Two farewells…

The coming weeks bring two bittersweet farewells.

For four years, Temple Mount Sinai has been a part of Jordana Chernow-Reader’s rabbinical education. As a rabbinical intern, Jordana visited El Paso a few times each year, working in the pulpit and in the Religious School. We’ve watched her grow in confidence and develop her skills as a teacher and leader of worship. This year, her visits took on a different format, as she came late summer and fall (before her obstetrician told her to stay off of airplanes!), focusing on our Face to Face initiative.

Jordana becomes Rabbi Chernow-Reader on Sunday morning, May 16, at a service of Ordination in Los Angeles. She’ll come back to us in El Paso once again on May 28-29, and we’ll have the opportunity to wish her well at our Kabbalat Shabbat evening service and at the Oneg prior to the service.

On June 4, we’ll bid a fond farewell to another religious leader who’s been a bit of a fixture around Temple for a number of years: Rev. John Stowe. Father John and I have team-taught classes at Temple and around town, and worked together on various issues of common interest. His tenure in El Paso was quite lengthy by the standards of his Franciscan order, but the time has come for him to take up new responsibilities in a new setting.

Father John will be moving from El Paso at the end of June, and during a very busy “farewell tour” within the diocese he has served so faithfully, he’s carved out some time to be with us for a Friday evening service. Father John has been a good friend to the Jewish community, and we will miss his presence.

Please be with us on May 28 and June 4 to honor and thank Rabbi Jordana and Father John for their friendship and leadership.

Rabbi Bach

Editor’s Note... Thank you for the feedback on ‘Messages from the Mountain’. As you all can see, when we receive new ideas and new submissions, they are included and incorporated into the format. If you have a submission, it is best to receive it in a WORD document format as an attachment. If you find your self technically challenged, embed it into the text of an email and I will handle it from there. All submissions must be in by the 23rd of each month to be in-cluded in the publication Thanks again, Mark Schrier

What is a sabbatical?

The word “sabbatical” has its roots in the biblical concept of Sabbath (“to rest” or “to cease”). Sabbatical leave is a time for our rabbi to shift gears in order to rest, disengage, study, reflect and travel, in order to return to us renewed and refreshed in body, mind and spirit.

Rabbi Bach’s contract with Temple specifies that his sabbatical leave be every third summer. Its timing is tied to the Jewish calendar, beginning on the day after Shavuot (this year, on May 20), and ending on the last day of the Hebrew month of Av (this year, August 10).

Sabbatical is more than a vacation from meetings, budgets, sermons, and services. It is a time for Larry to receive spiritual nourishment and a change in perspective, to deepen relationships with self, family and friends, and God. It is a season of spiritual growth. This special time will also be a season of growth for the entire congregation.

Do other rabbis go on sabbatical?

A growing number of rabbis (as well as clergy of all faiths) are taking sabbaticals. The trend reflects what the Reform movement has recognized as a new model for rabbi-congregation relationships: a b’rit kodesh, or “sacred partnership.” Rabbis and congregations who care for one another experience fewer instances of burnout and dissatisfaction, and find themselves moving instead from strength to strength.

What will Rabbi Bach be doing on his sabbatical?

The Bachs will leave for Israel on June 6. Part of their time in Israel will be spent leading a congregational trip, while the bulk of the time will find them based in Jerusalem.

Is sabbatical also a time for study?

Yes! Free of the day-to-day responsibilities of the Rabbinate, Rabbi Bach will have time for more extensive reading and writing than usual. His formal study opportunities for study on this trip will include a week-long retreat with the Institute for Jewish Spirituality. Informal study with colleagues and the smorgasboard of study opportunities that exist in Jerusalem on a daily basis will round out the schedule. Rabbi Bach expects that he will return to us in August having tapped new wellsprings for adult learning, sermons, and worship.

Who will serve the congregation during Rabbi Bach’s sabbatical?

