Messiah Lutheran Church
Welcomes You to the Lord's House
"Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name."
Psalm 100:4
2
Welcome to Messiah! Whether you’re a member, a returning guest, or maybe
this is your first time at Messiah, we welcome you to this time of worship. During
our time together, we hope that you experience the presence and love of God in
a profound and life-changing way! May the music we share stir you, may the
prayers we offer comfort you, and may the proclaimed Word of God challenge
you to live with a new passion and purpose. Again, we are honored that you
have chosen to worship here today. Let’s give God all glory and praise.
First-Time guests, we invite you to look through the “Welcome to Messiah”
brochure found in the attendance card slot on the pew in front of you. If you
have any questions, please talk to an usher.

Once we enter God’s House, we pray that our hearts are changed, and that His
perspective becomes ours; that we release the cares of this world, and bask in the
beauty of His holiness; that we give Him whatever burdens our heart, and find
the Spirit’s peace that passes all human understanding; that we learn more about
Jesus through His Word, and the joy that comes from a closer walk with the Lord.
If music is being played, we invite you to open the Bible in front of you, and focus
on His Word, or spend time in quiet prayer.
If a song is being sung, words are provided on the screens at the front of the
sanctuary. We invite you to sing along, or meditate on the song’s message.
O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You;
my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your power and glory.
Because Your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You.
So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name I will lift up my hands. Psalm 63:1-4
Luther's Morning Prayer
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have
kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this
day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into
Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel
be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

THE PRELUDE
THE GREETING
THE OPENING HYMN “Holy, Holy, Holy” LSB 507
THE INVOCATION
P: We celebrate in victory today in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen. This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be
glad in it!
“The early Christian Church devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.” Acts 2:42 “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” Isaiah 6:3 We are a "singing church,” so we follow the advice of the Apostle Paul as found in Col. 3:16, to "teach and admonish one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” P=Pastor C=Congregation L=Cantor In the Invocation, we "invoke" God’s presence by repeating the name in which we were baptized by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

THE CONFESSION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS
P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
C: But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our
sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and
unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not
loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as
ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For
the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew
us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your
ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given
His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To them
that believe on His name He gives power to become the sons of God and
has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be
saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all.
C: Amen.
THE KYRIE
L: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.
L: For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
L: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God,
and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord:
In the Confession, we bare our souls before the Lord, admitting our sins and accepting responsibility for the harm they caused in our relationships with God and with each other. (1 John 1:8-9, Rom. 3:23) The pastor then speaks God's Word to give the forgiveness Jesus won for us on the cross. (John 20:23) The Kyrie is a Greek word meaning “O Lord.” It is a cry to the Lord for help and strength. In ancient times, the crowds would shout, “Lord, have mercy” as the king entered their town.
5
L: For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise,
let us pray to the Lord.
L: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
THE HYMN OF PRAISE “This is the Feast”
The church has taken over this prayer to greet its King, Jesus Christ, in the church service. As the people long ago expected help from their king, so we Christians expect blessings from our Savior. In the Kyrie we ask God for those things that only He can give. As we prayerfully sing the Kyrie, we recognize our dependence upon God for the greatest gift of all-the forgiveness of sins. Now, we change from the quiet, spoken word and song, full of humility and repentance, into a song of exceeding joy, because our sins have been forgiven and God’s mercy is on us!
6
When we sing the Hymn of Praise, we join the ranks of the angels in heaven and the militant Christian church on earth, lining up behind Jesus to go into battle against the powers of hell itself. One of the best ways to defeat the devil and his legions is to sing praises to God and proclaim Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, who is now seated at the right hand of the Father in power. “This is the Feast” is based on Rev. 5:12-13.

THE COLLECT
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Almighty God, You have given us grace to acknowledge the glory of the
eternal Trinity by the confession of a true faith and to worship the Unity
in the power of the Divine Majesty. Keep us steadfast in this faith and
defend us from all adversities; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
live and reign, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
In the Collect, The pastor and congregation greet each other as the angel greeted Mary at her annunciation. (Luke 1:28) The phrase also indicates the special relationship between the pastor and the congregation. We call this prayer a "Collect" because it collects the themes of the lessons and puts them into a prayer.

