MERIT BADGES We strongly recommend that Scouts have their Scout Book, as well as Merit Badge pamphlet and/or have downloaded the merit
badge worksheets (see www.meritbadge.org) for each Merit Badge course being taken at camp.
Scouts should read their Merit Badge books before camp
MB pamphlets may be purchased at the Norton Scout Service Center o The Trading post has a limited number of pamphlets at camp (parents should call ahead to ensure books are available)
Scouts should recall that the buddy system is in effect at camp.
Find a buddy (it doesn’t have to be from our Troop) to go between Merit Badge classes.
The Emergency Skills Area is located to the right side of the Admin Building (not shown on the map)
Merit Badge/Program Prerequisites
Archery
Do NOT bring bow or arrows to camp
Req. 1c: Know local/state laws
May need extra practice time / shooting
Camping
It is recommended that Scout read merit badge book before camp & bring book to camp
Req. 4b should be completed before camp (proof from SM or ASM required)
Req’s 8d & 9b must happen outside of class
Bring proof for Req. 9a (and/or 9b)
Note: Proof of 20 days & nights of camping (letter from SM or ASM) (Partial MB earned if days/nights <20)
Bring camping gear, backpack and frame for inspection by counselor
Chess
Bring personal chess set (or buy at TP)
Req’s 3 & 6 must be done outside of class
Will require many chess games outside of class
Communications
Must allocate hours for ‘outside of class’ req’s
Req’s 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 must be done outside of class
Req’s 3 (5-min speech) & 7 (letter to editor, webpage or newsletter) should be done before camp
C.O.P.E. Must bring long pants (for high COPE areas)
Disabilities
Awareness
Requires 15+ hrs outside of class time
Collaborates with Easter Seals, Camp Sno-Mo
Badge only meets from Mon-Thurs at HV
Emergency
Preparedness
Must have completed First Aid MB (cannot take simultaneously with First Aid MB)
Req. 2c should be done before camp
Req. 8C: Bring (ALL!) items for Personal Emergency Service Pack & Family Emergency Kit NOTE: A picture showing all items of these kits might be permissible, if necessary items are seen.
Environmental
Science
Req’s 3b2 & 3f1 should be done before camp
Requires hours of observation outside of class
Lots of hiking around Reservation
Requires several written reports
Fingerprinting
May require additional class time depending on volume of Scouts taking this badge
Fire Safety
Req. 6 should be done before camp
Involves a Thursday visit to Gilmanton Fire Dept.
First Aid
Must have completed First Aid req’s from the Tenderfoot, 2nd Class & 1st Class Ranks
Bring items for Req. 2d’s (or make kit ahead of time) for Patrol/Home 1st Aid Kit (bandages [roller, adhesive, elastic, triangular, etc.], tape, alcohol swabs, gauze, moleskin, gel pads, antibiotic
ointment, soap/sanitizer, scissors, tweezers, safety pins, non-latex gloves, goggles, CPR shield and pen/paper)
First Year

Small Boat Sailing

Swimming
Must pass BSA swimmer’s test

Bring long-sleeve buttoned shirt and long pants
Bring belt, socks & low shoes
Must bring long sleeve buttoned shirt, long pants, socks and low shoes for Req.4. These items
will be in lake water – you may not want them back. Suggest that you not use heavy jeans, & have items a bit large. Req 4. Demonstrate survival skills by jumping feet first into deep water wearing clothes (shoes, socks,
swim trunks, long pants, belt, and long-sleeved shirt). Remove shoes and socks, inflate the shirt, and
show that you can float using the shirt for support. Remove and inflate the pants for support. Swim 50
feet using the inflated pants for support, then show how to reinflate the pants while still afloat.
