The changes will drive exciting developments in pedagogy that will help redefine the nature of education. Many of you will have seen the email from the P&C and/or the article in the North Shore Times relating to the concept plan for the redevelopment of the Chatswood Education Precinct. The concept plan is used to present a business case for funding. For the project to move from a concept plan to the next stage funding has to be granted. This has not happened yet so the project is still only a concept.

The diagrams from the North Shore Times have been reproduced so the entire community has access to them. In the concept plans the High School will be separated into a junior and senior campus. There has been much debate across the community about this split and I would like to provide some answers to the questions I have received from students, parents and staff. The school has returned to Term 3 with talks for Years 7 & 8 on Digital Nutrition, Years 10 & 11 boys taking part in the Men of Honour program and a presentation from the well-respected author Madonna King talking to Year 7-9 girls and their parents. I would again like to thank Lynn Donohue and Evelyn Manson for their persistence and organisation of these events. These events have added depth and texture to our wellbeing program for the students, parents and staff. Madonna’s presentation touched on the areas of leadership, mindfulness and how we listen to our children. At one point she challenged the adult members of the audience to think about whether we really listen and interact with our children. Madonna also used the analogy of parents being the edge of a swimming pool and linking this to students swimming out into deeper water to test their skills, find enjoyment and challenge themselves. As they are moving through their high school years they will come back to the edge for support and security and it is at this point that they need to know we will be there for them. Glen Gerreyn who presented the Men of Honour program was equally insightful. He touched on a number of areas of adolescent male development which were quite profound for the Years 10 and 11 students in the audience. His explanation of the four levels of addictive behaviour was very clear for the students to understand and was adaptable across the spectrum of behaviours from gaming to drug use. Year 12 start their Trial HSC examination next week with only the remainder of this term left of their school career. When speaking with them earlier this week I reminded them that they have their support team of parents, friends and teachers to work with them. Many students experience heightened levels of anxiety to an unhealthy level during examination periods thus reducing their ability to do as well as they could. For other students a heightened level of anxiety might be beneficial. You will know what is appropriate for your sons and daughters and I thank you for being there to support them during this time. I also spoke about the use of the Trial HSC as a diagnosis of areas they need to address after the examination period. The level of compliance with our uniform is varied during the winter period and I am aware that some sizes in our jackets have been out of stock. If your son or daughter is unable to wear the school’s uniform for any reason please write a note explaining the reasons and ask them to take it to the Deputy Principal for their year. The Deputy Principal will give them an out of uniform pass. The jackets are now in stock and the students have been informed that hoodies are not part of the school’s uniform. There is an expectation that every student will wear the correct uniform every day.

Our performing arts program continues to deliver outstanding opportunities to our students. The success of Oliver last term is still being felt across the school with fresh bonds being built across the community. I would like to acknowledge the work of the following staff members; Trish Berry for her amazing leadership of the production, Sue Ward (Head of CAPA), Joe Harrison, Erin Wagner, Stephanie Sexton, Michael Spence, Mitch Gulpers, Charlotte Perry, Genevieve Tyrell, Deb Wilson, Ineke Sicklinger, Sarah Blatch, Nic Boogert, Mark Logermann, Vicki Barham, Julia Maxwell and finally Richard McKay for the amazing artwork on the sets. I would also like to acknowledge the hours put in by a dedicated group of parents; Doug Cardew, Jane Stergio, Julie Moore, Caryl Barnes, Stuart Barnes and Clare Jennings. My thanks also to all the staff and parents who continue to volunteer in the kitchen, front of house and picking up bits and pieces throughout the rehearsals and performances. Finally and most importantly, I would like to congratulate the students for their work on stage and behind the scenes. The nature of ensemble work makes this production an outstanding achievement for everyone involved. I am looking forward to another dynamic term full of learning experiences for the students that will have a profound impact on their development.

