The O-1 in this size range is characterized by good machinability, smooth finish as well as superior dimensional stability and excellent hardening characteristics. We recommend it for use in dies, tools, parts, and punches. Excellent for general use in the shop.

HarDeNING: Heat slowly to 1475° F. - 1525° F. If a controlled furnace is not available, use 1500° Tempilaq. Hold at this tempera-ture for a few seconds then quench in a light quenching oil.

temPerING: Temper immediately. The following hardness table is for a one hour draw after oil quenching at 1500° F.

For spring temper, draw at 650°-750° F. for 15 minutes. You can use a conventional kitchen oven for some tempering.

A fine-grained, commercial quality steel, W-1 can be used for tools, parts, dies or punches which require great hardness and a tough inner core for maximum strength. The sizes we carry should meet 99% of all requirements for pins in guns.

HarDeNING: Heat the part to 1450° - 1500° F., or slightly higher (up to 1600° F.) if unusual depth of hardness is required. If a furnace is not available, use 1450° Tempilaq. Hold at this temperature for a few seconds, then quench in an 8% brine solution. Do not use fresh water! To make a brine solution: Add 3/4 lb. (340 g) of rock salt to one gallon of water.

temPerING: Temper immediately. A one hour draw at the fol-lowing temperatures will produce hardness on the Rockwell C scale as follows:

For spring temper, draw at 650°-750° F. for 15 minutes. You can use a conventional kitchen oven for some tempering.

HoW To MAKE A FLAT oR “V” SPRING The following method of spring tempering was the lifelong trade secret of John Frazier, Master Gunsmith of Chariton, Iowa. Of some 3,000 plus springs he made during his career, he knows of only three that broke. Heavy “V” springs are best forged and finish-filed, then ground to shape. Be SURE all lines are absolutely true and all tapers are similar to a “buggy whip”. Beyond the end of the taper of one leaf, leave part of the original steel attached. Hold the spring by this while hardening to prevent the heat bleed-off caused if the spring itself were held with pliers. In a dark or unlighted corner of your shop, heat the spring until it just shows red color and quench. Now grind to exact shape and dimensions. Next, take a quart tin can and pound an indentation in one side, deep enough to hold the spring. Place the spring in the indent and cover it with motor oil. Set the oil on fire and let it completely burn up. Then throw a handful of dry lime over the spring to “keep it dark” for a couple hours. The spring in now properly tempered. As John puts it: “You either have a spring or you don’t. A complete compression in your vise will darned soon tell you!”

Cures the “ramp slips just as the solder melts” problem with a pointed, spring-loaded plunger that keeps con-stant pressure on the ramp or a .45 sight. Adjusts for height, angle and amount of spring pressure. Non-marring, “V” block base centers barrel under the plunger.

WHAT DO I NEED TO POLISH GUNS?Here’s a quick look at the basic supplies for polishing guns.

BaSiC eQUiPMentFirst, you need something to turn the wheels. You can use salvaged elec-

tric motors from a variety of machinery but we like the 1800 RPM BALDOR BUFFER - It’s the number one choice of professional bluing and plating shops. The long shafts get the wheels away from the motor body for good clearance. As in cars, more horsepower is always better. It lets you turn a bigger wheel which has a higher surface speed and, therefore, polishes faster.

You can bolt the buffer directly to a bench or table but that can limit ac-cess around the wheels for odd shaped objects. Our choice for a rock solid mount would be the BALDOR BUFFER PEDESTAL.

6" or 8" STITCHED MUSLIN POLISHING WHEELS - The workhorse wheel of polishing. Use for cleaning and/or roughing with the coarser grits. You’ll need three wheels per grit (glue them together with Elmers, etc.). Power the 6" with 1⁄2 hp motors; a 3⁄4 or 1 hp will turn the 8" nicely.

6" or 8" LOOSE MUSLIN POLISHING WHEELS - Softer touch for that final polish with the finer grits. The 90 ply wheel is wide enough for most work without stacking.

