Our Business After Five Event Was a Blarney Blast!Blackhawk and the Janesville School District sponsored a Forward Janesville’s “Business After Five,” which is Rock County’s most popular business networking event. Held on March 16 at Parker High School, this fun, Irish-themed evening was fi lled with live Irish music by Ian Gould, refreshments, showcases of student programs – and even some lucky winners of our 50/50 ra e! The ra e money helped benefi t Parker and Craig Closets, valuable organizations that provide local, low-income students with clothing, school and personal items and other necessities.
A Warm Welcome to Lucy Newell-Anderson NEW DEERFIELD DRIVE BRANCH MANAGER/PR COORDINATOR
After growing up in Janesville’s 4th Ward, just three blocks from Blackhawk’s fi rst branch, Lucy Newell-Anderson feels right at home as Deerfi eld Drive’s new branch manager. She and Blackhawk had something important in common right from the start – a passion for the community.
Lucy has been named a 2011 YWCA Woman of Distinction and served as a Forward Janesville Goodwill Ambassador, and she was honored with the 2009 Laborfest Goodwill Ambassador Award in appreciation for her years of service to our community. “Even when I was pushing a broom or didn’t have a certain type of experience, I found that if I put my all into what I was doing, an opportunity would present itself,” Lucy said.
Those opportunities have been wonderfully diverse and adventurous, including leadership roles in manufacturing and retail, as well as a marketing and events position at Boardtracker Harley-Davidson in Janesville and Monroe. She even started her own dream business – Loon Lake Co ee & Deli, honoring treasured memories of her father and family time up north.
But her best job has been raising her 18-year-old son, Bobby, whom she’s proud to call brilliant and kind with a wicked sense of humor. She credits her success to Bobby – and of course, a little kindness along the way.
“You never know what someone is going through, and kindness can make all the di erence,” Lucy said. “I saw that same value in Blackhawk right away. I know customer service can sound cliché, but Blackhawk really lives it. Members absolutely come fi rst here, and who wouldn’t want to be part of that?”
“Blackhawk’s passion for the
community was a huge draw
for me,” Lucy said. “Second to
putting our members fi rst, my
next goal is to keep building
on BHCCU’s remarkable
community work. There’s an
inspiring story behind every
one of these local e orts.”
How Many School Supplies Does It Take to “Cram the Van”?
Congratulations to Our Scholarship Winners!Blackhawk’s commitment to improving the fi nancial lives of our members starts with early milestones – and college is an important one! Recognizing Our Leadership Development Academy Graduates and Their Work
Feeding Our FutureAngela’s group launched the Feeding Our Future snack program in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Janesville. This program gives each child who goes to the Boys and Girls Club of Janesville a free snack every day that school is in session, with the goal of providing more than 12,000 free, nutritious snacks per year to youth in the Janesville area. Feeding Our Future provides children with nutrients they may not be receiving at home and introduces them to healthy foods. The e orts may also help alleviate aggression and lack of attention, which studies have shown to be more pronounced in the brains of children who do not get enough to eat.
Project 16:49Bobbie’s group partnered with Project 16:49, a local non-profi t organization serving Rock County’s homeless teens. The “16:49” represents the hours and minutes between school ending and beginning – a critical time of need. Through the LDA, Bobbie’s team created an Advocacy Committee to help create clear and consistent communication for Project 16:49 (including a quarterly newsletter as of May 2017), worked with Blackhawk to create a checking account available to homeless teens through referral from the School District Homeless Liaison, raised support for the Wisconsin bill that will eliminate work permits for all youth ages 16-18, and helped raise over $3,000 for Project 16:49’s Lip Sync Battle.
First LightJulie’s group worked to ensure that the right local resources would be in place for the First Light program, which is designed to help local police o cers provide crisis assistance in the night until the “First Light” of morning, when more resources become available. While many o cers have paid out of their own pockets to help crisis victims with shelter, food or other needs, First Light instead o ers a voucher program and network that o cers can use to connect crisis victims with the short-term help they need.
GIFTS Men’s Shelter Theresa’s group partnered with GIFTS Men’s Shelter, a Rock County organization that provides shelter and services to homeless men. In 2014, 1 in 211 Wisconsin residents experienced homelessness, and over 1,000 of these individuals were from our Rock County community. To enhance the clearly needed support for homeless men through GIFTS Men’s Shelter, Theresa’s group worked with a local greenhouse to create a landscaped garden area at a permanent shelter location. This area not only provides a place for shelter visitors to grow food and work on meaningful, fulfi lling tasks, but also to relax peacefully.

Part of our Blackhawk mission is “providing our employees with a rewarding career of giving back to our member community.” This includes not only the work they do for members here in our branches, but also the action they take for the betterment of the areas we serve.
In this spirit, we are proud of the four Blackhawk employees who recently graduated from Rock County’s Leadership Development Academy (LDA) Program, which provides a personal and professional empowerment experience for aspiring leaders interested in positively impacting our communities.
Congratulations to the following 2017 LDA graduates, who each participated in a group social service project as part of their program experience. Below, you will learn more about each of their projects.
