My summer sabbatical was filled with

opportunities for learning. One body of work I was

able to explore more deeply was the world of

Hasidic Torah commentary. Heres a Hasidic

teaching for the New Year, from Rabbi Pinchas of

    Koretz (1726-1791):

When a person sees himself as nothing, the decrees nolonger hold sway over him. It says in the Midrash,

On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the Jewish

People becomes a new creation, as it is written, A

people newly created will sing the praises of Yah.

Why should we see ourselves as nothing? Because on

Rosh Hashanah, the curvier the better. That is, we

make ourselves so small that we disappear, and then

we are created anew, like a seed in the ground which

first decomposes, and only then sprouts.

Three elements make up this teaching: a biblical

text, a Talmudic text, and an observation from thenatural world. Each requires some explanation.

The biblical text is fairly straightforward. On the

verse (Psalm 102:19) am nivra thallel yah, a people

created to sing Yahs praise, Rabbi Pinchas

emphasizes the word nivra, created, to support

the idea that the people are newly created for that

purpose. He connects this verse to Rosh Hashanah

and Yom Kippur, our special time devoted to

    renewal and rebirth.

But how does that renewal happen? By getting

small. Thus, the move toward a Talmudic passage

(BT Rosh Hashanah 26b), which considers the

proper shape of the shofar. It teaches that a straight

horn (from an antelope) should be used for

announcing the jubilee, but a curvy horn (from a

ram) should be used on Rosh Hashanah. It seems

that the medium is the message: jubilee is about

walking unbent into freedom, while Rosh

Hashanah is a time for submission, embodied in the

act of bending and taking up less space.

How bent should we be? The Talmud says, the

curvier, the better, and so Pinchas takes the

teaching all the way. We should make ourselves so

small that we actually disappear! Like the seedwhich disintegrates before becoming a new

creation, our work on Rosh Hashanah is to be like

the shofar that bends in on itself to the point of

    vanishing.

And what of the evil decrees? Things that

presented such problems when we were big (in our

minds) have no power when we get smaller. (Think

of the way a good martial artist just disappears in

response to an attack, causing the opponent to fall

out of balance). And after weve reemerged from

our smallness, were someone else entirely, a new

creation in the fullest sense. The plant is not the

seed from which it came, and the person who

emerges from the drama of the High Holidays

renewed is not the same one whose ego vanished

into the undifferentiated Whole. That the decrees

no longer have an effect is a direct result of the

    persons re-creation.

In this season of renewal and rebirth, the staff and

leadership of Temple Mount Sinai and our families

wish you a year that is fresh and new, filled with

growth and reaching toward the light!

    Shanah Tovah,

    Rabbi Bach

Temple wants no one to miss the chance to worship during the Holidays,

or year-round, because of difficulty in attending or special hearing, vision

or mobility requirements. A few of the ways we can help:

Assistive listening devices are available at all services, in both the

Sanctuary and the Chapel. This system provides improved sound

quality through headphones. Receivers are available at the entrance to

each room. Large-print prayer books and programs are also available. Ask an

usher near the entrance to the Sanctuary.

A section of our Sanctuary will be easily wheel-chair accessible during

    all High Holiday services.

Select High Holiday services will be videotaped and made available to

those unable to attend. Call us to arrange for this service.

That All May Worship: Meeting Special Needs

Temple Mount Sinai will offer child care at the following times:

On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur evenings at 8:00 pm in the Zork Library.

On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings, following the Family Services, around

10 am in the Zork Library. This program is for children 11 years and under.

On Yom Kippur afternoon, child care for younger kids (a less-structured program than

our morning activity-based offering) will be available in the Zork Library.

Please call the Temple office at 532-5959 to RSVP for the child care programs.

Following close on the heels of Yom Kippur comes Sukkot, perhaps the most joyfulholiday on the Jewish calendar (indeed, the Torah commands You shall rejoice on

your festival, being nothing but joyful).

We will celebrate with an Erev Sukkot service in our Sukkah on Wednesday evening,

September 22, beginning at 6:15 pm. The Sukkot Morning service takes place on

Thursay morning at 10:30 am. On Friday evening, September 24, we will continue

our celebration of Sukkot, and as a part of that service, well consecrate our newest

Religious School students. The service begins at 6:15 pm.

The holidays continue on Wednesday evening, September 29, at 6:15 pm withSimchat Torah the joyful dancing with the Torah scrolls as we complete the

annual cycle of reading. On Thursday, September 30, the Festival Morning service

for Shemini Atzeret will begin at 10:30 am and will include Yizkor, the recitation of

names of those whove died within the past year.

this mitzvah. The brief service allows us to remember our loved ones wherever

    they are.

This year, our service will be held on Wednesday, September 15 at 6 pm. The

A new year of Lunch and Learn, Rabbi Bachs popular monthly

series, kicks off on Tuesday, September 14. Lunch is served from

11:45 am, and we begin learning together shortly after noon,

wrapping up by 1 pm. Lunch is $10, and reservations may be

made through the Temple office or online.