Temple’s Sh’lichei Kehillah (“synagogue associates”), Ellen Goodman, Ed Solomon and Tina Wolfe, will coordinate Shabbat services while Larry is away, leading them along with other laypeople. They will also be available to serve members in moments of crisis, including deaths. President David Kern and Outreach Director Susan Jaffee will be “go-to” people within the lay leadership and Temple staff. Finally, Rabbi Weiss will remain, as always, in touch with the congregation.

Some Questions and Answers

Page 8: Messages from the Mountain, May 2010

Page 8 May 2010/Iyyar—Sivan 5770 Messages from the Mountain

Rabbi Bach’s Sabbatical Leave (continued)

Who do I call if I have a personal or family crisis?

In the event of a personal or family crisis, please call the Temple (532.5959). The office staff will know whom to call, and how to reach Rabbi Bach when appropriate. After hours, Ext. 18 of the Temple’s voicemail system will have instructions for reaching key Temple staff and leaders in a crisis.

Will Rabbi Bach be in contact with Temple during his sabbatical?

Generally speaking, no. The point of the sabbatical is for the rabbi to be able to turn his attention elsewhere, so that he can refocus on his rabbinate with renewed energy and clarity. Being wrapped up in, or even aware of, the day-to-day goings-on at Temple defeats the purpose of the sabbatical.

The exception to this rule will be in the case of deaths within the congregation, when Rabbi Bach has asked to be notified so that he may be in touch with grieving families.

Will Rabbi Bach be reading his email during his sabbatical?

No. Our “techie” rabbi needs a sabbatical from email as much as anything else. His email account, [email protected], will not be a reliable way to reach him during sabbatical, and email sent to that account May 19 and August 10 may not be read.

Will the Temple just be in a “holding pattern” while Rabbi Bach is away?

We certainly hope not! Though summertime is generally a quiet time at Temple anyway, we

expect that all of our regular activities will continue and that some new ones may flourish. The sabbatical is really a two-way process. While Larry is on his journey of renewal, refreshment and reflection, we will embark on a journey as well. For Temple’s leadership and membership, the sabbatical period can be a time for reflecting on our mission and renewing our commitment to caring for ourselves. The centerpiece of this endeavor is our full complement of Shabbat and holiday services, led entirely by laypeople. The Board of Trustees will continue to govern, students will continue to learn, and planning for an exciting Fall 2010 will move at a brisk pace.

Who do I call with questions about the sabbatical?

You may speak with Rabbi Bach, David Kern, Susan Jaffee, or our sh’lichim about any aspect of the sabbatical that requires further clarification. They will be able to answer your questions or point you toward someone who can.

WRJ's April Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, held at the home of Lee Schwartz, drew nearly 30 women for a delicious Mediterra-nean-themed dinner prepared and beauti-fully presented by WRJ Board member Laura Brannon-Rosales. The event's food drive campaign was a big success: attendees brought dozens of canned goods and other non-perishable items to be donated to a local food bank. The evening's special honoree was long-time WRJ volunteer Lori Gaman, who has coordinated the always popular Hanukkah cookie fundraiser for 14 years. Scores of WRJ members have enjoyed mix-ing, rolling out dough, cutting out dreidels and stars, baking, frosting, and packaging tens of thousands of cookies over the years under Lori's cheerful leadership -- and have helped raise thousands of dollars in support of Temple Mount Sinai.

Dear Temple Family-

I want to thank all of you who took time from your busy schedules to attend Temple’s Annual Meeting on the evening of Wednesday, April 21, 2010, in the Chapel. We had excellent attendance and it is always very inspiring to see how many of our congregants care so deeply about the success of our Temple. Thank you!

I think everyone who attended felt the meeting went well. We conducted a Perpetual Care Association meeting, passed some important Bylaws amendments, reviewed and approved a Financial Report, heard great talks from several folks who are deeply involved in Temple life (Marci Karch, Laura Tate Goldman, Mark Schrier, Josh Meyer and Ed Solomon), received an inspiring message from Rabbi Bach, and elected Temple trustees and officers. And we did all of that in 59 minutes!

