Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend

Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug

dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Mocha Girl Navidad: While I

was not the biggest fan of Morrison's style in this novel,

I did fully appreciate the dagger-sharp insight that she

brought to the color caste system that is so prevalent in

African-American culture, even today. Her dialogue

rang so true, I could hear it coming directly out of my

mother's mouth, my grandmother's mouth, and those of all of the women who've ever filled our kitchens with raucous communal fun and glum

communal tragedy alike.

Mocha Girl Classy: Albeit hard to read some parts, I am really glad I finally read this book.

Mocha Girl Sharnise: Wow! This was tough to get through. Glad I finally read it though.

Mocha Girl Page: Damn. That was one hell of an ending.

Zombie horror hasn't been a genre I've spent any time exploring. But I absolutely loved this book. From the origins of the zombie plague,

to the five main characters individual predicaments to the

resolution, I found the story very interesting and a bit frightening.

Melanie was hard not to like. Justineau was easy to sympathize for. Caldwell was easy to dispise; Gallagher easy

to pity. And Seagrnet easy to hate, then understand, and then like. The balance of gore,

character introspection and plot blended together really well. I especially liked how the narration switched from character to character without deviating from the plot, but gave it more color

with each characters distinct point of view. I really enjoyed this book and would reccomend it to anyone who loves the genre or at least wants to give it a go. Has made me curious what else is out there. Perhaps I should try The Walking Dead...