POLiSheSOf course, you’ll need polishing compound and our POLISH-O-RAY™

greaseless polishing compound is made with uniform, screened, mesh size grit for very best results. Except for mirror finishes and aluminum work, P-O-R will do it all.

For mirror finishes on steel and soft metals like aluminum and brass, our grease-base, NO. 555™ POLISHES are the best choice. Far easier to work with than tripoli and rouge.

aDDitiOnaL heLPFUL tOOLSWhen you first mount the new wheels, they will be out of round. In that

condition they won’t “take” compound evenly and will bounce when you touch the work to them. True them using the BUFFING WHEEL RAKE. As you polish and remove metal, the wheel surface will load up with metal particles and quit cutting efficiently; clean it and get it ready for fresh polish using the POLISHING WHEEL CLEANING BRICK.

Precision lathe arms for pol-ishing barrels are machined from high-grade billet aluminum, so they won't crack and fail under heavy use. Delrin centers have O-rings to prevent them from falling out of the inner-bearing race. Centers are beefy enough to withstand extensive use, and ex-tra material on the taper side allows them to be resurfaced. Made from the finest quality steel, selected for its proven ability to withstand hard use, then heat-treated to three distinct hardnesses. The character end is hardened to Rc 62 to prevent chipping. Hammer end is crowned and hardened to prevent mushrooming, and the center is hardened to transmit the hammer blow. Each stamp is individually inspected and marked with index on thumb side so you’ll always know which way the character is facing.

Gun BluingWHY GUN BLUING?

No other activity or line of work in a gun shop or sporting goods store teaches the mechanics of a gun better than bluing. To reblue a gun, you have to com-pletely dismantle it piece-by-piece, and each of the hun-dreds of varieties of guns has its own peculiarities. After you have handled so many guns, the whole theory of a gun’s mechanical operation becomes ingrained in your mind, never to be lost. Further, continued handling of the more popular guns soon leads the gunsmith to know, almost automatically and without looking, which parts are worn and need to be replaced.

There is also a money-making feature—not only is bluing fairly profitable, but it also gives the dealer or gun-smith an opportunity to become better acquainted with his shooting customers. Nothing pleases a gunnut more than a gunsmith making his favorite gun look like new. As a result, he is inclined to return to the gunsmith who worked such miracles—for bluing does seem to be magic for the uninitiated. So as sights and scopes, slings and gun cases are needed, the sportsman not only buys from the man who did up his gun, he brings his friends along, too.

The original cost of setting up a bluing shop is not great, nor is it necessary to buy a lot of stuff. Bluing tanks, burners, some bluing salts, cleaner, polish, some wheels—and you’re in business. From then on buy as you need. Don’t buy unless you do need.

So far as bluing salts are concerned, we make no claim that our salts are superior to anyone else’s. We do have Bureau of Standards reports that prove some salts claimed to be as good as ours simply aren’t. But let us not kid anybody: there are lots of other bluing salts on the market about as good as ours. We feel we are selling bluing salts to gunsmiths who know their business, to sporting goods dealers and shooters who are past the “sucker” stage. Why should we insult their minds with a bunch of hooey?

The proof of any pudding is in the eating. We guar-antee you to be satisfied on a money-back basis. What more should be said?

So, on to business. The quality of a good blue job depends entirely on the gunsmith doing the bluing, not on the salts. If you have a gunsmith who will do a mas-terful piece of polishing, with all surfaces true and bright, corners sharp, without funneled screw holes or ground-off screw heads—if he is careful to clean the gun properly before bluing—if he will follow the instructions that go with anybody’s salts—well, he’ll get bluing jobs that are out of this world.

Because of our constant association with many thousands of gunnuts, gunsmiths, gun dealers, and man-ufacturers in the bluing business, we feel we can give you the service you deserve. If we can’t after all these years, better we should go to selling raincoats and straw hats!
