Messiah Lutheran Church
Welcomes You to the Lord's House
"Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name."
Psalm 100:4
2
Welcome to Messiah! Whether you’re a member, a returning guest, or maybe
this is your first time at Messiah, we welcome you to this time of worship. During
our time together, we hope that you experience the presence and love of God in
a profound and life-changing way! May the music we share stir you, may the
prayers we offer comfort you, and may the proclaimed Word of God challenge
you to live with a new passion and purpose. Again, we are honored that you
have chosen to worship here today. Let’s give God all glory and praise.
First-Time guests, we invite you to look through the “Welcome to Messiah”
brochure found in the attendance card slot on the pew in front of you. If you
have any questions, please talk to an usher.

Once we enter God’s House, we pray that our hearts are changed, and that His
perspective becomes ours; that we release the cares of this world, and bask in the
beauty of His holiness; that we give Him whatever burdens our heart, and find
the Spirit’s peace that passes all human understanding; that we learn more about
Jesus through His Word, and the joy that comes from a closer walk with the Lord.
If music is being played, we invite you to open the Bible in front of you, and focus
on His Word, or spend time in quiet prayer.
If a song is being sung, words are provided on the screens at the front of the
sanctuary. We invite you to sing along, or meditate on the song’s message.
O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You;
my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your power and glory.
Because Your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You.
So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name I will lift up my hands. Psalm 63:1-4
Luther's Morning Prayer
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have
kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this
day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into
Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel
be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

THE GREETING
THE OPENING SONG “He Reigns”
THE INVOCATION
P: We celebrate today in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
We live in a world filled with uncertainty, and much of this uncertainty is so personal. Who we are and what it is that gives our lives identity, meaning, and purpose go to the very heart of the questions for our times. Today, Paul reminds us that we belong to the Lord. Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Being the Lord’s own is what shapes our self-understanding and defines how we relate to one another. All the things that divide us on earth and how we are tempted to identify ourselves by preference or desire are overcome by the Lord, who suffered for us, died to save us, and lives to set us free. This love makes it possible for us to see others as our brothers and sisters in Christ. P=Pastor C=Congregation In the Invocation, we "invoke" God’s presence by repeating the name in which we were baptized by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

It's the song of the redeemed rising from the African plain.
It's the song of the forgiven drowning out the Amazon rain.
The song of Asian believers filled with God's holy fire.
It's every tribe, every tongue, every nation-
A love song born of a grateful choir. It's all God's children singing:
Chorus: Glory, glory, hallelujah He reigns, He reigns!
It's all God's children singing
Glory, glory, hallelujah He reigns, He reigns!
Let it rise about the four winds, caught up in the heavenly sound.
Let praises echo from the towers of cathedrals
To the faithful gathered underground.
Of all the songs sung from the dawn of creation,
Some were meant to persist.
Of all the bells rung from a thousand steeples,
None rings truer than this-It's all God's children singing (Chorus)
And all the powers of darkness tremble at what they've just heard,
'Cause all the powers of darkness can't drown out a single word.
When all God's children sing out-(Chorus twice)

THE CONFESSION OF SINS
P: Let us confess our sins to God, confident of His grace and forgiveness to all who are penitent.
C: I confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven and
to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned in thought, word,
and deed by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous
fault; wherefore I pray God Almighty to have mercy on me, forgive
me all my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen.
P: The almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon, forgiveness, and
remission of all your sins. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and
ordained servant of the Word, I announce the grace of God unto all of
you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I
forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: O Lord, You have rescued us from our bondage to sin and given us a new
life and identity in Baptism. Grant us Your grace that we live in peace with
all people and show to those around us the same forgiveness that You
have shown to us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C: Amen.
THE FIRST LESSON Genesis 50:15–21
15When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It
may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we
did to him.” 16So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father
gave this command before he died, 17‘Say to Joseph, Please forgive the
transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.’
And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of
your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? 20As
for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it
about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. 21So do
not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted
them and spoke kindly to them.
In the Confession, we bare our souls before the Lord, admitting our sins and accepting responsibility for the harm they caused in our relationships with God and with each other. (1 John 1:8-9; Rom. 3:23) The pastor then speaks God's Word to give the forgiveness Jesus won for us on the cross. (John 20:23) In the Collect, The pastor and congregation greet each other as the angel greeted Mary at her annunciation. (Luke 1:28) The phrase also indicates the special relationship between the pastor and the congregation. The First Lesson is taken from a book of the Old Testament, and is found on page 44 in the pew Bible. It coordinates with the Gospel Lesson. A pattern of Scripture readings for each week of the year comes from the Old Testament. Jesus also kept this practice.

