    Concept Overview:

Lifestyle changes are important but they need tobe supported by more quantiable aspects, such as

energy use in a home and the embodied energy ofthe built materials.

Changing the layout of a home can potentially shifta users habits, but it is not guaranteed. If successful, lifestyle changes can have a greater reduction in im-pact. However, changes to the materials of the house

are more assured to reduce the impact.

    Better insulation

    Double glaze

    windows

    Use sustainable or recycled

    materials (recycled jeans

    or carpets, dont use steel)

    Smaller houses and

    fewer special-function

    rooms

    Better insulation

    mechanics (electrical,

    water heating)

    Capture suns heat

    (passive - windows)

    Convert suns heat into

    electricity (active - solar panels)

    training for green-collared jobs

I m studying at Hudson Valley

    Community College to become

    a building analyst.

Ill study new technologicalstandards for innovative

    green building programs.

    Interest in green building

    is driven by consumers

    More people are doing

it to save money on their

    heating bills

99 homes last year to at least

564 this yearImprove existing structures or

    start from scratch

Existing homes are going green, too: 68%

of people surveyed by USA TODAY took

steps this year to make their homes more

said it was "mostly to save money" and

26% "mostly to save the environment."

Base Case:A family of four each

taking 20 minute showersonce a day will use over

8 million gallons ofwaterover a 50 yeartime period.

    20 Minutes

After energy use, vinyl sidinghas the greatest impact ofall other built materials.

Behavioral Changes:5 minutesIf a family of four

reduces their showers to5 minutes each, they will

use just a little over1 million gallons ofwater overa 50 year

    time period.

By taking down theparting wall and creating

one shared bathroom, inhabitants might takeshorter showers out ofcourtesy to theirneighbors.

Sustainable Minds canmodel the effects of abehavioral change but nothow the change occurs.

    The Siding in the Grass:

We suspect that otherexterior treatments mayhave an even greater

    reduction in impact, whileproviding benets.

In Sustainable Minds, wood sidingsimpact was onyl marginally lower

    than vinyl siding.

    Whatis yoursiding

worth?Over the lifetime of your house, the vinyl siding alone creates 6850 lbs of CO2

That is like watching 2.5 hours of T.V.

    Future Studies:

The material components of a green wallcould be modeled in Sustainable Mindsbut would not account for some benets

We speculate that a greewall may add environmenta

    benets, such as improvin

air quality and reduction oheating through increaseinsulation of the house

There may also be sociabenets, which cannot bmeasured in Sustainab