I want to first thank Bernie Lauterbach for conducting a successful meeting of the Perpetual Care Association and congratulate all of those who were elected and who are continuing to serve on the Association Board and the Foundation Trust Investment Committee (Sandi Kahn Carpenter, Bob Krasne, Jay Mendeloff, Edward Schwartz, Mickey Schwartz, Bob Shiloff, Bob Snow and Sue Zaltz). The excellent work of these dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers has been invaluable to Temple year after year. Please join me in thanking them for their service.

I also want to give a heart-felt "Thank You" to our departing trustees (Olivia Chavez and David Mansfield) and officer (Tommy Goldfarb) for their dedicated and effective service on the Board. I also want to acknowledge and thank Nancy Rothschild who ably served as WRJ representative and left the Board some months earlier. We couldn’t do what we do at Temple without the dedication and commitment of our Board and we all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Olivia, David, Tommy and Nancy for their service. Please thank them when you get an opportunity to do so.

I also want to congratulate our new trustees (Susan

May, Mark Schrier and Jane Snow) and our new officer (David Leffman) on their election and for their willingness to serve. Congratulations as well to our re-elected trustees (Rick Amstater, Susie Goldman, and Hal Marcus) and officers (Marian Daross, Greta Duran, Ellen Goodman and Jon Sonnen) and to our new WRJ representative Maria Klein and our new MSTY representative Cheyenne Mickenberg. Please congratulate and thank all of these folks when you see them.

Gratitude is also owing to our continuing trustees (Joyce Davidoff, Lori Gaman, Jack Heydemann, David Novick, Debby Robalin and Phil Rothstein), officer (Shari Schwartz – President Elect) and MRJ representative (Scott Feldt – MRJ President) for all that they have done and continue to do to make Temple successful. Please join me in thanking each of these wonderful folks when the opportunity presents itself to do so.

Lastly, I want to give very special thanks to Marcia Dahlberg who, as Immediate Past President, has been and continues to be a tremendous aide to me personally and a tremendous asset on the Board. Marcia follows in a long tradition of deeply committed and dedicated Past Presidents and I profoundly appreciate all that she does to be of help.

As I said Wednesday evening, we have a great deal to be thankful for at Temple Mount Sinai. We do many things very well and some things with great excellence, but there is always room for improvement. Let’s all work together in this coming fiscal year to go “from good to great” in all that we do at Temple. I know all of you will do your part to make that happen and I thank you for that.

Sincerely,

David Kern

Communication is our Greatest Strength

Face to Face is building its strength by focusing on communication. This effort started in small groups at Yom Kippur and in two person meetings. Our next projects are aimed at im-proving communication within the Temple community. The first project is underway: The assembly and editing of each month’s ‘Messages from the Mountain’. We are now in our third month and have made many improvements and addi-tions to the format and content. At our next meeting we will use the divide and conquer method to make this a labor that is shared. The second project is to publish a new Temple Mount Sinai member directory. We need 3 local businesses (or individuals) to help underwrite this effort. Each underwriter will have a 5 x 8 inch space to provide their message to congregants. Available are: Inside Front Cover, Inside Back Cover, and Outside Back Cover. This is an excellent way to deliver your message to an active and supportive community. The cost to publish and distribute the directory is approxi-mately $1,000. The goal is to have the new directory ready to hand out at the next High Holi-days (to save in postage). For more information or to become a sponsor of the Temple directory, contact Mark Schrier at 584-1671 or [email protected]

Our local Jewish War Veteran's Post #749 is active. The National Jewish War Veteran's project of cataloging our deceased veterans is in progress. Your local point of contact is Scott Feldt, re-garding this project.