THE EPISTLE LESSON Romans 14:1–8 1As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak
person eats only vegetables. 3Let not the one who eats despise the one
who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one
who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4Who are you to pass judgment on
the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls.
And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 5One person
esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days
alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats
in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who
abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none
of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8If we live, we live to
the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or
whether we die, we are the Lord’s.
THE GOSPEL SONG “Wonderful Words of Life”
THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 18:21-35 21Peter came up and said to [Jesus], “Lord, how often will my brother sin
against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven. 3“Therefore
the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle
accounts with his servants. 24When he began to settle, one was brought to
him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25And since he could not pay, his
master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he
had, and payment to be made. 26So the servant fell on his knees, imploring
him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27And out of
pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow
The Epistle Lesson is generally from St. Paul’s letters, and is found on page 948 in the pew Bible. The Gospel Song may change weekly or the ordinary verse is from John 6:68. We rise for the Holy Gospel as we would stand for Jesus Himself, since the Gospel is His living Word to us. The Gospel Lesson is selected according to the season or festival Sunday of the Church Year, and is found on page 823 in the pew Bible.
Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life;
Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life;
Words of life and beauty, teach me faith and duty.
Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life. Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.
Sweetly echo the gospel call, wonderful words of life;
Offer pardon and peace to all, wonderful words of life.
Jesus, only Savior, sanctify forever.
Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.
Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.

servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to
choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30He refused
and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31
When his
fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and
they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32Then his
master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you
all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33And should not you have had
mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34And in anger his
master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your
brother from your heart.”
P: This is the Gospel of our Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
WE CONFESS OUR FAITH-The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the
Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He
rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right
hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge
the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian
Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE SERMON HYMN “Christ, Our Human Likeness Sharing” LSB 847
We respond to the Word of God with an acclamation of praise, and then by confessing our faith. The Apostles Creed dates from about 75 AD and was used in the instruction of those to be baptized. We are confessing our personal faith. The Sermon Hymn reflects the message for today, as well as stressing the words we just read in the lessons.
7
THE SERMON “How to Forgive” Matthew 18:21
1. Recognize your own forgiveness.
2. Forgiveness is your witness for Jesus.
3. Forgiveness gives you healing.
WE RESPOND TO GOD’S TEACHING “You Gave”
THE OFFERING PRAYER
THE OFFERING ANTHEM “Into the Sea” (It’s Gonna Be Okay)
THE PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION
THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH
P: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people
according to their needs. O God, our heavenly Father, You sent Your Son
Jesus Christ to be the payment for the sins of the whole world. O Lord, hear our prayers.
C: We thank and praise You for Your countless blessings that You shower
upon us daily. We treasure Your steadfast love and care.
The Sermon applies God’s Word to our lives and helps to equip us to fulfill our baptismal calling to new life in Christ. After the Offering Prayer, we ask all of those watching the service on the live stream, please fill out an attendance card. If you have any special prayer requests, you will find a space for this online as well. For those in attendance, there are prayer cards at the welcome desk as you exit the Sanctuary that you can fill out. Thank you.
Lord, I want to be pleasing to You in everything I do,
And I want to love You more, more than yesterday,
More than words can say.
‘Cause You gave Your life, You lived and died for me, for me.
You paid the price, You sacrificed for me, for me,
And now the least that I can do is live my life for You.

