MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

“What you are speaks so loudly, they can’t hear what you say”, Ralph Waldo Emerson: Something we as parents and teachers need to reflect upon as we go about our respective roles of nurturing children and young people.

CONGRATULATIONS TO….

HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

YEAR 3 CAMP

Year 3 have just returned from an exciting overnight experience in Sydney where they visited Hyde Park Barracks, Cockatoo Island, had a special boat trip up the Parramatta River and stayed overnight at Sydney Olympic Park. The boys and girls had an amazing time learning about the First Fleet and the early days of the British Colony in Australia as well as Aboriginal perspectives around colonization. 3B have been hard at work writing ‘sizzling starts’ as they reflected on their camp experience:

Ms Le Ray came in to wake us up. "It's morning!". I woke up and stood up quickly. Bump. My head….. yet again. - Felicity Littler

Wow!!! So that is the past of Australia. It's cool, that is awesome!!!! - Alyvia Slade

Come back here pillow, you're not getting away with this….I need to brush my teeth! Give me back my tooth brush. - Kathryn Cook

"Ms Le Ray, Ms Le Ray" "Yes" "I want a glow stick" "Ok, hold on." Later….. "Ms Le Ray, Ms Le Ray" "Yes" "I really would like a glow stick" "In a minute" Later….. "Ms Le Ray, Ms Le Ray" "Yes, yes, I'm coming" Finally. - Suzannah Brydon

I extend our thanks to Mr Cantor, Ms LeRay, Mr Botfield, Mrs Molloy, Mr Summers, Mrs Wark and Miss Lutze for their efforts in making this camp run so smoothly. Well done to all of our Year 3 students who were engaged and active learners throughout the camp experience and magnificent representatives of our school.

ICAS SCIENCE COMPETITION

It is pleasing to report that I received the official results for the 2015 ICAS Science Competition sat earlier in Term 2. Whilst the ICAS Competitions created by the University of NSW are not compulsory forms of external assessment, external testing of this nature sits comfortably alongside the NAPLAN examinations that Year 3 and 5 students participate in each May. Our students received particularly pleasing results again this year in the ICAS Science Competition with a number of students receiving High Distinctions, Distinctions, Credits and Merits. These outstanding results are even more impressive when taken in the context that an ever-increasing number of schools across Australia are using ICAS as an activity for selected students only, most likely those involved in Gifted and Talented Programs. High Distinction (top 1% of students) – Noah Simon Distinction (next 10% of students) – Theodore Brown Credit (next 25% of students) – Alexander Bell, Dylan Inwood, Kani Lukuta, Charlotte Dobson, Isabelle Adams, Nathan Wilson, Macy Willis, Finlay Pigot-Irving, Liam Lightfoot. Merit (next 10% of students) – Eloise Cliff BUILDING LEARNING POWER

Over the course of Term 3, we will be focusing on learning capacities associated with ‘Mind’ where students are able to look within and be reflective learners who examine the strategic aspects of learning. STARS OF THE WEEK: Building Learning Power Zoe Sawers - 4S - for excellent noticing of patterns and details. Demonstrating our ‘Lakes Grammar Habit’ of Respect

Douglas Ruzicka, Stephanie Anderson and Sienna Lyle (2M), Cassidy Garvey (KH) Emma Florimo, Kasey Young and Ryan Bentley (OC), Nooransh Dhaka and Elizabeth Thomas (6L). Tyson Ford-Malley is missing his sports uniform following swimming lessons recently. If you come across items of clothing belonging to Tyson, it would be greatly appreciated if they could be handed in to Junior School Reception or to Miss Butcher (1B) please. Year 3 Camp lost property

Who would have believed that so much lost property would be left over from a camp! If your child has left

something behind, then there is a good chance it is in the JS school office awaiting collection. Most of the items are of a personal

nature, unlabeled and after next Friday - will be disposed of! Come and see Tracey or Debbie if you wish to reclaim any lost items.

AFTERNOON MESSAGES are given to students immediately after lunch. Please be aware that the school reception area

is a very busy time at the end of school and it is unreasonable to expect that a message can be taken out to students who

have already departed their classrooms for the day to stand in bus lines or parent pickup. If you need to get a message

to your child regarding alternative travel arrangements please contact the school reception prior to 1.30pm.