The next monthly meeting will be at 11:00 A.M. May 23rd, at Luby's on N. Mesa. All Jewish Vet-erans, active or inactive duty, are invited to attend.

Scott Feldt can be reached at [email protected], or (915) 875-0750.

Face to Face

Attention all Jewish Veterans

This is a “pre-announcement” of Temple’s Phantom Dinner in June. There is no actual date for guests to worry about because the dinner will be entirely imaginary. You won’t have to get dressed up and you won’t have to leave the comfort of your house.

The chefs will be serving an imaginary seven-course meal consisting of cocktails, appetizers, salads, two types of soup, several meat selections, many types of vegetables, and an assort-ment of desserts. Of course, a selection of fine wines will accompany the dinner.

This is Temple Mt. Sinai’s main fundraising event, so please plan to participate. Reservations may be made for individual seats or entire tables. Donors reserving a table will receive a package of gift certificates to local fine dining restaurants.

More information about reservations and the dining gift certificate package will follow in next month’s Temple bulletin.

Annual Congregational Meeting The Congregational Meeting was held April 21, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the Krupp Chapel. All were welcomed by President David Kern and enjoyed an opening D’var Torah by Rabbi Larry Bach. The items covered were:

Perpetual Care Association meeting: Bernie Lauterbach presented the current financial position of the society. Great news, the funds have recovered nicely with the recover-ing economy and balances now exceed the pre 2008 figures.

Susan Jaffee reported on the member life cy-cle changes since the last annual meeting. Our members who have passed away since our last annual meeting were remembered and new members were announced .

Marci Karch shared her experiences in the Gesher program. Marci announced that she will be mentored by Alana Bach as she pre-pares to take on the duties of organizing and continuing this important program.

David Leffman presented the Bylaw changes. All changes were accepted by the members present.

Laura Tate Goldman shared the story of her journey at Temple from a gracious welcome to the decision to convert to Judaism. She mentioned all the mitzvahs and joyous times that make Temple and our community a spe-cial part of her life.

Jon Sonnen presented the financial report. Temple has weathered the financial down-turn in the market, maintained contributions and membership at a sustainable level and controlled administrative expenses. A major-ity of Temple funding is used to support pro-grams and activities of the Temple Commu-nity (over 78%). The financial report was ap-proved by the members present.

Mark Schrier reported on the projects under-way in the Face-to-Face project. Improving communication within the Temple commu-nity is the current focus. Editing of the monthly bulletin and preparation of a new membership directory are the group’s current projects.

Rabbi Larry Bach gave his annual report. His message was one of thanks for the strong financial management and recognizing all who worked within the community to pro-vide all the services and volunteer time neces-sary to keep Temple a strong and vibrant community.

Josh Meyer shared his experiences working with Border Interfaith. He started by work-ing within the Temple community, but felt a need to find a way to make El Paso a better community. For him, that is being fulfilled working with Border Interfaith.

David Kern gave his president’s remarks. Fo-cusing on how much he has enjoyed working with all the officers and staff at Temple. He affirmed Bob Krasne’s assertion that ‘being president is the most enjoyable position at Temple. He thanked all and is looking for-ward to the next year of service. Marcia Dahlberg presented the slate of offi-cers and trustees. The slate was accepted by acclamation. Ed Solomon closed the meeting with a mov-ing prayer. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm

Decorating Israeli flags

Gesher Classes Wrap Another Successful Year at Temple Mount Sinai Gesher is a hands-on Jewish learning program run by Temple Mt. Sinai for children from birth through four years and their parents. This year Gesher met for fifteen hour-long Sunday class sessions and our topics included Jewish holidays and the “What’s Jewish about…” curriculum. Children enjoyed playtime with thematic toys, singing, movement, stories, craft projects, and thematic snacks. In April, Gesher met to learn about Israel and

to explore “What’s Jewish about Frogs and Toads”. We sang and danced, enjoyed a blue and white snack in honor of Israel, decorated Israeli flags, jumped liked frogs, learned how to say frog in Hebrew, listened to stories, and played with our friends. The last Gesher class for the year will meet on Sunday, May 9, to learn about Shavuot, the holiday of the giving of the Ten Commandments. During this class we will learn God’s “Ten God Rules”, read a couple of story books, sing and dance, create a flower project, and snack on dairy food (traditional Shavuot fare).