P: Dear God, we seek Your grace to strengthen us as we commemorate the
lives of loved ones who were lost on a day of anguish for our country and our world, September 11, 2001.
C: Lord, teach Your children to love each other as much as they profess
to love You. Make us powerful examples to those in doubt.
P: We pray for the churches in America to unify in Jesus Christ and to pray as
one unified spiritual family for America. May Your Church pray for America
passionately, perpetually, privately, and publicly.
C: We pray for God’s power to unify families, workplaces, communities,
and cities in America. By Your Spirit, lead us to forgiveness, reconciliation, healing, and unity.
P: We pray for all Americans to come together as one, living in peace,
harmony and love together.
C: Oh Lord, because each of us is created in Your image, please give us
the courage to stand against all division, denouncing it as evil and
sinful, while simultaneously coming together in unity with all persons
knowing this is God’s will for us.
P: We pray in unity for the security of our nation. We ask You to preserve the United States of America from the forces of evil that are threatening our
lives and our future.
C: God, please strengthen all who are affected by the coronavirus as
patients, caregivers, family members and friends. We take comfort in
the knowledge that our lives are in Your hands.
P: O Lord Jesus Christ, in Your Blessed Sacrament You give us Your body and
blood for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith.
C: As we receive these gifts, help us to make confession of the unity You give in this Sacrament. May all approach Your table with true humility,
so that Your body and blood is received to their good and the glory of
Your holy name.
P: All these things and whatever else You would have us ask, grant us,
Heavenly Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now
lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever.
C: Amen.
THE SANCTUS
Prayer is one of the marks of the congregation gathered in worship, according to Acts 2:42. More prayer requests are found in the Announcement Guide. Please take them with you to use for your prayer time this week. “Sanctus” is the Latin word for holy, and is the name of an important hymn of Christian liturgy. It is sung at the heart of the eucharistic prayer, the prayer of consecration of the bread and wine. The text is taken from Isaiah 6:3, which describes the prophet’s vision of the throne of God surrounded by six-winged, ministering seraphim. This text is also influenced by Revelation. 4:8. The concluding text, "blessed is He who comes.”
9
THE LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those
who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread,
and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples
and said: "Take eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in
remembrance of me." In the same way also He took the cup after supper,
and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all
of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for
the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance
of me." The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you.
THE AGNUS DEI
The Lord's Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught to His disciples and to us in His Word. (Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4) The Words of Institution are a collection of all four Gospel accounts of the Last Supper, based on the oldest and fullest text found in 1 Corinthians 11. The Agnus Dei is a canticle that found its way into the liturgy as early as the 8th century. Following Jesus' baptism, John the Baptist acclaims Him as the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." John 1:36

THE COMMUNION
If you are a guest today, please read page 15 before communing. For those unable to kneel at the communion rail, you are welcome to stand.
THE COMMUNION SONGS “Oceans”
A Prayer Before Communing: Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation, I come to Your table to eat and drink Your holy body and blood. Let me find favor in Your eyes to receive this Holy Sacrament in faith for the salvation of my soul and to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.” John 6:54-55
You call me out upon the waters;
The great unknown where feet may fail.
And there I find You in the mystery, in oceans deep;
My faith will stand.
And I will call upon Your name, and keep my eyes above the waves.
When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace,
For I am Yours and You are mine.
Your grace abounds in deepest waters.
Your sovereign hand will be my guide.
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me,
You’ve never failed and You won’t start now.
So I will call upon Your name, and keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace,
For I am Yours and You are mine.
Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders.
Let me walk upon the waters, wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander,
And my faith will be made stronger in the presence of my Savior.
Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders.
Let me walk upon the waters, wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander,
And my faith will be made stronger in the presence of my Savior.
I will call upon Your name, and keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace,
For I am Yours and You are mine.