News from your CHS P&C – August 2018 Here’s the latest news from your P&C, including activities and events planned for Term 3. P&C Trivia Night –Saturday September 15th Following the success of last year’s trivia family fun night, planning is underway for another evening to be held later this term. So keep Saturday night - September 15th free for this fun event. The big question is – Can the Year 12 students beat the teachers? Further details will be on the P&C website or join the P&C parent network so you can receive the latest news. Anyone wanting to help on the night or in planning, please contact our secretary via email: [email protected] Well-being Program The P&C sponsored a daughter & parent evening earlier this week with respected author & journalist Madonna King speaking on her research with teenage girls. Madonna discussed the social, psychological and physical challenges facing our girls; the power of a friendship group; the obsession with selfies and social media; and how to support your daughter’s build self-confidence. Following the success of the Tomorrow Man workshops held with year 9 boys on June 18 & 19, CHS parents are invited to attend a follow-up parent workshop being held at Cammeraygal high School on August 9 from 6 -8pm (bookings required, please see flyer with information on how to book). The parent session will discuss how to develop deeper bonds with your son and will examine health and wellbeing issues facing young men today. See separate flyer for details. Tomorrow Man aims to challenge male stereotypes and provide tools for a healthy life. Healthy Digital Habits will be the focus of a session for some of our younger students later in the term. And following considerable parent interest at our recent special P&C forum, we are also planning for a parent session (hopefully on September 10 - to be confirmed). Note: P&C well-being sessions are developed and run in close collaboration with the School’s own Well-being program for CHS students.

Chatswood Education Precinct – further progress. Did you see the article in last week’s North Shore Times? An important milestone has been reached in plans to redevelop facilities at Chatswood High & Chatswood Public Schools. The Concept Plans show the development of a Chatswood Education Precinct with new buildings and

major refurbishment works to consolidate a K-6 campus and 7-9 campus on the existing High School site (Centennial Avenue Site), plus adaptive reuse of the Public School site (Pacific Highway Site) as a Senior Campus for years 10-12. If you haven’t seen the Concept plans go to: www.majorprojects.planning.nsw.gov.au/index.pl?action=view_job&job_id=9483. Look under the “Attachments & Resources” section for the “Concept Plan” attachment.

Presidents from both CHS & CPS P&Cs met with our local member and State Premier Gladys Berejiklian on July 27 to discuss the urgent need to start public engagement with the parents and local community on this project. We were told the Department of Education will distribute information pamphlets in mid-August and seek feedback from the school community and local residents to help inform the final plans. We have asked for an evening information session to be scheduled soon afterwards to provide an opportunity for parents & local community to learn more about the CEP plans, staging of development and ask questions directly to the CDEP project team before the end of this term. Representatives from the P&C and Principals from both schools remain actively involved in the Project Reference Group as these concept plans will soon move to a more detailed planning stage. Other dates for you diary Term 3 P&C General meetings will be held in the Learning Centre

(7.30 to approx. 8.30pm) o Tuesday - August 14 o Thursday - September 13

Programming Club This term our coders are testing their skills with the NCSS Challenge - an annual competition which both tutors and tests. Chatswood High School is proud to have students competing across all difficulty levels, from Beginner to Advanced. Beginners will learn more about Python code and write programs to solve simple problems, while Advanced competitors will create an AI (Artificial Intelligence) for the card game 'Big 2'. The AI bots, created by

students from around the country, will then battle it out for card-playing supremacy! The competition is open to all ages and experience levels, and we encourage everyone to give it a go.

2018 Year 8 Chinese Garden Excursion On the 26th of June, the students learning Chinese in year 8 went on a cultural excursion to learn about Chinese culture in our multicultural society. Exploring Chinatown We started the day by going to Chinatown where we saw Chinese symbols such as dragons and some Chinese architecture built there. We explored Chinatown and walked down the main street called Sussex Street. Chinese Garden of Friendship Then we went to Chinese Garden of Friendship which in my opinion is one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen with its diverse wildlife such as the water dragon, koi carp and several species of birds. The garden shows us ancient Chinese architecture and it also includes multiple waterfalls, beautiful lakes and lagoons with lotus plants floating on top. One of the best things about the garden is its breath-taking greenery. From tall willow trees to simple plants, it's a truly magnificent place. Chinese Cuisine – Yum Cha After a long day of exploring, we went to have Yum Cha at the East Ocean Restaurant which was a perfect example of Chinese cuisine with dishes such as fried rice, pork buns and many more. I speak for the students when I say thank you to all the Chinese teachers for organising the excursion.