We hope your family will join us for Jewish fun and learning. Gesher classes will resume in the fall on August 29, and the instructor will be Marci Karch. Gesher is funded in part by the Jewish Federation of El Paso and all families are welcome to attend. Please contact Marci Karch [email protected] or 585-7833 for more information. Asked what this means to her, Leah said, “The culmination of becoming an adult in the Jewish religion means the beginning of the next chapter in my religious life as a Jew. It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to become a woman in my religious faith. I will carry it with pride and pass the Torah onto my children as my parents did to me, so the religious cycle will continue.”

She is the daughter of David and Eva Pearlman, and sister to Giovanna Irigoyen. Her Grandpar-ents are Guillermo Vargas of El Paso, Texas, Bar-bara and Mort Abt of Northbrook, Illinois and Robert Pearlman of El Paso, Texas.

Leah’s Mitzvah project is collecting items for the Child Crisis Center. She is col-lecting items such as diapers, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Her focus is “giving the simple necessities we all take for granted to children who need it the most”.

Her hobbies include volleyball and writ-ing. She has two dogs, a Shih-Tzu named Sandia Renee and a Westy

named Star Gazer.

As an adult, Leah’s dream is to “simply be happy with anything I pursue”. Her three goals are to become an Olympic volleyball player, a writer and a heart surgeon.

Ali Hope Gluck to be Bat Mitzvah May 29th Ali Hope Gluck, a 7th grade student at Morehead Middle School, will be called to the Torah on May 29th at Temple Mount Sinai. Asked what this means to her, Ali said, “I believe that a Bat Mitzvah is not only a right of passage, but it is a time when you begin a new chapter. This chapter en-tails many things and many amazing experiences. A Bat Mitzvah is turning the page from being a child to be-coming an adult”.

Ali is the daughter of Elisa and Brion Gluck, and sister to Leah and Macy. Her Grandmothers are Doris Gluck and Irene Osborne, both of El Paso, Texas.

Her Mitzvah project in-

volves collecting items to donate to the Lee and Beulah Moor Children’s Home. She is also doing

a “spa day” for some of the girls who live at the home.

She enjoys dancing, acting, read-ing, writing and watching mov-ies. Her pets include several fish, a Dachshund named Jack, a mixed breed named Lucy and a blonde Labrador named Lance.

Ali hopes to attend the Univer-sity of Texas at Austin because they offer so many programs that could help her with her career choices. As an adult, Ali would love to teach, write and act.

“It’s a Girl Thing” space is dedicated On April 11th, the “Rosh Hodesh – It’s A Girl Thing” room was dedicated in loving memory of Sandi Troyer Kern. Rabbi led the dedication and blessings, which were followed by a few loving words from David Kern. All of the Religious School teachers were present for this very special dedication. Sandi Kern touched our lives and being in this room filled with pictures of Sandi, her art work, her office furniture and office accessories, we could feel her presence in the room. We are very grateful for the Sandra Troyer Kern Memorial Endowment Fund which will keep the “Rosh Hodesh—It’s A Girl Thing” program in existence and Sandi’s memory alive for many years to come.

