MASCC Study Group News The MASCC Nutrition Study Group has changed its name to the Nutrition and Cachexia Study Group. All existing members of the Nutrition Study Group will automatically become members of the newly named group. This study group is chaired by Dr Florian Strasser (Switzerland) and has three new co-chairs: Dr Jann Arends (Germany), Dr Liz Isenring (Australia) and Dr Sami Antoun (France).

Dysphagia SurveyThe Dysphagia Section of the MASCC Oral Care Study Group has developed a survey with the objectives. We ask that all clinicians, regardless of specialty, who are involved in taking care of advanced head-and-neck cancer patients, take the opportunity to help in this important endeavour.

The global objective of this study is to gather information on the clinical standards of care on diagnosis, prevention and treatment of (chemo)radiation-induced dysphagia in head and neck cancer patients.

To learn about the specific objectives and take the 15 minute survey, please go to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MASCC-dysphagia

Meet a new MASCC member: Gustavo Almeida I am a Medical Oncologist in Brazil and I work in a private clinic within a group of other oncologists and surgeons. I realized early in my career that oncologic treatment can make patients suffer; therefore, even if it can prolong survival but it does not have curative intent, I believe that we need to discuss with patients and families and tailor treatment, avoiding such complications to preserve quality of life. I have joined the most important societies in my specialty (ASCO, ESMO) and with MASCC/ISOO it would not be different. I try to keep in touch with the most recent advances in oncology and I have also perceived that the world is now paying more attention to this important issue, quality of life and quality of care.

Meet a new MASCC member: Margaret M. Barnes MD

I am the chief of radiation oncology at Lake Region Healthcare Cancer Treatment and Research Center in Fergus Falls, MN. I am board certified in both Radiation Oncology and Hospice & Palliative Medicine. I have been interested in symptom relief and prevention since I started my training in Radiation Oncology almost 3

decades ago. I joined MASCC/ISOO because it is one of the only societies in Medicine dedicated to organized study and mitigation of cancer and cancer treatment pain and suffering. The journal of Supportive Care in Cancer is a

superb publication, filled with both basic science and practical clinical information.

What you can do? to mark World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day 2013 (4 February 2013) will focus on Target 5 of the World Cancer Declaration: Dispel damaging myths and misconceptions about cancer, under the

tagline “Cancer - Did you know?”. World Cancer Day is a chance to raise our

collective voices in the name of improving general knowledge around cancer and dismissing misconceptions about the

disease. From a global level, we will be focusing our messaging on the four myths. In addition to being in-line with our global

advocacy goals, we believe these overarching myths leave a lot of flexibility for members, partners and supporters to

adapt and expand on for their own needs.

World Cancer Day is a truly global event, but to enable us to reach as much of the world’s population as possible, we need your help. We appreciate that everyone

supporting the Day has different needs and priorities, so to help focus your activities,

we have identified three ‘levels’ of engagement which you may wish to

undertake as you design your local 2012 World Cancer Day programme.