Writing for Film and Television Workshop In Week 10, Term 2 eighty year 9 English students participated in a workshop: Writing for Film and Television. This opportunity involved meeting and working with an industry professional and listening to a Q&A session. Students were given the chance to apply their literacy skills, namely narrative construction for multiple narrative arcs and precise vocabulary for persuasive writing, to reshaping a real 'factual television' episode. The workshop was a valuable experience and many students asks relevant and insightful questions. Some students, according to the industry professional, were so impressive that they are surely destined for a successful career writing for film and TV. Well done year 9 and thank you to all staff who were involved. A second opportunity to work with an industry professional through the English curriculum will present itself later this term. Watch this creative space!

Report on the Sister School Yangtze High School Affiliated with Nanjing Normal University On 23 of July, a dozen year 11 students from Yangtze High school in Nanjing, China visited our school. The Chatswood High School students were excited for the arrival of these students, as many still had connections with the students that visited last year.

Page 5: Message from the Principal - Chatswood High School · Tuesday 4 September Unity Masterclass Wednesday 5 September RAISE Mentoring . Term 3 Week 8 . Wednesday 12 September RAISE Mentoring

Students from year 10 grouped with the students from our sister school, inviting them to join our classes. They experienced several different classes, learning about the environment and culture of Australia, whilst chatting with students to learn about Australian school life. Students from Chatswood and Nanjing bonded over meals during recess and lunch, and were given a welcome speech by both Principals. During period 4, all students went to the Learning Space, where they participated in a Kahoot and listened to the experiences of students that have crossed the cultural border.

These international visits are extremely significant for the development of our appreciation and understandings for foreign cultures, which immensely impacts the harmonious and cultural diverse Australia society today. From interacting with Chinese students, our students established and strengthened their Chinese skills and learned to

acknowledge their differences. The students developed profound friendships despite language differences and difficulties, and all participants were engaged with various activities carried out during the session. Chatswood High School students were thrilled with the overall experience, they were delighted to participate in this activity

and we hope such visits can take place more frequently.

History Tea Ceremonies in Japan Tea ceremonies in Japan first began in the eighth century as a formal ceremony involving tea to mark special occasions. Historically this comes from Chinese influence in the early stages of Japanese History.

Tradition How is one conducted? Chanoyu, or Sado, is a ritual of preparing fine Japanese green tea, known as Macha, presented and served with delicious Japanese sweets to balance the taste of the tea. Presentation is key!

Students’ feedback: The math excursion was full of entertainment and excitement. I went with little to no knowledge on what to expect or what the whole show was about. It really taught me different perspectives of maths other than just solving problem sums. - Akkarawat Kaveewatcharanont The maths excursion was an excellent way to end the first week of the term, it was relaxing, satisfying but most importantly it was fun. What made the excursion so great was the play we got to watch, it talked about many interesting things that we won't necessarily learn in school I learnt think from different angles and despite the play being 2 hours long it seriously felt like I was in the theatre for only 30 minutes. - Arnold Dow The maths excursion at Roslyn Theatre to attend The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time- Maths inspirations, was extremely informative and entertaining. Through this experience, students were able to learn from experts from various fields and have an enjoyable experience. - Lydia Zhang A group of excited students from Yr10 headed to the Royal Parker theatre from Chatswood to indulge in an exciting show called the “Curious coincidence of the Maths in the Day Time”. The show explained and explored the maths in the book/stage production “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time”. The show was filled with interesting maths on how to escape mazes, the patterns of sounds and terrible puns supplied by the hosts. - Thomas Nouri-Azari