Thank you to Debbie Marcus and Randee Mansfield for generously donating several attractive pieces from the Temple Gift Shop: a silver Havdalah set, Shabbat candle sticks, wooden tzedakah box, Miriam’s tambourine, some handsome “Women of Valor” pieces, and a special challah cutting board adorn the newly installed shelves in the “It’s A Girl Thing” room. And thank you to Estelle Goldman for donating one of her beautiful menorah creations which adds beauty to this room. If any of you are so moved, you can help Sandi’s Fund grow, by giving a gift to Temple in Sandi’s memory”. We appreciate your support. Thank you, Grace Bir

Mishpachot Trip to the El Paso Zoo a great success

On Sunday, April 11, five families met at the El Paso Zoo to explore the new African exhibit. We checked out the Zoo’s newest arrivals - the lions and meerkats! The families completed a scavenger hunt and studied Jewish ‘animal’ texts with Rabbi Bach. A fun time was had by all! Mishpachot is Temple’s youth group for children in preK through second grades and their extended families. Mishpachot is open to the entire community. Jewish Women’s Retreat

Join Temple Mt. Sinai for a Jewish Women’s Retreat in the beautiful Sacramento Moun-tains. Take this opportunity to remove your-self from the pressures of everyday life in El Paso and focus on friendship, Judaism, and personal growth. The weekend programming will be a mixture of prayer, adventure, and relationship building. We will stay in hotel-style accommodations at the Sacramento Methodist Assembly Retreat Center.

The theme for our retreat is “creating ritual in our lives”. While we celebrate Rosh Chodesh, the holiday of the new moon, we will explore what it means to create lasting and meaning-ful ritual. We will explore this topic through discussions, study, yoga, meditation, and physical activity. Cantor Robbi Sherwin from Austin will be our spiritual leader for the retreat. Cantor Robbi will lead us in Shabbat blessings, prayer services, and inspirational discussions. This retreat is sponsored in part by the TMS Women of Reform Judaism. Registration forms for the retreat are now available. For more information or to request a registration form, please contact Alanna Bach at [email protected] or 532-5959. Special Congratulations Please join in congratulating Dr. Soheil Nazarian for being awarded "The University of Texas at El Paso Faculty Achievement Award for Research" during the 2010 Honors Convocation.

Dr. Nazarian is the founder of the Center for Transportation Infrastructure Systems (CTIS) with around $2 million of research-expenditures and supporting dozens of undergraduate and graduate students per year.

His outstanding achievements make this a well-deserved recognition which is the highest honor bestowed upon UTEP Faculty.

MSTY News NFTY-SW Spring Kallah was a weekend full of learning, fun and friends.

Six teens from El Paso flew to Phoenix on Thursday, April 8th. Friday morning the event started with the election of next year’s regional board. The candidates for each position spoke about what they plan to do in their positions. Elections were followed by Shabbat evening services and dinner. The evening ended with a group program in which teens shared stories of their involvement in Judaism.

Saturday started with Shabbat morning ser-vices. Everyone chose from different types of services: a bucket list service, yoga service, and a nature service, and a Yom HaShoah service. The bucket list service focused on introspective thinking and prioritizing your life’s goals. The yoga service combined exercise and prayer, and was led by a local rabbi. Music played in the background and matched both the prayer and the exercise. The nature service blind-folded participants and included background nature sounds, including wolves howling. The Yom HaShoah program focused on the tragedy of the Holocaust.

The afternoon was filled with free time to visit and clean up before dinner. Dinner was fol-lowed by Havdalah, and th evening social be-

gan.

The event appeared to be an average party, with a DJ and a dance floor. The theme, “Super Heros,” added a fun twist. Most teens were dressed as their favorite super hero. After dancing for a few hours, everyone sat down in a circle. The seniors entered the middle of the circle. Each senior then talked for a few min-utes about their NFTY experience and the feel-ings of being at their last NFTY event. Sunday morning came too fast, and all said good bye to friends. It was a very emotional time for everyone, especially the seniors. Spring Kallah was over, but every member of NFTY went home to begin anticipating the next event. MSTY updates May 7—local elections for MSTY board—current 8th graders are invited to the event. End of year dinner—current board term will end, and 2010-2011 years will begin—all of MSTY and mini MSTY invited (middle and high school). As we go to press, the date is being set; watch Facebook and email for the final word.
