Center may be closed for short periods

HOLIDAYS/CLOSINGS

Monday, September 5, 2011 (Labor Day)

Thursday, November 24, 2011 (Thanksgiving)

Sunday, December 25, 2011 (Christmas)

The mission of the Merriam Parks and Recreation department is to provide

first class facilities and parks, and enhance the quality of life for all residents

and visitors through education, recreation, and cultural opportunities.

Celebrating a Milestone

The Irene B. French Community Center is a unique and historic

facility, comprised of three buildings originally constructed to

house the Merriam School. The oldest section of the building,

constructed of limestone materials, was dedicated on

November 25, 1911. That's right; it will be 100 years old this

November!

The two-story building was completed at a cost of $20,000 and

was the first "superior school" in Johnson County, housing both

a grade school and high school.

A 100th anniversary should not pass without a celebration, and

so we are inviting you to a party to be held on Wednesday,

November 16 from 7:00 - 8:30 PM at the community center,

5701 Merriam Drive.

Activities will include live music by guitarist Dan Bliss, a presen-

tation by Historic Merriam Society, a reception hosted by The

Merriam Parks, Recreation and Community Center Foundation,

and the unveiling of an original stained glass art panel depicting

the historic building. The artwork is created by Merriam artist

Carol Whitlock.

All activities are free and all ages are welcome. We hope you

will be able to join us!

Reg. #: Dates

Fee: $250.00Strengthen your visual sensitivity and creative visual language with the versatile medi-

um of oil paint. This workshop is designed to explore the fundamental reasons

behind a painting’s success, ideas you will immediately be able to put to use. When

you walk into a gallery and see a beautiful painting, have you ever asked yourself

what it is that grabs you in the painting? This is the heart of this painting workshop.

To achieve this understanding, the premise for my workshop is simple: a painting is

less about what takes place on the canvas, and more about what takes place

between the canvas and the viewer. Visit Jeff’s website at www.jefferysparks.com.