Students in parent pick-up lines who are not collected on time will be held in the office until your arrival.

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT

Matt’s Mutterings This week the Trial HSC has begun and our Year 12s will have a fairly clear picture of what they need to work at in order to reach personal goals for the HSC. I can still remember how hard the Trial HSC was and how it really shook us up. I remember having to dig deep and put in an even bigger effort after the trials and into the HSC. Going through the trial with my friends and classmates helped us be stronger on the other side. I think there are a few reasons why we came out stronger and I hope they might help.

The first thing that comes to mind is that I belonged to a group of friends at school who loved to talk about life. We tended, as a group, to naturally share with each other about our school work and encourage one another. If someone knew an answer or how to solve a problem then sharing would happen. A lot of dialogue went on a lot of the time.

The second thing that stood out was how humorous so many of our group were. We often laughed together about struggles, about teachers, about ourselves and each other. With all the tension of the HSC we kept sane by laughing. One particular friend always brought a new joke to school each day which helped us balance out all the serious stuff we still had to deal with.

The third thing that stands out for me is that I was blessed to be surrounded by focused and goal driven people. Our teachers harnessed our drive and most of my friends had set goals in the HSC. Some wanted a certain mark; some wanted to get into a certain course; some wanted to achieve well in some core subject areas and some simply wanted to get that piece of paper that says “You’ve done it!” Shared focus helped us all to do as well as possible.

So for our Year 12s and for those of us facing trials of another kind I pray that you will be surrounded by people who will share a common focus. I pray that you may have a sense of humour to balance out the seriousness of your situation and I pray that you may always be able to share your burdens with others. Jesus in fact said those great words, “Come to me all you who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Jesus himself offers to share your trials with you too…invite him in and let him share the load too. Bless ya!

CAPA NEWS August is always an exciting time for the Creative Arts Faculty. HSC Visual Arts and Music students are working hard on their final pieces, exploring their creativity and pushing themselves just that little bit further to achieve the very best result. We would like to thank the parents of these young people as their work is being prepared for examination. Your support and encouragement is so valuable at this time. The HSC can often be just as taxing on the family as it is on the candidate.

The annual Senior School Art Exhibition will take place again at Gosford Regional Art Gallery. The opening is on Friday, 28 August and will feature work from Art Camp, Digital Photography courses and general art classes. This is an excellent opportunity for students to celebrate their achievements and share their work with the wider community. We are looking for parents who may be able to offer help in looking after the gallery space for a day. Please contact Mrs Hobden on [email protected] if you can help out between 27 August through to 4 September.

Congratulations to all the wonderful Music students who proudly represented their school at the HRIS Cultural Festival. Miss Francis was responsible for leading dancers from all the schools in the festival, with the choreography being developed in consultation with one of our Year 11 students, Courtney Jeffery. Our school has a very long tradition of performing at this concert and we are grateful for the guidance of the Music Teachers, Miss Abdilla and Miss Mitchell.

This week the Lakes Grammar Music department were thrilled to welcome a guest music artist, a seasoned industry performer and teacher, Nate Butler to work with our Year 12 HSC Music 1 class, who are in their final weeks of preparation. The two hour performance workshop included many performances by our HSC students who received immediate feedback and tailored instruction on vocal and instrumental technique, posture and delivery and also methods of creating more emotion and expression throughout their performances. The masterclass was also attended by a number of Year 8 and Year 9 elective music students who received valuable insight into advanced performance techniques as well as ideas for overcoming nerves and stage fright. All in all it was a thoroughly inspirational morning for all involved and left our Year 12 students with a buzz of excitement and confidence in readiness for their trial performances next week. We are extremely grateful to Nate for generously giving us his time and an exceptional live performance of ‘Stars’ from the musical Les Miserables

and look forward to the next opportunity for our students to work with such an experienced professional.

Finally, we can confirm that the Cultural Convergence Tour of New York will take place in 2016. This opportunity will include our choir singing at Carnegie Hall and the young artists studying some of the most famous art works in the world. Please contact Miss Abdilla for further details.