For the first session of this year, Rabbi Bach will teach on a topic

that is often requested by Temple members: Judaisms conceptionof chosenness. Our point of departure will be a provocative

opinion piece by novelist Michael Chabon which appeared in the

New York Times this summer, along with some of the responses

it engendered. Where does the notion of chosenness come from,

and can we embrace it fully without falling into the trap of feeling

superior? Lets talk about it together!

    by Tobi Purvin

I recently returned from a week in Prescott,

Arizona. I worked at Camp Swift (formerlyknown as Mitzvah Corps) hosted at Camp

Charles Pearlstein. I went to volunteer as

an assistant cook, van driver, carnival

decorator and all around schlepper in or-

der to help the staff, all of whom are volun-

teers, run a camp for underprivileged

    Phoenix children.

Temple Mount Sinai should be very proud

of its past and present MSTY members be-

cause we were once again very well repre-sented. Two of our present MSTY mem-

bers, Maddy Goldfarb and Leah Gluck,

went to camp to be counselors. Seven past

    MSTY members, Whitney Jacobson, the

    camp director ;Bradley Jacobson; David

    Knipp; Donny Holaschutz; Robyn Purvin;

Erin Purvin, the camp social worker, and

Craig Lesser, the camp chef, all worked

hard to help this wonderful camp work.

Craig Lesser gives up his vacation time in

order to work at the camp and feed at least

200 people (campers and staff) three times

    a day.

This is a camp for inner-city children, some

of whom come to camp with no more than

the clothes on their back, (in which case

they can shop at no charge, in Keppies

the camp store, for gently used clothing

and shoes). The children come to CampSwift to have a camp experience that they

might never have without the help of the

    North American Federation of Temple

Youth - Southwest Region. The campers

come from homeless shelters, Boys and

Girls Clubs and school districts serving at

    risk and low-income populations. Many

of the campers come from an environment

where the only meals they eat each day

come from the school meal plans, which

they get for free. Many of the campers are

amazed that they will be fed three square

meals a day, plus snacks. The kitchen does

its best not to run out of food, even if it

means that the camp staff eats cereal for

dinner. Youth Groups from El Paso, Las

Vegas, Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Albuquerque,

Tucson and the Phoenix valley, get to-

gether to raise funds and in-kind donationsfor the camp. The camp serves about 450

    disadvantaged children each summer and

about 100 children during the school

year. The camp is supported entirely by

    donations, grants, and fundraising.

The Camp Swift Foundations mission is to

inspire and improve the lives and futures

    of economically disadvantaged youth

through education, cultural enrichment, and athletic programs. The Foundation also

instills a commitment to social action and

community service to high school and col-

lege students who staff these programs.

If you have any questions about Camp

Swift or you would like to make a dona-

    tion, please contact me at

    [email protected] or 584-2233.

Monetary donations are wonderful but ifyoud like to make donations of gently

used sleeping bags, towels, toiletries, or

just about anything a camper could use, it

    would be much appreciated.

Creativity for PeaceOn a quiet Monday night at Temple Mount

Sinai around 50 community members were

informed, enlightened, and even a little

overwhelmed. By the graciousness and joint

collaboration of The El Paso Jewish Federation,

Bnai Zion Synagogue, and Temple Mount

Sinai, an informative presentation was made

    about Creativity for Peace Camp.

While the majority was unsure what to expect,

the event quickly turned from informative to

sharing the lives and stories of three beautiful

young woman and their mentors. The camps

    Executive Director Dottie Indyke, Camper

Program Director Anael Harpaz, and threeyoung leaders who were former campers

    themselves: Maya Hochstadter, Mai Shbeta,

and Dima Khalifa made us laugh, cry, think,

and most importantly realize how crucial

programs like this are to the future of Israel,

the Middle East, and the world.

As President Obama said in Cairo in 2009, the

Talmud tells us: "The whole of the Torah is for

    the purpose of promoting peace."

Creativity for Peace Camp, located in Santa Fe

New Mexico, is fulfilling the mission of the

Torah by taking young woman out of their

home countries and changing their lives in

order to change the lives of others. As it states

on their website, the vision of Creativity for

Peace is a time of peace when people and

    nations coexist by understanding and

respecting each other. Toward that end, our

focus is on developing the next generation of

female leaders and peacemakers in Israel andPalestine. Our Mission is to nurture

    understanding and leadership in Palestinian

and Israeli adolescent girls and women so that

they aspire to and take on significant roles in

their families, communities, and countries that

    advance peaceful coexistence.

Dottie Indyke spoke eloquently with fervor, at

times having to defend the camps position to

the curious crowd that commented and

questioned all about the activities and

challenging the realistic possibility of achieving

the vision and the goals. However some people

in the crowd thanked Dottie for her selfless

work and for believing in such a strong cause

at such a fragile time in the world.

Although a 501c3 that is completely supported

by contributions from private foundations and

individuals, Creativity for Peace camp has

managed to change the lives of over 140 young

women continuing the wonderful summerprogramming throughout the year in Israel.

Creativity for Peace faces adversity on many

levels from political to societal, but through the

strength of advocating for a brighter future full

of young women guiding their generation and

the generations that will follow to Israeli/

Palestinian harmony, the young leaders and

the staff at Creativity for Peace will continue

their endless efforts changing the world one

    summer camp at a time.

The Mourners Kaddish speaks not a word about death, grief, mourning or loss. At the time of

our greatest grief and sadness, our tradition asks mourners to stand and recite the Kaddish in

the presence of our community so that we affirm life. Through the words of the Kaddish, we

affirm that life is good, that the life of the deceased was good, and that we pledge to go on liv-

ing carrying their legacy with us into life.Eitan Weiner-Kaplow