THE FIRST LESSON Genesis 1:1-10 1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was
without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And
the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3And God said,
“Let there be light,” and there was light. 4And God saw that the light was
good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the
light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and
there was morning, the first day. 6And God said, “Let there be an expanse
in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was
so. 8And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and
there was morning, the second day. 9And God said, “Let the waters under
the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land
appear.” And it was so. 10God called the dry land Earth, and the waters
that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was
good.
THE GRADUAL
P: O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
C: You have set your glory above the heavens.
P: Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength
because of your foes,
C: To still the enemy and the avenger.
P: When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
C: The moon and the stars, which you have set in place, P: What is man that you are mindful of him,
C: And the son of man that you care for him?
P: Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
C: And crowned him with glory and honor.
P: You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
C: You have put all things under his feet,
P: All sheep and oxen,
C: And also the beasts of the field, P: The birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along
the paths of the seas.
C: O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
THE EPISTLE LESSON Acts 2:22-28 22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to
you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did
through him in your midst, as you yourselves know- 23 this Jesus,
delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God,
The First Lesson is taken from a book of the Old Testament. It coordinates with the Gospel lesson, and is found on page 1 in the pew Bible. A pattern of Scripture readings for each week of the year comes from the Old Testament. Jesus also kept this practice. The Gradual for Trinity Sunday is Psalm 8, and is found on page 450 in the pew Bible. The Epistle Lesson is generally from St. Paul’s letters, and is found on page 910 in the pew Bible. We may read through an entire book over several weeks.

you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up,
loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held
by it. 25 For David says concerning him, “‘I saw the Lord always before me,
for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; 26
therefore my heart
was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. 27 For
you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of
gladness with your presence.’”
THE GOSPEL VERSE
THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 28:16-20
P: The Holy Gospel according to Matthew, the twenty-eighth chapter.
16Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus
had directed them. 17And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some
doubted. 18And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and
on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
The Gospel Verse may change weekly or the ordinary verse is from John 6:68. We rise for the Holy Gospel as we would stand for Jesus Himself, since the Gospel is His living Word to us. The Holy Gospel Lesson is selected according to the season or festival Sunday of the Church Year, and is found on page 835 in the pew Bible. We respond to the Word of God with an acclamation of praise, and then confessing our faith.
10
WE CONFESS OUR FAITH-Portions of the Athanasian Creed
P: There is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the
Holy Spirit. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit is all one: the glory equal, the majesty coequal.
C: Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit. The
Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Spirit uncreated.
The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the
Holy Spirit incomprehensible. The Father eternal, the Son eternal,
and the Holy Spirit eternal.
P: And yet there are not three eternals but one eternal. As there are not
three uncreated nor three incomprehensibles, but one uncreated and one
incomprehensible.
C: So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy
Spirit almighty. And yet they are not three almighties but one
almighty.
P: So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. And yet
there are not three Gods but one God.
C: So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord.
And yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord.
P: For we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge every person
by Himself to be both God and Lord, so we cannot by the Christian faith
say that there are three Gods or three Lords.
C: The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten. The Son
is of the Father alone, not made nor created but begotten. The Holy
Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor created nor
begotten but proceeding.
P: So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one
Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And in this Trinity none is before or
after another; none is greater or less than another.
C: But the whole three persons are coeternal together and coequal,
so that in all things, as was said before, the Unity in Trinity and the
Trinity in Unity is to be worshipped.
Early in the fourth century, a north African pastor named Arius began teaching that Jesus Christ was not truly God. The Church responded decisively in AD 325, with a statement of faith (The Nicene Creed), which confessed that Jesus is, in fact, true God. Toward the end of the 5th century, another creed was written that delved further into the mystery of the Trinity. Though attributed to Athanasius, a fourth-century opponent of Arius, this anonymous creed clearly came at a later stage in the debate.

