The purpose of Skylight Opera Theatre, a non-profit, professional

performing organization, is to bring the full spectrum of music-

theatre works to a wide and diverse audience. The Skylight strives to

make a difference in people’s lives through the celebration of the

musical and theatrical arts and their enlightening reflection of the

human condition.

This has been a year of great excitement, artistic success and continued, impactful involvement in our community, particularly in our challenged MPS partner schools. Un-doubtedly, it all has been made possible through the sup-port of loyal patrons and donors like you. Of course, as quickly as one season comes to an end, we are already hard at work gearing up for the new season ahead and, in fact, planning future seasons to come.

Our financial position for 2010-11 will, in total, reflect an increase in total net assets of approximately $30,000. Our donors made a huge difference in our results by meeting

a $150,000 challenge and donating at a level that is the second highest in Skylight his-tory! Ticket sales continued to be our primary challenge and we fell short of our earned revenue goals in 2010-11. As a result, our internal net operating result for the year reflects a $160,000 deficit. However, because of our ongoing debt reduction program and disci-plined approach to budgeting, this deficit does not include over $40,000 of UPAF funding or the approximately $90,000 in distributions from our endowment investments. By in-cluding these revenues, the overall organizational deficit is only $30,000. Not a bad result in a year in which the wider economic challenges continue to be felt in our community.

I am delighted to welcome Bill Theisen back full time as Skylight’s Artistic Director through the 2012-13 season. I am so pleased to be working with a wonderful partner like Bill for the remainder of his tenure. At the same time, I am pleased to report that we have a new committee in place for the exciting process of selecting Skylight’s next Artistic Director. It is such a wonderful opportunity to have the time to work through this process to select the best person to carry on the wonderful, artistic work that Bill and his predecessors have created throughout Skylight’s history.

My first full season as Managing Director has been both challenging and deeply satisfying. I would like to thank all our faithful patrons, generous donors, committed board members and advocates and talented staff for their support. It is a pleasure to be at the helm of such an amazing organization – an organization that has been so important to me personally and professionally for the past sixteen years. I am in constant awe of the talent and dedi-cation of everyone on our stage, in our shops and in our administrative offices. Our upcom-ing season is full of wonderful productions, educational outreach, special events, and most importantly – the “you” factor. Because Skylight is nothing without you.

Skylight Opera Theatre is in an exciting phase of growth and transi-tion as we move from the critically acclaimed, thought provoking sea-son of 2010-11 to the sensational produc-tions we will be seeing in 2011-12.

Amy Jensen has completed her first full season as Managing Director, and her dynamic and friendly leadership has made an impact that has been immediate in the overall culture at Skylight. We are thrilled that Bill Theisen is back with us full time for two more seasons, ensuring that we continue to grow as an organization while celebrating the uniquely vibrant productions that are Skylight’s mainstay. In addition, Jim Farrell joined us as our Development Director and, with financial help from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, we added Cindy Haas as our Finance Director. Both bring experience and energy that will help us reach for the stars in our upcoming season. We are all busy ensuring the Skylight remains a powerful force in the world of music theatre and a fiscally sound organization for Bill’s successor as Artistic Director following our 2012-13 season.

We are both grateful to our Board of Directors for their leadership and contributions of time and talent last year. It truly is a remarkable group of people whose passion for the arts is evident in each and every in-teraction that we have with them. We also thank the wonderful Sky-light staff for their dedication, know-how, and enthusiasm. Anyone that steps into the building can feel the energy.

Ultimately, it is our patrons and donors that make it all possible. Thank you for your generosity and support, we simply could not do it without you. We look forward to seeing you all at the theatre. And remember, together we can embrace Skylight’s exciting future.

In true Skylight fashion, the 2010-11 season brought Milwaukee the full spectrum of music theatre, from Gilbert & Sullivan to Gershwin, from Mozart to Jacques Brel; we took an incredible musical journey culmi-nating in the Wisconsin premiere of ADDING MACHINE – A MUSICAL composed by Milwaukee native Josh Schmidt. And the 2011-12 season welcomes five mainstage shows never before performed in our beau-

tiful Cabot theatre and two exciting Studio Theatre productions. The Broadway classic THE MUSIC MAN will make our holidays more joyous than ever and will include the largest cast Skylight has ever assembled! In addition, Skylight is one of the very few companies that can proudly say we are presenting two World Premiere pro-ductions in one season, THE RIVALS (comic opera at its best) and DADDY LONG LEGS (from one of the creators of LES MISERABLES). Add to that the incomparable Leslie Fitzwater as EDITH PIAF, Sond-heim’s masterpiece SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE and Studio Theatre productions of BEYOND THE INGENUE and our own Mike “Ding” Lorenz in THINGS THAT GO DING and you have one of the most exciting seasons Milwaukee has seen in recent history. Each one of these stories, driven by music of great power, ingenuity and beauty, will receive the attention to detail and full focus of our col-lective creative hearts that you have come to expect from Skylight. I am so happy to be back fulltime and take great joy in bringing you this amazing season.