“For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.” 2 Corinthians 1:5 A Prayer after Communing– Almighty and everlasting God I thank and praise You for feeding me the life-giving body and blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send Your Holy Spirit that, having with my mouth received the holy Sacrament, I may by faith obtain and eternally enjoy Your divine grace, the forgiveness of sins, unity with Christ, and life eternal, through Jesus Christ, My Lord. Amen
“Come, Worship the Lord”
“Jesus Paid It All”
Come to the Lord, all who are weary.
Come to the Lord, come and find rest.
Come to the Lord, hearts that are yearning.
Come to the Lord, come and be blessed.
For in His presence His joy overflows;
Hope for the heart, strength for the soul.
Chorus: Come worship the Lord,
Feast at His table, taste of His goodness.
Come worship the Lord,
For He is able to lift Your heaviness.
He'll clothe Your heart with the garment of praise.
So let your love song be raised. Worship the Lord.
Come to the Lord, lay down your burden.
Come to the Lord, lift up your hands.
Come to the Lord, life He has given.
Come to the Lord, Savior and Friend.
For in His presence His joy overflows;
Hope for the heart, strength for the soul. Chorus
I hear the Savior say “Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray. Find in Me, thine all in all.”
Chorus: Jesus paid it all. All to Him I owe.
Sin had left a crimson stain. He washed it white as snow.
Lord, now indeed I find Thy pow’r and Thine alone,
Can change the leper’s spots, and melt the heart of stone. Chorus
For nothing good have I whereby Thy grace to claim;
I’ll wash my garments white in the blood of Calvary’s Lamb. Chorus
And when before the throne, I stand in Him complete,
“Jesus died, my soul to save,” my lips shall still repeat. Chorus
12
“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24 The Post-Communion Song is based on the Words of Institution. We have eaten Christ's body and drank His blood. The personal encounter with Christ and His gifts in the Lord's Supper leads indeed to a joyful service to "share the peace, hope, and life with others!"
“Wonderful, Merciful Savior”
THE POST COMMUNION SONG
Oh praise the One Who paid my debt,
And raised this life up from the dead. (sing 4 times)
Jesus paid it all. All to Him I owe.
Sin had left a crimson stain. He washed it white as snow.
Sin had left a crimson stain. He washed it white as snow.
Wonderful, merciful Savior, precious Redeemer and Friend
Who would have thought that a Lamb could rescue the souls of men
Oh, You rescue the souls of men.
Counselor, Comforter, Keeper, Spirit we long to embrace
You offer hope when our hearts have hopelessly lost the way
Oh, we've hopelessly lost the way.
Chorus: You are the One that we praise. You are the One we adore.
You give the healing and grace our hearts always hunger for
Oh, our hearts always hunger for.
Almighty, infinite Father, faithfully loving Your own
Here in our weakness You find us falling before Your throne
Oh, we're falling before Your throne. Chorus
13
Then follows the Aaronic Benediction in which the Lord recognizes us as His people, putting His name on us, and fulfilling all promises in His name. (Num. 6:24-25; Matt. 18:19-20) You are welcome to take this bulletin home with you for devotional purposes this week. If you want to discard it, please return it to an usher. We enter to pray and praise and we leave with a renewed commitment to serve and witness!
THE BENEDICTION
P: The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
The Lord look upon you with His favor and give you His peace.
C: Amen.

As You come to the Lord's Supper, you are affirming with each communicant that Jesus is your
Savior and Lord, that with Lutheran Christians, you believe His Body and Blood are present and
you desire to serve Him as a dynamic disciple in the fellowship of all believers. Our Holy
Communion practice is called "CLOSE" communion, not "CLOSED" communion. "Close"
communion invites all those who answer the following questions in the affirmative. We DO seek
to help each visitor and member, to prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament. If you have
not communed with us before, or if you cannot answer yes to the questions below, please speak
to our Pastor or an Elder before communing.
1. Have I been baptized in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?
2. Do I believe that I am a sinful human being without hope of eternal life except for God's
mercy in Christ?
3. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son and my personal Savior from sin, death, and
the power of the devil?
4. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is personally present in the Sacrament of Holy Communion
with His true Body and Blood?
5. Do I intend, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to live a Godly life?
At Messiah, Communion is distributed in a manner whereby the individual cup, followed by the
common cup, are offered at the same table. Communicants seated in the middle sections of the
Sanctuary proceed to the altar first, standing behind the usher. Then the communicants in the
side sections will proceed to the altar, also standing behind the usher. This will provide a
prayerful setting surrounding the significance of receiving Christ's body and blood.
A wine that has been chemically treated to remove all alcohol and sulfites is offered in clear
glasses in the individual trays. Gluten-free wafers are available at the usher tables in the back.
