TROUBLE AT THE LAUSD BOARD -IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED

Dear Parent Partnership Supporters,

Last spring, we wrote to you about the newly comprised LAUSD Board ofEducation and our concerns that this board would not supportSuperintendent John Deasy and his work in bringing positive change to theLos Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).Late last week, a key member of Superintendent Deasy's team submitted hisresignation and Deasy canceled a public appearance in the wake of aperplexing and concerning board meeting on September 10 that lasted over8 hours. The news was covered by both the LA Times and LA Daily News.

We are very concerned about the undisciplined process and lack of urgencyexhibited at the September 10 board meeting and what it signals for the

future (see Background below for more information). We believe that ourchildren, and the children of Los Angeles, can't sit on the sidelines and waitas dysfunction and inertia set in. The student-centered changes of the lasttwo years - increased graduation rates, vibrant charter schools, parentempowerment, a meaningful teacher evaluation system, and more - are atrisk if we not do require effective and efficient governance by the LAUSDBoard.

Background - The Common Core Budget

At the September 10 board meeting, Superintendent Deasy was seekingapproval of a budget to train teachers in the state's newly launchedCommon Core Curriculum. The $113 million in funds is specificallyallocated by the state for these training purposes (and cannot be used foranything else). Superintendent Deasy's team worked for a year and a half

with approximately 200 LAUSD teachers trained in Common Core todevelop the plan. The plan itself calls for LAUSD teachers to do the training.

Although it was the second meeting in which the Common Core Budget wasdiscussed, the board spent more time asking unrelated questions anddiscussing how to again postpone the decision than they did giving thesuperintendent concrete feedback or the approval he was seeking.In the meantime, our teachers and students are waiting for training in acurriculum that has already been implemented. Just to put this all in

perspective, the $113 million Common Core Budget represents less than 2%of the entire $6 billion+ LAUSD budget.