HRIS CULTURAL FESTIVAL WRAPUP What is it about the Hunter Independent Schools Cultural Festival that is so satisfying for students, their families and staff? How is it that students and staff can spend a full day working hard for long hours with few breaks and then want to do it all again next year? Students from the senior campus of Lakes Grammar - An Anglican School boarded a bus on the morning of Wednesday, 29 July and set off for an adventure in the performing arts; one of the many opportunities made available to our students at the school.

The HRIS Region Cultural Festival is co-ordinated by staff from a variety of independent schools in the Hunter Region. Its aim is to provide opportunities for students from different performing arts backgrounds to work together on presenting combined performances of high quality in a variety of areas.

We saw over 300 students fill the stage at Hunter Valley Grammar School’s Cameron Centre this year with an amazing sound of young, enthusiastic voices that held the audience suspended in time. This year students from Lakes Grammar participated in the Years 9-12 Choir, The Years 5-8 Choir, The Wind Orchestra, The String Orchestra, Concert Band, Jazz Band and the Dance Ensemble! Students

in the Years 5-8 and Years 9-12 Choirs captivated audiences with their harmonies and the sheer quality of all of the songs presented. Our parents expressed their pride in how well our students presented on stage in their full school uniform.

A very large ensemble of 26 dancers held the eyes of every person as they weaved a voiceless expression of the music. We were very proud to have our own Miss Emma Francis (Science and Dance for Sport Teacher) and Year 11 student Courtney Jeffery choreograph and teach the combined schools dance item.

Our musicians impressed us all with their amazing performances; playing such difficult, yet stunning classic and contemporary pieces. Lara Timmis (Year 12) played the cello, proudly representing Lakes Grammar as part of the String Orchestra. Lachlan Green on trumpet and Luke Carver on Drums/Percussion represented our school as part of the Jazz Band. Bradley Hughes on Bass Guitar and Byron Brooker confidently represented Lakes Grammar as part of the Combined Wind Orchestra; Mikaela Writer on Saxophone and Benjamin McKechnie made their debut Cultural Festival performance as part of the Concert Band.

What is it, then, about the Hunter Region Independent Schools Cultural Festival that inspires our students and staff? Perhaps it was the new friendships made? The free sausage sizzle, compliments of the HRIS Cultural Festival Committee, certainly went down well. The opportunity to work as a team, spend a day socialising with like-minded friends and the chance to make incredible music may well be the answer.

SENIOR LIBRARY NEWS SS Library, a place of quiet study. As some of you will know, the library is currently a quiet zone for Year 12 students studying for the Trial HSC. The library will remain like this until the end of this term. We have laminated coloured study cards (from Excel HSC) for Geography, Senior Science and Food Tech students. There are also syllabus summaries – excellent for revising and studying, (from Excel HSC) available for Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Business Studies, Studies of Religion, Modern History, Design and Technology and PDHPE students. These can be printed off on request. We also have past HSC exam papers (as well as marking guides, sample answers and HSC markers’ notes) in all subjects, saved in PDF format for the past five years, 2014 – 2010, which we can print off on request.

Excel study books are available at the library desk for use in the library, during students’ study periods. These are not being loaned out due to high demand. (They can be purchased at local good book stores, averaging $40).

There are a number of Discovery related texts on display for English students to borrow. (These can also be borrowed from the local libraries.

This list is very useful http://www.sutherlandshire.nsw.gov.au/Community/Library/Services/HSC-Students/Discovery-Related-Texts . “A mind of moderate capacity which closely pursues one study must infallibly arrive at great proficiency in that study.” ― Mary Shelley, Frankenstein

The library also has a number of new fiction and non-fiction books currently being catalogued and covered. Keep an eye on the “New Book” shelves (on the yellow wall) and on the new display shelving in the fiction area. Come and read in the peace and quiet.

CAREERS NEWS

This is a busy month for Careers and, in particular, Year 12. The UAC guides should arrive any day now to be given out to all Year 12 students. UAC applications opened on Wednesday, 5 August and will close at the end of September. The cost up until the end of September is $32. If you do not get the application in on time you can apply after this date but the cost will be substantially higher. Students should check University websites for any special Early Admissions or Scholarships. Each University has their own schemes and scholarships and may only apply to some courses rather than all of them. Dates for these schemes will be closing during this month- so – go check University websites and see what you can apply for.

