knowledge of the history of jewellery and manufacturing techniques is also a very important.

there are a number of methods and gemmological equipment we can use during a valuation on top of a vast library of reference material used to identify gemstones and carry out tests. From the fairly straightforward jewellers loupe and microscopes to more scientific instruments such as the refractometer and spectroscope, each piece of equipment must be handled carefully and takes years of experience to master.

When it comes to determining the value of an item there are a number of factors involved depending on the type of valuation needed. the majority of valuations we carry out are for insurance purposes. these are compiled on the basis of what the article would cost to replace (at the current retail value) in the unfortunate event of loss or damage. Where an item is antique or over a certain age, a secondhand replacement value may be provided. this is the document that you would need to provide to your insurance company in the event of a claim.

in the case of unusual, antique or period jewellery the valuers may need to take a different approach as such items are not so easily available or replaced. Further research may be needed such as contact with specialist trade dealers or auction houses in order to obtain an accurate value.

Probate valuations are slightly different and are often needed upon the death of the owner of the goods and are submitted to legal representatives dealing with the estate. the values stated in a probate valuation represent much lower values than for an insurance valuation, and are based upon an open market assessment of their worth at the time of death.

if you are thinking of selling an item, you may need a valuation for private sale, which will provide a reasonable asking price fair to both the seller and buyer. the valuation will take in to account the condition of the goods and other factors affecting the value.

Here at Michael Jones Jeweller our highly trained, approachable staff are always on-hand to help with any queries that you may have with the value of your items or with replacing something you have lost. losing a beloved watch or piece of jewellery is never a pleasurable experience but we will always do our very best to make the whole process as easy and as stress-free as possible.