2. A nation was started.
3. Human beings were saved.
4. We can find help for our lives.

THE OFFERING PRAYER
THE OFFERING ANTHEM “El Shaddai”
THE PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION
THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH
P: O eternal and unchangeable God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—with the
angels and archangels we laud and magnify Your holy name. By Your
Creative word, You formed the heavens and the earth and every living thing
that dwells upon the earth.
The Sermon applies God’s Word to our lives and helps to equip us to fulfill our baptismal calling to new life in Christ. After the Offering Prayer, we ask all of those on the live stream to please fill out an attendance card. If you have any special prayer requests, you will find a space for this online as well. Thank you. Prayer is one of the marks of the congregation gathered in worship, according to Acts 2:42.
Chorus: El Shaddai, El Shaddai, El Elyonna Adonai
Age to age You're still the same by the power of the name.
El Shaddai, El Shaddai, Erkamkana Adonai.
We will praise and lift You high, El Shaddai.
Through Your love and through the ram You saved the son of Abraham.
Through the power of Your hand You turned the sea into dry land.
To the outcast on her knees You were the God who really sees.
And by Your might You set Your children free. Chorus
Through the years You made it clear that the time of Christ was near.
Though the people couldn't see what Messiah ought to be.
Though Your Word contained the plan, they just could not understand.
Your most awesome work was done in the frailty of Your Son. Chorus
God the Father, light-creator, to Thee laud and honor be.
To Thee, Light of Light begotten, praise be sung eternally.
Holy Spirit, light-revealer, glory, glory be to Thee.
Mortals, angels, now and ever, praise the holy Trinity!
13
C: We praise and thank You, Heavenly Father, for the beauty of Your
creation and all the blessings that You shower upon us daily.
P: We pray for the whole Church, that the message of salvation may joyfully be
proclaimed to all and be heard throughout the earth. May the true light of
Christ’s love and mercy be shown to and seen by those who live lives of
darkness, hate, evil and violence.
C: We pray for all people in every nation of the world, that there may be a
growing sense of respect among all peoples---expanding peace,
security, and well being in every place.
P: We pray for those with special concerns and needs this day. We remember
those who are affected by the coronavirus, as patients, caregivers and family
members.
C: Lord, continue to strengthen them in mind, soul, body and spirit. May
they feel Your presence with them every moment.
P: Dear God, we know that You are not constrained by our troubles. Your limits
are never challenged. There is never a moment when there is nothing more
You can do. God, You work beyond the possibilities we can imagine.
C: Lord, give Your people Your peace that we may shine brightly in a dark
world. Grant us the courage to live faithfully, even in the midst of hard
times. Let our fear of You be the beginning of wisdom rather than
allowing the fear of the world to drive our actions. Show Your mercy
and heal those who are suffering in Your fallen creation. Most of all
Lord, come. Restore the world You have made and make all things new.
P: We also remember our brothers and sisters around the world, who are
suffering persecution for their Christian faith, by those who embrace evil.
Bless them with Your presence, strength and hope, gracious Father.
C: Merciful God, we thank You for using us to minister to Your people in
need. May we always follow Your will in our lives, and obey Your call.
Strengthen our resolve to be Your light in this world.
P: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all from whom we pray, trusting in
Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C: Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER (sung)
C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; (pause) and
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Here the congregation agrees together on earth that it may be done for them by the Father in heaven, as prayers, supplications, and thanksgivings are offered for all in authority and all sorts of human need. More prayer requests are found in the Announcement Guide. Please take them with you to use for your prayer time this week. The Lord's Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught to His disciples and to us in His Word. (Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4)
14
THE BENEDICTION
P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
The Lord look upon you with His favor and give you His peace.
C: Amen.
THE SILENT PRAYER
Heavenly Father, we thank and praise You for the perfect love You show to
us each and every day. Help us to remember the words spoken and sung
today, so that we may face whatever lies ahead for us this week in Your peace, grace, and strength. Grant that we may be vessels of Your divine
peace in the lives of those who need to experience Your love. In Jesus’ name,
we pray. Amen.
THE MATTERS OF IMPORTANCE
THE CLOSING HYMN “Glory Be To God the Father” LSB 506
Then follows The Aaronic Benediction in which the Lord recognizes us as His people, putting His name on us, and fulfilling all promises in His name. (Numbers 6:24-25 & Matthew 18:19-20) The Closing Hymn today is based on Rev. 14:6-7 “Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.” You are welcome to take this bulletin home and use it for personal devotions this week. Otherwise, we ask that you return it to an usher. Thank you!