Year 10 had an outstanding Work Experience week. Two students gained a part-time role as a result of their week’s experience and commendable qualities. We had one student translating documents for the Australia-China Business Council while trade negotiations were happening between the respective governments and another student who wrote a speech for a local MP that was given in State Parliament recently. This is a great indication of the invaluable opportunities that work experience can provide.

Year 11 have the opportunity to undergo Morrisby Testing on 16 September. The testing has been developed over 50 years and allows students to find their strengths and skills. It is a comprehensive test that lasts for over three hours. It is not about academic marks but

a tool to guide students in their career plans. The cost is $84 per student and each student receives a comprehensive tailored booklet with career suggestions aligned to their aptitudes plus a follow-up interview with Mrs James.

Following two days of competition the following students have been selected in the HRIS team to compete at the AICES Championships on Monday 31 August at Homebush. Nicholas Bignall, Hannah Cliff, Sabrina Cody, Sam Drew, Ben Duncan, Liam Duncan, Olivia Glanville, Camryn Kendall, Hayden Kendall, Bethany Kranendonk, Madison Liddle, Claudia Martin, Benjamin Platt, Trinity Robards, Eric Weber. Information will be forwarded to these students when it is made available from HRIS. SCHOOL REPRESENTATION: It is a great honour to represent Lakes Grammar and HRIS. It is obvious a student has a talent in a

particular sport if they are chosen for representative duties and as such should treat it is a privilege. Recently we have had far too many students withdraw from events without notice and for simple reasons, such as “I did not want to go”. Associations such as HRIS, AICES and CIS have introduced fines for students who withdraw without a medical certificate. Last year HRIS passed a motion that students withdrawing from a team event without sufficient notice or medical certificate will be suspended from HRIS selection for 12 months. I ask parents to assist us with ensuring their children meet their obligations for team selection. It really does hinder the performance if a team member is absent. AICES/CIS/PSSA/ALL SCHOOLS: For those students who are selected in HRIS Teams that compete at AICES, NSW CIS, NSW

PSSA or All Schools there are associated levies and charges. Typically students attending AICES will be charged $10. Students attending NSW CIS $22.50 and those going to NSW PSSA or All Schools $30 - $40. These charges are for administration and venue entry fees. Lakes Grammar covers all charges for HRIS events but fees at the higher levels are charged to parents. FOOTBALL: Congratulations to our Under 15 Boys Football team that competed at HRIS last week. Some great results throughout

the day, finishing in 8th place out of 16 teams. Thanks to Mr Langejans, Rev’d Matt, Mr Shallvey and Jack Daly for their work with this team throughout the year. NETBALL: At the end of last term our Senior School Netball teams competed at the HRIS Gala Day. Our school teams are extremely

strong and we did expect solid results, maybe not as good as we achieved.

Year 7: HRIS CHAMPIONS – UNDEFEATED - Caitlyn Park, Samantha Livingstone, Emily Smith, Aimee Butcher, Charlotte Akhurst, Joy Robson, Hannah Eadie, Skye Collier, Hannah Robinson, Mackenzie Jolly Intermediate: HRIS CHAMPIONS – UNDEFEATED - Alannah Smedley, Sabrina Cody, Anna Voigt, Olivia Glanville, Aimee-Jane Strawbridge, Jacinta Clark, Summah Black, Chelsey Wysman, Madison Baldwin, Ellie Dark

These are fantastic results. Well done to all teams and thank you to Gillian Cliff, Elisa LeRay and Jah Taipo for coaching and Renee Eadie for organising all of our umpires.

RUGBY LEAGUE 7’S: The school has selected teams to compete at the CIS Rugby League 7’s competition. The Under 12, Under 14

Woolworths Earn & Learn 2015 This year we are participating in the Woolworths Earn &

Learn program. Through this program we will be able to

get new educational resources for our school – and all we

need you to do is shop for your groceries at Woolworths.

From Wednesday, 15 July to Tuesday, 8 September, we

are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You will

get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10

spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place

the Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker onto a Woolworths

Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s complete, the

Sticker Sheet can be dropped into the Collection Box

here at the school or at your local Woolworths.

At the end of the promotion, we’ll be able to get some

great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers

lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for

Maths, English, Science and some fantastic fun supplies

for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our library. If you’d like to