Skylight’s commitment to arts education is ex-pressed through its comprehensive program, En-lighten. Enlighten served 10,146 students from 58 schools during the 2010-2011 school year. Thanks to the support of donors, the program was offered free of charge to Milwaukee Public Schools, including seven Partner Schools that re-ceive extensive residencies and support from two

Resident Teaching Artists. Enlighten was funded by nine foundations, nine in-dividuals and eleven corporations, including significant support from the Helen Bader Foundation, Herzfeld Foundation, Northwestern Mutual Foundation and the Daniel M. Soref Charitable Trust.

The Enlighten program continues to grow and our relationship with our partner schools gets stronger every year. This is exceptionally important in light of state wide budget cuts in public education. The component programs of Enlighten – residencies, workshops, touring shows and student performances – combine music, dance, theatre, visual arts and creative writing. They are academically, artistically and socially rewarding for children and teachers and we are proud of the impact the programs have on the students as well as the entire school community. In addition, Enlighten includes adult education with pre-show talks before select performances as well as in depth audience guides available on our website and in our lobby before each performance.

The Skylighters of Wisconsin is a group of enthusiastic Sky-light patrons and friends who volunteer their time to support the theatre’s fundraising and outreach activities. In 2010-2011 they raised more than $40,000. The Skylighters assistance is invaluable in coordinating and running Skylight Night, the single largest annual fundraiser benefitting the Skylight.

Skylight reached out to its neighbors in the Historic Third Ward with Cabaret in the Ward in August, 2010. Every Tuesday evening cabaret took to a specially-constructed stage in Catalano Square Park just south of the BTC. Hundreds of people gathered for each show, some having picnics, many bringing children. Estimated attendance at Cabaret in the Ward was 1,200 in 2010-2011.

In August of 2011 we collaborated with our Third Ward artist partners by holding our annual open house in conjunction with Gallery Night. Attendees toured the Broadway Theatre Center, enjoyed treats in our Cabaret Bar, and were treated to special performances by Skylight, Bel Canto Chorus, Renaissance The-atre Works and Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. We followed that the next evening with the first ever Skylight Rock Concert fea-turing Tommy Hahn and Revolush as well as some of the best vocalists in the city.

We are pleased to announce that the winner of the 2010-2011 Lee Doherty Ross Debut Artist Award is Lindsay Falduto. Ms. Faldu-to holds both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music from the Jacob’s School of Music in Indiana University, and made her Sky-light debut as Dora in Dmitri Tosca’s wonderfully re-imagined version of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte. Ms. Falduto is no stranger to acclaim having won both the Ken “Killer” Williams Award from Central City Opera and the District Level in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Autitions. We were thrilled to introduce her to Milwaukee audiences in our 2010-2011 season.

How do you know when you’re on a winning team? The most obvious answer is, “we win!” Whether it is reaching fundraising goals, or pro-ducing vital musical productions that feed the souls of our audiences, or engaging over 10,000 Milwaukee area students with our unique En-lighten education programs—we are definitely all winners.

What do I mean by “we?” Don’t think for a second that you’re not included in that. Anyone interested enough to be sitting there reading our Annual Report is part of this team. So, thank you so much, for making our fundraising year a success. Overall we made or exceeded our goals in Individual Giving, Foundation Giving, Corporate Giving and Government support. As always, a special thanks to UPAF without whose tireless fundraising ef-forts Skylight, like so many other arts organizations, could not survive. Also, a special “thank you” to our Clarion Society mem-bers who have committed $5,000 a year for three years. It is truly humbling to work with such generous donors.

The development department is currently strategizing ways to boost contributed income. This includes, but is not limited to, exciting new events that will engage existing donors, while help-ing introduce Skylight to new audiences. We recently held our first ever Rock ‘N Roll fundraiser featuring Milwaukee’s top vo-calists and we are also in the early stages of planning a special party to capitalize on the growing popular interest in musical theatre with a whole new generation of fans.

In addition we are making a concerted effort to reach out and be available to all of our donors. You may have noticed us at the theatre, before the show, handing out audience guides and an-swering questions. You may have even received a telephone call from us to thank you for a donation or to invite you to a special event. If you haven’t, it’s just a matter of time before you do. There’s a lot going on inside this building, and we want you to be as fully immersed, engaged and energized as we are.
